Mick Foley has said this is one of his favourite matches too, and for the same reasons. He brought his A game, and helped elevate Orton, who went on to become World Heavyweight Champion (and the youngest one too) just a couple of months later.
Mick has also talked about how proud he was of that match. I think Foley's said it beat out his Bad Blood match with HBK for his favorite match of his career.

I was at this match live. Orton was extremely hated as a heel at that time for being brash, cocky and full of himself. He called himself The Legend Killer. Me and my buddy looked at each other after the match and agreed Orton had earned his stripes and more. That match was physically brutal.
The fact Cena & Randy are at this stage is crazy lol I was watching the wwf/wwe before they debut lol time flies & im 29 the attitude era -09 was the best time of wrestling for me
That was my favorite of yours man. God bless. They don't appreciate Randy enough, I know he's not all about himself, he's very caring about the company, always did what's best for business and never left the company. Randy's 20 year career is the most epic. My own opinion.
Definitely one of my favourite matches from one of my favourite PPVs from my very favourite year of wrestling to date. Raw 2004 was the best that WWE has ever been in my opinion.
All those Legends that came out of retirement for Orton to beat are true workers of the business. They understood how to put over a new rising talent, and they knew he will benefit from it and since they aren’t active wrestlers anymore, they had nothing to lose.
Randy was always a much better heel than a face but it’s nice to see him show some respect to Mick and acknowledge how big of a career boost that was for him.
I watched this match back this past week, and it really was a classic that made Orton the man. Sure, Foley put him over huge, but's Orton's selling was unreal.

Orton did become a star on that PPV. We until this day has a bad reputation of sticking with their top guys and ignoring the ones that are fresh. Foley saw that and elevated Orton.
I feel as a wrestler, you only ever need to take one thumbtack shot, there’s no reason to do more than one as that one moment (especially if in WWE) will be remembered fondly
Foley made Randy that night, just like he made Trips 4 years earlier.
