  • (Week One, Part 1 of the "aah!" mini-series). Diaphragmatic breathing is one of the most effective tools for anxiety reduction, anger management, emotional regulation and other issues. This video discusses the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing and includes the WHY of how it is helpful. Part 2, the demonstration of diaphragmatic breathing, will be released tomorrow, Wednesday at 8am. Check back!
This video is part of a three week mini-course to help you access feelings of peace and safety. Participants in this three week course found these techniques easy to implement and very effective. They reported feeling significantly calmer, less anxious, and lighter at the end of the three weeks. Make sure to tune in next week for the second week of the program!

Hi Graham! Yes, diaphragmatic breathing is so simple, yet so helpful! Thanks for sharing how it has helped you. And yoga is also a great tool!

@@BarbaraHeffernan I didn't understand how yoga helped me, and being a very analytical thinker, it is important for me to know how it works. I had a sneaking suspicion that the diaphragmatic breathing somehow told my brain that everything is ok and that it's not necessary to be in flight/fright/freeze mode. Just knowing that this is how you easily communicate with the amygdala is such a "aha" moment for me. Thanks again!

😮 This is eye opening to the point of, I think this is CRAZY REAL! This happens to me over and over and over and over and over in a day. I’m going to set my alarm and give this a go today.

A happy, healthy and fulfilling New Year, Barbara. I'm watching and taking notes, really grateful and learning a lot. When you mentioned the video on the Triune brain I smiled cause I watched that recently and found it very useful, but it's not linked to this video as you may have intended. Not sure if it can still be done now but thought I'd mention it in case you still want to link it, think people listening to the mini series could benefit from that. Think I'll rewatch it myself after I finish this playlist.

This helps so much. Once you're aware of your breathing- many of us realize we breathe with our shoulders/chest and not belly. Meditation, yoga and learning vagus nerve exercises all recommend diaphragm breathing.

Whenever I've tried this I was feeling out of breath and like I need hyperventilate, so I am stressed even more. I am sure that those are very useful techniques and that I'm doing something in incorrect way. Willing to try again and hope that this time I would do better.

    • @BarbaraHeffernan

Yes, sometimes people can find it stressful to focus on the breath. Tomorrow at 8am EDT I'll release the video demonstrating the technique - give it a try with some patience! Also, maybe just do it a little "lighter" - don't try to force it. Hope that is helpfuL!

Yes but you are strengthening your diaphragm and it will get easier the more you do it. In the long run it allow you to breath more efficient and get more oxygen into your body

It often helps to really relax the abdomen, as well as slowly exhale.
If we inhale too deeply, too quickly, and without proper exhale..:it stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which is the opposite of what we are trying to do.
Slow inhale, relaxed abdomen and slow exhale sometimes a mantra like "letting go" with the exhale helps.
Way back when, when I tried deep breathing...I didn't get it either. I thought it didn't work. It took many different tries and yoga definitely helped me coordinate the breathing and fuller release. 💫
