I just installed the steering coupler in my 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo. I have watched 100's of FYI video's on Facebook and you could not have made this video easier, less intimidating and visually clear. I have watched many Chris Fix and Scotty Kilmer video's who have million's of followers and thought they were the best. You have set the bar extremely high...

Thanks very much, you are an absolute legend!!!! Just did this on my father's 2009 i30 (right hand drive Australian 2.0l petrol).
His mechanic had previously done this repair and charged him $2000 aussie, said he had to change the whole unit out with second hand one, but explained to me that there is a rubber coupling that breaks!!!
It took me just over 3hrs to fix including getting the part which the Hyundai parts centre gave me for free!!
I couldn't have done it without your clear, concise instructions!
    LEGEND !!!
    THANKS, Matthew, Australia

Sir, I have got to say this is the bet diy auto video I’ve ever seen! Not only are you extremely thorough but you are calm an encouraging as well. I watched several videos on this issue and none of them come close to what you’ve provided. I am a moderate experienced car guy and can get around all vehicle components but you made this job a breeze. Thank you so much for providing us with this content. If I could give 5000 thumbs up I would. Thx again!

I have never done any work on my own vehicle but I have watched a thousand tutorial videos on "diy" things and let me say... I was super impressed with this guy! He was very clear and precise with his instructions without giving a ton of useless information. I hate when someone keeps stopping to tell you little personal stories that they are reminded of and you have to wait through all of that nonsense to get back to why you are watching the video in the first place. He does none of that! He shows every step as he's explaining what he's doing and I had no trouble following his guide... I absolutely think this gentleman goes above and beyond! Even giving you helpful hints on how to remember radio station pre-sets for your customers. It's the little things that really show you pay attention to detail and care about doing your job correctly. The best by far though... The encouragement he gives at the beginning of the video, so you're not intimidated by the task at hand. It was top notch advice on how to fix this issue on your own and I will recommend his videos to everyone that may need this type of help! Great job and Thankyou for saving me a ton of money and time! 👍🙂 Very impressed!

Videos like this may have just saved me quite a bit. My 2013 Elantra started going clunk when I turned. I took it in to my regular mechanic and they told me I needed to replace "the power steering system" and it would be $3200. I was surprised and told them I'd have to think about it. Did some thinking, did some online research, and discovered this is a common problem fixed by a $10 part. I don't have the time to do the fix myself but I have an appointment with the dealership to get it done in a few weeks. They seemed to know exactly what it was on the phone. Thanks for posting this video to help people like me.

Great Job! As a self-proclaimed shade tree mechanic myself, I really appreciate the detail you went through explaining how to make this repair. Also, want to compliment you on the encouragement you convey to your viewers. Most repairs can be made by even the most inexperienced person if they will take a moment or 49 in this case :) to follow good instructions. And this video IMO is an example of good instruction. Can't wait now for the part to arrive and fix my Hyundai. Well Done!

    @buff985 2 роки тому +5

Thank you so much for a very informative video.
To note, I just did this on a 2012 Elantra GLS 6 Speed Manual and there were a few differences.
    1. No knee airbag
    2. There was a metal brace plate where that knee airbag would have been, a few 10mm bolts and one 10mm nut to remove it.
    3. A few more connectors on the wheel that had to come off (pretty self explanatory once you get in there)
    4. I took the bolts out of the seat to move it back, couldn't fully remove it as there were airbag connectors under there as well.
    Couple of notes.
    1. You will definitely need longer than a standard 3/8" ratchet driver to remove that back bolt for the steering column. The head likes to round if not perfectly straight and takes quite a bit of "ugga duggas" to remove.
    2. You definitely need a second person to help line up the tab into the slot as well as attach the nuts to reattach the column. The piece that the bolts press into (to reattach the column) also can slide, so make sure you have it slid back far enough to match the bolts.
    3. Some other videos show removing the brake switch, I did not need to do that for my application.
    The hardest parts were
    1. Removing the bolt from the back of the column
    2. Lining the tab and bolts up to reattach the column
    3. Finding the right angle to get the bolt back in the back of the column.
Take your time, relax, and you can do it. I wouldn't recommend if you're claustrophobic as it gets a little snug in there with the column and 3 pedals.

What an excellent video! Very detailed, great camera work!! Going above and beyond to program back the radio stations just shows how much you care about your customers!
I thought that I had to replace this part on a 2008 Elantra but the problem ended up being the 2 bolts at the steering column U-joints - the one down on the floor and the one up just below the EPS assembly. Both bolts were loose (had to turn them more than a full turn to get to the specs of 25 lb/ft). Once I did that the small clunking sound and play in the wheel was gone and the car tracked much better in a straight line on the freeway. The bolts being lose even threw a C1259 code about the steering sensor. Anyone having a small clunking sound and wheel play - check those bolts first before you go any further.

This is the best video covering this issue and repair, thanks! Great detail, pace, and tips.
Just fixed my daughter's 2011 Elantra GLS today and wanted to add some notes that might help someone else:
    1) No knee air bag - There is instead a bare metal frame piece that is held in place by five 10mm bolts that you just remove.
    2) Different wiring harness clip - In the video at 20:46, there's a tab that the harness clips to, but in her car, the harness is attached to a white/beige plastic piece that's then held to the column by a single screw. To free the harness, you have to remove that white piece by unscrewing it from behind.
    3) Steering wheel not centered after reassembly - Too much to spell it all out, but the upper section (steering wheel, controls, support bracket) can then be pulled off the lower section (lower shaft, steering-assist motor, control box). Same steps, but keep that (cursed) rear bolt in place, removing only the two side nuts holding the column up. Separate upper from lower, fix alignment, and slide back together.

      @robbieg.3462 Рік тому

Hey, I think you may be addressing here the thing I’m having trouble with. Could you please help clarify.
      1) so I am trying to put the whole shaft back in but once I get the back bolt holder thing in , the 2 front bolt brackets are not aligned, in fact the are completed crooked off to the side. During the disassembly, the front half of the shaft came out from the second half so I think that may be what messed up the alignment.
Are you saying that I should take out the first half of the shaft again, adjust it alittle and see if it will line up?

Tip to anyone that’s gonna do the same thing, when your putting the column back into place just barely put on the two washers holding it from the top. You really need the wiggle room from the front to be able to realign and put the longer bolt holding the back.

Just performed this on a 2013 Elantra GLS. The back pivot bolt is a monster. Had to muscle it loose at the risk of bashing my knuckles against the column. Putting it back in is equally challenging. Good tip about threading the front two bolts in first loosely so that you have some wiggle room getting the big boy (in the back) back in. Overall, nice video and excellent instruction. For anyone about to tackle this, allow yourself plenty of time and stay patient. It is doable by ANYONE and you'll wind up saving a cool $300 in labor.

ONE TIP- going back in the slot with the tab at 12 o'clock, my bracket (kia soul) was rotated to about 2 o'clock and couldn't understand why. PANIC!!! Stopped to look and THINK, and realized that opening the tilt lever allows the bracket/column to rotate! It was easy after that and installing the rear bolt. Thank you sir

Outstanding video to repair a left-hand drive, GD series i30. A few points not mentioned that I learned the hard way that are handy for RHD owners.
    1. For Right-Hand drive vehicles, the pivot bolt is very hard to access as the fuse panel is mounted on the right and you will need some serious contortionist skills.
    2. When dropping the column, make sure the telescopic locking lever is in the locked position. Failure to do so may result in your steering wheel coming completely off the column shaft causing the column to drop onto the module.
Thanks for the guidance. even with my difficulties, it took me 3 hrs to complete (2 hrs accessing and remove/reinstalling the pivot bolt)

I just finished this job on my daughters 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS using this video as a guide. This video was great. My car and I am assuming everyone else there might be some slight difference do to different options each car has. Mine did not have the lower air bag but had a lower support brace instead .The brace had 4 bolts to remove.Other differences included that I had more electrical connectors to disconnect at the steering wheel. The main idea is that you going to drop the top steering wheel down so disconnect any wires that are hook up to it.
The bottom part of the steering wheel ( the electrical disconnects) was exactly the same as the video .
** The most difficult part for me was the ONE Back Bolt that hold the steering wheel in the slot. It was a bit hard to get to But it would not budge. I had to get out a long half inch breaker bar to bust in loose. Even with the half inch breaker bar it did not to come lose. Finally I was able to break it lose to unscrew. Don’t know if I could done it without have the breaker bar though..

Be aware that the steering wheel column is very heavy, clumsy and wobbly making it difficult to to lift and maneuver into position. Not to say it can't be done but it does take some time to do.

I guarantee you saved me 100s of dollars and days of no car for a 15.00 part (Oreillys). This is about the stupidest design I have ever seen. Why bury a part that is destined to fail so deeply in a steering column ? It truly makes you think the car makers are setting you up for a big expense. These cars are economical...bought mainly by folks who cant afford a porsche... and probably don't have hundreds of dollars to drop on a tough repair. I will be looking at your sight frequently . Once again thank you

Hands down the best video to watch for this project! I just replaced my coupler and I was able to do it by myself and it took a little over 3 hours. I successfully followed these instructions to replace this steering coupler in i30 GD 2012. It was righthand drive. In this case to get access to the kingpin bolt that holds the steering column in place the fuse box needs to be moved. Easy to do. 3 nuts. Then it looks really hard to reach but do not fear. With a socket extension you are able to reach it and also able to hold the socket ratchet head to make it easier to undo. Extension also needs to be used to get the bolt back in place. Fairly easy. You can just wobble the steering column to line up the hole and the tip of the bolt is tapered so it goes easily into the hole.

Excellent video. I appreciated all the detail. The only problem I had was putting the steering column back into place. If you can have someone hold the wheel while you are getting it back into the holder, it helps. Also, locking the wheel tilt control in place before you drop the column may help when lining up the two front column nuts.

Amazing work and thank you so much for the video! The steering feels a lot smoother and does not vibrate at high speeds.
Few suggestions for the people who’ll be working on the same model as mine 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS:
    1. The wire Harness shown in the video is for an Elantra GT which is much simpler. There are lot more wires to unclip so just keep an eye on the wiring harness layout. Keep in mind the steering column will drop so you don’t want any wires that might be damaged.
    2. Attaching the steering column back is a 2 person job. The assembly is heavy so unless you’re a professional mechanic or heavy lifter, take someone’s help. The big bolt attaching at the back is a real pain.
Overall it took me around 2 hours but it was totally worth it. I was quoted about $250 for the whole job and I did it in $7.
Can’t thank you enough for the video. Really motivating for amateurs who are trying to work on their cars.

Thank you so much for this video. I love your patient and encouraging manner when you describe step by step how to complete this repair. I successfully repaired my 2013 Hyundai Elantra using your instructions. The part cost me $13.99 at O'Reillys. I followed your instructions except my Elantra didn't have the mentioned air bag which actually made things easier. Getting the steering column back on was a little tricky as the steering wheel separated from the steering column. I probably could have avoided that by locking the steering tilt. I had to add a bit of extra time to ensure the steering wheel was calibrated correctly, meaning the wheel was straight when the car wheels were straight. Other than that the repair went smoothly and I am very appreciative. Thank you again.

I have a 2011 Elantra with the airbag not there instead there was a silver metal part with 5 bolts attaching it. Did you have this part? It’s not in the video. It’s got one bolt that’s different from the other 4 which I cannot get off. The other question is with placing the long bolt back into the steering column when putting back together. So many comments on steering says the steering is now off. Did you have any issues with it on the Elantra?

    • @m19710310
      @m19710310 3 роки тому +1

@@tree2paper Yes I had that silver part. 4 bolts and the 5th one is a nut if I remember correctly. "Cannot get it off" - what is the issue with that?
Alignment: BEFORE you are dropping the column, secure the steering wheel to the middle part with that lever that you use to set the height and angle of the steering wheel. Otherwise you will pull them apart and you will lose your alignment.

great video! thank you sir! I will add just one point.......to old guys like me with bad backs, the steering column can be a bear to get back in because of the weight and the cramped space. I used a small scissors jack to lift and hold the steering column while I maneuvered it into position. An extra set of hands would have been better, but oh well, it's all back together now. Thanks again for the excellent instructions!

Thanks so much for the great video. Really the most important part for me was the pep talk at the beginning and end! Putting the worry of the airbag aside was a big one also. One thing to mention is if you have a power seat move it all the way back BEFORE you disconnect the battery. I forgot and had to wait another 20 min after battery disconnect. The hardest part was getting the column back into place. Important tip of getting the back tab into the slot, then pivot it up and start one of the 12mm nuts on the stud, but doesn’t mean it’s easy. This was the hardest part, but doable and once held in place with one nut it was easy to start the 14mm horizontal bolt by wiggling the column. Getting the old coupler goo out took longer than I thought, even with the column dropped, access to it is not great, but got it done. Thanks again!

I will tell the honest truth. I did this job successfully with the help of this video. But it was a huge nightmare all because of the one bolt at the rear. It was hard enough to remove it but to put it back in without room to move or to even be able to see the hole then to get the bolt in the hole and then to thread the thing was a miracle. At one stage I thought I would have to get the car towed. Yes I did it and saved a lot of money but never again. I would recommend take it to a repair shop. It’s easy enough to drop the steering wheel and replace the perished rubber but that bolt at the rear is a serious nightmare. Maybe because my Hyundai is right hand drive it could of been harder I don’t know.

Amazing tutorial ! I've just done my right hand drive hyundai i40 as im in the UK. I used your video to do this. The only wires I had to disconnect ( for anyone doing a right hand drive ) were the 2 from the power steering motor and the airbag below the steering wheel and light headlight switch. All others to stalks were left plugged in. I did pull the thick loom from the fasteners. This allowed the column to be dropped and not stretch the loom. I didn't have to remove the fuse box. Managed to get the long bolt with a socket and a extender bar. My first attempt and took me around 2 hours. Just double check that you connect everything back up. The 2 to the motor, the airbag below the steering wheel and you shouldn't have any lights on dash. Drives lovely now.
