  • 92% of MLAs elected in the past 25 yrs were men - a recent analysis of the Election Commission data for 150 assembly polls across states and 6 Lok Sabha elections for women’s representation in politics has brought out some glaring inequalities.
For one of the most resilient parliamentary democracies in the world, with a female population of 662.9 million, India has only had a mere 1,584 women MLAs in the last 25 years, out of a huge 21,161 MPs in total. While women’s participation as voters has increased significantly over the years, the proportion of women representatives in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha continues to remain grossly low in comparison to their male counterparts.
In this FII Reports video, we look closely into women’s representation in politics and explore the barriers impeding their participation.

Lot more is needed. To start with India must short list constituencies to be reserved for women only, like we did in Municipal elections in many cities of India (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner etc). We must aim for 50 % women in parliament and make plans to achieve this target. This shall be the real empowement of women.

Maybe it require 0 brain cells to become a feminist , but but being a politician is a hard job and not everyone's cup of tea be a man or woman we should not pave flowers in there path just so there feet don't hurt . It is a tough job and only one who deserve should get it.

Women are politically unsafe unfortunate. Take the case of Nupur sharma, poor woman has been forced out of her party and mainstream. While Rehmani is free to move and safe.

Well, the biggest obstruction for women's partition in politics are women themselves, or more aptly their interests. Try to conduct a model parliament and see how many women come to participate, and then organize a fashion competition and see how many boys come, then think.
