Hey all, sorry this took so long to release. This episode required a lot more work than I expected, and it ended up being pretty tiring to finish. I was also sick and stuffed up while recording most of my narration for this, so if I sound any different, that's why lol. Hope you enjoyed the video!
Hey AmtrakGuy and all! I've Never been this early to one of your videos, honestly I'm just leaving this comment here for anyone coming back here in about a year or two, leave whatever has happened or leave something for yourself. Bye!
I associate the 90s and early 2000s with them. Basically this along with the HPP 8 on NEC symbolized Amtrak and the future. Yes there's Acela too.... but only rode it once on a free upgrade.
I’ve grown up with Amtrak Genesis Locomotives, from watching dvd and VHS features about them as a young child to filming them today. They sure aren’t anything special to see, but they’re definitely a special locomotive that will always have a special place in this generation of railfan’s hearts.
I agree, I’m really gonna miss the genesis locomotives but as I recently told myself when looking over Metras upcoming SD70MACHs, I shouldn’t be against change
The chargers honestly are much more pleasing to look at than a damn 70ace. Mainline freight railfanning in five years will be nearly all sd70 variations. I’ll miss standard cab dash 7 and 8’s.
Fantastic video!!!! I’m honored to once again be a part of your narrated video series again!!! I enjoyed seeing my video at 11:51 with Amtrak P42DC Heritage Unit 156 leading Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 777 which was certainly a sight to see!!! Amtrak’s GE Genesis locomotives have been a large part of the fleet for well over 30 years now and its always fascinating to see and hear them on both intercity and long-distance trains throughout the country, particularly for me in California when it comes to intercity routes like the Pacific Surfliner or Long-Distance routes like the Coast Starlight and Southwest Chief, they are quite the sight to behold and I will always remember them as one of the many icons of Amtrak, much like the F40PH, Dash-8 and F59!!! Of course now, we are living in a time of innovation and becoming more environmentally conscious/friendly while it might be sad to say goodbye to them with the new Siemens SC-44 Charger and ALC-42 Charger locomotives entering service which have been growing on me I will still always remember seeing and hearing them in soo many unique and exciting ways of pulling and pushing trains throughout the rail network!!! Amazing Job!!! :)
I’ll never forget these titans of American rail. Damn good locomotives, they were the Amtrak fleet leaders I grew up with. No matter what happens the GE GENESIS locomotives will always be he face of Amtrak for me
I’m going to miss the genesis locomotives so much when they’re gone. They’ve definitely left their mark on Amtrak’s history and they’re served us all well.
I grew up to a dad who worked out of Albany-Rensselaer and there were 4 or 5 of those always around in the '90s, always in use. I was too young to know or care about why they were there, and now I'm here wishing I appreciated them more.
@@_chan.burn.21_ Oh yeah, all the time. Circa 1993 at Alb-Ren they were in heavy use going down to NY Penn and back, just as much as the other two engines they had back then, the F40s and RTL Turbos -- that was the trio of locomotives I grew up seeing all the time.
Some of my fondest memories were because of the Genesis. From my first solo ride to enjoying railfanning with an online-friend-become-IRL, they’ve been the backbone of all great things I’ve experienced throughout my life. I’ll be heartbroken once my local line goes full Charger, but I’ll never forget how much those old beasts mean to me. Onward to change, and honor to the legends.
The Genesis is among my top three favorite locomotives ever (behind the GG1 and Big Boy). Their designs always felt so ahead of their time and, in a way, they still do. The America by Rail series introduced me to this wonderful class of engines.
I remember watching "There Goes A Train" back in the day, and Engineer Dave drove P40DC 801. P40DC 801 was withdrawn in 2005, stored in Bear, Delaware for years, and finally sold to LTEX.
These have a special place in my heart. They aren't my favorite Amtrak, but I remember seeing them everywhere, typically going south out of Portland. You served us well!
11:49 Not only is that Joseph's clip but that's me in the background. I am the one in the yellow green vest. This was from our most recent trip to Amsterdam NY on 12/30/22
I love the P42DC locomotives, they had beautiful sounding horns, and are very unique locomotives. I also miss them running the state supported routes like the Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, Cascades, etc
I found an old VHS of There Goes A Train from the mid 1990s that I watched religiously as a kid. They were hyping Genesis as the next generation locomotive. Now close to 30 years later, it really was and continues to be a great engine for Amtrak
As someone who is not only B&SR 7 and CN 6060/6218 but Amtrak #100 I’m glad to see your back and I’m gonna miss these locomotives. However can’t wait for those new sets on the downeastern.
The genesis locomotive is what got me into loving Amtrak. My first ever model was an N scale kato model. I’m gonna miss these engines headlining the rails
I love the paint scheme on the CT Rail P40s. Genesis locomotives make up the majority of what I see running on the Hartford Line, and I’ll miss them when they are phased out.
Very nice video Jared. I was hoping I would’ve been able to have shown my photos or vid clips in this episode but maybe for your Siemens Charger episode soon. In reference to the locomotives, I kinda now think it would have been great if Amtrak’s state sponsored services in California would have planned to purchase to get Genesis units of their own. I think a Tier 4 version of them would have also been great especially for long distance service even since GE built the ET44 for freight. As far as Siemens being the most for Amtrak’s future, I just wish we had some variety for new coaches and locomotives for their trains even for state sponsored services. Heck I think Alstom would have been a great option for new doubledecker coaches on the Illinois and California services since Nippon Sharyo’s deal ended up failing.
Alstom should build The Coradia Multilevel cars for Amtrak to replace the California and Surfliner cars since both Metra and VRE have purchased the coradia cars to replace their gallery cars.
The first train I ever rode was the Silver Meteor pulled by a P40DC in Phase 4 trailed by 2 P42DC in Phase V. While the train arrived to my destination an hour late it was a smooth ride and the horn sounded awesome plus hearing them rev up with the chuffing sounds was just awesome.
I grew up with Genesis so I'm extremely attached to them. They are more mighty looking and have nice horns and I like the louder rumbling sound their motors make more than the Siemens locomotives. I really hope they stay around till 2080s even if they are just 3rd string backups at the time.
It might be time to make an update for your Genesis talk, Jared. Because 184 which used to be in Phase IV and got repainted back in Phase V, has now been repainted to an NPCU as P42C and renumbered 9700 with new Phase VII paint. I think 28 of the locomotives will be converted to P42C's, numbered 9700 to 9727.
I was on a California Zephyr train that was pulled by #138 and #82 in April. I absolutely love the phase vii paint scheme on the P42 locomotive and thought I think it also looks good on the chargers it almost looks better on the p42s.
YAY first video of 2023 I gotta say I'm really going to miss these locomotives when they're but we got to the transition from the f40s maybe we'll get used to the ALC-42s
I play this video game called NASCAR 21 Ignition and one of their features is a paint booth to make custom paint schemes; and awhile ago I actually made a paint scheme that was based off of the Phase V P42DC paint scheme cuz of how iconic it is.

Ok, I looked up some stuff with the Chargers, what's going on is that Amtrak bought precision-engineered German motive power and is trying to run them hard and put them away wet like they could with the less sophisticated but more rugged and higher-tolerance GE and EMD locomotives. There's been reports that Chargers are being OK'd to run with "Maintenance Required Within 24 Hours" warnings, only to break down mid-trip. I know for a fact that if I beat on my Volkswagen Jetta like Amtrak is beating on their Chargers, my car would be shitting itself every 10 miles or so. One of Amtrak's most reliable locomotives. If not, the most reliable locomotive Amtrak has ever and ever will run. Rest in peace.

For real! Any GE has that lower chug thumping earth sound. But the p42dc is amazing. I will miss em.

I did not realize that these things had a cab in the rear for reversing. That's pretty neat.
