Holy MOLY. I think I finally figured out how to do my costume. I have a 1/6 action figure that's very detailed and every piece of armor can come off. When watching this video a light bulb went off in my head. What if I put the aluminum foil and duct tape over the toys pieces of armor, and then take those mini template pieces and buy a overhead projector and do what is basically done in the video. This might work.
I love your tutorials! Always clear, concise, and with amazing tips! And a great collab with the amazing and talented Holly!! I hope this tip can help some people too. Projectors can skew images so the top is bigger than the bottom. If this concerns you, add a grid to the background and check that the squares in each corner of the image are the same size and square on the projected image. If they aren't you can try moving the projector up or down, changing the angle, or adjusting the keystone setting for computer projectors. Most libraries or schools, at least where I'm from, will let you use a projector, or even a computer projector, for free.
You know when you have those little eureka moments and just suddenly understand something? I had one at 2:19. Just that one little motion made me think about patterning in a new way! Thanks Ted.
Watching this get made was just as, if not more, amazing as watching the final product in a action. I have a soft spot for "prototype-y" looking things, so I loved seeing the assembled form with all the measurements and the labeling. That just about made my day. Thank you Evil Ted.
Evil Ted Smith Well Holly is lucky to have your help. I'm definitely going to look at your other videos. It's really interesting, even if I'm personally horrible at this craft.
Holly if you ever get this or read this, I do not want to take your time or be a bother, but it would mean the world to me if you read this or comment to this! It would blow my mind! So hey! I am a 13 year old boy who is an aspiring cosplay artist. The only experience I've had with cosplay is your videos and a Finn costume I have. Feeling lonely, I know it's strange that a boy out of today's generic generation of early teens would dream of cosplaying, and I'm okay with that. But my problem is money, time, and skill. I live in Washington so buying tickets to cons would be rough for me, I have little to no experience with tools and costume making, and my working spaces are tiny and cluttered. Do you have any tips on what I can do to pick up my act and begin a hopeful living dream of cosplaying? Again, if you even read this, I would jump through the roof! Thank you for all your videos too!
This is awesome!!! So many great tips and tricks. Even something as simple as folding back the parts when you’re spray glueing a deep V. Awesome. I usually have a general idea of how to make stuff, but these were all new for me. Thank you!!!
wow, i'm glad i found this again. i had my laptop lost and saved this tutorial on it. now i found it after hours of searching again. hope i can now make a baymax costume with the help of this video. so fucking awesome, thank you very much.
ever since i met you and holly in little tokyo a fews months back and you showed me your channel, ive been going crazy with eva foam creations! its so versatile. thanks for posting these videos! hope to see you at a con soon!
+Evil Ted Smith Thanks for replying Ted! She seems like such a sweet and lovely person. I admire both you and her, and always look forward to seeing more cosplay from you both in the future!
Wonderful, fantastic!! I’ve been absolutely fixated on fabricating a specific Halloween costume and this gives me an idea of where I might be able to start the process for the body piece. It’s all very fun and informative - thanks so much for sharing this!
What a wonderful collab you did with Holly, I was kind of shocked that it is, indeed, Commander Holly! Your tutorials are always great, I can't believe I waited so long to Subscribe, I've watched your videos so much. Can't wait to see more, you're definitely inspiring!
Using a projector is so obvious but so clever, I would have never thought about it xD Thank you for all the things you are teaching, your channel and your work goes to show, that simple is still best :D
I recently used this technique to pattern a mascot head for the Animal Crossing Villager. I used a polystyrene ball and used model magic to get the jawline shape I wanted. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I've subscribed :D
I love your videos they are so helpful and really do cover the basics. I would love to see your take on different kinds of cosplay weapons like guns, swords, hammers etc.
Quin Moriarty I don't know if this will be helpful now but you can get cheap shoes at Payless or a thrift shop and just build on top of those, gluing the foam and/or fabric right on top!
+Evil Ted Smith I have been planning on making the torso (body) of Goliath from evolve with out the head arms and crouch part of it and I was wondering if I can use the same method of making it:)
Found your channel through Holly and I'm really digging it. :) I hope to learn stuff like this and work on cosplays in the future. I'm currently a broke 20 year old in college studying film and broadcasting, but I've decided this summer to start honing in and learning how to make props and dolls and such with the little money I have lol. Dreams are expensive but worth it. Hopefully soon I'll have my own channel. :) Thanks for the tutorials and inspiration.
This is an awesome idea! How well would this technique work on an intricate shape for a costume? I'm trying to find new ways to pattern the pieces of a completely foam costume, and I think making a miniature out of modeling clay would work for me.
Need to make a similar shape for a costume so this video is super helpful in figuring out how to go about it, did have a quick question though. In the video there are 3 template pieces that are cut out to be the stencil, but it looked like there was more than 3 pieces of foam in the assembly phase. How many pieces of foam were used to re-create the bean? Having trouble visualizing how it all came together.
Even though i didn't do your project, i still understand this video! At 7:33 i dident understand at first. But then when i watch 9:16 I NOW UNDERSTAND! And the final clip of you guys putting in to like a weird shape that i dont know but thank you your the best!( ≧∀≦)ノ

Well Holly is lucky to have your help. I'm definitely going to look at your other videos. It's really interesting, even if I'm personally horrible at this craft.
It's just understanding it. How it's made. Once you start you'll find that you can do it.
Evil Ted Smith
I believe you, it might just take some trial and error, that's it. Thanks for the encouraging words.
Ted has taught me everything I know about foam fabrication, also he's awesome! Give him a sub!

Fantastic! I see there were 3 haters here before me. This is fantastic work!
this will come in handy if i ever build a Gigantor cosplay!
Happy it helps!
Would you be open to creating a tutorial for wearable cosplay armour boots? It would be extreamly helpful before next con season!

Oooh! Can I use this to make a cactuar costume?
Can you do more armor? Like female armor, that doesn't really hug the body so much. Maybe knight armor or something like that
Alexandra Sherman You can adapt any of my tutorials to fit your own personal tastes and needs. Good luck, and thanks for subscribing.
I could follow this tutorial exactly and make a costume of the Fall Guys character; that'd be really cool for halloween!
Genius simplicity. Another great tutorial ... did Commander Holly ever finish the outfit? (saw her blathers, so this one has to be great)
jrdnswyr Go check out her site. She'll post it when it's done. Thanks for watching.

Great now I'm thinking about making a viagra pill costume
Is that what shape they are?

+Jasmine Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing.
This forever really help any generation
Thank you. I think so too.
I was wondering if this technique would work on a finer detail model. There are miniature models to scale of the costume I want to make, would the foil and duct tape method work for decently small forms?
Keep up the videos, they're pretty darn awesome!
Sure, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Great video, thank you for making it!
Thank you for watching it.
I know this is an older video and I don’t know if anybody will ever see my question, but I’m wondering why was one pattern piece was cut in half? While the other one remained whole? Great video!
I did that because, it was part of the shape of the form we were making in the pattern.
Can something like this made out of soft foam (like this or thinner) be squished down to fit in a car? Will it recover its shape?
I’m making Moon from line town for the foam party and I need a pattern for just the head
I'd love to see the rest of the process! Looks like it would be pretty cool. Specifically, I'd like to know how you'd do the eye hole(s).
Also, just want to give the obligitory shoutout to the Game Grumps; Ross is the reason why I stumbled upon your chanel.
Chris Stepp Holly will be posting videos of her costume when it's done.
Hey ted, please, could you do a tutorial on how to make a chainmail ? i need it for cosplay but the real chainmails are too expensive
DarkCry You can't foam fabricate chain mail.
Ted, these are absolutely fantastic videos. You may have said so in the video, but I missed it: what type of spay adhesive is that? It acts like contact cement, but you sprayed it. Again, sorry if you've covered this. Fantastic videos, by the way. Thank you for your content.
StorytimeFX It's like 3M Spray 90.
How do you decide where to draw the cutting lines? Is there any rule or you just follow your instinct?
I have a few questions. What's an alternate technique we can use if we don't have a projector to help us transform the miniature suit pattern to a life size pattern? Also what type of form did you use for the final product of the suit?
+Xaku Xaku Otaku You can go to a copy place and have them blown up.
Hiiii Thank youuu this is a big helppp! can you help me get the pattern for bontakun?
Is there any way to do this without a projector?
Can you texture that kind of foam? I was thinking of making a Rayburn Jr costume for my nieces bday
I have my supply list just below the video.
Great tutorial!! Is there a way to work out the size desired without a projector from the small pattern?
+Silv Candy You can go to a copy store and they could blow it up for you.
O_O Thank you for posting this haha I've been dying with my patterns!

would you suggest this method to make a Bowser shell or would you suggest another way?
Can you please show us cosplayers the pattern you gave holly for the circle pattern for blathers
maxander hebert It'll be in my pattern store when my website is up and running. Soon.
Would this work for the shaping of a pair of Obelix Trousers? It's the making it fit to a person who isn't especially round that makes this seem daunting.
Is she strapped into it with a backpack or does it just kind of rest on her shoulders or so?
I believe that it just sat on her shoulders, because it was just foam.
wow that is an amazing idea!!!
+TastyCinnamonrolls Thank you for subscribing.
You should do a big pattern with out a projector, cause not that many people have over head projectors laying around the house or shop.
syberninja976 Some things you just can't do, sorry.
syberninja976 The 'easy' way is to scale the pattern in an art program and print it. I use quotes because have fun figuring out what goes where and how not to die taping everything together.
