Crystal Super: pimax.com/products/pimax-crystal-super?ref=mrtv (Affiliate) After watching this hands-on video, what are your thoughts about the Super? What came as a surprise to you and what did not? Let us know!
Think i want to cancel the pre ordered and get the meganex. I can't deal with bad binocular overlap any longer. BUT! What If the oled module has good overlap with the advantage of inside out tracking and eye tracking hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. But also this headset will only cost me 680 due to the discount of owning the regular crystal and a full one time payment
How would you compare visual clarity from 8KX to Crystal Light to Super? I am personally looking at the upcoming generation of headsets, waiting to get opportunity to test VR1 vs Crystal Super vs MeganeX with context of mainly combat air simulators, where both visual clarity and FOV are important for detecting, identifying and tracking threats. Spec wise, Super 50 PPD sounds most optimal, but the devil is often in detail and implementation.
Sebastian! It was great meeting you in person at CES. I was hanging out with Reinhard when you stopped by Pimax one last time before leaving. Glad you had safe travels. As far as the Super goes, it was far better than I expected based on what I had heard going into the Pimax booth Friday. I was able to spend about 30 minutes wearing the Super, and tried all three demo models they had available, and they were all three gorgeous. As a daily Crystal and Quest 3 user, who used the Varjo Aero as my daily before them for a year, I value the highest possible visuals in VR. Putting on the Super, the FOV, brightness, colors, clarity and balance were immediately better than the Crystal, Crystal Light, Quest 3 & Aero. There was slight mura, but I had to look for it and was only noticeable in white backgrounds. I didn’t get any warping when rotating my head really quickly nor did I have any pupil swim. I did notice some flickers in DCS but I’m not familiar with DCS and was told by those who do fly in DCS that it was the game. The one thing I wasn’t impressed with and expect them to improve on is the blooming. In night scenes, there was clear blooming in bright objects. I’d say more than the Crystal when adjusted. But I was informed that the local dimming was not where they want it and will be improving before release. I have preordered the Super and even in its current state at CES, I was surprised by how much it improved over the Crystal and Crystal Light. It’s only going to get better and I am excited to get a final unit! Cheers!
Delays and quality not quite there - aaaaaand no one is surprised. Pimax are too busy announcing and developing new hardware, rather than just concentrating on a very small number of products, QC and customer service. Sadly, despite their promises, they're simply not there.
So we are at the times were the headsets are $2K trying to get 8k res and no FOV bigger than what we've been used to. I'd rather see Pimax just focus on 1 headset instead of trying to make 3 at once. Very disappointing that they aren't learning anything from the past.
There’s to many new and prom sing headsets releasing soon to preorder any one of them. So I’m holding fire and staying with my Varjo Aero until they’re all out in the wild and being reviewed fully
Seems like a nice brick to put on your head. For me comfort is fundamental. I had opened a ticket at Christmas to find out if it was possible to switch the pre-order from the Super to the Dream and I only received a response today. Without even asking for confirmation, they switched me to the Dream. I don't know, but I'm very tempted to cancel and wait to figure out what to do.
Given the disappointment of the 5090 and likely future AI frame generation based cards what’s the point in purchasing these high end headsets? The hardware is now well ahead of the GPU’s and game development.
Im having the same feeling. I've been waiting for the 5090 and a new high end vr for over a year and I built a new rig for it. I used a 4080 super just to get it all set up and now I'm not sure I'm going to upgrade. Plus, if I don't use a gen5 16x card I can use the extra 2 nvme slots at gen4 8x speeds. It's a tough choice but I may stick with the 4080 this gen
@@Valkron11as someone who went from a 4080S to 4090 I’d absolutely recommend it. Made a huge difference to my VR experience. Could finally run on high/ultra settings at a steady 90FPS on a lot of games improving my user experiences both visually and comfort (motion sickness). I’d absolutely recommend grabbing a second hand 4090 if you didn’t want to fork out $2k+ for 5090
Agree. Artificial frames just won't work for two screens that need to make sense in relation to each other or else the eyes would see images that aren't really aligned.. And now that it's 3 fake frames for every 1 actual frame, those artifacts would be substantially worse. What a crappy turn of events for VR. Hope AMD's cards are better for VR.
The 4080 to 5090 will be noticeable, maybe not as much from 4090. I think 35% over 4090 is adequate. With these new headsets you need to be ok with running 80% resolution. Itll still look great because pixel density. I ordered megane8k, clarity will be great at 75% and i dont think itll be wasted. I personally also feel the 90 class cards scale better in the super high resolutions.
Even though this PIMAX Crystal Super could be a good product, being retired, the cost of the headset is just way beyond my budget. I will still watch video reviews when actual product gets released and hear what people say in how well it works, setup, etc. Also, not sure if I really need eye tracking for the games I play. I don't need something that focuses only on near or far video detail and the rest become blurry. Right now I will continue to stay with my Quest 3 for my daily usage, and works for me. Thanks for your video information. Take care.
the eye tracking has different task, it is enabling foveated rendering which means that only small portion of picture where your eye is looking in headset is rendered in full resolution and the rest of the picture at lower. You do not register the difference since the eye can see sharp in small portion of FOV and the rest is noticed but out of eye focus anyway. The advantage is that you require much less computing power to prepare the image. Since the resolution of headsets continues to rise faster then GPUs advance, eye tracking becomes more and more important feature.
@@madigorfkgoogle9349 Ah, Thank you for that information. I would have to see this eye tracking working to get a better idea if it is helpful or bad with my SIM Racing games - where right now the Quest 3 I have has no eye tracking and these resolution changes - so I get full resolutions for entire lenses which I am used to. Take care.
I was struggling to not cancel my order when they announced the 'newer new' dream headset (not that I have any intention of getting that). It really was a punch in the face when they announced a new, yet likely not real, headset when they still had not released their 'new' headset. I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt, and see how the super turned out. But based on your initial thoughts, combined with the 'newer' dream headset, I canceled my order. My original pre-order for the original crystal is still, technically, not completed (stupid lenses). Plus we are still waiting on a host of promised 'features' that probably will never see the light of day. I think I am going to stay away from anything Pimax until they finally decide what they want to be when they grow up. I am getting a bit sick of them promising things and then the next day say: "you know let's just make a new headset".

hi for this headset it will be better to take the 5090 which is often said for professional or the 5080 will bring the same resolution to something close to the difference in price which card would you choose thank you
I'm constantly baffled why the PSVR2 isn't taken more seriously as a primary option for PCVR. You want the big FOV? Total binocular overlap with no geometric distortions? OLED panels with perfect color and blacks and probably almost as bright as the Super? Better controller tracking than Crytsal? All for under $400 (including the adapter)?? We have that, it's PSVR2. The only trade-off is the mura, which is admittedly the only scar on what would otherwise be my last headset for a while. Also, everyone always clutches their pearls over the fresnel lenses, but they are quite good fresnels and have excellent edge-to-edge clarity once dialed in. Fresnels with big panels are the only way (so far) to get the huge FoV without the distortion of aspheric lenses, which is always present, even in Varjo headsets. People also really seem to want higher resolution, which would admittedly be great, if it were usable. With a 4090, I'm generally running most UE games at around 2500x2500 per eye max to maintain a stable 90 FPS. As other commenters have mentioned, what good is all the resolution in the world if we will seemingly never have a GPU to drive it?
Agree 100% One of the best and reasonable DisplayPort PCVR headsets as of now. Mura is present but you get used to it. Sweetspot is small but once in, its fine. Other than that, great headset!
I'm not afraid of fresnel lenses. I have an 8kx, a Varjo AERO and a reverb G2. My favorite of all is actually the G2. The distortion free image and great comfort make it the best. My 8kx has great FOV, but when using the G2 I quickly forget about the FOV and just enjoy the great sharp, clear distortion free natural image.
Is there a reason why you constantly compare with the Primax Light edition, and not with the Primax Crystal? as I see it, Crystal is the top edition at the moment.
Anyone know what app they are using to measure the FOV? I have a similar looking one, but its a "room" in the Valve Home app, and it doesn't have the button/circle markers as far as I can tell.
Mura it's an inherent problem of the displays, it's not something "fixable" by software, it's a hardware problem, just like the PSVR2 and Big Screen Beyond and XR4.
No wireless with these headsets. You've very limited in the type of VR games you can play. If you're sitting down playing flight sims or racing games, that's fine - but for anything with mobility, a big clunky cable ruins the immersion experience.
Nice video and never buy anything Pimax on Pre-order..(I was a 8KX backer (sucker)😒). Question: Have you heard about a new ''secret' VR headset that ''VR flight sim Guy'' is talking about in a recent video?
Pre-order and blindly send them money to encourage more garbage customer support and lack of basic decency? hahahaha I wouldn't buy a ready made lemonade in a dry desert from this company.
I feel like the MeganeX has killed the Crystal Super dead. Pimax seem to already think the same hence them scrambling to make a pancake lens Pimax Air.
I tried the MeganeX Superlight 8K at CES and it wasn’t anything that wowed me personally. Both headsets are for completely different audiences. It’s ridiculous to say one has killed the other for that reason. Even as the target audience for the 8K Superlight “live streamers who often use their PC”, I won’t be buying one. It’s way too dim, the FOV is below 100° horizontally and vertically and even though it’s lightweight, it never felt comfortable on my face. Visually it was still real solid but the Super was clearly better. Both headsets will be great depending on one’s wants and needs, but VR is so subjective that there’s place for both for PCVR. I for one would take a Super in its current state than the MeganeX
I have NOT watched the video yet, and I am about to, but I just want to say as of this moment I will NOT be cancelling my Super Pre-order in hopes that kinks are worked out before shipping, I read they were using untested panels (they stated in response to another youtube video, possibly your previous one). I only have a Valve Index, and its showing its age (glare, small sweet spot, washed out colors), however I absolutely must have 120hz at the very least. This is where the Index spoiled me. The Super will have 120hz according to them, accessed from the app. I am hoping the forehead "comfort" pad will relieve all the pressure I get on my face from the Index... However, I mostly play casual VR games, not sims.. so I am not sure this headset is for me, as it may still be too heavy. However, I am not satisfied, even from your videos, about the Meganex. I heard it also has a small sweet spot, which is my number one gripe... I heard the colors weren't that much better either than the Super with Local Dimming... The Dream Air will likely be similar... So I'll probably wait one more generation before jumping into small form factor, so I can get PCVR with 120hz OLEDs with larger sweet spots if possible, and the new Display Port standard... anyway... I'll watch your video now and comment if I change my mind, lol.
I guess I have to wait a little longer! 😭😭 Still using my HP Reverb G2 and staying away from the Microsoft Win11 24H2 update to avoid turning my headset into E-junk.
Metro Awakening, Ghost of Tabor, Into the Radius 1 & 2, Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, After the Fall, Blade & Sorcery, Breachers, Contractors Showdown, Constractors VR, Crossfire Sierra Squad, Light Brigade, Mothergunship Forge, Tactical Assault VR, to name a few.
108 Horizontal and 88 Vertical FOV? Wow thats bad. Good thing i chose MeganeX since Vertical fov is more important for immersion just like Meta researchers said and all the Valve Index owners are happy about huge Vertcal FOV even though small Horizontal
118 horizontal. And I’m sorry but you cannot talk about Meganex FOV as being great for immersion without mentioning its small HFOV. Meganex has its strengths but it’s not FOV. Even Shiftall knows this which is why they never mention FOV when promoting it.
@@Dachopper_ Yes, and that not what he is saying. He says 118 degrees horizontal and that the FOV is limited in the demo unit by software because the distortion profiles are not still finalized. Thats why he says he can only judge the FOV once he gets a final version. So you are "wrong".
@@Nobody-Nowhere lol you wrote in your first post that HFOV is 108 degrees. Please show me what part of the video he says that. Give me a timestamp. I’ll wait.

Interesting FOV comparisons are made with the PSVR2 which is only 110 deg HFOV. 8 deg is a big difference.
PSVR2 has actually more than 110h. Watch my measurement of PSVR2 FOV.
Exciting, I would have rated the headband as more stable. A passthrough should not be triggered by shaking alone.
Yea, I'm not cancelling my pre-order, however I will happily return the unit if I must. Thanks for the video guys!
Please explain mura rather than just saying mura! No one cares how it compares to the Crystal light. How does it compare to the Crystal!!
I have explained it many times. You can look it up on perplexity.ai!
I guess I have to wait a little longer! 😭😭 Still using my HP Reverb G2 and staying away from the Microsoft Win11 24H2 update to avoid turning my headset into E-junk.
Show me a game that you have to move your head like that.
Metro Awakening, Ghost of Tabor, Into the Radius 1 & 2, Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, After the Fall, Blade & Sorcery, Breachers, Contractors Showdown, Constractors VR, Crossfire Sierra Squad, Light Brigade, Mothergunship Forge, Tactical Assault VR, to name a few.
Fine, but not in a hysterical wobble, that's just nuts.
Unfortunately...
Even Shiftall knows this which is why they never mention FOV when promoting it.
thats not what he said
@@Nobody-Nowhere wrong. Were you watching? You can literally see him doing the test
I’ll wait.
