I’m convinced that the reason so many main characters are sassy/over-confident in the face of imminent death is that they’ve become aware of their plot armour.

It could be, but being sassy and over confident in the face of death is also a defence mechanism for many people, not just book characters. You know fake ‘till you make or die trying in these cases 😅

Hey guys I am here because I am looking for help for an exam which is coming up in a week which is based on a novel that we (the students do not know). However, my university professor spilled some information on the novel, mainly that the novel or a certain chapter of the novel is set to play in a house/appartment on 89/Lamberton (street), which seems to be a very specific type of information if you ask me. If anyone out there happens to have read a novel which included this address I would be thankful if you could leave a short reply under this comment, stating the title and author of the novel. The Juniper and Thorn backlash also bothers me because so many of these people who consume unfathomable amounts of smut suddenly have a problem when it’s used thematically to unpack the author’s trauma.

    • @saltcaramel9083
      @saltcaramel9083 Рік тому +45

@@cerebrumexcrement Definitely. There are some popular books marketed for their smut, (like Sarah J. Maas books), or books that simply contain major or minor smut scenes (Seven Days in June, The Love Hypothesis, etc.). Juniper and Thorn was never a smut book, and was explicitly marketed as anything but, but a major criticism about the book was its portrayal of sex which was meant to be a source of trauma for the main protagonist and not a source of pleasure.

For me Fourth Wing felt like a combination of Divergent and ACOTAR... in the worst way possible. It's so badly written. Why are the characters using modern, gen z slangs in a fantasy world? Nothing about this book makes sense... the world building is sloppy, the characters are bland, their only personality is their trauma. Some scenes were taken straight out of Divergent lmao. The "districts", the bridge they needed to cross was the alternative for the jump from divergent, Xaden or whatever his name is, he's literally a copy of Four with some sprinkles of Rhysand from acotar. The scene where Violet throws knives and She only bruises the guy's ear, didnt something like that happen in Divergent too? Lol. And those are just a few similarities i noticed while reading and i didnt even finish the book. I just cant understand why people praise it so much, it's sooo bad.

The thing about goodreads that is so infuriating is that when a new book comes out that people are super psyched about, they rate it 5 stars before it even comes out just because they're excited!!!! I'm like " that's not how the rating system works"! Also if a book is hyped enough people will generally rate it higher regardless of how they really felt because of the feeling of wanting to be on the same train as everyone else. Regarding the naming of military schools, the US does have four schools with the words _War College_ in the name. One each for the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. However, these are graduate schools, conferring masters degrees. So you're only going to see senior officers there, not young lieutenants/ensigns fresh out of OCS, ROTC, or the service academies.
If you're interested in a book about a USMC officer, read _One Bullet Away_ by Nathaniel Fick. He talks about his experience in the Marine Corps from OCS through the end of his command shortly after Operation Iraqi Freedom, and how it affected him mentally both during and after his service.

yes reading on the ipad is not feeling nice for your eyes and i probably would also turn it as dark as possible but i have heard that it is also not good when you have it too dark because then the contrast of white and black might be to little thus straining your eyes even more

We have a military acadamy in Oslo, Norway called "Krigsskolen", which directly translates to "The War School"...

My friend was trying to make me read Fourth Wing, but I knew it in my heart it wasn't going to like it, nothing I heard about it made me want to read it. Then I saw your new video, and was like "okay, if Leonie liked it, I will read it". Well, thanks for sparing me the read hahaha.
On another note, I was contemplating buying Juniper and Thorn and A Study in Drowing from Ava Reid, and now I'm more than convinced.

Please please please everyone read Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher!! It is the best fantasy book I have read in a little while!
If you like fantasy and found family with a bit of a twist and sprinkling of cute romance on top you will adore this book (please note that the romance really is just sprinkled on the top, it is really light).
The world building is beautiful and and it’s at the same time an epic story that has been wrapped up in a cozy blanket. Favorite book of the year!

i will say, i completely agree on the beginning - i put it down twice but the hype kept going so i tried one last time and pushed past those first chapters - and the plot just takes off so hard that you kind of stop noticing the writing, it doesn’t necessarily improve - but the plot and characters are so good and the dragons and the twists. if you ever get inspired to try again i recommend :) but yeah… the beginning was rough.

I don't think that "War Academy" is an unusual name. The US has an Army War College (in Carlisle, Pennsylvania) and a Naval War College (in Newport, Rhode Island) (they both have UA-cam channels). These are post-graduate institutions, meant to train Lieutenant Colonels and Colonels and their naval equivalents for higher command, but still.

I read loads of Angela Carter when I was in my post-university magical realism phase (before I realised that I was looking for fantasy... it was 2006, it was a different time...) - can I suggest Wise Children or The Magic Toyshop? Wise Children is Shakespeare inspired and based around 2 theatrical families, and is written in first person so definitely get more point of view stuff. The Magic Toyshop is about a girl who goes to live with an aunt, uncle and 2 cousins in a toyshop (shockingly). There's plenty of female rage and drama and larger-than-llife characters - they're both great (although not without scope for criticism)

Honestly, I’m a grown ass woman of 34, who packs Camus and Mishima for her beach reading, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Fourth Wing. I laughed, I cried, I was giggling and kicking feet, spicy scenes’ve sent literal tickling through my skin (I haven’t even cringed, though those were as much fantasy as dragons😂)
Maybe it is just because I haven’t actually read any romantasy or fromace or whatever it is called - no ACOTAR, no Folk of air, and my only YA was Hunger games back in 2015-ish🤷🏻‍♀️
