@Scotty Kilmer. I had an 03 Matrix XRS with this 2zz-ge motor. It had 267,000 on its original engine. I beat the crap out of with with its high end power at 6700 - 8000 rpm. ALL THE TIME!🤪 There is a kit out there that fixes the issue of the oil pump sucking dry. The last owner had this done and I never had problems my whole ownership! Just did oil changes for 4 years and put 100,000km on it! I'd still have it if I didn't need a bigger vehicle!

Just regular service, oil changes, brake pads replaced, and she drove like a champ every single day. Scion tCs sold for $16,000 with a bigger Camry engine, 17" alloys, abs, traction control, 4 wheel disk brakes, power windows, power sunroof, am/fm cd/mp3 radio.
tC was a far better buy.

He said his odometer already went over once, so it had about 1.5 million Km with original engine and transmission, no major repairs, only oil, fluid, tires, shocks changes. Mexico is very hot, but cloth seats and plastic interior panels were all original and intact.

By seeing the many videos over the years it burns no oil, is efficient still, and by adding refrigerate, it still blows cold air. The only problem is with rust since I live in Central New York. • @davidobutt

Here in the UK the 1zz is awful especially before 2003 were there weren't enough oil galleries in the engine.
    They blew all the time.
They were eventually fixed later on and those from 2004 onward are very reliable.
As for the 2zz Scotty couldn't be more wrong.
They last really well here as long as you change the oil every 3000 miles.
If you don't then a better oil pump will be needed and if you race them a baffled sump off of an mr2 is essential.
2zz is the better engine all day long.
That 2001 obviously had an engine replacement to the better design to last

I owned a Pontiac Vibe with the 2ZZ-GE engine. I got it with 65,000 miles in 2012 and lost it to Pennsylvania rust in 2017 when it had 138,000 miles.
The engine has a bad rap, and maybe it deserves it, but I got lucky with not having any problems with it. And it was a blast to drive. The engine makes a beautiful sound at and above 6,000 rpm. It was a daily driver for my now-ex-wife and she loved it and running it at high revs even more than I did...I had to take perfect care of the thing to keep odds of failure as low as possible. Thankfully, she liked to go fast in a straight line.
Obviously, you have to thing long and hard before buying a car with one of these engines with high mileage (essentially all of them today) but they are undeniably fun.

Part of the reason why the higher spec engines don't last is not because they're poorly made, but the folks who bought them for that higher performance and usually beat the sh!t out of them, driving and revving harder. Just like the same reason you can find many 6 cylinder model mustangs holding up better than the 8 cylinder models.
