GAS is a real problem and a symptom of a much larger problem with consumerism, but it’s also a nuanced issue since certain equipment, within reason, can be hugely inspiring and give you access to hard to achieve sounds. Also, absolutely sick runs in that opening track

Very astute observations regarding a wider consumerist narrative. I’m combating GAS by indulging myself in SAS (Skill Acquisition Syndrome). A lack of gear is to be treated as a creative limitation. Happy playing, good sir. 👍

A nice trick to counter GAS is to learn a new song.
It gives (as much if not) more satisfaction than buying a pedal.

But what about the ‘new song’ powers that new gear always brings?! I haven’t listened to a new song in 10 years just in case.

@@richardsimpson2469 One week I think I need a Line 6 pod go, two weeks later it's a Les Paul Standard and now it's a Beat Buddy. Oh wait, maybe I should just buy two things at the same time to quieten me down. But if I get a super Strat maybe I don't need the Les Paul Standard. Hey, the Les Paul Modern seems cool ..... they say you can get p90 sounds as well as the humbucker tones. It looks great with the purple top.
If I win lotto I'm buying everything.

Write. I much prefer showing someone a new Song than a piece of Gear. I could never understand how People could play so well and never compose. It brings great satisfaction. You are actually bringing something out of non existence. This is how I think we are made in God's image. We have the urge to create.

Three solid body electric guitars, each one serving a distinct purpose; one arch top; two amps, one for jazz and one for everything else; five pedals, four of which live on my guitar’s pedal board and one reverb pedal that I use for my fretless bass. I play my bass through through a DI. It’s all I need… It only took 40 years (and thousands of $) to figure out the difference between what I want vs what I need. And I still have to fight G.A.S…

Who could have ever suspected that loving guitars, amps, pedals, gear etc could end up triggering a full-blown existential crisis...
methinks there's an opening here for a boutique brand of psychological counseling, designed solely to help correct this compulsion many of us seem to be having
of course paying for it would mean not being able to buy more gear, so on 2nd thought, forget it

@@johnnathancordy Hi John, yeah, I did. They're really really good. A friend of mine works at UA and brought them over. Sadly, I couldn't keep them, so I'm waiting for my order. What I particularly enjoyed about them is that I didn't find myself tweaking knobs like I do on the big modelers (constantly A/Bing other models, cabs, etc). I just set it, and it was good, and I played. ua-cam.com/video/eIBNkmafzjU/v-deo.html I can't say for sure that they're bettttttttter than other modelers, but they're very good and they got something right with them.

I used to own many guitars...around 30 at one point. One good friend told me that i should buy the best high-end guitar that i could instead, so that, when GAS hits me for another one, i could calmly walk down to my music store, try that new guitar, and realize that mine (my high-end one), is still simply better. So that's what i did...sold most of them, in batches, always keeping my two best ones, and always trying higher-end models, as money would come in, so that, in the end, i knew what blew everything else out of the water for me. Now i still own more than one, but for the right reasons, that is, that they all sound way different. 🙃

It's very cool and open-minded of you to have this type of conversation John. I am currently working through my gas. Helps to know that I'm not the only one who thinks they should have a car rig a travel rig and a gate rig as well as a fly rig as a backup to the gig rig. I don't even tour so I don't know what the heck I'm thinking!
If I may contribute to the conversation I think that there is something much more primeval that play here in terms of the way that our brains have become so dopaminergic. I recently started reading a book called the molecule of more and how it is that there are different thought processes for what is outside of us that our body tricks us into thinking that we need for survival versus a different process of appreciating and maintaining gratitude for what we already have. Gas is a real addiction and I would love to have an accountability partner who understands the struggle.

Good to hear your thoughts. I'm not the player you are and I don't gig. Last year I sold off all my equipment on Reverb. (Other than a couple of things no one wanted to buy!) A few weeks ago I bought an inexpensive Squier Paranormal Tele on a whim. My guitar tech is setting it up. I found your channel looking for info on what sort of modeler to get and ended up with a Helix LT which should be great if I want to do any writing/recording.
I own my house and I'm far older than you. My wife thinks the more classic electric guitars - Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, SGs, 335's and the like - are pretty and artistic so instead of buying paintings we're on a small quest to buy a couple of guitars every year and just hang them as art that I get to pull down every few weeks to play. They'll go to someone in the family when I die.
I'm done with pedals. For anything I do a modeled pedal is just fine. The most that's going to happen in my life is as a bunch of dad's we'll get a 1970's band back together for a few gigs.
Like you I own 1 acoustic - a 1971 Yamaki Deluxe that still sounds and plays like a dream. It's the only acoustic I've ever owned and at 51 years old there's no way it's leaving me now.
Personally I like your demos but I'm way more into your thinking videos - scales, chords, song construction. Coming from the Linux world I use Harrison Mixbus (Ardour is the Open Source version) but I've tried Reaper a few times. It's a nice enough DAW. I hope you'll do more videos on using your DAW, continuing modeler patches from scratch and things that aren't oriented toward spending money.
Best of luck in your quest.

On a practical level, we should probably start from our objectives… what kind of music do we want to make and what gear is essential to that end. However, there is another side to this that is (at least for some) more aesthetic… for example, when I walk into my office and see my guitar hanging there, it brightens my day whether I play it or not…. Similar to the way others appreciate art, furniture, action figures, etc. pedals, amps, and guitars are tools to make music, but they are awesome feats of art, engineering, and technology that make them more than just “tools”

I am not sure that having bought the HX Stomp for silent recording it is clearly way more useful than just that. I am really not sure I will be buying things again. I have a great board I am happy with, so combined with the Stomp I have an embarrassment of riches with which to create. New andsoistopped album is out this week all of which was recorded unsung the Stomp as an amp and with the addition of some fx I didn’t already have on my board. Fabulous.

In the future when i need more synth guitar, i'll probably need something else, but currently why even waste time to think about different gear? Same goes for my Ibanez AZ, btw - i've finally found a guitar than can do all i need it to, from jazz to Vai to Devin Townsend.

Hah, too late by a day! Pulled the trigger on an RGR5221 yesterday. Been wanting another Ibanez hardtail and pretty much all of their MiJ Prestiges have estimated delivery, from stores in Canada, dates into 2023. Found a shop that just received one yesterday morning... yoink! Too bad my local scene doesn't seem to have a lot of buyers. Finally put up my Kemper and probably should put up an Ibanez or two just to thin the herd. When/if I do move a couple guitars then I might think about a used helix LT or stomp for the office.

A nice distraction is to use your current gear in unique ways. For example, you could do a video using your Waza Airs with your Ampero. No guitar or headphone cables, and no latency! Guitar transmitter to a receiveer in Ampero Guitar IN. Waza transmitter in Left Mono OUT on Ampero with a flat EQ. Signal goes straight to your wireless Waza Air headphones with 'hopefully' no latency. You can play on the jon until your heart is content. Thank me later

Went through a minimalism purge period a few years back. I've settled in to a Kemper and I love it. But I am definitely guilty of buying more profile packs than necessary. Found out today that playing the guitars I've been gassing over is a great way to get over it. Tried Ibanez AZ Prestiges (AZ2204 and AZ-N) and found them uninspiring and hated the neck (awkward shoulders), PRS Fiore which was nice enough and on paper what I want but also pretty okay for the price and expected better fit and finish, Suhr Standard Pro which was beautifully crafted and sounded good unplugged but it didn't floor me and especially not costing 3600 Euros. Was pleasantly surprised with a Sire S7 though, sang acoustically (loudest of all I played) and played well and did not feel like it cost an eighth of the Suhr - body shape is pretty ugly though with the sweeping upper horn. Came in expecting to gas even worse over one of these higher end strats but I'm actually drawn more to my 2017 MiM strat. Will give it a pro set up and maybe convert it to HSS, I'm sure it will stack up quite favorably against any of the guitars I played today.

Yeah man, used for guitars is the way to go unless you *know* it’s something special you’re going to keep forever. For example, in the US a new Fender Player Stratocaster is $850. The second you open the box it’s suddenly worth at least $200 less, and if you’re patient you can score a used equivalent for as low as $350. If you want to experience a Strat and find one for $350 it may as well be a free guitar because it would definitely sell for what you paid within a day of listing it online for $350.

Thanks for this series. I really think this is great content to have on a regular basis (i.e. maybe once a month?) because it at least provides some balance for me between the amount of videos that I watch about new gear. One thing that I have incorporated to reduce gas is to limit myself to one pedal a month. That has yielded some success but still ended up with too much. So now I am trying to have a no new gear month so I can see if I can break the habit. 😅

Excellent encouragement to consider need vs wants. It’s fun to collect but sooner or later the collection takes over your life. Simple pleasures are the best. May I ask a question? For someone new to the world of electric guitars with no experience with pedals, what one stop pedal unit would you suggest? I like it simple, lots of reverb, some shimmer, not a fan of gain & distortion. Just want a good clean tone with ability to go mildly ambient.

I didn’t want to pay $3000 for a custom shop tele so I built a partscaster for $700, then built 3 more. Recently I bounced between buying a pod go for $500 and just getting the soundwide bundle with guitar rig 6 le for $50. What a rabbit hole . Bought the plug-ins. Still contemplating the pod go. However, my pod hd400 still sounds good for being a hobbyist and I recently added a tumnus pedal to the effects loop. RA BBIT HOLE! :)

My GAS mainly operates on a few principles... is it cheap or a geat deal? Could it be useful in a future gigging or recording situation? Do I like this enough that I'll make time to actually use it? Is it a trophy buy, i.e., I just want it? If the answer is yes to any or all of these, then I pull the trigger. John, being a homeowner has many perks, but you’ll find out when you do get one that the biggest drawback is your disposable income drops exponentially. Stuff you never imagined just breaks at the most inopportune times, and you may find yourself thinning the herd, so to speak, to cover repair costs. Unless you have massive savings and the gear collection is a separate budget item, which I would strongly recommend it to be. That may very well be the ultimate cure to GAS.

I'm in weird position where I want to fight GAS and to do so I have been shopping around for modeling amps/multi fx processors so I can use that instead of getting new pedals/amps all the time. But it feels counterintuitive to buy more gear so that I have the ability to not buy more gear.

I used to buy and sell quite a few pedals a year. I decided modeling had arrived so I sold all of my pedals and purchased a helix LT. I have not purchased a pedal since. For me, I just like having different sounds and the helix keeps me satisfied.

I wonder if GAS gets worse with increasing ability. I'm a mediocre player at best, and I know that no gear will make me play any better, so that kind of immunizes me against GAS. However, if I ever get significantly better, I wonder if that's when the GAS would kick in?

I have not had a lot of gear over the years, and of what I have had, a fair bit has disappointed me. Most of it is too expensive for that. So that puts me off a lot of purchases.
Another few months of John Cordy videos will get me to buy a Stomp, however. :)

Fighting GAS is unhealthy. If you got it in you, you shouldn't keep it in. It might be seen as "disgusting", especially if you are in a crowded place, but if that new Squier Paranormal Baritone Cabronita Telecaster in Oxblood ever hits your line of sight, you should let 'er rip.

In 3 years I went from owning 7 instruments (5 guitars, mandolin, banjo), 2 amps and a few pedals to owning 14 guitars, 8 amps and 10 pedals...(sold the mandolin, the banjo and 1 guitar)
I have had to throw out furniture to make room for everything...

but lately I've been thinking about getting an hx stomp because I'm more on the move than before.
i have an axefx2 and I'm a Petrucci tone chaser. I'll literally spend 6 hours dialing in the tone just to match it with a song that I like.
and what's still keeping me from buying the stomp is the fear that I won't be able to replicate the tones I've already dialed in, even though the stomp is more practical than the axefx, more affordable and has some features that are even better than the axefx (acoustic sim and ADT for example)
