      The is no Mi-12, only the V-12 dual, side-by-side rotor helicopter. Mil choppers only receive the "Mi-" distinction when they enter serial production. The V-12 never entered production but always remained a prototype.

    Interesting that the largest helicopters built outside Russia are produced by a company founded by and named after a Russian - Igor Sikorsky. And the Mil Mi 26 is not "one of the" largest, it is THE largest helicopter in the world, by all dimensions, by weight and by lift capacity. Plus, your #3 "Changhe Z-18" from China is a 1:1 copy of your #10 "Super Frelon" from France.

    When a young inventor showed the Tsar what he had invented, he was told,
    -no interest.and we have no money for such fancy gadgets-.
    Or so the story goes.
    Who was the young Inventor?
    Igor Sikorsky...

    • @einundsiebenziger5488
      @einundsiebenziger5488 5 місяців тому

      Sikorsky designed airplanes in Russia. He only started designing helicopters long after he had emigrated to the USA. The very people Sikorsky fled from were also the ones who killed the Tsar in 1917, so the Tsar never got to see any helicopters during his lifetime.

      @@einundsiebenziger5488 well, we heard the story as i told it... and i copied one line from a WIKI article.
      After returning home, Sikorsky began to experiment with model flying machines, and by age 12, he had made a small rubber band-powered helicopter.[18]

    The last helicopter were intended for hiding where the nuclear missiles were deployed. The mobile launch ramps were sticking out as a sore thumb. Often using railways to transpot the heavy equipment were a huge give away. The primary reason for the invention - trying to hide the deployment very visible on satelite and spy plane footage. Fast deployment could at best be done more quickly than analysing the footage. Now footage and analysis can be done in real time or close to - why it's become obsolete for the intended role. Secondly even during the Cold War both sides would inform each other of desployments and exercises. An aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis - the closest we've been at the Cold War going "hot". You can't win a nuclear war. It's a deterrent to claim authority scaring your enemies from getting bad ideas. Putin is very much born out of the Cold War - He recently declared in public Russia would be doing exercises and launching missiles. Not telling the US could be a very bad mistake - He doesn't want to trigger a nuclear war.

      ... huge* Russian helicopter. And it might be able to "sling" an Abrams, but it will never lift it. The Mi-26's maximum lift capacity is 22 metric tons, its maximum take-off weight is 56 metric tons. The lightest version of the M1 Abrams is 55 tons, the lastest version with "TUSK" anti-mine protection is 63 metric tons - no chance for even the Mi-26!
