My guitar journey can be summed up as:
Early teens - Loving the shit out of Kirk and Metallica
Mid to late teens - laughing at Kirk while comparing him to more technically gifted players
20s - Diving so hard into virtuosos and obscure shredders
(Current) Late 20s - Getting tired of caring so hard and loving how chill Kirk is. Loving Metallica and classics again because it's fun.
hell, I even want an old ESP KH model now.
I've been down the rabbit hole too. Still like those obscure virtuosos and shredders but I've been back to laid back melodic solos. To my taste the perfect balance are still Friedman, Scolnick and Oliva or others similar.
Are you me? This is seriously how I view kirk haha

In reality, Kirk isn't the best when it comes to technique, yes, he probs has gotten lazy, but I still feel a shit ton of this hate is just dumb. The dude did more than some of us will ever achieve, wrote sick solos and has a legacy that would be hardly matched.

@@metalgamer9647 and being good doesnt always make you successful
@@waynemetallum7623 Yeah unfortunately. Lots of bands that were better in every sense than Metallica didn't get the attention they deserve.
@@metalgamer9647 Because they suck in songwriting, they have no talent just technique pfft
Kirk is a non-guitar player’s guitar player. Guthrie is a guitar player’s guitar player. This is the best way I can understand this phenomenon.
That makes sense to me also.
That’s a really good way to explain it honestly, that can apply to a ton of other musicians as well.
facts but as a guitar player i still love him
Well said. This is also why many white folks love bands with bad “indie rock” vocalists. It’s music in their vocal range that they can sing along to.
As a guitar player, I still look up to him
I think Kirk brings some energy and experimentation to the band. Yes, I've seen him hitting wrong notes and missing notes on crucial parts of solos. Yes, sometimes this experimentation seems more like stochastic hand motion. But this energy has been stapled in Metallica's sound since ever. That's more success than whatever everyone here has had, musically. Skill, does not equal to success. I think this is what is really behind people's motivation to hating on Kirk. It's a constant reminder that, no matter how much they work and play and evolve and learn, they will never achieve a portion of that success. It's a constant reminder that the world is not "fair" in regards to the amount of work you put in. I think that's what really drives that hate.
What it boils down to is that you need the songs to be successful and that’s what Kirk has
"you don't need skills to be successful" is sad but true and I think that many would agree his solos tho not technically skillful were still amazing to listen to back in those days. and I don't think metallica wouldn't have come this far without this man.
@@prabhatpahari2314 sad but true!! Haha I see what you did there lol. I agree with you that Kirk is an essential part of Metallica and I love listening to his solos. I’m not a skilled enough guitar player to critique Kirk in any way. The whole band rules!
Self soothing mind Olympics right there
@@H.E.M. Its interesting that Bob Rock copped so much flack for 'turning' Metallica from a metal band into a hard rock band but he did do right by pushing Kirk with his solo's and not putting up with any shit until he nailed a decent solo. I think the issue is that Kirk has such a laid back attitude to life and as such he really needs someone to push/prod/hound him into creating killer solo's again because its quite obviously he doesn't have that 'inner-perfectionist' - like James does - to do it himself.
I honestly have a love/hate relationship with Kirk. So many of his solos just sound awkward to me, but when he hits a good solo, it's absolutely mind-blowing. The solo from Ride the Lightning is one of my favourites of all time. I just wish he had more stuff where he wasn't just mindlessly spamming pentatonic runs and abusing wah
Everyone who came last in they Olympics also had a few far and between good moments.

I think stevie t is more of the filthy frank one for guitarist, weird/goofy but very talented at what they do and what makes them similar to me is the hate comments ive seen a lot that says for both ff and stevie t for ex. I don’t care, Kirk is and always will be king. The music/solos he wrote are top tier legendary.
i lovd kirk but james has better melodic phrasing in his solos. james is king.
No, fuck them both! Lars is the king of the king
Ride the Lightning has some of the best lead tracks in my opinion. Kirk's melodic shred is where his strength lies. Songs like Fade to Black, Ride the Lightning, and Creeping Death, are some of the best fast melodic solos I've heard from a dude who's considered a thrash guitarist. He does the thrashy stuff pretty good though when he puts the fast stuff together with the melody.
If you ask me, any Kirk solo off MOP is a step down from RTL and AJFA was technical and fun but in my opinion Kirk never really captured that magic again like he did for me in RTL.
I mean, mustaine wrote a lot of the songs on Ride the Lightning.
@@jordanlutz8307 only Ride The Lightning, Cthulu and MAYBE parts of Trapped Under Ice
The bass on that album is some of if not the greatest bass playing one album can hold. Cliff Burton just shredded through the entire album doing his own thing. Its like one big bass solo from start to finish. Alot of people dont even realize its a bass being played they think its guitar solos. Master of puppets album too bass on it is insane
The solo for ride the lighting is god tier for me. I feel like a lot of bands like A7X legit took inspiration from that one song.
@@jordanlutz8307Dave had 3 riffs on that album lmfao. Wdym Dave wrote the album ?
I can see why someone would get over Kirk's playing after a while but let's be honest - he's a better guitarist than James is a singer and a better guitarist than Lars is a drummer. He definitely peaked early in his career but in order to keep improving and growing, he likely would have either outgrown Metallica.....or not been a good fit for their sound. So instead, he decided to do the job he had, tour the world and make millions. I can't blame him even a little.
Put in that perspective, you're absolutely right - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Had he changed careers from being the silent speaker who just keep being the lead guitarist of Metallica and "moved on to something else" at some point he would 've likely just become "the guy who used to play guitar for Metallica". His riches would be a thing of the past & his fame would have faded & highlighted on an episode of VH1's "Where Are They Now". That he would be watching from a 2nd floor apartment after getting home from work at a factory, wishing he never got inspired to quit Metallica to reach "new horizons". Full of regret is what he would be now, had he done something like that. He's made the right choices. Still ungodly rich, still famous, still touring the world in style - still just the silent speaker who plays lead guitar for Metallica. Oh, and regardless of the opinions of anyone in this thread or any where else, no matter where anyone rates his guitar playing or career, he is STILL sought after, a huge inspiration to guitar players everywhere & envied by millions. He's got nothing to be ashamed of & surely should be quite happy with himself and where he is today. I would be. And I wouldn't give 2 shits what everyone else had to say about it. You go Kirk! Keep being you!
@@m.c.ruckus2032 I thought you were talking about Jason Newstead for a minute there...
@@mikenodine6713 Haha! That perfect example was right there in front of me as I typed that comment, yet I hadn't thought of it, thank-you. That is as close to proving my point as anything. I'm now anticipating a "Where Are They Now" episode focusing on Jason Newstead's current career & lifestyle. I bet it wouldn't be too terribly different than the one I described for Kirk, had he decided to leave the band years ago. As for Jason, well he tried to fix what wasn't necessarily broken, just needed some maintenance issues to be addressed. Now, it's irreversibly destroyed. Kirk keeps the results of Jason's choices in check, I'm sure...
@@m.c.ruckus2032 Even James and Lars admitted years ago that they never really accepted Jason as an equal. I think that is understandable because Cliff was there struggling with them in the early days when they were little more than a garage band and I'm sure they still grieve for Cliff. But how much crap can you take? I think Jason had enough of being treated as a second class bandmate. But bassists, no matter how great, don't usually lead bands. I mean let's face it, even Michael Antony didn't get the respect from Eddie and Alex that he deserved. So I would conclude that Cliff would rather go along to get along and is doing it for money. Which would explain why he doesn't have the same level of FIRE in his creativity and playing that he did all those years ago. People forget that in the 80's, Metallica was groundbreaking in gaining commercial success in the genre that they basically created. Back then, NO ONE sounded like Kirk. Nowadays, everyone sounds like Kirk. And I think it's a little unfair to judge an artist DECADES past their prime. In his day, Kirk was highly ranked among his contemporaries. But time has moved on. Even so, the fact that Kirk is still being discussed is proof he is still relevant even today.
mustaine isn't also the cleanest player
agreed
no but at least he's creative.
Nah, but Marty Friedman is goated
I mean every single one of Dave Mustaine's solo was basically some fast HOn/Poff pentatonic lick for like 30 seconds straight, I love Megadeth but we gotta call a spade a spade.
I love mustaine definitely top5 for me but he is mostly doing his best Michael schenker covers when he solos 😂😂😂
That's why Dave has lead guitarists for Megadeth who are more eclectic
i love kirk so much and he and james were my inspiration to pick up the guitar in the first place. it makes me sad to see how much people hate someone i really genuinely idolize, i didn’t know this whole hate community existed for him😭😭
I was actually on Omegle while he was making this video, and accidentally ran across him. I felt my existence leave my body for a second.
As a guitar player for years, when you break it down and get technical about it I certainly understand experienced guitar players argument. But a problem I have found in myself while writing music is that I get way too immersed on technicalities and not about what just sounds good. Cuz ultimately man ain't that what it all comes down to? Anyways that's something I've noticed in myself the last couple years so thought I would mention that side of it. Thank you for the content my friend.

I love Kirk because he creates phenomenal and timeless solos on Metallica. I also agree that Kirk is not a technical guitar god. However, Kirk's simple character fits perfectly in Metallica, which is melodic and on point. Metallica doesn't fit into anything convoluted. This EP work shows Kirk's creative ability in composing.

Musicians often do this thing where they decide they’re the gatekeepers of the sanctity of music, and part of that role is creating lists that consist of the musicians who are worthy of respect.
Nobody cares what your list is. Nobody. It doesn’t mean anything. I think Joe Satriani is a way better player than maybe every lead guitarist in any famous rock or metal band. But I like a lot of those bands’ music more than I like Satriani’s music. Being a good musician doesn’t make one’s music good. I’d rather listen to paint dry than listen to a Jacob Collier album. He’s got perfect pitch, can change keys microtonally, can do a quadruple polyrhythm by tapping his fingers on a table, and is a super expert of harmony. Doesn’t make a difference. That’s not what makes music good.
Maybe Satriani’s or Jacob’s music is meaningful to someone else, and that’s fine, too.

Fuck anyone who hates on Kirk. His techniques are not too advanced, but his tone and old passion back then make him special. Not to mention how kind and sweet he is. He is no Van Halen. But I think he definitely shaped the way for thrash metal.

If you and your band can write songs that masses love so much and you and your band can perform it pretty well, in this genre its more important than being a perfectionist performer. I think the hate against Kirk is driven by envy and the shit social media and doesn't really exist. I never heard anybody hate Kirk but today every nobody can run a youtube channel and write clickbait titles that fuck with a well known artist just to steal some fame from him.

Hey man just some raw input here. If you had someone somewhat professional helping you out on your channel with editing and content, someone that can give you objective opinions and kind of reel you in a little bit while also letting you be a bit of a wild card, your channel would explode. You're pretty much right there on the cusp, but you need to get someone to polish it up some. Luckily I didn't though because overall I did enjoy it, which explains the amount of subs you have already. I just think you could have 10 times as much.
Tge shortest straw solo is severely underrated. Kirk is fantastic
Kirk used to write very compelling, emotional solos and he was pretty creative. Nowadays he is still creative I guess, but the fire is gone. He also hasn't really evolved his sound since the early 90s

Loved his playing on kill ‘em all
Part 4 of the video spoke to me on a spiritual level
Kirk is definitely one of my favorite guitar players. I understand that there are, or were more technically skilled players out there, but that's OK. One of the reasons I like Kirk is because he has never presented himself as anything more than just a guy that plays guitar. Even though he is the guitar player for one of the most successful, world famous bands in music history. He has always just been a kinda dorky guy that loves playing guitar. From what I can tell from the many many many interviews and behind the scenes videos, he seems to be a chill laid back guy who would be fun to hang out with and have some laughs with. I don't care what anybody says, nobody who actually knows how to play guitar can say that he sucks at playing, with any kind of genuine honesty. Like I said, he might not be the best player to ever play, but he is most definitely nowhere near the worst.
Thank you

Ah, a well-needed gush of fresh air in my recommendations.
As the cycle often goes, there comes a point in a guitar players life when they finally realize playing guitar isn’t a sport and that music is an art. That’s when you listen back to Metallica again and realize the genius of the arrangements of the songs and that the solos usually compliment the energy of the song, even if they’re not as difficult as Steve Vai, Yngwie, etc. That’s when you actually start enjoying music again. Unfortunately, some guitarists never reach this point. They stay stuck in the stage of only listening to bad, difficult to play guitar music unironically just because they like how hard it is to play and anything that’s more simple “sucks”. Learning hard to play songs is fun, but most people would agree something has been lost along the way if that doesn’t eventually translate into having a taste for all good music and enjoying the art, whether it’s hard or easy to play. You can also start enjoying genres like electronic music, Brit pop, new wave, alternative, and punk again, genres that have amazing music but guitar wise are not so technical. That’s not everyone’s experience but I see and hear it so much.
I mean he had a few great solos like i really like the intro solo to welcome home sanitarium and while battery sucks pretty bad the main melodic motiv sounds really good
