When my dog is so small that i have only left 4 pairs of prongs - so I removed 6 or 7 prongs - should I use a micro prong collar? Is there a minimum amount of prongs should be left to be effective?

  • @os26877

Interesting how he’s only showing training examples in calm, controlled environments - where you can achieve the exact same result with a normal collar. Take that same dog out into a more stimulating environment and it’ll start pulling, choking itself - with the sole difference that the prong collar will hurt more, making it more convenient for the handler not having to exert as much strength.
Yes, working with a normal collar is harder, but why would you want to train your (hopefully beloved) dog through pain, when it can be done in other ways?

You should be training in a calm controlled environment to develop a good foundation. You're setting your dog up for failure if you just throw them in the deep end. Work up to it, basic training 101

I am a retired school teacher and usually these training videos are hard to watch because the teaching is not good, even if the info they are giving is good. You, young man, are an excellent teacher! I’m sure you hear this all the time, but it’s never a bad thing to get another compliment, and you deserve each and every one of them. I’m going to do all that you suggest and them move to the video on stopping leash pulling. Thanks!!

I concur! Some of these other dog trainers are so off base as far as dog behavior goes, I can't believe they have such a following. I feel sorry for the humans who start applying bad advice, which negatively impacts them & their dogs. Canines can teach us so much about ourselves & deserve committed humans to care for them properly.

    Just wow 🤩
I signed my two year old pit up for 6 week training at PetSmart.
I was very discouraged when I got there and the trainer could barely make eye contact with him because of how scared she was. He’s not at all aggressive just reactive. I wish I would’ve came across your videos before spending my money 😭 but to be honest she definitely pushed me to get really serious about his training.

Also important what he said about, "I'll teach that later." Dogs cannot learn too many things at the same time. Get one command down during a session, not multiple. And stop training session when the dog is successful with that command , then in afternoon or the next day repeat same sucesssful command. Once the dog gets it, then move to the next thing to train; in this case, its the jumping behavior.

This was OUTSTANDING. You explained everything about the collar beautifully, and you explained and then demonstrated exactly how to use it. This ought to be required viewing for anybody who has the least interest in prong collars, and ESPECIALLY for the people who think they're cruel. If I had a dog that needed training I'd take him to you in a minute. Well done!

I used the Herm prong collar for the first time on my 1 year old Golden. Great dog but would pull, jump, chase, etc. like some dogs just do. I couldn’t believe the results. After a few light corrections, she was healing for our entire walk. She has never done that!!! Great tool!!!

I love the way you explain concepts.
You succinctly explained why I have one dog I will never need a prong collar (she is soft, and her subjective perception of pressure is a sternly uttered “uh-uh” ) vs GSD cross rescue completely untrained as a puppy who I has high prey drive and dog reactivity - waaay over to the right on the graph - and I do use a prong on him. Fairly and consistently.
A scalpel is a dangerous tool in the wrong hands - in the hands of a skilled surgeon it can save lives. The positive only gang might benefit from understanding this concept (or maybe they think surgery for cancer is too “invasive” or “cruel” - maybe they believe you can fix it with happy unicorn thoughts and treats?

I like how you explain things so clearly, and I like your channel since the first video I've watched about how dogs think and learn. That was an absolute gem! Some people anthropomorphize dogs by human intelligence, logic, emotion on them; but these people don't just treat dogs as human, they worship dog as some kind fragile but incredible emotional intelligent being (which is untrue of course).
If these people actually treat dogs like human, they wouldn't argue against applying all 4 quadrant of operant conditioning/instrumental conditioning, since it's widely applied psychology theory in human society. They chose to be ignorant about it when even high schooler level psychology class would cover this.

My dog is 55-60 pounds . I got the 2.25 and no way Jose . It does not fit . I had to purchase 5 extra links to be able to make it work. Each link is 4.99$ . I paid 40 something dollars for the collar plus the 5 extra links with the tax it cost like &29 extra dollars. It I decided to return to the website , it takes 15-30 days to get the money back and I really wanted to start training . So this collar on the website is costing me like 80$ . My dog is a normal Pitbull terrier . His neck is not to big. If anyone wants the collar I will recommend to get the 3.0 and the work from there . Otherwise you might risk having the same issue I got

Make certain treat rewards are quick so your dog understands the connection. If dog is waiting too long for the treat following positive behavior, the association will not be made. His added "chirp," sound following the behavior and just before treat is an added association.

Followed this practice, with two different dogs. My do, a micro golden doodle, always walked with one since he was old enough to go on walks. He walks fantastically, even if other dogs are in the area. We also used in on our son's 60 lbs. dog at age 2 who was a wild-puller. We did backyard training, and his very first walk was a game changer. He did fantastic. My son and daughter -in-law thought it was a miracle. They actually enjoy walks with him now. Thanks so much for this video.

I love how you teach and the psychological concepts. I have a question. For an American Staffordshire Terrier should I use a prong collar? She is 3 years old. She knows some commands from her previous owner. We went for our first walk this morning. She is teachable and we are building our relationship. I wanted to make sure that I didn't by mistake make her aggressive or damage our relationship. I am going to train her to be my Service Dog. Should I use a prong collar?
Doing all of this research since I was adopting "Sky", too much information will confuse the heck out of a person. Outside of teaching and training for her to qualify for a service dog. I'm just going to stick with you. Clear and information the way I like it!. This is WHY you do this. This is HOW they think. This concept ... I greatly appreciate you.

You are a really good teacher, but you’re charging the same price as a personal instructor coming to your home across 10 sessions. Most people aren’t willing to pay as much for an online course as for 1-1 instruction, no matter how good the course. And your course is really good.

After generations of training hunting dogs , and living for over 50 years with working hunting dogs , I know what I say . What You all are mocking about and call it "hot dogs" is the only way to train a trustable dog , who is able to make own decisions if nescessary . Dogs never need pressure or punishment . If You punish undesirable behaviour You don't make the dog understanding WHY he shouldn't behave like this . Thje behaviour will stay and the dog will try not to be caught . The only way to train dogs is to make him understand what we want WITHOUT pressure or punishment .

This is super helpful as I have a overly reactive 6 mo old cattle dog that needs this next level of ‘communication’ control. Her Brother just went through introduction of a prong collar with my husband and professional trainer. Let it be known she warned some dogs can really freak when they feel even gentle pressure at first because of that opposition reflex. Well Shasta screamed and flopped around like the drama king he is. It was ugly even though the trainer wasn’t hurting him. Took only a minute and he figured it out and has been fine after that. Just a warning for anyone trying this some dogs don’t react, some react a little, and some freak the F out. But they will figure it out. Now it’s my turn with sister Lucy. Thanks for this video!

I'm going to start from the beginning, following your steps, and hope for similar success - but it may be too late. A side note: he is not a puller and had learned loose leash walking from an early age. For quite some time the prong was very effective for my 120+ pound dog in high stimulus areas - until he learned that mom isn't very strong...if I bolt without any warning she let's go of the leash - instant reward! When I was young, my reflexes were spot on - I could jerk back at the exact moment and my dogs learned, quickly, not to lunge or bolt. Recently, my current dog tried just bolting - my instincts knew I would fall flat on my face and probably break something in the process (and he would be free anyway - so self protection takes over). After the first time, I knew he was testing me...he did it again, the very next day - for no reason. He had my number and now does it whenever he feels the reward of freedom is worth the short lived pain. I no longer take him for any walks or anything - because I can't take the chance that he breaks free and hurts something, including myself, in the process. I can tell you, he absolutely loves his new found knowledge - but now is stuck indoors until I regain my role.

I tried the prong collar on my dog, she's a pit bull mix with short hair and very sensitive skin (like most pitties). The collar fit pretty perfect, snug but not tight. But due to the short hair it would still slide a little while walking. It made a huge difference in my dogs behavior, I guess just because of the different feeling around her neck. No pulling. But unfortunately her skin got very irritated and broke. Does anybody else have a similar experience with their dog?

LOVED when you put this on your own neck - what a great way to show the right way! I do have a question about when you use the e-stim collar and the prong - both of them are supposed to be up behind the ears and up high on the neck - my challenge is having them both up there - and e-Stim the highest up then the prong. Thoughts?

If the prong and e collar are both on the prong should be higher than the e collar. If only having the e collar then it should be in the same spot as the prong- source (I own a training company in Texas lol)

I was watching a lot of Beckman's videos and he advises to use gentle leaders over prongs. Do you have any opinion on this?

Good to start with and it may work but some dogs learn to pull with them, like my Aussie hehe

I have Amstaff called Moon, she is only 8 months old and weights already 22kg. She would chase anything smaller then her, cats, dogs, kids, leafs, litter...😂 and today I have decided and bought the prong collar. I hope with your help I will be able to train her💚

I have a 7 month old Dalmatian , we’ve had only for 1 week, good disposition, he learns quickly, sit, stay, lay.. but does pull hard on walks, especially at park. Going to buy this collar. Question is: I am 61, wife 59 son is 26 he’s the actual owner of dog do you recommend only 1 person train with collar? And when trained should he behave properly when walking in harness no matter who is walking him?
