random thing that pleases me a lot about the book leo videos: the choice of keeping a small cover of the book up the screen the whole time she's talking about it
IN DEFENSE OF White Nights: I don't know who recommended it to you as the "greatest love story" but this doesn't make ANY sense to me. This is one of my FAVORITE books, like TOP 3, and I would never call it a great love story, or even a love story. The whole essence of the book (imo) is the characterization of the hopeless dreamer who only romanticizes life and fantasizes instead of actually LIVING LIFE, and this book portrays it beuatifully but also shows you how that turns out. It's almost a cautionary tale. I find it really really beautiful but also gut wrenching if you end up relating to the protagonist.
The Familiar was one of my faves this past month, actually. I'm so burned out on romantasy, that I enjoyed the setting and a lot of other societal issues taking the forefront, while the romance was there, but didn't dominate the whole plot, and Luzia and Santangel both had their own conflicts independent of each other that they were able to come together and solve.
on white nights (spoilers!!): i think that it’s important for you to be able to relate to the main character a little bit in order for it to become special which isn’t necessarily something anyone can do. it’s about a man who had nothing but his wild imagination and suddenly experience something he could barely touch on in his dreams which is essentially real love. the fact that he, for the first time is able to open up to someone who is willing to understand his situation gives him hope (because what can you do as a dreamer if not secretly hope) so this situation turned his entire life around - he went from having nothing to having basically everything. all this only for it to be taken away again after just a few days which is what makes this story so incredibly tragic.
sorry i’m really rambling here but i just wanted to elaborate on the having to relate to the main character aspect! essentially, it is especially hard to come to terms with when you (being a dreamer yourself) put yourself in his shoes, knowing that you could potentially experience this as well. what the story ends with is him reflecting that it was basically only for a second and yet it was enough - he lost everything but he did get to have it for a moment and he is ‘happy’ with that. the dreamer remains a dreamer, all the stories he imagined about him and nastenka building a life together will stay just that - a dream
I haven't read 'Emily Wilde's Enciclopedia', so I can't compare them directly, but in case you were intrigued by the woman-fantasy-scholar setup, I can really recommend the 'The Memoirs of Lady Trent' series, which I enjoyed immensely. :D The MC is a dragon scholar and travels the world for her studies. :)
I finished "The picture of Dorian Gray" half an hour ago and it's definitely one of my favorite books. There's just so much to analyze and it's so phylosophical. I feel like I am going to think about it for a while. Also I like how basically the entire plot can be summorized like this (slight spoilers ahead): Henry wants to meet Basil's friend Dorian but Basil says no because he's the gay mom friend who doesn't want his crush to get ruined by YOLO-Harry. Harry doesn't care and meets Dorian anyway and proceeds to give him body dysmorphia and gerentophobia within one afternoon which causes Dorian to develop a hate-love-relationship with a painting. It's just so beautiful.
For OP: I don't know which version you read, the standard 'novel' published in 1891, or the one published by Lipincotts Magazine in 1890. Or even the original manuscript. But I strongly urge you to read at least 2 of them: the final version from 1891 and the manuscript from 1890 that is a little bit more gay 😅
I've heard about Emily Wild from almost every booktuber I follow but your description is the one that finally pushed me to make a decision and add it to my tbr. Also I need to look for Perfume in my library, I've been meaning to read it for literal years! 📚
The movie Perfume is also very very good. I haven't read the book but it's been years since I've seen it and damn it's still stuck in my mind in far too many details.
Personally, I HATED Emily Wild’s but to be fair I don’t like a lot of booktuber darlings. I’m kinda unromantic and I don’t like YA though so there’s that. I did LOVE a Dowry of Blood though, and I hate Sally Rooney so me and Leonie aren’t in super agreement on everything lol
Finally someone talking about my babygirl Constanta ! I LOVED a Dowry of Blood, it really immersed me. I agree I would have liked it to be slightly longer, but the discourse about love and abuse still did it for me.
I love the way you describe books, you don’t really just go over the synopsis and tell use whether you liked it or not. You really paint a picture of what the book is like and what kind of reader would appreciate it. I’ve heard the synopsis for A Dowry of Blood 100 times but never had any interest in reading it, but the fact that you were the first person who actually described what this book is actually like (written in letter format, it’s about obsession, it’s not an epic story, it’s atmospheric) made me realize this actually is something i would enjoy!!
Honestly I have to say I enjoy you videos so so much! They just always have such a cozy vibe and I enjoy listening to your voice. I really like that you give your honest review and always stay true to yourself. It is really refreshing in this world of social media being always somewhat crafted and fake. It just gives me the feeling of talking to a friend about books! So thank you for your videos ❤
I love rainy weather in May and the summer months ❤ Of course not all the time haha, I also love sunny days in spring and summer. But there's just something different about rainy weather during these months, with all the green plantlife
Just a thing that happened to me yesterday about that overconfident thing you were talking about. I got a letter grade taken off one of my papers for my masters in mental health counseling because I was “over confident”. It was a journal paper over how I feel about delivering assessment results to clients and I felt that I had done well in that in a previous course so I said I had no “concerns”. My professor said it wasn’t okay and that over confidence causes small errors….it honestly blew my mind. Especially since the rubric was informal and just doing a vibe check about the final project. Like I get that sentiment but all I said was that I felt comfortable talking to clients about assessments. Just another example of a society telling me not to be confident in my competency….
When Leonie said she thinks she interprets it the wrong way I remembered a teacher who told us in class that there’s no wrong may to interpret and how much she loves hearing different interpretations … yeah just five minutes later I gave her mine interpretation of a poem and she said I’m interpreting it wrong 🙃
Ooh chaos theory! As a physics undergrad, love that ❤ It is hard tho. But a very beautiful area of physics. If you want to learn more about chaos, I recommend trying to look for chaos in biology instead, as you're more familiar with biology from your grade if I remember correctly? There's chaos (and complex systems) in for example in how the patterns of shells or zebras or giraffe happen. There's probably a lot of it in neuroscience too. (I mean, our current ai models is basically neuroscience simplified.) There's also the patterns of monkey movements, bird murmurations and how populations of animals grow or not in the prescence of other external factors or predators. I honestly don't know any introductory books but chaos and complex systems are a relatively new field of study, at least outside of its pure mathematical form, so there's not a lot out info there 😅
Chaos theory is really difficult to get without knowing dynamical systems. For an exam, I had to build Chua’s circuit which is chaotic and it was a mess. My prototype never actually worked out of simulations 😥
I felt the same way about The Familiar! I had really high expectations but had a hard time connecting and actually caring about the chracters. Loved Emily's Encyclopedia of Faeries too! you should read the second book :)
Glad I’m not the only one that was disappointed in a Dowry of Blood. I felt like there could’ve been so much more to it, and I was hoping it would’ve been a favorite as well but really disappointed me instead. I felt like it never went beyond what the synopsis told us in terms of emotional depth
It's winter in Brazil now, and in my city, it's been really cold and raining all night. Perfect weather for reading vampire books and having a coffee. I'd love to have a Notion or a spreadsheet, but I have more than 900 books on my TBR list - it would take all year just to organize it. I feel stuck with Goodreads :( Perfume has been on my list for at least five years, and this video made me want to finally read it. Last but not least: your hair looks amazing, the short cut suits you really well.
A few days ago, I finished *The Gilded Wolves* trilogy thanks to your recommendation Leonie, and I loved it ! It's my favorite read of this year so far.
A separate thank you for the notion template! I've been recently thinking about making something like that, but I had no energy to start. and, as always, thank you for the cozy video :)
really feel the podcast struggle! i listen to quite a few fiction podcasts and started to see them simply as part of the stories i consume. since they're basically audio books, that's the catergory my brain puts them in though :D
Leigh Bardugo is very good about writing “detached” characters. Either they don’t care about us or we don’t care about them. I felt the same, it took a couple of pages to care about Lucia!
Leonie, I think a short story collection called Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata would be right up your alley. Quirky, thought-provoking, somewhat gory/shocking in a slightly indirect way, written in a very original tone, explores the question "what is normal? And why is it so important?" from all sides; great metaphorical (and sometimes direct) critique of society. It was my best read of this year so far, at least when it comes to fiction.
I adore Perfume too! I read it more than a decade ago, and it still stays with me. My best 5-star recent reads lately have been All Systems Red by Martha Wells and The Husky and His White Cat Shizun by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou, both of which I think you would like.
Oh if you like the introducing series maybe you'll like the 'very short introduction' series theres a lot pf topics that they cover sadly not pictures though i think 😅
Low key recommendation for people who liked Perfume (and probably Hannibal the TV series too…). Cork dork goes into similar detail with smelling and scents but it’s a fascinating and fun read about a woman who wants to become a master sommelier. Make sure you have a glass of good, complex wine when you read it.
I watched most of your videos and can't remember if you'd read any Jennifer saint books, but I think you'd really enjoy them. She writes retelling of Greek myths from the women's perspective, really highlighting how all these myths and stories are based on exploitation and female suffering. Her writing style is so over the top that it somehow has this baroque feeling to it, and it just keeps the relevance of the original stories in the forefront of my mind constantly, a reminder that these stories have a huge history and a heavy influence of the world throughout the ages. One of my favourite authors, every book of hers is an insta-buy for me
Perfume holds a rare spot as one of the books I had to read in school that I actually enjoyed. It's weird, a little disturbing but also just really good.
If you like cozy fantasies that still have some sort of stakes/plot, you should read Flowerheart! I just finished it, and it felt like reading a studio ghibli movie. It’s definitely not a 5 star read or anything, but it’s cozy and it’s very pretty!!
I would agree with you about coming back home and having warm tea after a thunderstorm if today was not the 31st of May. 😞 This year we had no damn Spring!!
If you like knowing a few things about a lot of stuff,I recommend the series A Very Short Introduction from Oxford press. They have hundreds of titles on a myriad of subjects.❤
Hi Leonie, i'm an older millenial and my favourite romantasy is "daughter of the fortest" by Juliet Marillier. This is an oldish book (straight outta 90s) but nontheless i think it's a good representative of the genre, we have all the juicy tropes but it all feels very "natual"... highly recommend it.
Perfume was on my read list for ages. Then I watched your readathon and your description sounded like I should reaaaally read it. Have a copy here now :)
If you want to look more into chaos, try James Gleick's _Chaos,_ which takes an historical approach to the subject. It's the book that introduced chaos to the public at large.
1550-1650 was the Spanish Golden Age because of the explosion in art and art appreciation. The Familiar takes place somewhere in that time. The Spanish Inquisition cracking down on any religion other than catholicism is a good indication of the time period
I just read Self-Made Boys: A Great Gatsby Remix by Anna-Marie McLemore and it was such a good read for me. I adored it and the characters and the relationships so much.
That audio book definitely sounds like a podcast haha. Like audiobooks are reading! But there is an art to writing a cohesive story that can be consumed via text and at a non-predetermined pace. Idk, it’s definitely a weird classification thing that doesn’t necessarily matter, but I still have an option! 😂
I'm so early there's just 70 comments...🥺💜...also- Leo's new hair looks so cute 🤌✨ Edit: I realised that her hair isn't as new as I thought and I've been watching her older videos😭...its cute nonetheless....
I miss rainy days. In my place it’s sunny winter. The rain season (summer) is over 😢 I started Emily Wilde but i got things going on and i haven’t picked it up yet. I will try one more time. Sometimes i have a hard time going back to a book.
Speaking of romantasy: I thought you might want to try A Far Wilder Magic - I adored it, and our tastes are rather similar, and it has to do with alchemy (I get a feeling you might be interested in alchemy?)
A recent favourite that I have seen being titeled a Romantasy (which I don't agree with, the plot of it doesn't just exist to make the romance happen) is A far wilder Magic by Allison Saft. It's witchy and atmospheric and is set partly in/ around a forest. The world is 20th century inspired and features some interesting themes as well. I saw the book compared to a few of Ava Reids titles which is why I ordered it in the first place, so might be very up your alley :)
it's storming here too! so fun to watch this with a storm outside too 🌧 i'm the same way with romantasy being 90% misses, but i really enjoyed a feather so black by lyra selene! i'd def recommend checking it out, i'm so curious how you'd like it!
As a recommendation... hearing you talking about The Age of Magical Overthinking... You might like How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell.
random thing that pleases me a lot about the book leo videos: the choice of keeping a small cover of the book up the screen the whole time she's talking about it
I have noticed that too and I definitely appreciate it 📚
ya i very much agree! cause some people go to fast and i can't google it or what not
You definitely have to go in expecting a little bit of drama and a little bit of nonsense. I personally didn’t like it but I understood it.

Agreed ❤️
I miss read that autistic
"What do you mean, I have to accept myself the way I am? Ew." Love you, Leonie, that was hilarious 😂

It's really sad that people still praise russian literature while russians are destroying Ukrainian publishing house warehouses.
A thunderstorm and heavy rain literally started about 20 minutes ago… So perfect timing for this video I guess 💙
was it raining all around the world lolll. my cousins in prauge rn and it was rainy there and it was raining here in Florida too 😂
no joke i’ve been scrolling for 20mins desperately looking for something to watch while i eat! I’M SEATED TIME TO WATCH
too true
Omg why is this me? I do this before I hop in a bath too lmfao
literally me right now lmao
The thunderstorm was perfect aesthetic for this vide. Loving the vibes.

I've been meaning to read this book, I'm kinda afraid to start bc old books are harder to read :')

1550-1650 was the Spanish Golden Age because of the explosion in art and art appreciation. The Familiar takes place somewhere in that time. The Spanish Inquisition cracking down on any religion other than catholicism is a good indication of the time period
The rain vibes are immaculate 👌🏼
Also scams are my secret obsession too!! Please give all your scan related Recs!
I just read Self-Made Boys: A Great Gatsby Remix by Anna-Marie McLemore and it was such a good read for me. I adored it and the characters and the relationships so much.
I loved Emily Wilde 🥰 and love the chill way you discuss books
That audio book definitely sounds like a podcast haha. Like audiobooks are reading! But there is an art to writing a cohesive story that can be consumed via text and at a non-predetermined pace. Idk, it’s definitely a weird classification thing that doesn’t necessarily matter, but I still have an option! 😂
made it here 12 seconds after upload 🏃♀️ excited to watch this after work
If you love scams - highly recommend the podcast The Opportunist. It’s like true crime but specifically about scams!
you just convinced me to read the book SO FAST when you said "i compare it to stardew valley"
Hi Leonie, if you like evil fae and whimsical, satirical fantasy, you should check out Terry Pratchetts The Wee Free Men 😊
I'm so early there's just 70 comments...🥺💜...also- Leo's new hair looks so cute 🤌✨
Edit: I realised that her hair isn't as new as I thought and I've been watching her older videos😭...its cute nonetheless....
Little Thie es, Why We Swim & The Unmaking of June Farrow - loved These!
I miss rainy days. In my place it’s sunny winter. The rain season (summer) is over 😢
I started Emily Wilde but i got things going on and i haven’t picked it up yet.
I will try one more time. Sometimes i have a hard time going back to a book.
Hey, I really like the vlogs on your other channel! please dont stop making them 👉👈
Speaking of romantasy: I thought you might want to try A Far Wilder Magic - I adored it, and our tastes are rather similar, and it has to do with alchemy (I get a feeling you might be interested in alchemy?)
The Fullmetal Alchemist fanfic! I wanted to love it but it was a bit boring?
You should definitely watch the movie adaptation of Perfume. I did an assignment on it for uni and it was wild in its strangeness
THANK YOU for the free notion template! I'm a notion girl and have been looking for a better way to organize my tbr and reading lists 🥰
Random but during my Eng 101 class when the prof said “Exams” thunder rumbled outside and it was so perfect
