The Making of the Alien Egg Costume

- I made this Alien egg costume pacifically for Dragon Con. I've been hearing stories about Dragon Con for years. How it's such a great party con and that everyone brings there A game costumes.
I wanted to do something classic and different and still be able to move around and drink.
I have told some close friends about it making it and they said this costume is perfect for Dragon Con.
Sorry this wasn't a tutorial video. It's more of a behind the secnes.

In May of 1979 I drove two and a half hours one way so I could watch Alien in 70 mm with Dolby stereo sound. It did not disappoint. The theater was less than half full (the movie was new and word had not spread yet) I sat towards the back and I will never forget watching all the people in front of me jump up when the face-hugger jumped out of the egg and got John Hurt. I was an avid reader of Starlog and knew what was coming. Still it was cool to see the audience reaction.
Yes, I had the same memories of that. I bought the comic book of the movie before i saw it and still scared the carp out of me.
I just realized that your wearing Alien clothes. Brett's hat and jacket. Did you make them too, or is that an original Thinking Cap co. cap. I ordered mine from an ad in Starlog. I wore it so much I practically wore it out. I used to wear it to bars and people would ask me if I was on a ship. Almost no one knew what it meant.
Ha ha, love this, any chance of doing a full tutorial in the future, Ted ?
The gag behind this is awesome. I also love the fact that you dedicated yourself to that and had to make a second hand. Dang!
Thank you. So mad that the first one didn't work, I had no choice but to remake it.
when i as kid i saw aliens as my first movie ever scared me to never get ou of the car on a long and dark roads with nothing around. Man i love that movie !!

I saw you live at Dragon Con (didn't realise who it was at the time - I guess I don't watch your channel quite regularly enough yet). Definitely one of the most memorable & clever costumes this year!

Hey Ted. Since you worked on Guyver, do you have any plans on making a tutorial on the costume or just the helmet? That'd be amazing and a blast from the past, I imagine! Great work as always!
got me good there on the first one haha, though I think it could have used a little tint on the fake hand because it stands out a little too much with your other hand right next to it
No one ever notice at Dragon Con. Scared them ever time.
Damn that's fucking awesome
Did I getcha?
Evil Ted Smith nearly haha
Wish this video had come 2 weeks ago, when I was going to cut the fleece for my totoro costume (0:59) ended up I just used 3 throws and invisible threaded them together.
Great work as usual, truely amazing. What did you use for the half peeled away skin on the exterior? Its a nice netting effect. It really sells the overall organic look.
Evil Ted on the down low. Ain't that the truth.
I did not expect that, now that's timeing, timming, timyiening? Ok, I don't know how to spell timing.
Thats so bad ass 👍👍
Thanks.

Hey Ted! Long time fan/subscriber. Have watched so many of your videos! I’m sure you get requests often but I was wondering if you would be interested in ideas to make like some kind of movie or cartoon prop like your alien egg but something a person could make and use as a display item. Random examples would be like the demon chest from the 13 ghosts of scooby doo, a gremlin egg, one of predator’s weapons like the disc or spear, the looper hand cannon, wearables might be like the Kergan’s skull Helmet from Highlander? Thanks! :)
The effect is amazing, even when you see it coming from a mile away it still works just as well.
Love the texture on the outside, looks totally slimey and gross, just like it should :) Did you add some kind of fabric or is it thin foam forming the outside surface?
Yes you can see it in the video.
do you still have the patterns for the egg. will you be selling them?
Stay away! I don't want have an alien burst out of my chest!😰😱
Ha ha no worries.
That's amazing! My girlfriend totally wants one. What was that webbing you used as a hinge again?

Hey Ted (or anyone who knows), I was painting gold onto dark grey Eva foam. I found that the yellow wasn't coming out and you could barely see it, any way to not have to apply 7 coats? xD
When painting with yellow. Your base coat should be white. Yellow is a thin color and it hard to paint on a dark base.
Hey Ted, did you heatform the egg pieces before you glued it?
Yes, I did.
Any chance to get measurements of those foam parts seen in 1:08 of your excellent video?
You mean the egg pattern?
@@EvilTedSmith Yep!
You mention you wrapped this egg in 1/16th upholstery foam, was this something you were able to find easily as raw material? I've been looking for this sort of thin upholstery foam myself but cannot source any anywhere.
