I flew it today at our club's warbird meet and the P47 and the radial was a big hit. I had to fly it several times to appease the masses. It's hard work but somebody has to do it....
That was just the best R/C video I've ever watched... I really appreciate your narration. And yes, the aftermarket manifold sounds so cool! Thanx so very much and... cheers
You have a very pleasant voice for narrating videos like these. It was easy to bond as a listener to a mentor. I could learn a lot from you! I subscribed with :) :) :)
I have to say, i love your review... well explained and narrated. I like the way you discuss what and why you did things in the video! Great job! (and no cheesy music just the pure sound of the motor)
Great sounding Engine, tons of power too. I can tell you are an old school mechanic by the care you are taking in breaking her in. Beautiful job my friend.... (It's just too bad you are a Packer Fan)! SKOL!! from a Viking fan neighbor..
No, no damn motley Crue, no humming, leave it like it is. why in the hell would anybody want to hear music over sweet sound of an engine is way beyond me.
Excellent video and oooh my that radial just sounds delightful thank you for testing both exhaust systems the ring exhaust thuds the air beautifully 😍 absolute music to any petrol head 😀 topman.
I’m surprised you checked all the fixings on a Saito! I have the triple along with 5 others, some 35 years old, I’d never check a Saito engine bolts, I have so much faith in their engineering.
Great video Thintz, liked your narrative over all the footage, well done and happy landings. (I always was a Saito fan when I flew...they make great engines)
Not sure if you're retired or still working. But if things don't work out for you you definitely should be narrating anything on TV. I'm not even into airplanes and that was fantastic I watched the whole thing. Great job!
Hello Tom, Papa Sal here from Reno....Still building...er.... assembling my GoldWing Pitts Python. Really leaning towards this awesome engine....and then HOLD ON Saito just launched a FG- 73 R5!!!!! WHAT??!! Boy I can't wait to see all the specs for this engine. Looking at what I CAN find it'll fit! But the weight specs are a miss print, but the you tube video teaser is awesome too! Again I want to thank you for ALL the info videos you do......Please keep them coming. OBTW Horizon Hobby has pre orders for October on the new radial.......GULP!!! $2k ouch!
Apparently, even though this is a 4 stroke engine, it requires oil premixed into the fuel. The owners manual states, "Regular gasoline:Oil=20:1 (Volume ratio)" For break in, instead of a rich mixture, why not just add a bit more oil?
As far as RC 4-stroke engines go, just about all of the commercially available ones use a fuel/oil mix. They are not like the 4-stroke lawn mower or automotive engines that keep their oil in a sump. The rich mixture may be recommended to control the engine temperature during break in rather than to add more lubrication.
Critical Altitude I see. You mean 4 stroke model aircraft engines, including radials. I was thinking more on the lines of the full scale radial engines like those I worked on, many years ago in the Navy. The Wright R-3350 and R-1820 In the SP-2H and US-2B respectively. Several of the P-2 aircraft went to Argentina and one to the Navy museum in Pensacola Fla. We used to joke about restoring antique aircraft. This was circa 1973... www.navalaviationmuseum.org/attractions/aircraft-exhibits/item/?item=sp-2h_neptune
Yep, the model engines like the Saito are far simpler than the radials in the full size aircraft. There are examples of functioning small radial engines that are scaled down versions of the originals, but those are typically not used on aircraft. I've seen the P-2 at the Pensacola museum when I visited. Great place with a huge variety of aircraft and historical pieces.
Very nice video. Thanks! I'm off to the 65th (Wow) Toledo Expo Saturday. (I think I have been to better than half of them. All the way back when they were at the Sports Arena.) I will likely return with the 33cc version for my GP Waco ARF that has been in the box to way long. Like you, I love the sound of a round engine.
Ok, I get it, you review lots of stuff. Not a casual RC nut like the rest of us. Thanks for the reviews. I think I'm going to love that Radial. I am putting it in my Byrons Staggerwing.
I really really like your videos. Extremely helpful. I have a Balsa USA SPAD 13 with a 35cc DLE. Would this Saito 60 R3 be too much for this plane? Thanks.
Great video! Starting from narration, going through flying and ending on editing. I would like to also use this engine on my next project. What can you tell about it after some time? Is it worth it? Does it work good? Thx in advance.
Another great vid. Very informative. My long term goal is to install one of these in a warbird and enjoy the experience. Your review has really given me insight on what to look for in a good quality gas radial. Kudo's sir! Subscribed.
Nice looking engine, looks like a fun hobby. I agree the new exhaust sounded much better, did it add any performance as well? I am also curious as to what engine size is recommended for the plane, if some people didn't think it would have enough power to get it off the ground? Thanks in advance for answering, Tom
The plane is designed for a 40 to 50cc engine, the Saito is a 60cc. There is a belief that the multiple cylinder engines produce less power per cc than do the single cylinder engines. So far that has not proven to be true with this engine.
Thanks for the reply. I have never heard that theory before... I guess the belief being twice (or more depending on # of cylinders) the friction from con rods, rings, valve train and such, robs the engine of power. However, I would think it false, as we all are driving multi cylinder vehicles, as opposed to 350 cubic inch 1 cylinder thumpers in our trucks and cars. Were there even any single cylinder aircraft produced? Maybe they are only referring to models, but I would think parasitic power loss issues would be there regardless of scale size.... Thanks again, and have fun with the plane..
Great video Fantastic I was wondering about your prop selection . Has the notion of a 3 blade prop come to you at all I've got a good friend who fly's and his Old Sea fury really came alive with the 3 blade prop using your exact same engine .and it gave the aircraft that great authentic look .. Great flying ..
I have been having good luck with the traditional 2-blade props. the biggest reason I don;t experiment with a three-blade prop is cost. I pay for everything myself so that kind of outlay impacts everything else in the flow of content for my site.
Great video!! Many thanks. I am breaking in my FG60 R3 and following manual instructions. However when I rich and make full throttle the cylinder #3 does not fire…. Is it normal? Should I rotate the engine for break in? I appreciate any help, thanks
Since I've had just one of these, I really can't say what is normal or not. I didn't have those issues with mine and just followed the manufacturers instructions.
It's not SAYTO, you pronounce the company name like SIGH TO. I should know, I'm married to a beautiful Japanese woman. As far as being powerful enough for your Yak, it looks to be exactly the right engine. Nice balance and almost scale like flying. Nice job.....
Thank you so much for the reply. Sorry for the questions but your setup sounds amazing. So... what oil and ratio? And finally, stock exhaust vs aftermarket ring? Thanks ahain
Jeffrey314159 four stroke motors need odd number of cylinders, as the cam is actually a ring disk with the gear on the inside. The cam for this 3-cyl has two lobes for intake at 180 degrees, and two at 180 degrees positioned 90 to this. A five cylinder would have four lobes set at 90, and so on. The gear on the crank and the planetary gears set the ratio to the internal cam gear to make this 120 degree fire symmetrical and balanced which is not possible with an even number of cylinders.....If we go Two-Stroke however it doesn't matter and even will work because it fire's every stroke. I not only have a radial engine like this, I 3d-printed a working "visible" 5 cyl moki-radial engine that demonstrates this on four-strokes.
So I'm curious on an update on how the engine has been regarding reliability since install? I have one I'm putting in a TF P47 Razorback just like your other video but worried about reliability as some friends have had cylinder mounting flanges cracking on these 60R3's. Have yours been good?
I've not had a bit of trouble with my Saito. I did adjust the valves recently but didn't find anything really out of whack there either. Nothing has cracked, blow up or anything else. It just keep puttin' along sounding really nice!
This is the first Saito I have had in 30-some years. I can say that lots of people are flying various models of their engines and they keep selling. There has to be a reason for that kind of longevity!
Hi, after seeing some of your vids I have just ordered the FG60. I will be installing it on a TF razorback P47. My question is do you have to pressurize the tank with this engine? Seems to have some two stroke traits.....
Than ks for writing, and you are going to love this engine! I have not pressurized the tank. I use a standard three line setup and it has worked fine. No issues at all. One tip I can give you is that with the top cover opened as I show in the video I can reach in and put my finger over the velocity stack that comes on the Saito engine. I hold my finger against that and flip the motor twice before turning the ignition on. Then it seldom takes more than two flips and it is chugging along nicely.
I have a question, Let's suppose a thrust of an engine is measured horizontally just like in this video is 25kg, would it be same vertically ( straight up from the ground)?
Hallo Tom, are you still happy with this engine. On Internet there are a lot of people who say it isn't a good motor and need an update from Morris Mini Motors from England. Personely I don't believe that because Saito is knowing what they are doing. Please send me a comment. Greatings from Holland.
I never had an issue with this motor and it was box stock the whole time. Flew it on three different planes, no problem. As far as I know it is still flying in the 91", 30-pound Waco with the guy I sold it to, stock, no modifications.
Good point Arthur, I was thinking the same when I saw this video, specially because my local hobby shop has this engine on sale and I was reluctant to buy it because all I read about the wrong spark advance that comes from the factory and also about the intake problems and the corrections that are needed and Morris is selling. But apparently Saito decreased the compression ratio changing with a new piston and also reinforced the base of the cylinder, so something might have been wrong for them. Who knows were the truth is, may be in between Morris solution and the new Saito modifications?
@@alejandromascitti541 I had lots of people telling me this engine is not able to do what I was doing with it. On the Internet, facts matter little apparently. I even had a guy tell me "he could clearly see a DA70 in the cowl" in the video. I checked with everyone at th3e field when we made that video and none of them will own up to swapping the Saito out for a DA. Whoever did that, also swapped the DA out for the Saito before I left. I guess I have sneaky friends.
Nice video , I just got the saito 60cc radial and was torn between a Top Flight P47 or a 50cc Yak 55 with an 86.5 wing . I thought if I get the P47 I wouldn't be doing much aerobatics if I got the Yak I would be able to do more aerobatics with it . Its the sound mostly why I had to have it . I did go with the Yak and the Keleo Muffler , mine didn't come with a smoke nipple but no big deal ill put one in myself , got to have smoke , So I was wondering what aerobatics have you tried with it in the Yak . Will it hover nice and pull out ok ? I'm also putting a Cortex Pro Gyro in the plane . Thanks
There is a story about me shoving this engine in my P47 with lots of flying there. I am scrambling right now trying to finish a bunch of stories but none of those on the radial as I just keep flying that whenever I get some time.
Extremely well explained and filmed. I found this vid to be very interesting and well done...and I'm not even an RC guy.
Same here. I was just searching for different engines and am more interested in engines for mini bikes. This is very cool though. Excellent video.
One of the best engine review videos I've ever watched. Poignant, simple, good sound, and a great model as well.
I've always loved Radial Engines, There is just something special about them and I love the way they sound.
I flew it today at our club's warbird meet and the P47 and the radial was a big hit. I had to fly it several times to appease the masses. It's hard work but somebody has to do it....

I wish I could have been there.
That was just the best R/C video I've ever watched... I really appreciate your
narration. And yes, the aftermarket manifold sounds so cool!
Thanx so very much and...

I've been in love with these for so long. Now that I'm getting back into RC, I feel the need for one again.
You have a very pleasant voice for narrating videos like these. It was easy to bond as a listener to a mentor. I could learn a lot from you! I subscribed with :) :) :)

Beautiful job my friend.... (It's just too bad you are a Packer Fan)! SKOL!! from a Viking fan neighbor..
You have a fine touch with the flight controls doing aerobatics and you greased the two landings I saw. Good video, I'm subscribing.
Very nice video. but one thing that made it much better than many other RC videos was that you had NO FREAKING MUSIC. Big thumbs up.
So I don't need to hire the guys from Motley Crue? I can;t afford that anyway. Maybe I'll take up humming...
No, no damn motley Crue, no humming, leave it like it is. why in the hell would anybody want to hear music over sweet sound of an engine is way beyond me.
I have this mental movie right now of FOUR of those powering a scale model B-17, the sound would be AWESOME!
I flew the radial/P47 on July 4th, earlier this week. Sometimes I just gotta hear that radial in the sky.
Excellent video and oooh my that radial just sounds delightful thank you for testing both exhaust systems the ring exhaust thuds the air beautifully 😍 absolute music to any petrol head 😀 topman.
Sounds like a real aircraft. I have a Saito radial as well, only in a Boeing PT-17 Super Stearman. Gotta love it.
The way you do your videos is excellent. Great commentary- always on point! Thanks
I think ive watched this video 20 or 30 times and i like it more every time. Im only a couple of weeks away from ordering one. Gotta gave one!
I just installed a brand new Saito 60 on my Fairchild 24.....thanx for the info!

My first motorcycle was a 1959 Honda 65 cc. It drug me up and down the street just fine. Very cool sound on the exhaust.
Watching this video I can't help imagining how cool this engine configuration would be on a motorbike, probably with the crank facing fore-aft.
Nice ... very, VERY nice! Doesn't it sound wonderful? Really good video Sir - Happy Flying.
Beautiful engine, nice airplane, and an excellent demonstration of flying skills.

That is a good running engine, and really sounds good with the after market exaust and you seem to be a really good pilot.
this made me smile.

The extra fuel when run in a rich condition goes a long way to keeping the internal parts of the engine cooler as they wear in to each other.

Great Video ,Great explained, well filmed 👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent video and commentary my friend.
Very interesting video of your radial engine.
Doesn't she sing pretty!!!! VERY nice engine ... I'm so jealous!
Love that sound!
This is beautiful. My 66 beetle with an after market exhaust, kind of has a similar sound.
Super cool....Id love to see those engines being built (Im a machinist). Really nice looking engine, sounds great!
Great sounding motor. GO PACK!

another great video, thanks for your hard work.
Slickest landing you'll see
The motor is one thing, but the pilot is awesome.
Its the suspenders...
Great. I already use redline synthetic for my shifter kart. I thought I read somewhere that they recommend between 15 and 20:1
That's one of the best things I've seen today.
Cool vid, thank you for sharing.

I have the Saito 20cc radial.Should I do the same break in process as u did?I hope mine sounds close to yours, awesome plane too.
That is a fantastic sounding motor
Lovely video, thanks for putting this together and sharing. Awesome motor.🖒
Are you running this engine on just the pumper carb? Or are you using a fuel tank that is pressurized for your engine exhaust ring?
No pressure line, just the pumper carb and all was fine with it.

I use nothing but Redline Syntetic Racing Oil and for the radial around 40 to 1
Nice work. I have the glow version with the keleo exhaust on a yak 54m fabulous to fly and hear. Have a great day, happy flying.
Why is it important for these Radial Engines to have an odd number of pistons/cylinders? Is it necessary to create a differential with this asymmetry?
In the radial engine, they fire from no 1 then every 2nd cylinder after that
Jeffrey314159 four stroke motors need odd number of cylinders, as the cam is actually a ring disk with the gear on the inside. That is a nice sounding engine!
An interesting video, very well done
Sounds fantastic!
Best engine review ever.

great brake in time ,nice,n slow! sounds GOOD to!
Saito engine ,one of the most popular and respectable
i like the soundof it
Nice sound...
Really enjoyed your commentary
Good job, I watched it several times
Hi, after seeing some of your vids I have just ordered the FG60. I will be installing it on a TF razorback P47. My question is do you have to pressurize the tank with this engine? Seems to have some two stroke traits.....

Awesome sounding engine,
The carb is kind of like what you see on some nitro motors.
NICE BREAK-IN... REAL "engine guy"
I have a question,
Let's suppose a thrust of an engine is measured horizontally just like in this video is 25kg, would it be same vertically ( straight up from the ground)?
Yes

great plane
nice engine
sweet motor , plane and great video ....liked subbed.....j
Sounds like you are reading a script....cool motor....the plane is awesome too....that motor should have several horsepower.
Sweet Landing!
We are due an update on this unit. Are you about ready to give it to us?
: - )

Thank you. I look forward to it, as soon as you have time.
Fantastic video!
Actually, I am a Harley believer... a believer in bolting up a basket on every Harley to catch all the parts that fall off...
May a diseased Yak leave a series of disappointing bowel movements across your yard...
did you have over heating issues with one cylinder?
did not. Usually when I checked them the cylinders were within 30 degrees of each other if not closer.
Did you do the timing modification that Morris recommends? Are you still running this stock out of the box? Sounds pretty good to me if it's stock.
Mine was box stock. the guy that bought it is still flying it box stock also and he has been flying it a lot in the Waco
