We owned a South African Boerboel. She was the runt of her litter and still weighed like 120lbs. She was the sweetest dog I've ever owned, loved to cuddle, hated water unless it was in a kiddie pool, and was terrified of thunder or any loud noises like a slamming door. Plus she thought she was a lap dog, so I always had to share the couch with her. Which means I got the front 6 inches of the couch and she got the rest.

This is good historical information. In present day cutting a dog's tail is seen to be cruel and has been banned in many places.
Probably because we’re not in ancient times anymore and we don’t often have to fight off lions and baboons or anything for that matter.

I wouldn't say most protective but probably a close second. My ovcharka was way more stranger aggressive and protective than my boer
I'm South African and my grandparents had lots of large dogs on the farm when I was a child and one of their boerboels still had it's tail and I got wacked in the face, and it felt like someone had hit me with a shambok across the face. That's another reason large dog breeds get their tails cropped. (If you're South African you'll know what a shambok is. we used to get hidings with those.)

It's also a good idea as they wag their tails at the speed of mach-jezuz and don't care what's in the tails immediate area. Often resulting in broken tails or cuts or nicks and blood being sprayed everywhere, because of the wagging at mach-jezuz thing... They also don't show pain and won't stop wagging their tails ... Anything tail height will 99.99% of the time be flight tested

If the dog does do that, then yes. However in most kf cases it's painful and unnecessary.
Also don't be mistaken (if from what I'm understanding you could be), just because they don't show pain doesn't mean they aren't in pain, but they do show it, they just show it very weirdly then most dogs.

That must be one of the oldest Boerboel that's alive. Otherwise i see zero fucking reason why a dog living in the western world in a domestic area needs their tail, ears or whatever cropped off. This is why i got a german shepard that is from a working line because the show line has been bred to have extremely rickety hips so they 'stand pretty.' Humanity is a pest.

I think cutting the tail (or ears) for asthetic reason is cruel and should be forbidden (here in Germany it is luckily). Cutting it because of work- or health-related purposes is something different, as it is for the better of the dog

Their tails are also a nusense with how strong they are. A relative that has a Boerboel with a full tail dented their box freezer... very strong tails. Also often used to pull on if they're in an active fight instead of sticking hands near their heads to get to a collar and getting an accidental bite.

Cutting a dog's tail wouldn't affect the traits found in it's descendants, it doesn't alter the genes they pass down. I don't see how this dog could have the short tail unless it was a selectively bred trait.
He means this one was cut to keep up with the breed standard looks. Of course cutting the parents wouldn't affect the puppies you are 100% correct
They cut the tails of after they were born, just like they do with the ears on some breeds.
Today some retards still do it to their dogs cause they like the aesthetics of it.

How do you like working with Boerboels, as opposed to the English Mastiff you trained a little while back? Do you think the Boerboel is as alert and vigilant as a Doberman or a Shepherd? It seems like a wonderful breed fas both a family pet and as a family protector.
as an owner I can say boerboels have so much more energy, and that training, like most things, depends on the dog and not the breed. Vigilance seems to be more dependent on the dog, our most energetic dog (blue) will bark before we see the people coming, our least energetic (capone) will literally not care. Blue is a female and capone is a male which probably pays a part in this bc males are less likely to have the strong guarding instinct mothers will. I would say that they would be equal in vigilance but boerboels could physically guard better as they can absolutely body someone by just jumping on them. Mastiffs are mellower and will probably want to be around the family more but it still depends, blue (our boerboel) is the friendliest around ppl even though she absolutely isn’t mellow - like at all. Overall I think boerboels are easier to train than mastiffs and are just as vigilant as other guarding breeds. If you’re not wanting to train as hard I would choose the mastiff b/c low energy dogs need less training but getting to a higher level of training w/ low energy dogs is harder. Same thing goes with heavier energy dogs: impossible to deal with without training, but much easier to get to a higher level of training.

Listen up folks, this guy knows his stuff. But, I have to disagree. I have purchased 2 from 2 different breeders. They USED to be this way. When you DON'T work the dogs they LOSE the grit and drives. The parents of one were FROM Africa. The next was also from solid lines. These dogs costs me THOUSDANDS OF DOLLARS EACH. I gave them BOTH away from free. They are NOT bred in 2023 for this any longer. They have gotten popular and as with most show and pet people, they NEVER work the dog and the fur mommys/daddys breed pure garbage that ultra freindly and have very little drives to do any sort of work. It's not worth it for me to go to a round 3 as I'm done with them. Theyre also very large and don't react in the way most assume with dangers. Most can be cracked in a matter of seconds with the trained decoy. What you here about in the comments and across the net about them "being sooooo protective" is coming from people who have never had a true trained personal protection dog, never had any experience in taining in the bite sports and what to watch for, and frankly like 95% of dog owners, do literally NOTHING with their dogs besides very limited basic commands, they work for 8hrs and go home and walk it at a snails pace around the short block with a prong collar bc it'll prevent the dog from expending the energy that has been built up all day and theyre lazy, then they go home, have dinner, then sit on the couch where the dog is forced to sit on a couch petted for hours until they go to bed... and the cycyle continues. For these dogs, any breed breed for working, they are pretty much all ruined. You have to really search for a solid dog that has the mental capacity, drive, mental stabilty, structural soundness, etc Again, 90% of all breeders don't know, care, etc to dive deep and after generations of doing nothing, the dogs lose it. I was lied to by the last 3 breeders on how protective and amazing they were. Nope, Ive worked protection dogs for 20yrs. I can see right through what these breeders and "theyre so proctetive garbage". It is protective for them bc they have NEVER done real work before. So anything like barking from the house is "whooooooa" for them. They haven't the slightest clues as to what offensive/defensive drives are. I'm good on all of that. I am in the market for a dog but see literally 1000s of garbage dogs. It's sad how all these breeders lie to get sales. Pay close attention to the cute photos of puppies but never show the parents. Or photoshopped images of tough dogs but have no evidence or proof of anything working, let a long a solid long pedigree or working history, etc. Look at how these breeders use "emotional photos" and "sales pitches telling you everything you want to hear" to get your emotions to buy. It's majority all pathetic. So if you are wanting to actually get a REAL dog from solid lines that is stable and does have the protective instrincts that are controllable, you're puppies with no training, etc are going to START at about $4500 and they go up from there to $100k. That's if you want a real representation of the breed and not a SHEEP in fake wolves clothing.

Yes I understand that back in the day docking the tail was necessary but why now their owners still dock their tail? Most likely they are not defending the house from lions or baboons nowaday.

Boerboel tails are thick and heavy getting slapped by them hurts, and it probably hurts them too. Breeder associations usually require ppl to dock tails aswell

I mean, they naturally have tails so there's no real benefit to docking them outside of ridiculous scenarios such as fighting baboons. Either way it's not a big deal though.

I’m pretty sure most people who live on dangerous farms have multiple of these muscular breeds, and so if a lion were to get close to the farm they’d see a pack of these guarding the place and would probably be scared off.
@@jayw9267 So your comment may apply to other predators, but I don't think a lion would be 'scared off' Additionally, lions move in packs, unless the solitary male happened by and in that case the dogs would be in peril.
@@monticella yes I understand these things. And again, I’m not saying it’s the perfect defense or the dogs would be 100% effective. I believe most lion packs don’t move very close to human areas, and usually at most a wandering lion might wander off alone onto a farm. I think you underestimate the power of numbers, because lions will avoid a pack of hyenas if they’re alone and outnumbered. These muscular dogs are like a pack of hyenas guarding the farm, yes a lion would destroy 1 or 2 of them individually, and a pack of lions won’t be threatened by it, but a lone lion against like 4 of these muscle heads might just avoid the confrontation. Plus if they did confront each other, I’d bet the dogs would at least stand their own ground long enough and make enough noise for a farm owner to run out with a gun or something. I’m just saying I can see multiple reasons these dogs could ward off lions, not that they’d ever kill one.

Sweet dog. I am glad my boerboel has his tail that is why I choosed him. Cuting the tail of the dog: 1-it is not fine with his balance in running . 2- The tail is related with the Backbones. 3- the dog is using his tail for a lot of communications with humain and other dogs so he will miss this important part in his life. 4- Dog will have pain and it is not comfort for some time after the operation.
