  • In this video I go through the Hilleberg Unna as a solo winter tent and summer trail tent for two. The Unna is a freestanding 2kilo, double walled tent. If you want to buy the tent in the EU we have them at great prices at www.backpackin...

    Thanks for this interesting video.
    I've used both the Akto and Soulo in the past. Nowadays I have a few mobility issues and find the Unna much more to my liking. I need a tent with ample interior space, plenty of headroom and a large entrance. Needless to say, I'm done with "coffin" tents. The Unna just about ticks all my boxes. I've upgraded to 10 mm poles and also doubled up on the guy lines, so that now the poles can be supported from two different directions. The increase in weight is negligible but the benefits are great.
    For many people, I suspect, the lack of vestibule is a deal breaker (me included initially). Hilleberg don't do themselves any favours by saying it has no vestibule. The issue is so easily solved. People don't seem to realise that you can, if you so desire, have a large vestibule and still leave ample room to sleep in. For one person that is.
    Anyway, thanks again.

      Yes, I agree.. the Unna was off putting for me for a long time. I have to say I am impressed with it and love the design. If I had to choose between this tent and just about any other freestanding alpine tent I would choose this one. (if weight is not most important factor). Great roomy tent, and I like the flexibility of it.

      I totally agree. Just like you, I also purchased the 10 mm poles and add extra guy lines. However, the way the Unna comes standard it is sufficiently sturdy to withstand almost anything nature throws at it.

    Interesting to hear your opinion about the Unna. I’m as tall as you, 191cm, and for me the Unna is just great. The best tent I’ve ever had. Well worth carrying the weight. When I stay below the tree line, in the woods, I like to combine it with a little tarp to create like a little front porch.

    My favorite tent. I own the Unna, Soulo red label and the Nammatj 3 GT black label

    Thanks for the nice review! Some comments from an owner of a Soulo and Unna: The Unna (same as with all red label / black label tents) is a true winter tent which can also be used in the shoulder season. BUT it is not a summer tent! Even though you have the top vent and partial mesh panels and you can raise and fix the lower back end, you will need the inner mesh tent in the summer.
    Even though there is only a small vestibule (you can tighten the middle guy line and get some space), you are able to un-toggle the inner tent (2-3 locatiosns + floor) on one side and get a temporary large vestibule for cooking or changing wet clothes without interfering with the inner tent.
    The main advantage in the 1P tent range for me is size + you can keep your pack inside the inner tent. Also the large opening of front entry is just amazing in good weather conditions while chiling in the tent and enjoying the views.

      Standard, it is not a tent for hot climates, I agree. But as you menstioned the mesh inner already, that _will make it a perfect summer tent!_ It is not cheap, but will make the Unna very complete and suitable for any situation. It certainly is my favourite tent in the world.

    Nice video. I have the Unna and like it a lot for winter camping. But for the other three seasons would you rather have a Niak or the Unna with the mesh inner? I suppose my concerns about the Unna with mesh inner for 3 season camping are that it 1) it has less interior space 2) weighs more, and 3) will be hotter than the Niak. On the other hand, the inner is much less costly than a new tent. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

      Hi, I own an Unna and have a lot of camping experience with it. And I do have the mesh inner too. I would buy it again without any doubt, since it adds a lot of extra possibilities. It certainly converts the Unna in a comfortable tent in hot climats.
      It has just the same inner dimensions as the normal inner. It also has just the same weight.
      Since the Unna outer tent/the fly offers a lot of ventilation options, it is a perfect combi with the mesh. When there's no rain, it is beautiful to leave the entire side of the outer open, I love it!

    Can the tent deal with heavy snowfall ?

      Yes, it certainly can. I own an Unna, and can tell from experience that it is very good in winter, also with a lot of snow.

    Almost bought the Unna ages ago for a PCT thruhike, but it was just too heavy for that kind of use. Wish they'd make a 2+ or 3 season version with lighter materials as I love the basic design.

      They make the yellow label tents - you can get an Hilleberg Enan for 1.1 kg :)

    • @marcoschuelermas

      Hi, I would then recommend to get the Hilleberg Naik (about 10cm wider than the Unna, 1.7 kg) or Nemo Galaxi 2P (only used) or the Nemo Dagger 2P.

    • @frstesiste7670
      @frstesiste7670 5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the suggestions. What I like about the Unna is the freestanding and symmetric design that will fit in small spaces. In my opinion the Niak is one of the most interesting tents from Hilleberg with a pretty good balance between weight, strength and size but it's not something larger than Unna I'm looking for. The Nemo tents look fine. I've only seen the specs and pictures but again - not looking for a two person (already have three, including an old Hilleberg) and I don't want to set up the inner first.
      The Enan: Weight is right. Not freestanding though but probably more storm worthy than a freestanding tent with the same weight (and materials). Maybe I'm just spoiled by using freestanding tents for too long, but I find them extremely convenient.

    I didn't know there was a shop in Umea... still there? where is it?
    Do you like th Niak better? Can the Niak handle winds say on the Kungsladen? The Allak and Staika are too big and heavy.. :(
    Thoughts?
    I'll try to stop by next time i'm in town...I used to live there!

    I have the Hilleberg Allak 2 for kayaking and shorter hikes and the Unna for longer solo hikes. For trips with my wife I have a Fjällräven Keb dome 3. All three are killer for Scandinavian use.

    • @windsup2day
      @windsup2day 5 місяців тому

      Will I find the Allak 2 too hot utilizing it in Maine kayaking if the temps are in the high 80's and 90 ° F? I was trying to get one tent for all. I will be alone but need a 2p for other occasions.

    • @garyhoffman1
      @garyhoffman1 5 місяців тому

      @@windsup2day The really great thing about the Allak 2 and 3 is the ventilation. There are 2 vents in the roof and with the 2 vents in the door, you get really good flow through. If you get the inner mesh tent, you will have excellent summer ventilation. You can even use it by itself if you get the stand-alone kit. These extras do make the overall price add up a bit but you will have one of the most versatile tents made. Fjällräven dome tents are very similar and have additional vents lower on the body. The Keb dome is heavier than the Abisko dome (similar to the Allak 2) but has the additional benefit of screen doors on the canopy so you can leave those open in the summer and not worry about mosquitoes. Fjällräven costs a little less than Hilleberg but uses the same quality materials. Both are absolute bomber tents that will last a lifetime. My Allak 2 is 10 years old and like new.

      @garyhoffman1 Thank you so much for this incredible information. Unfortunately, the inner mesh tent is next to impossible to find. It looks like Hilleberg has made a statement that they are not focusing on them at this time. I'll take another look at the Niak, the Rogan, the Fjallraven, and the Slingfin. Thanks again.

      I've just bought the Unna and camp on Dartmoor so used to rain! I've also upgraded to the 10mm poles for the wind. Got to say I love this tent and there is loads of room. The vestibule on its own is good. Tom Heaney did a good comparison and how to create the virtual vestibule. I can easily get in it without the inner becoming soaked. You can double pole it too to give it more strength

      Totally agree Sue.......the space between the inner and fly does a superb job of ventilating when you open the inner door at the top so that you only have the fly netting and then open the Outer vent. I was on Kinder last night in conditions that would have saturated 99% of tents and the inner was bone dry....its a keeper for me ;)@@suewheeler5795
