We used to love going to Overton and Echo back in the 80's and 90's. Lots of sandy beaches in the back of the Virgin River arm to camp at and the fishing was always great. Like you said, there are different species that prefer different parts of the lake, we used to catch mainly catfish, striper, largemouths, and crappie. There weren't really any small mouths back then. We also used to occasionally catch these green softshell turtles on anchovies near the Virgin River inlet. They're ugly and mean as hell when you get them in the boat lol! Good times!
I grew up calling them 'white perch'. And then as a teenager we started fishing in the newly constructed Pearl River /Barnett reservoir near Jackson, MS, and everybody started saying, Hey, the crappie are really biting. And it was pronounced "croppy", and maybe the way you said it, crap-ee. I still think of them as white perch. Love your channel, and your family. Oh yeah, those really big ones? We call them slabs. Great eating!
This is just so sad for me. We stayed there several times in the mid-90’s and now everything is gone - the little store with bait and popcorn, the fish begging for food, the dock and tons of house boats - it’s all gone! I could cry. I’m glad you are getting some fish. We stayed out there for hours in 1997 and caught nothing! It’s probably easier now to get fish for sure.

No matter what you call it, it's the best fish to eat. They are also fun to catch. You can also freeze them by putting the fillet into gallon ziplock freezer bags. They are good for about a year. I sometimes use House Autry seafood breader, pour it into a paper bag, then throw in the fillet and shake the bag. Then we deep fry the fillets. Add some slaw to the plate with some Tartar sauce and a little Cayenne pepper. I am hungry already. Great video. By the way I have the Minkota Ulterra trolling motor and I love it. I still use the foot pedal mostly but I keep the remote close by.
Thank y'all for your great footage. I grew up on Lake Mead. 1980 on. Happy to see the level rising. Only once in 1983 the water overflowed the dam and they opened the spillways. The Overton Arm is where the Virgin River and the Muddy River flow into the lake, but the muddy river used to be clear and the virgin river was muddy.😅 True story.

Years ago my friend and I got sent over to the other side like 45 miles not far from Valley of Fire park and the only thing we caught was hell from a giant horse fly intent on getting on our backs so we left to explore that park.
You opening the lid to that live well reminded me of the time I had caught a huge wall mounting bass. My brother-in-law, May he RIP, opened the lid on that live well, and that bass saw an opportunity, and jumped back into the water from the live well and never touched the boat. Lol. I’ll never forget that. I think that bass had seen that movie before. Lol
Couple of items I added to my spice rack when frying up some catch... 1. Garlic and Ginger Paste. 2. Everything Topping (its the same stuff they put on 'Everything Bagels') I put this on veggies and salads too. Goes great on Fried Bread. On occasion, I dribble some Franks Red Hot Sauce for a Buffalo (fill in the fish). Good to see you showing what lures you're using for what fish you're after. Suggestion: If the northern parts of Mead have small sections of water(Ponds) it might be worth exploring to see if they hold any holdover monsters in them.
That area where you're questioning the rock layering angles, it's hard to say without seeing a little closer the rock types involved. but it looks to me like large scale landslides took place a long time ago, that rotated those denser looking rock strata to high angles, and more recent sedimentation has created the more horizontal looking layers in between the "chunks" or blocks of landslide debri. All these rocks look to be sandstones or mudstones, so they all formed under water, likely back when this part of the continent was covered by a shallow sea, landslides on continental margins are common and can happen at large scales. Remember the cliff faces you are seeing are a 2d slice through a more complicated 3d structure, so it can look confusing without spending a lot of time mapping it out and collecting qualitative data on rock types, rock ages, contained fossils, bed angles and the like. Interesting area for sure, Thanks for sharing it!

@8:22 brotha if you want good crappie fishing, next time you head back to Cali look at Lake Cachuma it's north of Santa Barbara, I'm not even joking when I tell you that a 5lbs crappie is a normal size there. From the boat launch head to the most eastern finger of the lake as far back as you can get and start fishing back to where you came from. We would troll with deep diving crank baits on lead line and regular monofilament line and pull 30 to 40 out every damn time. Stay away from the damned side of the lake unless it's winter and your trout fishing
I live in Oklahoma next to Canton Lake, my parents started a business at Canton 1968 before your Senior Dad was born. Our lake supplies water to Oklahoma City when Oklahoma goes into it’s 4 yr drought or longer and they drop the lake to where it’s sometimes only light bass boats can run on. Our lake sets on the flat plains in North West Oklahoma and at normal lake level the deepest part is 28 ft but yet the lake goes 19 miles from the spillway to the mouth of the N Canadian River. Okla has the most man made lakes in the United States. Looks like your lake is on the rise, the last time I was at Lake Mead it was running over the flood gates in 1999. Have a great weekend.

One of the few channels I watch videos through on. Honestly it's fun as hell hanging out via YT with you guys and seeing how fishing is out West in these areas.
Me and the wife love watching your videos, always interesting, good fishing, good hunting and history lessons. They do call CRAPpie in the south, Florida they call em specs. Here in Oklahoma you can catch slabs 2 to 3lb. We don't hunt them like we did when we were younger, we just fill the freezer. Lol. Tried to put a pic of one of my wife's big ones, yt wouldn't let me. Fish looked delicious. Keep em coming BOOMER SOONER
I love your channel. I started following you when you started giving updates on the lake. You should be proud of yourselves, you definitely come from a very respectful family something that very hard to find in families today. My hats off to you guys!!!
Vegas DTech did a vid on the Echo Bay hotel and area a while ago. Pity that this is all abandoned now, because of the water disappearing. Bad knees, I feel for ya. I got them too. Was supposed to get the first one done back in January, had to cancel. Had a heart attack instead. Now I gotta wait a year. 😢
My favorite lake fish-Crappie! My dad fished at Lake Texoma. We ate plenty of Stripper, Crappie, and Bass. I loved them fried! I also pronounce it “croppie “. I live on Galveston Bay now and we eat a lot of Red Snapper, Red Fish, Grouper, Ling, Shrimp, Crawfish, and Blue Crab. Grouper and Ling are great any way, Snapper is great fried , grilled, sautéed. However, I miss my fried Crappie!

I agree with your dad to a extent,I believe in creation but also believe in geology time and pressure water pouring over a surface overtime can eat it away and make some pretty wild surfaces, also a Earth quake can cause things to look out if place because they are ,also wind will move sand over time ,can bury and end up unburying things like how that little boy discovered the spinx.
went to echo bay for a week every summer until 2015 and stayed at the hotel & restaurant. that was my childhood. the glassy water in the evenings and cliff jumping to the monsoons/wind storms. so sad to see it.
Hope you all have a great weekend. Thanks for keeping up with the vids 🤝

I remember that whole end of the lake from the 80's. Sad to see it all abandoned high and dry.
Hope you get some more rain thinking of you guys from northern New York state
Cool video , I got stuck on that echo ramp , I had only 2wd , I need a 4x4 truck to launch out my boat .
Yeah, it’s pretty steep. I’m glad they fixed it though
Keep em coming

Lunch time here in Texas, great to see a new video to watch!!! Have a great weekend

I love your channel. I started following you when you started giving updates on the lake. You should be proud of yourselves, you definitely come from a very respectful family something that very hard to find in families today. My hats off to you guys!!!

This channel has really blown up over the past year or so
You boy's are doing justice for sure! 👍
Love your channel, SCO...
I'm from Minnesota, we say crappie the same way you do 😂 it's one of my favorite. Catch my limit quick makes me smile every time.
Love your videos gentlemen. Please keep them going. AIRBORNE!
Sorry to hear that... hope the surgery goes well
Good job guy's, man we love it when you guy's catch and cook. Makes me hungry every time. Thanks for the video guy's, Keep castin.
I believe you are near Valley of Fire State Park. Very beautiful area!
As a griddle dad i love the blackstone cooks!
My fav also
@@SinCityOutdoors maybe some day a sin city blackstone cook, or catch and cook compilation with your guys reaction and all, Just to see all the fresh cooks you guys have done. Just a thought, Keep up the great work guys!
Great video. I remember that place in the 90s. Awesome memory.
You guys are always so refreshing to watch and we love your style. I'm not much of a commenter but hubby and I l9ve you guys. You make life fun.
Blessings!
Julie ❤
I agree Jr, Crapy 😊 are one of my favorite fresh water fish and pike.
Great video good to see you guys back on the lake again! 😎 We were wondering if the Echo Bay ramp was open again to motorized launches. At 3:28 the photo there is actually the bar at Hualapai Lodge (later Lake Mead Lodge) before NPS demolished it, I only recognize because I'm working on an episode right now with the lodge in it 😊👍 There is so much history at the lake!
Nice catch. I love crappie. Now I know where to go for crappie fishing.
