@@ronseymour4976 An interesting statement about the person they are rather than the person they have invented. What was Jack, and what did he invent? A vet, a writer, broadcaster, reasonably successful soldier (Private to substantive major and acting Lieutenant-colonel) executive of Southern TV and finally TV presenter. Not a classic academic one, but a true polymath all the same.
It sounds like a programme that shouldnt work in theory, but it certainly does. Who wouldn't love to spend the day with Jack? The perfect dinner party guest. Only the British could come up with this type of show. ...amd nake it an absolute success.
Great story, thanks for posting. The old boy was flawed like the rest of us then? For all his skill it has to be remembered he was a media personality - an industry renowned for not being 'normal'. Not that I'm trying to get him off the hook but Jack was a fellow northerner and there's nothing we love more than a good bargain 😁
@ Nite Owl They say "Never meet your heroes" don't they? Slightly OT I knew of someone who worked with Hughie Green (Now there's a blast from the past!) He said he was an absolute twat, one of the nastiest men he had ever had the displeasure to work with.
@@Mackeson3 I worked as stage crew in the early 80s. The nicest people I worked with were Tina Turner and Madness. I cannot say the same for David E and Elkie B. (surnames removed).
Quiet but steely eyed old Jack. If this approach doesn't work........ Repeatedly attempting to nag someone into making a concession, being tightfisted and trying to cash in on his fame in such a negative manner. We all of us have feet of clay but even so.........ouch! These are truely horrible character defects!
A remarkable man, multi-talented and with a knack of explaining country things in a gentle, easy and entertaining manner. I loved his relaxed demeanor, puffing on his peaceful pipe.
Jack, Fred Dibnah, John Noakes… I’m no longer a kid, by a long chalk. I do hope kids have their equivalent of these guys now on TV and beyond. I suspect an in vain hope.
So much knowledge. Please show all episodes from his television programmes again. Old country, How, out of town. It would be leagues ahead of the stuff broadcast these days.
as a child i loved HOW on TV, especially JACK, he always came across as a person that was prepared to take time to explain things in detail. Miss his wisdom and knowledge.
I have fond memories of dad an I sitting down together and watching Jack. I learnt so much from him, and my dad. From shooting to fishing and all things nature wise. Salad days.
as a wee scots lad, now living in the south, soo privilidged to still see Fred on Meriden news.. but even more amazing that i watched HOW? the new series a couple of nights ago. 30 nov 2021 .. have to buy jack's books
A co-presenter with Jack Hargreaves- who was actually a programme controller on Southern Television was Oliver Kite. They presented Country Boy but Oliver had his own programme Kite's Country which I assume came via Jack's position on the TV station. As kids in Hampshire, we loved his show and were devastated when he died- TV presenters did not die- and I can remember discussing this sudden loss in the school playground- he had died while fishing. This is the only surviving edition of Kite's Country. ua-cam.com/video/AGe_y6511B4/v-deo.html
You were (and in your videos kindly restored to us by Dave Knowles still are) a great and a good man, Jack Hargreaves. an icvon of my childhood and early teens. Thank you. RIP.
He certainly outshone anyone else in this with his quality as a broadcaster and a spokesperson about a multitude of subjects ..they don’t make them like Jack any more 😞
Very important work this … thank you … thousands of forgotten skills and objects that took millennia to developed and learned and lost in two or three generations 😥
I wonder how he had time to make all those radio and TV programmes, he seemed to have wives, lovers and kids all over the place according to his wikipedia profile. Must have been all that fresh air stirring his loins.

He made a quality of programme we will never see again.
but how is still living .. its on tv, so is Fred Dineage. His daughter is my mp
I couldn't agree more. There are very few who come across as the person they are, rather than the person that they have invented.
Too right

A smiling Jack H.
My friend fitted Jack's AGA cooker. He said he was the meanest man he had ever met and wanted a big price reduction, because of who he was.

Southern Television was a superb franchise with quality programming. It was a scandal when it lost the franchise for Southern England in 1981.
So much knowledge. Please show all episodes from his television programmes again. Old country, How, out of town. It would be leagues ahead of the stuff broadcast these days.
I could listen to Jack all day, you can pick up his cheeky humor when people ask questions, such a humble and honest man, a sad loss.
sadly they have not found a replacement for jack yet ,but there are many of us out here that share his knowledge and practice it.
Majesty & kindness combined - Jack is my hero.
He was what tv should be about, telling us about how wonderful things were and people who used to live in the country side.
Jack, a national treasure.
The Gentleman Country Man
Jack left the army with the rank of Major, after serving on Field Marshall Montgomery's staff!
Wow never new that I used to sell him ferrets nice man rip
A remarkable man. His Wikipedia page tells you things you would and could not have guessed.
nowadays there is only crap on tv
as a child i loved HOW on TV, especially JACK, he always came across as a person that was prepared to take time to explain things in detail. Miss his wisdom and knowledge.
God be with the days of simplicity
Watching Jack on TV year's ago inspired my lifetime love for fishing and the countryside
Same here David. All the best.
A man outstanding in his field - the first !

My god the bbc is so up itself, isn't it?
You could say that but it's generally accepted that there was none more up themselves than Southern TV. Proof? It's why they lost their franchise.
Book is still available on Amazon - just bought a copy :) Need some relaxing reading.
I worked on his house in belchelwell Dorset..he had a pipe in every room ...
Love Jack Hargreaves. Great man
Glad Jack kept away from the BBC
@Metal Man - definitely 👍
It's uncanny the extraordinarily gigantic knowledge his head held, even when it was his subject.
A wonderfully knowlegable man, a one off, never equalled.
Top educator
He was in a mood,he did make video recordings & there are over 60 of them on dvd!
SHAME THE INTERVIEW WAS CUT SHORT!!
It sure is a shame!
I liked the way he sometimes made mistakes just as in normal conversation

Thank you
yes i used to watch these programs as jack and olly were my heros at the time.
Great video, thanks. The closing music from the Killing Fields was "Imagine" by John Lennon.
Very clever man
Can you please make comments accepted on the Brian Pummer documentaries?
Such a shame about the abrupt ending.
I know what you mean. My thoughts exactly when I found my old VHS tape and watched it back. Any amount of Jack is a bonus though. All the best.
And we didn't get to find out what those two objects were either!! ☹
Remember watching him as a very young kid, in the early eighties. Very educational and so interesting, nothing will be like it again
All I remember was his program was on before Thunderbirds " ffs get this s hit off'

How, with Fred from ITV Sport, when there was just 3 channels
Very important work this … thank you … thousands of forgotten skills and objects that took millennia to developed and learned and lost in two or three generations 😥
im still alive and remember these programs well.
I’ve subbed your channel. I want to watch all your programs. ❤️
Have a look at this channel on UA-cam. Dave Knowles - filmmaker

True but in the world of media personalities its all completely normal stuff I'd say?
Brings back fond family memories
Loved Jack from when I was young and still do.
come back jack because we need to know how to change a light bulb because most of us have not been educated enough to know how
Thank you

Good ol' Jack.
Quite a lady's man

Bunty James I believe that was her name, was part of the team.😊
Is that the mellifluous Susan Rae?
No, thats Jack Hargreaves ;)
Dunno. But, wasn't she lovely?
Why on earth would you use a Spanish tune to introduce an English rural broadcast?
