Being replaced by Puma in German service, the vehicle is continuing to see service in the used-tank market.
The sim used is Steel Beasts Pro PE.

Lol do a Renault FT switchology video, only 2 minutes in length!
Fire, heat baguette, raise white flag
If I remember right most of the time MILAN was mounted on the units here next to us.
Was quite fast, not as loud and pretty fuel efficient as we drivers talked about ... inside it was great for the driver ... but back in the compartement it was far more crowded.
the guys in the back not often complained in trials except under abc conditions ... but if they complained there was a simple question to get ridd off these complaints:
Who wanna get out to walk ?
NBC conditions make all IFVs hideous by all accounts
Forced airflow made your canisters last longer but I’ve never been in an APC/IFV with tons of space. We did an exercise with Kuwaitis with BMP 2. Doors are fuel tanks so good luck getting out facing downhill and best you’re only a metre tall 😂. At 183cm and not the tallest it was torture in the back.
The Schussbereichsbegrenzer was very important at AA-firing-ranges.
Putlos anyone ...loved that :-)
I can imagine, we're still finding 2cm Flak from WW2 on the beaches here.
I have funny Childhood Memories with a Marder. My uncle was in the Heer (Germany Army) and drove a Marder. However, he has sunk the Marder in a maneuver in the river. - On a weekend there was an open day of the army and I climbed on the Marder and told the guy proudly that my uncle sunk it. Other people ask back what I just said and I pointed on my uncle and repeated proudly that he just sunk it days before. My Grandmother was laughing her ass off - my uncle not. He was quite pissed :-D
Last time I was this early the Marder had a 76 glued to the hull
@Mial isus u mean hull spoke czech.
@Mial isus Not even close, it spoke clear german.
@@agall664 The first marder WWII-era tank destroyers were made on a Lorraine artillery tractor chassis, and at one point a Soviet 76mm gun was used for lack of enough 75s
What might be interesting is a run through successive vehicles used by the same army to show how systems intended to do the same basic functions changed over time - e.g. Chieftain, Challenger and Challenger II. Or a similar group of cold-war era Soviet vehicles. Or how about specialised anti-air systems such as Gepard or the ZSUs if they’re modelled?
Or just do Chieftain :-) Especially if it’s possible to simulate both the early versions with the ranging HMG and the later versions with laser rangefinding.
Very good Video. The simulation is amazing. Have been a Marder-Company-Commander back in the days and was trained as driver, gunner, troupie and TC. I´ve got one correction at 18:18. You mentioned the range-controller, that the gunner has his own, which is linked to the TC´s. That´s not correct. There is only one. Often times the TC is operating the range-controller. The gunner is estamating the range, reporting it to the TC, the TC is setting the range, the gunner is shooting at the target. TC is looking for next target at the same time.
Will you do video of Leopard 1 and 2 too ?
I've always liked the Marder series.
Thank you!
Thanks for making a quality video of my old office! And thanks for the credits ;-)

There is a mistake at 16:45 The handel is not for mechanical traverse. It is to lock the ammunition feed at the gun so it can't move if you lose hydraulic pressur or from strong impact when driving wich could leave you with a jam oder just no feed.
You should do Switchology on BMPs!
Get to a tank museum already!
German Marder IFV inpired the TAM argentine medium tank. Also build locally here in its IFV format, called VCTP
@Herbert Erdferkel allá that is true sir. Couldnt make ir more complete than that. Hat off to you
The TAM tank really should be re-evaluated & adopted by other nations...with some upgraded armor/missile defense systems & FC tech it could still be a viable vehicle for areas with poor infrastructure because of it's low weight & conflicts that would not likely involve MBTs(the aforementioned armor upgrades would only add a bit of weight, it's not trying to keep out large caliber kinetic energy rounds, just HEAT). It's range and mobility and internal layout could make it the Merkava of low intensity warfare.

there isn't a hatch for every soldier in an IFV anyways.. I don't know what's yikes about that. it's not a swiss cheese with lots of holes, it's a tank.
if a group of these vehicles were driving around, would they have a specific formation or policy to mutually cover the huge blind spot to the left that each one has?
Yes, there are quite a few different formations for Panzergrenadier tactics. Also the guys in the back have the left side covered as well as the mirrors for the gunner. Lastly, the TC can just stand up and look :)

Lollllllll
I don't get all these "Remote Control Weapons Systems" since they're electrically controlled how are they not all routinely stabilised? Is it really that hard to stick some gyroscopes and accelerometers on there and program the electric motors to respond in proportion? Or are gun stabilisation systems way more complicated than just writing a bit of code "if then" code?
" just writing a bit of code "if then" code?" That thing started development in 64 and was delivered to the army in 71. There wasn't much of anything in there you could write code for.
How do you load the Milan ATGM on the Marder in Steel Beasts Pro?
I was turret gunner in Ferrets and Saracens,, how about doing them?
Cool mate 😎👍
Saracens? Wie heißt n das auf deutsch? Kann damit nämlich nichts anfangen 😅
Does it simulate any of the artsy stuff?
I was in the German Army 35 years ago as a part of the 7 guys in the back of the tank. The only thing I remember is that the commander can overcontrol the actions of the gunner. If the gunner - which space is rather narrow - puts his leg out of his place and the commander turns the turret, the gunners leg is cut off because the ammunition box of the 20 mm gun is in the way.
Damn
Yes that is true. I was a gunner on the Marder 1A3 in the third company of the 401 Panzergrenadier Battalion. That was also one of the reasons why the gunners had major problems with their knee joints, especially after long missions. We couldn't stretch our legs and, due to the lack of space, our knees constantly hit the armor when driving off-road. But I still loved it. The Marder was extremely reliable and a good workhorse.
how about a BMP-1? nice cold war car and milestone
I already liked the Marder alot, but I wasn't aware that the MK could fire 1000rpm. Now I like it even more!
is it a waste of ammo? yes, but its still cool.
No it's not a waste of ammo.
The doctrine is for the Marder to protect the tanks from infantry and helicopters. You need high rpm against fast flying targets.
I was a gunner on the Marder 1A3 in the Panzergrenadier Battalion 401. Yes, the BMK had a high rate of fire, but this was used very rarely. Most of the time we fired single shots, or similar to our MG3, in bursts of up to 3 rounds. Reloading the ammunition containers took time and would have been very inconvenient in battle, so we used it sparingly and tried not to waste ammunition.
Do the Cv90 the best IFV

You sound butthurt. Did the evil nazis hurt you? How many pigs of yours did they kill? :)
What is it with German machine guns, and their ridiculously high rates of fire.?
Steven Homan Rommel himself said the side firing the most lead tends to win the firefight.
It is easy, it's the same logic that explains the use of 3000 to 6000 rpm gatling guns on helicopters and aircraft.
The basic idea is to increase the amount of bullets shot per second and therefor increase hit probability. You basically exchange accuracy through build quality by accuracy through rate of fire.
In this video from the german army, they state at 3:44 that the maximum firerate of the MG3a1 is around 2500 rpm (yes, i couldn't believe it either) and of the 20mm cannon around 1200 rpm:
ua-cam.com/video/P064Lqv1Lyw/v-deo.html
MG3 is a development of the W W II MG 42 so that is why it has that high rate of fire.
Development? It's a one to one copy with a _slightly_ altered breech slide.
Some of the older ones in the Bundeswehr are still from old Wehrmacht stock. Only the eagle is ground out.
No, the reason is the increased hit probability due to immense fire rate. Quite like the reason why they use miniguns on helicopters and aircraft.
This video states at about 3:44 that the firerate is about 2500 rpm (lol, right):

Was there really never a stabilizer on later variants.
Just googled the replacement for it, the IFV or Schützenpanzer Puma, is in development hell since 1996. They probably started thinking about a replacement a little longer, so they never bothered.
Keep in mind that while germany is involved in multiple nato missions, only one of them saw actual fighting with ground troops.
@@kahunab7400 The original replacement started development in 1987, and would have had a fully stabilized 35 mm gun, PARS-3 MR anti tank missiles (laser guided, basically equivalent to Hellfire), better protection, and a bigger engine. It was cancelled after a working prototype had been tested in 1991, due to the German government feeling that it was better to spend the money on feeding the East Germans than on building armored vehicles to fight an army that no longer existed.
The Puma itself didn't start development until 2002 (there was a theoretical program in between, but no vehicles were actually produced IIRC), and they've been actually building them since 2009, it's just that due to the rigorous testing of everything it didn't actually formally enter service until 2015. But it *is* in service. It's just not fully up to spec, since the government is dragging their heels about funding the anti tank missile launchers, IIRC.
As for the original question - the turret was basically too cramped for any stabilization system available at the time, and there was no room on the vehicle for a bigger turret.
They tested stabilization later...but is was not deemed necessary as the Sovjets where just folding in at the time. Also it was expected that a replacement would arrive "soonish"(TM)
Was there just a collective amnesia after WW2 when both Brits (Challenger) and Germans (Marder) forgot that they already made an armoured vehicle by that name? Or did it count as a soft reboot?
So it's basically a Panzer II that also carries infantry. That would have been useful.
A Panzer II with night vision?
The wet dream of every Wehraboo...
@@3gunslingers
What does this have to do with wehraboos?
@@mandernachluca3774
Because Wehrmacht = best army in history, first to use assault rifles and night vision!!!!
@@3gunslingers
First to use nightvision one mass production scale on any vehicle and rifles (their radar technology lacked behind the british, so they had an IR scope in addition to the rudimentary radar system in their aircraft). The russians were the first to experimant with night vision on tanks like the BT5 and t26. The russians and brits also were the first to experiment with remote controlled tanks before ww2.
However, the germans were the first to actually actively use remotecontrolled tanks and missiles (or for that matter remote controlled tanks with anty tank missiles).
So again, where is the wehraboo analogy?

Yes. Preferably if some former operator chimes in, though
Did I miss something or we didn't see drivers seat?
SB Pro has extremely basic, it any, modeling for the drivers position. If i remember right the Marder is one of those with the bare minimum so there is nothing to see in the driver position.
Not realy worth showing the driverseat in this game...Its not a driving simulation ;-)
Can you explain the “mils trivia” ... I’m from a military back ground and I think I know what you’re getting at. You’re talking volume?
The military says that there are 6,400 mils in a circle. That is what any soldier in NATO is taught. A mathematician will tell you there are actually 2,000xPi mils in a circle, about 6,283
The_Chieftain so basically 6400 is just a nice round number so soldiers don’t need to think too hard? 1m at 1km is 6283 mils?
No, 1m at 1km is 1 mil.
The_Chieftain yeah I know that 😂. I’m sticking with 6400 mils.
The_Chieftain if 1 mil is EXACTLY 1m at 1km. And a 6400 mil traverse returns you to your original bearing then the system is correct. Yeah?
If that’s the case then this is an argument of the definition of the trem “mil”.
15 years In artillery. So you can get technical lol
The choice of the 20mm Hispano Suza style Autocannon armament is an odd one.
Why? Reliable, high rate of fire, accurate...and a very reliable double belt feeder. It also was able to destroy the possible enemy vehicles (BTR , BMP1/2) of ranges up to 800m.....I'd say the Rh 202 is good choice
Plus the gun was also used in towed versions in the Bundeswehr
I would imagine the cannon at full auto is more likely to jam/malfunction as well?
Nope, that happend very very rarely. And if, it was more often faulty ammo and not a gun problem.
Her a video of it, at 3:44 they state that the MG3 has a mximum 2500 rpm fire rate and the 20mm auto cannon around 1200 rpm :
ua-cam.com/video/P064Lqv1Lyw/v-deo.html
@@mandernachluca3774 , No, to have adifferent MG version from the dismounts, was an idea that never realy worked out. The Marder did get the very same MG3 then the one used on a bipod. (except the shoulder support was removed)...Rate of for is ~1200 a minute for the maschine gun, not 2500
@@RoninTF2011
Well, no, i suggest you watching the video, than you will see that the fire rate is much higher.
The MG 45 (not 42, i tlak about a later version ) for example had an official cycle rate of 1800 rpm.
The MG 3 A1 on this Marder is more than able to have a fire rate of 2500 rpm, simply because the only factors that would limit the fire rate are the barrel (wich is a heavy barrel for the MG3 A1) and the spring inside the gun.
@@mandernachluca3774 Been a Marder crewman for more then 12 years. The MG3A1 dos not have a heavier barrel...

No Milan??!!
Yeah, not modelled as mounted weapon in this game (yet...I hope)
Do not insult my dear Marder 😉
can you do ace
Afer 16:45 when it gets in the really specialist stuff for the gunenr the mistakes really add up. With the ammunition feed lock and the emergency controlls. Like the middle paddle ist a safety and you didn't even show the emergency buttons on the magnitic valves.
And the commander and gunner share 1 range controll unit.
The thermal sight max is 8x magnification.
The time to change ammuniton typ is fare fare shorter. It is more like you push the button, kachunk. light comes on that the gun is ready. But of course you first have to unlock the ammunition feed lock wich you didn't do.
Also with APDS you have to aim 2 right and 2 high and the MG will allways shot 2 to 6 left because of the exterieur mount to the left
Given that he got his info from a badly made video with bad english...its not his fault.
-There is not realy a point in speaking of the valve block...they are not modelled in this game anyway(not visually, not funtionally)
-The "Aufsatz" has "windows" and scale cylinders for each, and the transmission works on both optics.
-The TIS magnification may be a mixup between the gunner and the TC FoV(or the Peri-Z11)
-The time to move the DGZ in this game is too long, agreed...but still noticable IRL
- when the MG (and the MG mountings) is not a total whore and zeroing has been done well , the aimpoint should only be 6 left at nearly point blank * ( at 400 , more then 2 would be a reasing to kick some maintencance dude), How much aimpoint correction needed for APDA, depends much on with what types of HE you've done the "Einschießen"/überprüfen Treffpunkt and again the overall state of the turret. It should be within the center crosshair(= smaller then 2) at 800 *
Trick-question: What is the maximum effective range and tracer burn time of AT-12 ammo? ;-)
*(at least after using the KTM18...)
oh.
1000 rpm for an autocannon is insane. Forget about wasting ammo, what about barrel temperature?
training and fire disciplin. Also the ammo capacity is not enough to burn trough the barrel---
For some reason I was expecting the WW2 Marder :(
Same here. Saw “Marder” and clicked, no thought went into it
Marder 1A3 is the only cool Marder there is...
With all the hydraulic systems , its surprising the gun has no stabiliser.
With technology of the time, the turret would have to be much bigger to install the equipement needed for a stabilized weapon...also: price. It was considered not beeing worth it
What do you want to shoot at during movement anyway? That's not an MBT.
The Marder is supposed to give the soldiers a ride into and out of battle and to give support to those soldiers while being static. It's also a perimeter defence vehicle. You park it in or around your compound for security.
The added complexity of a stabilizer is just not worth the hassle and money.
@@3gunslingers Well, a stabilized gun would have been very useful for the Marder. Esp. in fast moving contacts, it would make it a lot easier to engage "sudden" targets. Having to stop for an engagement also slows down the overall pace of an operation...the often made our tankies in the Leopard go crazy. They often complaint about "waiting for the Marders"
Also, the Marder is NOT an APC, it is an IFV. It is an integral part of the Grenadier-group that moves directly with the dismounts. You do not park that somewhere...idealy its alway close to kill the things that dismounts can't.
@Mial isus Shut up.
Steven Homan
The Marder IFV was brought into service in the early seventies. The replacement project Marder II was cancelled shortly before being ready for procurement(end of Cold War). There were projects to outfit the Marder with a new turret and a fully stabilized 30mm cannon( KUKA E4 turret www.checkpoint-online.ch/CheckPoint/Images/N-KukaM12.jpg ). But budget cuts and new priorities for example mine protected vehicles like the Dingo were of greater importance. So only a minor upgrade to the Marder l A5 was implemented. This upgrade increased especially the mine protection of the Marder. Only a small number of Marder IFVs were upgraded. After the successful use of the Marder in Afghanistan ( at the beginning only 5 vehicles for the QRF) more Marders were rushed to Afghanistan, and further small upgrades were implemented Marder l A5A1 ( Barracuda multi-spectral camouflage system, IED-jammer, air conditioning) during the campaign in Afghanistan the number of Marder IFVs serving in the two german task-forces was increased 2010/11 to over 30 vehicles. The replacement of the Marder started again in 2002/3. In between the nineties and the start of Puma-Programm another replacement project for the Marder was canceled( the NGP-project, Neue gepanzerte Plattform). The Puma, despite being purchased already for many years, is still lacking full operational capability! To cut a long story short, the replacement for the Marder took far to long.
Dial M for Marder
Isn't there a Marder with ATGMs?
I think all the Marders carried Milan, either as a dismount or turret launcher, after 1977 or thereabouts.
If you’re thinking of the ATGW equipped tank destroyer Raketenjagdpanzer 2, that was based on the same chassis but was really a different vehicle intended for a different job.
Yeah, the sad thing the MILAN mount is not modelled in this game currently. In real live the MILAN launcher could be mounted at the commanders hatch. And nowadays the Marder would equiped with Spike-LR
@@tlw4237 The Jagdpanzer where on the chassis of the 90m canon Jagdpanzer. Not the Marder hull.
@@tlw4237 Bit more complex. Marder went through a large number of prototypes starting out far closer to the HS30 in looks. At that point a whole family of vehicles was planned on the chassis (see Argentinia, they use some). Some of those turned out impossible ( Canon armed AA tank Matador) some to costly (Mortar carrier) and in some cases the Bundeswehr did not want to wait (KaJaPa/RaJaPa). So those two split of from the Marder programm before the final set if prototypes for Marder where created and became a separat programm starting at the status of that time.
The germans I was near in Afganistan had this or the next version when I was there back in 2012/2013. As a Cav Scout I was kind of jealous, I was an MATV.

Aw... Why Chieftain do you have to be so professional. Do a video cut and then drive a tank into place so when you look into one of the periscopes from the commander position you can act surprised and blame poor visibility ;)
Mil scale? Wtf was ever wrong with degrees?
more numbers before you have to start dealing with fractions probably. plus 6400 has a lot more nice factors than 360 does. 360 is quite a good number for factors but you do end up with things like 22.5 pretty quickly, so a bigger number is nice.
@Nasim Aghdam something like that yeah
One could argue, however, that 6000 is even better number, hehe.
Accuracy by far for artillery. When I got explained to about mils a General took his Division out and placed one soldier per metre at 1 km from one spot. 6400 men later we got mils units.
When arty used to fire big lumps of iron at infantry lines they found degrees to be too inaccurate. Same for navigation on foot. Mils ftw.
You should rather ask what's wrong with radiants, they are basically the metric version of degrees.
Unstabilized gun? Really? In a German vehicle? What is it, 1940's?
The Marder ist a old APC that should be replaced for years...
Old is a relative term. BMP-2 is an old IFV due to be replaced for decades, yet it still had stabilized gun from the very beginning.
@@F1ghteR41 it was probably not considered necessary for the tactics of the time. And later ... try to get money for tanks in an anti-military land ... (sry Google translate)
@@F1ghteR41 The Idea was having a rather small turret and having it on Budget...so space and money where short for having a stabilized weapon. On the plus side: Protection was much better in the Marder. The 1A3's front was tested against 30mmx165 AP and APDS from the BMP2 canon. Even point blanc fire did not punch through
Given that 2A42/72 is kinda impotent, it's not hard to imagine at all.
I will be better next time I am in a Marder...oh, wait! Lol (20mm and 7.62? Like a Panzer 2?)
Am I missing the joke here?
Nope, Panzer II was 20mm plus 7,92mm.
Of course the Marder also has Milan missiles and the guys inside also have further weapons like the Panzerfaust 3.
Not to mention that the Marder's 20 mm autocannon has better performance than the Panzer 2's, further enhanced thanks to the more potent shells that aren't 30 years old.
They don't even use the same 7,62mm ammunition. The NATO 7,62mm is only 51mm long while the Wehrmacht used 59mm long cartridges.
@@steinkopf2085 no, just joking about 'actually' driving a Marder, not in a game.
not as fun as if done on a real vehicle
Would be hard to get into one for him. Doing it in a simulation is the doable/cost effective solution ;-)
Nice video, but you shouldn't base whole documentary on game... It's silly at best. It would be great if you could add at least photos from the IFV inside, even better if you could have any "walk around footage". What would you say if you see "walk around" based on WoT only? I know you are working for the developers, but you must confess that no one would treat such document seriously.
Would be hard to get ino this vehicle IRL...esp. not using the turret and the weapon. So using a simulation(game) like steelbeasts is a cost effective option. They have rather detailed models of the vehiclesand the handling in game is pretty close to real life.
