Great review , I have the Unna and its a great tent . U picked up on some good points, I've watched many reviews from unna owners and even they often do not understand the Unnas benefits . As u mentioned u can raise the long sides for ventilation , I often raise the short width sides with my boots or stuff lying around the campsite , sticks and stones . Its free standing and the quality of materials is great , the water rating beats generally all non hillebergs especially the floor about 10000 roughly , , u could camp in a bog and stay dry :). Its the vestibule people do not understand, it has one anyway but its really easy to drop a corner of the inner and create loads of space for cooking or if its bucketing down I will drop the door inner corner and get in and change out of wet clothes before getting inside the inner. I've spent 14hrs in it once in wet windy winter weather and glad I had all that space:). Its a bit heavy for summer really but still great for summer bikepacking and kayaking trips:) 👍
Thank you for this detailed comment of your user experience. Yes until you actually start playing around with the tent its hard to appreciate its versatility and interior space. The waterproof rating and groundsheet thickness are two further plus points. ATB Tom
I’ve had a few Hillerberg tents but my all time favourite is the Unna. I use it mainly when kayaking in the Swedish archipelago so there’s a lot of pitching on flat cliffs. Besides the 10 mm poles I would recommend the mesh inner tent during the warm season. It makes it feel even bigger inside, the ventilation is great and you can sleep with the whole front open without getting eaten alive by mosquitos. I also bring a small cheap tarp to put under the floor. It protects it when the cliffs are sharp. And if the weather predicts many days of rain I’d like to bring along a Tarp 10. Gives you more space and can be used as extra wind protection too. On the whole; it’s extremely easy to use, very versatile and fits in really small spaces.. :)

Top-quality video mate. I have 11mm Easton poles from tentpoletechnologies. Ive found the Unna to be so incredibly stout and versatile. Mesh inner option is amazing for summer. You can pitch it solo in 10 seconds and wait out periods of rain, flysheet. Has an incredible amount of space for one, and two on light and fast peaks. And even in summer backpacking with two and no inner but a tyvek groundsheet, it's basically ultralight. The door is so large it can even be a shade or a cook tent with the outer only for groups. Instant, 4 seasons of roomy protection from the elements is what the Unna is. And can be pitched literally anywhere. Cheers.

Weighed my backpack when I got home (I didn't have the to psych myself out with weights before the hike) - 16kg without the 2ltr water, evening meals, fuel spent, whiskey, etc. Torture, but so worth it! Love my Unna, i find the large gap between the outer/inner helps with comfort in high winds, the outer moves but doesnt seem to transfer it to the inner, also stops a lot of condensation getting onto the inner as well. I pitch and carry the inner/outer separate, helps keeps the inner dry when on multidays.funny u mentioned the orientation to sleep, ive slept either end , never thought bout that, so much room inside its easy to move around in it. great vid, nice to see a good review of this rarely seen tent..ATB WJ

Happy to find this a Unna review. Very objective and thorough as usual Tom. I have this tent and have found it to be superb but….., I did opt for the inner mesh tent for warm weather use. Cross ventilation is poor in dead air warm environments. Thanks Tom

Excellent review Tom, now you've really thrown a cat amongst the pigeons for me, for 90% of the use this tent I think would really excel. Good tip about the freestanding design in regards to drying out. Loving the crisp audio by the way, that Rode mic is superb. Kind regards from Lisburn.

Great detailed review Tom, thanks for the time and effort you put into these, it is appreciated! Desperately waiting for your review of Unna vs Soulo vs Akto because I’m just about to ( try! ) and buy a Hilleberg tent and can’t decide between the Soulo, or Unna or Allak 2….. I would love the Allak , but it’s a tad on the heavy side at 3.3kgs packed, so the Soulo and Unna are almost a kilo lighter , but deciding between the Soulo and Unna is a lot closer. The Soulo doesn’t have much interior space and is a bit fiddly to pitch but looks really stable in high winds, but the Unna is simple and quick to pitch and has a decent size interior , also if you swapped the poles in the Unna out to 10mm ones and used some extra guy lines I think it would handle severe wind situations a lot better, so I think at the moment I’m favouring the Unna. Really wish I could see both tents side by side , I’m sure that would help me decide easier 🤷🏻♂️ ATB mate, keep up the great work 👍

Great review thank you! The Unna is my third Hilleberg and my favourite - it’s a pleasure to be in. I haven’t had it out in wind yet and, while it is aerodynamic over the ends, I do wonder how a strong wind shifting round to the front or behind would buffer it. When pitching the continuous sleeves mean no more guy lines wrapping themselves around clips, and I find taking down is even quicker as both poles can be removed simultaneously. One improvement I’ve made to the original is to add two extra pockets - the Unna yellow inner only comes with one and it is on the left at the front so not where I want it. (The mesh inner comes with two, diagonally set.) The flexibility of the usage is amazing and if I’m camping with my folding bike I unclip front left corner to expand vestibule as you demonstrated. The views from inside the Unna are terrific too. I’ve been using it this summer with a mesh inner and love that too, and not just for the ventilation - it really enhances the experience of living inside the tent. 😁👍👍
Hi Peter, thank you for your detailed comments especially as an Unna owner. I totally agree about the wind shifting direction to the front or back and this would be my only reservation. Even with 10mm poles the tent has little support from the front or back....The guy lines and clips do get tangled on the Soulo for example and all of this takes time to manage. The pole sleeves are so fast but possible less suitable for extreme conditions. As I mentioned the main body of the tent can be set up in about 2 mins with full security in about 5 so super fast to set up. Yes to the pockets as Hilleberg are very lean in this respect so organised storage could be better. Having the door the full length of the tent is great and lends itself to great views of the outside if conditions are good. Many thanks once again Peter for your continued comments on my videos. Absolutely spot on test, You said 230 cm ? Length, Would be near vertical ? My mat is 7 cm so sounds appealing, I might invest in a quality winter tent, but I won’t need the soulo as don’t intend to camp in really tough conditions, mind you the Cheviots are a windy range. Hi Mountain Hopper how are you? Yeah the Unna is pretty long at 230 cm but does slope in quite a bit once you add height on top of a mattress. It's a great versatile tent for reasonable conditions.. The free standing issue is not a major bonus for me so I think I would prefer a Nallo 2 to be honest and might try to track one down for a full review... ATB Tom
Hillebergs own pictures and pitching video do a disservice to this tent. It makes it look like it has zero vestibule and the pictures do not show that low venting option.
Hi Tom I'm just doing some research on the unna and your my hilleberg guru lol.i was out in the snow last night with my kuiu and at 3.3kg with footprint I was thinking I didn't need this much strength because the winds were fairly light but I couldn't use my niak because of the snow so was thinking the unna might be a good choice even with the 10mm poles I'd still be saving a kilo have you heard any problems with the unna as it looks like I might be getting another tent lol 😁
No probs with the Unna especially with 10mm poles.. The vestibule is small and its a bit vulnerable from the sides but I suppose most tents have a better or worse orientation into the wind... Most Unna owners seem to be very happy with them and high winds can ultimately catch out most tents... Its never an easy decision so I hope this review helps... Best wishes Tom

Hi Chris, thank you for your comments. I haven't had the opportunity to try the Niak but it in theory as I am sure that you have looked is a little wider but not as long.. One of my other comments talks about the Niak and actually prefers it over the Unna but with 10mm poles. I personally don't fancy the lighter weight fabrics as they are just so prone to accidental damage but that's only my opinion.... ATB Tom

Hi Thorsten, actually I am just as tall as you are: 198 cm, and I have slept many, many nights in my Unna. It is true that we 198ers will touch the inner fabric a bit. But it doesn't prevent me from sleeping like a baby. However, when there is heavy condensation on the inner, you should protect the feet of you sleeping bag to get damp from it. I wouldn't change the Unna for any other.
I'd be nervous taking it out in winter due to the weak sides. Also it looks like it would be vulnerable when taking it down and setting it up in high winds. If you know it ill be nice weather, would make a nice spacous tent, but in the UK, Scotland in particular, the weather can change quickly without warning.
Hi you have definitely identified the weaknesses of the Unna. While its a great tent these are the reasons that I personally would not buy one... Weak from the side and even quite a large surface area for the wind to catch end on... Still so many owners never use to this capacity and just camp in good weather... best wishes and thank you for this comment... Tom

I have always admired this simple tent design, my most comfortable outings have been in similar designs, but with matching doors on both sides, was wondering if you had any thoughts on the matter? At any point did you wish the tent could be opened on both sides?
Hi Fred, the matching door idea would make the tent extremely versatile, especially for two users and extra gear storage. I suppose Hilleberg decide primarily who or how many the tent is for and design it around that... Adding extra features adds weight and costs and they have to decide where to draw the line.... I think with the double door option it would take the tent to 2.6kg and that would make it too heavy for some users... Not saying I am right here but just my thoughts.... I think you are exactly right. With Hilleberg and their thoroughness, adding another door would be a big deal, both cost and weight would be increased, but having the luxurious extra door for a tent that is already a bit heavy and a bit expensive and a bit luxurious might not be a big ask for folks using this tent. Folks want Hilleberg tents for all sorts of reasons, but two reasons to never buy a Hilleberg are weight and price.
Tom, very informative again. Would like to understand your thoughts on sleeping bag etc touching the inner tent. I'm 193cm (approx 6,3-6,4) and other than Enan and Helags have not found a Hilleberg I can lie in without sleeping bag and/or head touching the inner tent. With autumn/winter approaching and thus spending more time in the tent I'm looking for more interior space that Enan (which I own and love) provides, but find Helags too heavy for solo use...
Not even the Helags 2 at 2.4kg? I'm 209 cm so I really feel your pain, I'm thinking of opting for the Kaitum 2 (3.1kg) for solo use, heavy it might be but I'd rather have comfort than be cramped inside with my head and feet touching the inner. I tried an Akto and my feet and head were soaking. I'd love to try out the Unna it could possibly tick most boxes. Just a shame I couldn't take my Exped mat and sleeping bag to try the tents before buying one as they're not cheap if they don't suit.
I hope to film the Unna against the Akto, and Soulo over the next couple of days. I will show more of the length considerations for the Unna to try and help longer users.... Tom

BTW I would reckon a good outdoor retailer will let you try the tent either with you own equipment or something similar they have in store. I live near Utrecht in the Netherlands and here I have two retailers that have pooled some money together and operate a big place where you can really try all the tents from the most notable names

He is going to review the Hilleberg Helags 3 and post up a video on his channel soon, between him and Tom they produce the most comprehensive and in depth reviews of Hilleberg tents that exist. That is a fair point about trying out a tent before you buy one. Hi Tom, I'm thinking of getting an Unna. The quoted length is 230 cm from the base. What sort of length is there once you are on a mat? I'm not that tall (178cm / 5' 10"), but concerned my winter bag could touch the ends. As a much taller person, do you ever find the footbox of your bag (or your head) ever touches the inner walls?
Hi Simsday, thank you for watching.. This Unna was borrowed to review so I am not regularly using it to give you a detailed answer.. But as far as I am aware I had no issues with the length.. I actually noticed length issues on the Staika more as the dome slopes in very quickly... All tents have pros and cons and a longer tent will then weigh more.. 230 cm is definitely enough for the majority of users and as I mentioned before I noticed no issues here in the Unna. ATB Tom

Hi Tom, thanks for this excellent review of (in my opinion) a very underrated tent. I'm the wrong side of 65 now and have some minor mobility issues. Consequently I've been looking for a solo tent with plenty of internal space and ample headroom but which is still practical to carry. Initially I dismissed the Unna because I was under the impression it had no vestibule. After watching your review I've purchased the Unna and found it ideal for my needs. My expeditions nowadays are rather more modest than in years past and it handles with ease the worst conditions I'm likely to currently encounter. Very versatile tent.

It is a great little tent and after using it it could be on my next tent list... As I have got older.. space for moving inside the tent is more important and the Unna fits the bill here and is also high quality and strong enough. BUT I have a Samaya Assaut2 8K and thats really working for me tested over many camps....Its 1kg lighter with the same space and so far about 12 nights (all my camps in it) condensation free... best wishes and happy Christmas.. Thanks Tom, I've found the One Tigress bathtub ground sheet fits under the Unna perfectly. I'm thinking of using it like that without the inner tent during the warmer months. Or alternatively finding a lightweight mesh tent that will fit okay. I know Hilleberg can supply a dedicated inner but it doesn't save much weight and is of course very expensive. I've got the MLD Duomid with a mesh inner. I'll try that for size. I haven't actually checked but I think using the Unna as a single skin shelter or with a very lightweight mesh inner should fetch it down to around three and a half pounds. Really like that tent. Love the fact you can have the whole front open to admire the view if you are pitched in a scenic spot and the room it gives you for a relatively light weight. I hope Hilleberg don't increase the price after seeing this video . Thanks Tom for another engrossing video.

Great vid Tom! Hilleberg lend med one pre-production Unna when I hiked the Kungsleden back in the 1990s. Had my dog with me, we had a great time. Loved the tent, and actually suggested a few minor changes to Bosse. Those where the days!

Great review Tom 👍 I have a niak bought a set of 10mm poles (x3 for my allak 2 same size) it's pretty similar to the unna slightly bigger vestibule on the niak..inner door is just mesh also the fly doesn't go to the ground for sustained bad weather unna looks like it just pips it I think ?

Hilleberg should make a black label Unna option. ( Kerlon 18 fabric + 10mm Poles ) Plus improve the door with a full mossie net / zip down panel - for a nice view, even when lying down and keeping the Scottish midges at bay.
Yes I think in some aspects it would be simpler if they chose certain models and then just made yellow,red and black label versions.. Most of their tents need updating as the designs are very old and this is disappointing. The new tent options each year are also minimal... best wishes Tom
Hi Mechelle, The Unna... ,,,🤔💭 Another option for you . A super all-rounder but limited vestibule space for a longer trip.. A Hilleberg Nalo 2 is another option at the same weight here. More room inside, and decent Vestibule... The freestanding aspect of the Unna has many followers but personally I don't dig it at all. All tents need properly secured by pegs and a Nallo only needs 4 if there is no wind.. Select your camp ground carefully and you won't need to move it... Any other thoughts 💬 just ask and I will detail the pros and cons.. All the very best Tom
Great in-depth review of the Unna! I’ve always really liked the simple design and look of this tent, especially when the front of the outer is completely rolled back. Really surprised at how much room there was between the inner and the outer. For one person the tent looks like a palace!

Got one coming in the mail to check out, bit on the expensive side but something that keeps the wind out a bit better than my UL stuff and also is free standing got me curious. Weight is more than our 4 man tent hehe!
Hey I hope that you like the Unna. There is no doubt about the big difference in weight and there is a big division in opinion between lightweight and ultra light tents. At the moment I am still in the lightweight category. For example if you use a UL tent and bring any extra clothing or gear to keep warmer due to the lower protection then you are reducing the weight benefit in the first place. Durability too can be an issue as if I had a DCF floor in my tent I would prefer to protect it with a footprint and here we go again adding weight... I must admit though that I reviewed an Zpacks tent for 4 season usage and was very impressed. However I don't use walking poles and when you add in one to the structure then the weight advantage again starts to reduce. Some of the fabric bonding on the tent was starting to fail as well so I am still not sure they are for me... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 DCF is expensive for sure! I have a dcf groundsheet for my bivy camping tho, to protect the thin silnylon bivy hehe! True about the temperatures, my Tarptent Protrail gets A LOT of air flow. I am going to check out a few different tents these coming weeks, looking for something for those rainy days out solo camping and fishing.

Tom... which tent would you choose for Northern "windy" Sweden/Finland use for one person (with room): Soulo, Unna, Niak, Rogan. I have the Fjällräven Abisko Lite 3 and other Fjällräven tents, but wanted more of a freestanding tent. Weight is my issue. I have a Staika... but TOO heavy for one person (unless winter). Thoughts? Hi, if weight is your issue then freestanding kind of makes that impossible. For example an Unna is the same weight as a Nallo 2 but much less inner and and vestibule space... An Unna has the space but not really great in windy conditions.. The Soulo strong but heavy and little space. So you need to decide on what is important to you. Niak or Rogan, light and spacious but are definitely 3 season tents and would struggle in winds over 40 mph. .Really sorry but I cant answer your question as you are listing contrasting variables.. best wishes Tom

@@TheTrailDancer Yes the Unna has a lot of surface area for its poles to support so not a great wind tent.. The Rogan will be worse so maybe you just need to manage your space in the Soulo.... Tom

Thanks to your review, the Unna could become my tent of choice based on stability, compact size but massive inner volume plus inner height and the ease to pitch. Seeing the vestibule space was a real game changer for me.

Hi Rob, well it had to be done cleaning the lens.... Until I reviewed this Unna I would have been a bit reserved about it. But on pitching and using it on a number of occasions I was very impressed. For tall users its perfect too. ATB Tom
Hi Rob, I am 1meter and 98 centimeter tall and are quite comfortable in my Unna. However, I must admit that most times on both ends I am in touch with the inner, but it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe this helps.
Excellent review! After 25yrs of using different tents from all kind of manufacturers the Unna is the one that's staying with me. I've been using it for years now, can't fault it. Also packs away small, fits a 8L drybag.

Different strokes for different folks as they say, but one of the unmentioned strengths of the Unna is how easy it is to pitch in the environments that I encounter in the East coast of the USA. I cycle long distances and often stealth camp and this tent goes up in places that other tents which require staking and guying out rom more directions are difficult to put up with due to the narrow places it's been shoe-horned into. I really value that easy, straight forward pitch in tangled shrub and woods. We don't have wind to speak of here, unless it's a hurricane but we have tropical levels of heat and humidity - so ventilation is doubly important. I can only use my Soulo in winter because of the lack of decent ventilation, but then I'm often feeling pinched for space. I guess on needs at least four or five Hillebergs to live the good life. ;)

Once again, I find the thoughtful blend of details and the conclusions you have drawn from them makes your videos extremely useful. 1. Where the limit to wind resistance might be (and how to improve it) 2. There actually is a small vestibule even without detaching some of the inner 3. You mentioned that you can fit 2 large size Thermarest pads in there. Are you saying that 2 large NeoAir pads will fit if the heads are facing opposite directions? This would make the tent much more usable to me. Thank you.

Hey Tom I did enjoy the review and I can tell you put a lot of work into this. I never considered the Unna for myself to be honest. It seems to be somewhat between a Yellow label and a Red label tent, just like the normal Soulo is somewhat between a Red and a Black Label ( with the 10mm Poles this becomes a clear RL ). I think it could be great to use this if you travel with a Single Dog and need shelter for both, I probably would still pick the Nallo 2 over this, but if you are looking for a freestanding tent this could be an option. Yes lots of work to film this over a week or so to get different locations and conditions rather than just review it from one pitch...... A person and their big or small dog would manage great here in the Unna but maybe more difficult if your dog usually sleeps in the vestibule...... I have always preferred the Nallo 2 over the Unna in the past due to greater space and the lack of it not being freestanding doesn't really bother me. Now though I am not so sure having used the Unna...... ATB Tom

I wonder what would happen if you did buy 8 additional guy lines with 4 more pegs and attach them just like the others, but with a 90 degree angle compared to the ones that are already there and going to the side. (Two additional pegs and 4 guy lines in the back and two additional in the front with 4 guy lines) You would possibly have a minimal gain in weight, but overall a great stability improvement. ( At least in my head that is ;) )
Owned 2 over the decades. If and when the wind changes, say no more. It has its place like any tent or shelter. Boundaries!!! Better and cheaper choices out there.

Over one thousand nights in an Unna, all over the world using 10mm DAC poles. Never an issue. Two words, site selection. Tent is still going strong. I calculate about 35p a night to date. Curious about the better cheaper options.
Tom...to let you know I finally made the decision and bought a Staika with footprint, but right to the last minute I was changing my mind! I have only been out in it once but I am pleased with my buy. Thanks for all the great advice on your various reviews, it certainly helped in my decision making process. I think for an all round tent for my sort of usage it will be ideal. I hope your health is ok and wishing you well. Roger

Hi thank you for watching, that's a tricky one.. Its a balancing act for all fabric types regarding, costs, tear strength, weight and UV Resistance never mind the other the many other aspects of the tent design. DCF fabric for example has better UV resistance than nylon but not many tent designs to choose from... Polyester too has better UV resistance but much lower tear strength. Thicker Nylon ie 70D will also have better UV resistance than the 30d used here... ATB Tom
Great review, i bought my unna with 10mm hilleberg staika poles, its bombproof, george fisher were the only camping shop to sell me the unna with only 10mm poles, every other shop wanted me to buy the unna then buy 2 10mm poles, the unna with 10mm poles , the only solo tent you will ever need, ,cheers
Hey great to hear and I was super impressed with the flexibility, strength and space in the tent. That was really decent of George Fisher to sell it with the 10mm poles instead of the 9mm. There does seem to be a lot of users who go for this option. ATB Tom
That's a good choice if you're planning for windy mountain use. I had my Unna smashed in a storm in Sarek, northern Sweden a long time ago. The poles bent and cracked while I was sleeping with earplugs. First time in my life I had to shout "help" , as I was sitting in the collapsed tent preventing it from blowing away, and needed the attention of my mates in the other tent. The remaining Hilleberg tunnel tent was getting close to also giving up during the night so we retreated to lower protected grounds. After that trip, I patched up the rip in the pole channel some some dental floss & silicone and upgraded to the thicker poles. A tad heavier but worth it for sleeping with confidence. Overall, Unna is a great 4-season tent. I also bought the all-mesh inner for summer use. Nice with a small foot print and free-standing for kayaking trips when camping on rocks.
I’ll be honest, I favor the shares of experiences when the tent (or whatever equipment fails). I don’t particularly judge it has a mark against the gear. In the right conditions almost everything will eventually fail. So I appreciate the story 👍🏽

Great review , I have the Unna and its a great tent . U picked up on some good points, I've watched many reviews from unna owners and even they often do not understand the Unnas benefits . As u mentioned u can raise the long sides for ventilation , I often raise the short width sides with my boots or stuff lying around the campsite , sticks and stones . Its free standing and the quality of materials is great , the water rating beats generally all non hillebergs especially the floor about 10000 roughly , , u could camp in a bog and stay dry :). Its the vestibule people do not understand, it has one anyway but its really easy to drop a corner of the inner and create loads of space for cooking or if its bucketing down I will drop the door inner corner and get in and change out of wet clothes before getting inside the inner. I've spent 14hrs in it once in wet windy winter weather and glad I had all that space:). Its a bit heavy for summer really but still great for summer bikepacking and kayaking trips:) 👍
Thank you for this detailed comment of your user experience. Yes until you actually start playing around with the tent its hard to appreciate its versatility and interior space. The waterproof rating and groundsheet thickness are two further plus points. ATB Tom
If you raise the long sides during rain, does the bottom inner get wet?
@@Simsydavno not really especially if not facing wing , it has a bucket shape groundsheet and the gap between the inner and fly is quite large
I’ve had a few Hillerberg tents but my all time favourite is the Unna. I use it mainly when kayaking in the Swedish archipelago so there’s a lot of pitching on flat cliffs. Besides the 10 mm poles I would recommend the mesh inner tent during the warm season. It makes it feel even bigger inside, the ventilation is great and you can sleep with the whole front open without getting eaten alive by mosquitos. I also bring a small cheap tarp to put under the floor. It protects it when the cliffs are sharp. And if the weather predicts many days of rain I’d like to bring along a Tarp 10. Gives you more space and can be used as extra wind protection too.
On the whole; it’s extremely easy to use, very versatile and fits in really small spaces.. :)

Top-quality video mate. I have 11mm Easton poles from tentpoletechnologies. Ive found the Unna to be so incredibly stout and versatile. Mesh inner option is amazing for summer. You can pitch it solo in 10 seconds and wait out periods of rain, flysheet. Has an incredible amount of space for one, and two on light and fast peaks. And even in summer backpacking with two and no inner but a tyvek groundsheet, it's basically ultralight. The door is so large it can even be a shade or a cook tent with the outer only for groups. Instant, 4 seasons of roomy protection from the elements is what the Unna is. And can be pitched literally anywhere. Cheers.

Love my Unna, i find the large gap between the outer/inner helps with comfort in high winds, the outer moves but doesnt seem to transfer it to the inner, also stops a lot of condensation getting onto the inner as well. I pitch and carry the inner/outer separate, helps keeps the inner dry when on multidays.funny u mentioned the orientation to sleep, ive slept either end , never thought bout that, so much room inside its easy to move around in it. great vid, nice to see a good review of this rarely seen tent..ATB WJ

Happy to find this a Unna review. Very objective and thorough as usual Tom. I have this tent and have found it to be superb but….., I did opt for the inner mesh tent for warm weather use. Cross ventilation is poor in dead air warm environments. Thanks Tom

Excellent review Tom, now you've really thrown a cat amongst the pigeons for me, for 90% of the use this tent I think would really excel. Good tip about the freestanding design in regards to drying out. Loving the crisp audio by the way, that Rode mic is superb.

Desperately waiting for your review of Unna vs Soulo vs Akto because I’m just about to ( try! ) and buy a Hilleberg tent and can’t decide between the Soulo, or Unna or Allak 2…..
I would love the Allak , but it’s a tad on the heavy side at 3.3kgs packed, so the Soulo and Unna are almost a kilo lighter , but deciding between the Soulo and Unna is a lot closer.
The Soulo doesn’t have much interior space and is a bit fiddly to pitch but looks really stable in high winds, but the Unna is simple and quick to pitch and has a decent size interior , also if you swapped the poles in the Unna out to 10mm ones and used some extra guy lines I think it would handle severe wind situations a lot better, so I think at the moment I’m favouring the Unna.
Really wish I could see both tents side by side , I’m sure that would help me decide easier 🤷🏻♂️

Great review thank you! The Unna is my third Hilleberg and my favourite - it’s a pleasure to be in. I haven’t had it out in wind yet and, while it is aerodynamic over the ends, I do wonder how a strong wind shifting round to the front or behind would buffer it. When pitching the continuous sleeves mean no more guy lines wrapping themselves around clips, and I find taking down is even quicker as both poles can be removed simultaneously. One improvement I’ve made to the original is to add two extra pockets - the Unna yellow inner only comes with one and it is on the left at the front so not where I want it. (The mesh inner comes with two, diagonally set.) The flexibility of the usage is amazing and if I’m camping with my folding bike I unclip front left corner to expand vestibule as you demonstrated. The views from inside the Unna are terrific too. I’ve been using it this summer with a mesh inner and love that too, and not just for the ventilation - it really enhances the experience of living inside the tent. 😁👍👍
Hi Peter, thank you for your detailed comments especially as an Unna owner. I totally agree about the wind shifting direction to the front or back and this would be my only reservation. Even with 10mm poles the tent has little support from the front or back....The guy lines and clips do get tangled on the Soulo for example and all of this takes time to manage. The pole sleeves are so fast but possible less suitable for extreme conditions. As I mentioned the main body of the tent can be set up in about 2 mins with full security in about 5 so super fast to set up. Yes to the pockets as Hilleberg are very lean in this respect so organised storage could be better. Having the door the full length of the tent is great and lends itself to great views of the outside if conditions are good. Many thanks once again Peter for your continued comments on my videos. Hi Mountain Hopper how are you? Yeah the Unna is pretty long at 230 cm but does slope in quite a bit once you add height on top of a mattress. It's a great versatile tent for reasonable conditions.. The free standing issue is not a major bonus for me so I think I would prefer a Nallo 2 to be honest and might try to track one down for a full review... ATB Tom

Hillebergs own pictures and pitching video do a disservice to this tent. It makes it look like it has zero vestibule and the pictures do not show that low venting option.

Hi Tom I'm just doing some research on the unna and your my hilleberg guru lol.i was out in the snow last night with my kuiu and at 3.3kg with footprint I was thinking I didn't need this much strength because the winds were fairly light but I couldn't use my niak because of the snow so was thinking the unna might be a good choice even with the 10mm poles I'd still be saving a kilo have you heard any problems with the unna as it looks like I might be getting another tent lol 😁
No probs with the Unna especially with 10mm poles.. The vestibule is small and its a bit vulnerable from the sides but I suppose most tents have a better or worse orientation into the wind... Most Unna owners seem to be very happy with them and high winds can ultimately catch out most tents... Its never an easy decision so I hope this review helps... Best wishes Tom

Hi Chris, thank you for your comments. I haven't had the opportunity to try the Niak but it in theory as I am sure that you have looked is a little wider but not as long.. One of my other comments talks about the Niak and actually prefers it over the Unna but with 10mm poles. I personally don't fancy the lighter weight fabrics as they are just so prone to accidental damage but that's only my opinion.... ATB Tom

Hi Thorsten, actually I am just as tall as you are: 198 cm, and I have slept many, many nights in my Unna. It is true that we 198ers will touch the inner fabric a bit. But it doesn't prevent me from sleeping like a baby. However, when there is heavy condensation on the inner, you should protect the feet of you sleeping bag to get damp from it. I wouldn't change the Unna for any other.

I'd be nervous taking it out in winter due to the weak sides. Also it looks like it would be vulnerable when taking it down and setting it up in high winds. If you know it ill be nice weather, would make a nice spacous tent, but in the UK, Scotland in particular, the weather can change quickly without warning.
Hi you have definitely identified the weaknesses of the Unna. While its a great tent these are the reasons that I personally would not buy one... Weak from the side and even quite a large surface area for the wind to catch end on... Still so many owners never use to this capacity and just camp in good weather... best wishes and thank you for this comment... Tom

At any point did you wish the tent could be opened on both sides?
Hi Fred, the matching door idea would make the tent extremely versatile, especially for two users and extra gear storage. I suppose Hilleberg decide primarily who or how many the tent is for and design it around that... Adding extra features adds weight and costs and they have to decide where to draw the line.... I think with the double door option it would take the tent to 2.6kg and that would make it too heavy for some users... Not saying I am right here but just my thoughts.... I think you are exactly right. With Hilleberg and their thoroughness, adding another door would be a big deal, both cost and weight would be increased, but having the luxurious extra door for a tent that is already a bit heavy and a bit expensive and a bit luxurious might not be a big ask for folks using this tent. Folks want Hilleberg tents for all sorts of reasons, but two reasons to never buy a Hilleberg are weight and price.
Tom, very informative again. Would like to understand your thoughts on sleeping bag etc touching the inner tent. I'm 193cm (approx 6,3-6,4) and other than Enan and Helags have not found a Hilleberg I can lie in without sleeping bag and/or head touching the inner tent. With autumn/winter approaching and thus spending more time in the tent I'm looking for more interior space that Enan (which I own and love) provides, but find Helags too heavy for solo use...
Not even the Helags 2 at 2.4kg? I'm 209 cm so I really feel your pain, I'm thinking of opting for the Kaitum 2 (3.1kg) for solo use, heavy it might be but I'd rather have comfort than be cramped inside with my head and feet touching the inner. I tried an Akto and my feet and head were soaking. I'd love to try out the Unna it could possibly tick most boxes. Just a shame I couldn't take my Exped mat and sleeping bag to try the tents before buying one as they're not cheap if they don't suit.
I hope to film the Unna against the Akto, and Soulo over the next couple of days. I will show more of the length considerations for the Unna to try and help longer users.... Tom
@@Hightower600 You make a fair point. maybe I got too hung up on weight watching all these UL videos. BTW I would reckon a good outdoor retailer will let you try the tent either with you own equipment or something similar they have in store. I live near Utrecht in the Netherlands and here I have two retailers that have pooled some money together and operate a big place where you can really try all the tents from the most notable names
@@TOMHEANEY100 That would definitely be awesome. my tip: Enan seems better suited to longer users over Akto because of the construction with the single larger pole at the end (but is obviously not a red label tent)
@@sigaar109 I’m sure you are aware of Rob’s channel (also from the Netherlands). He is going to review the Hilleberg Helags 3 and post up a video on his channel soon, between him and Tom they produce the most comprehensive and in depth reviews of Hilleberg tents that exist.
That is a fair point about trying out a tent before you buy one. It’s something that I’ve been planning but with the shortage of models available at the same time it could prove difficult and I’d also have to travel to a different country but it would certainly make sense given the cost of the Hilleberg range.

Hi Tom, I'm thinking of getting an Unna. The quoted length is 230 cm from the base. What sort of length is there once you are on a mat? I'm not that tall (178cm / 5' 10"), but concerned my winter bag could touch the ends.
As a much taller person, do you ever find the footbox of your bag (or your head) ever touches the inner walls?
Hi Simsday, thank you for watching.. This Unna was borrowed to review so I am not regularly using it to give you a detailed answer.. But as far as I am aware I had no issues with the length.. I actually noticed length issues on the Staika more as the dome slopes in very quickly... All tents have pros and cons and a longer tent will then weigh more.. 230 cm is definitely enough for the majority of users and as I mentioned before I noticed no issues here in the Unna. ATB Tom

I have an Unna and love it. Just bought some extra 10mm poles. Now I have the option of "double poling" too (why does that sound so wrong?!).
I swithered over the Niak but ultimately went Unna. I hope to see a Niak sometime to see by how much their vestibules differ in practice.

I'm the wrong side of 65 now and have some minor mobility issues. Consequently I've been looking for a solo tent with plenty of internal space and ample headroom but which is still practical to carry. Initially I dismissed the Unna because I was under the impression it had no vestibule.
After watching your review I've purchased the Unna and found it ideal for my needs. My expeditions nowadays are rather more modest than in years past and it handles with ease the worst conditions I'm likely to currently encounter.

It is a great little tent and after using it it could be on my next tent list... As I have got older.. space for moving inside the tent is more important and the Unna fits the bill here and is also high quality and strong enough. BUT I have a Samaya Assaut2 8K and thats really working for me tested over many camps....Its 1kg lighter with the same space and so far about 12 nights (all my camps in it) condensation free... best wishes and happy Christmas.. I've found the One Tigress bathtub ground sheet fits under the Unna perfectly. I'm thinking of using it like that without the inner tent during the warmer months. Or alternatively finding a lightweight mesh tent that will fit okay. I know Hilleberg can supply a dedicated inner but it doesn't save much weight and is of course very expensive. I've got the MLD Duomid with a mesh inner. I'll try that for size. I haven't actually checked but I think using the Unna as a single skin shelter or with a very lightweight mesh inner should fetch it down to around three and a half pounds.

Really like that tent. Love the fact you can have the whole front open to admire the view if you are pitched in a scenic spot and the room it gives you for a relatively light weight. I hope Hilleberg don't increase the price after seeing this video . Thanks Tom for another engrossing video.

Excellent review Tom I’ve just ordered this tent, I’ve fancied one for a while. I sold my staika a while ago and want something to replace it. My Mrs doesn’t come camping with me very often but we could definitely both fit in the Unna by the looks of the sleep pads side by side. Looks a fantastic tent. ATB mate 👍

Great vid Tom! Hilleberg lend med one pre-production Unna when I hiked the Kungsleden back in the 1990s. Had my dog with me, we had a great time. Loved the tent, and actually suggested a few minor changes to Bosse. Those where the days!

Great review Tom 👍 I have a niak bought a set of 10mm poles (x3 for my allak 2 same size) it's pretty similar to the unna slightly bigger vestibule on the niak..inner door is just mesh also the fly doesn't go to the ground for sustained bad weather unna looks like it just pips it I think ?

Hilleberg should make a black label Unna option. ( Kerlon 18 fabric + 10mm Poles )
Plus improve the door with a full mossie net / zip down panel - for a nice view, even when lying down and keeping the Scottish midges at bay.
Yes I think in some aspects it would be simpler if they chose certain models and then just made yellow,red and black label versions.. Most of their tents need updating as the designs are very old and this is disappointing. The new tent options each year are also minimal... best wishes Tom

Hi Mechelle, The Unna... ,,,🤔💭 Another option for you . A super all-rounder but limited vestibule space for a longer trip.. A Hilleberg Nalo 2 is another option at the same weight here. More room inside, and decent Vestibule... The freestanding aspect of the Unna has many followers but personally I don't dig it at all. All tents need properly secured by pegs and a Nallo only needs 4 if there is no wind.. Select your camp ground carefully and you won't need to move it... Any other thoughts 💬 just ask and I will detail the pros and cons.. All the very best Tom
Great in-depth review of the Unna! I’ve always really liked the simple design and look of this tent, especially when the front of the outer is completely rolled back. Really surprised at how much room there was between the inner and the outer. For one person the tent looks like a palace!

if you want it with 10mm poles, GEORGE FISHER, KESWICK , no need to buy the tent then buy 2 10mm poles.
Got one coming in the mail to check out, bit on the expensive side but something that keeps the wind out a bit better than my UL stuff and also is free standing got me curious. Weight is more than our 4 man tent hehe!
Hey I hope that you like the Unna. There is no doubt about the big difference in weight and there is a big division in opinion between lightweight and ultra light tents. At the moment I am still in the lightweight category. For example if you use a UL tent and bring any extra clothing or gear to keep warmer due to the lower protection then you are reducing the weight benefit in the first place. Durability too can be an issue as if I had a DCF floor in my tent I would prefer to protect it with a footprint and here we go again adding weight... I must admit though that I reviewed an Zpacks tent for 4 season usage and was very impressed. However I don't use walking poles and when you add in one to the structure then the weight advantage again starts to reduce. Some of the fabric bonding on the tent was starting to fail as well so I am still not sure they are for me... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 DCF is expensive for sure! I have a dcf groundsheet for my bivy camping tho, to protect the thin silnylon bivy hehe! True about the temperatures, my Tarptent Protrail gets A LOT of air flow. I am going to check out a few different tents these coming weeks, looking for something for those rainy days out solo camping and fishing.

Tom... which tent would you choose for Northern "windy" Sweden/Finland use for one person (with room): Soulo, Unna, Niak, Rogan. I have the Fjällräven Abisko Lite 3 and other Fjällräven tents, but wanted more of a freestanding tent.
Weight is my issue. I have a Staika... but TOO heavy for one person (unless winter).

Hi, if weight is your issue then freestanding kind of makes that impossible. For example an Unna is the same weight as a Nallo 2 but much less inner and and vestibule space... An Unna has the space but not really great in windy conditions.. The Soulo strong but heavy and little space. So you need to decide on what is important to you. Niak or Rogan, light and spacious but are definitely 3 season tents and would struggle in winds over 40 mph. .Really sorry but I cant answer your question as you are listing contrasting variables.. best wishes Tom

My Abisko Lite 3 is amazing... but I want something freestanding. My Staika is like super heavy....

@@TheTrailDancer Yes the Unna has a lot of surface area for its poles to support so not a great wind tent.. The Rogan will be worse so maybe you just need to manage your space in the Soulo.... Tom

Thanks to your review, the Unna could become my tent of choice based on stability, compact size but massive inner volume plus inner height and the ease to pitch. Seeing the vestibule space was a real game changer for me.

Hi Rob, well it had to be done cleaning the lens.... Until I reviewed this Unna I would have been a bit reserved about it. But on pitching and using it on a number of occasions I was very impressed. For tall users its perfect too. ATB Tom
Hi Rob, I am 1meter and 98 centimeter tall and are quite comfortable in my Unna. However, I must admit that most times on both ends I am in touch with the inner, but it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe this helps.

Excellent review! After 25yrs of using different tents from all kind of manufacturers the Unna is the one that's staying with me. I've been using it for years now, can't fault it. Also packs away small, fits a 8L drybag.

Different strokes for different folks as they say, but one of the unmentioned strengths of the Unna is how easy it is to pitch in the environments that I encounter in the East coast of the USA. I cycle long distances and often stealth camp and this tent goes up in places that other tents which require staking and guying out rom more directions are difficult to put up with due to the narrow places it's been shoe-horned into. I really value that easy, straight forward pitch in tangled shrub and woods. We don't have wind to speak of here, unless it's a hurricane but we have tropical levels of heat and humidity - so ventilation is doubly important. I can only use my Soulo in winter because of the lack of decent ventilation, but then I'm often feeling pinched for space. I guess on needs at least four or five Hillebergs to live the good life. ;)

Once again, I find the thoughtful blend of details and the conclusions you have drawn from them makes your videos extremely useful. 1. Where the limit to wind resistance might be (and how to improve it) 2. There actually is a small vestibule even without detaching some of the inner 3. You mentioned that you can fit 2 large size Thermarest pads in there. Are you saying that 2 large NeoAir pads will fit if the heads are facing opposite directions? This would make the tent much more usable to me. Thank you.

I did enjoy the review and I can tell you put a lot of work into this.
I never considered the Unna for myself to be honest. It seems to be somewhat between a Yellow label and a Red label tent, just like the normal Soulo is somewhat between a Red and a Black Label ( with the 10mm Poles this becomes a clear RL ).
I think it could be great to use this if you travel with a Single Dog and need shelter for both, I probably would still pick the Nallo 2 over this, but if you are looking for a freestanding tent this could be an option.

Yes lots of work to film this over a week or so to get different locations and conditions rather than just review it from one pitch...... A person and their big or small dog would manage great here in the Unna but maybe more difficult if your dog usually sleeps in the vestibule...... I have always preferred the Nallo 2 over the Unna in the past due to greater space and the lack of it not being freestanding doesn't really bother me. Now though I am not so sure having used the Unna...... ATB Tom

I wonder what would happen if you did buy 8 additional guy lines with 4 more pegs and attach them just like the others, but with a 90 degree angle compared to the ones that are already there and going to the side.
(Two additional pegs and 4 guy lines in the back and two additional in the front with 4 guy lines)
You would possibly have a minimal gain in weight, but overall a great stability improvement.
( At least in my head that is ;) )
Owned 2 over the decades. If and when the wind changes, say no more. It has its place like any tent or shelter. Boundaries!!! Better and cheaper choices out there.

Over one thousand nights in an Unna, all over the world using 10mm DAC poles. Never an issue. Two words, site selection. Tent is still going strong. I calculate about 35p a night to date. Curious about the better cheaper options.

Any ideas on sun protection …how long does it protected for uv .
Hi thank you for watching, that's a tricky one.. Its a balancing act for all fabric types regarding, costs, tear strength, weight and UV Resistance never mind the other the many other aspects of the tent design. DCF fabric for example has better UV resistance than nylon but not many tent designs to choose from... Polyester too has better UV resistance but much lower tear strength. Thicker Nylon ie 70D will also have better UV resistance than the 30d used here... ATB Tom

Great review, i bought my unna with 10mm hilleberg staika poles, its bombproof, george fisher were the only camping shop to sell me the unna with only 10mm poles, every other shop wanted me to buy the unna then buy 2 10mm poles, the unna with 10mm poles , the only solo tent you will ever need, ,cheers

That's a good choice if you're planning for windy mountain use. I had my Unna smashed in a storm in Sarek, northern Sweden a long time ago. The poles bent and cracked while I was sleeping with earplugs. First time in my life I had to shout "help" , as I was sitting in the collapsed tent preventing it from blowing away, and needed the attention of my mates in the other tent. The remaining Hilleberg tunnel tent was getting close to also giving up during the night so we retreated to lower protected grounds. After that trip, I patched up the rip in the pole channel some some dental floss & silicone and upgraded to the thicker poles. A tad heavier but worth it for sleeping with confidence. Overall, Unna is a great 4-season tent. I also bought the all-mesh inner for summer use. Nice with a small foot print and free-standing for kayaking trips when camping on rocks.
I’ll be honest, I favor the shares of experiences when the tent (or whatever equipment fails). I don’t particularly judge it has a mark against the gear. In the right conditions almost everything will eventually fail. So I appreciate the story 👍🏽
