    When I gave my last employer the courtesy of a 2-weeks notice (before leaving to start my own company), the CEO got really irate with me. I was a branch manager and had been very professional; I even prepared a turnover binder and communication to send to clients to let them know about my departure.
    When he got to the part about me not being "grateful" for all the money they were paying me (I actually took a step BACK in pay to move into the job because I wanted the experience working as an executive), I told him "That two week's notice is now a two hour's notice. Today is now my last day."

But they won't even bother calling you back for an interview even years down the road for a new role. Its almost a slap to the face. especially more so if you left years ago on your own and on good terms

      My first job at 13 in 1979... lol😅😅😅😅
      Imagine going to the branch the check was written on an thenm telling you insufficient funds. Then calling your your manager to explain what that really means because you're 13 after all. Apparently they were bad about transferring enough money into the payroll account. Learned to cash my check the day we got.
      My school treasurer had to call the President of the company directly about it because it didn't have all of my tuition money because my last check still hadn't cleared. He was a major donor to the school which is how I found the job. That first year we were paid late probably a good 12 weeks. Thankfully we were paid weekly.

    • @przemekh4857
      @przemekh4857 Рік тому +63

      @@kimc813 I will talk mainly about western Europe (France/Belgium/Netherlands). Employer treatment is not too bad thanks to local and EU regulations. They can fire you only with a notice period, going from 2 weeks to 4+ months depending on your seniorority. The unemployment benefits are more than enough to survive, and in addition to the unemployment money you also have other advantages like free/cheap public transportation, trainings (languages, IT, etc...), lowered prices for some services. If you have problems paying bills while unemployed, you can always ask social services for help (like gaz/electricity bills). The days of vacation days depend on the country (minimum 20 for Belgium, 30 for France). Whenever you're sick for a few weeks, you are paid 100% by the employer. If you are sick mid to long-term, the government pays around 80% of your salary while you're sick and can't work. Also keep in mind that no matter if you're employed, unemployed, a student... you are always covered by the public health insurance

  • @jackcarraway4707
    @jackcarraway4707 Рік тому +120

    My biggest problem with the two weeks notice is that even though it's considered "best practice", at the end of the day you're not in the phone call when future employers call the place. Some bosses take it personally when you put in notice. It's apparently illegal for ex-employers to badmouth you, but how do you know they are?
    With that said, despite the bad product design, give the two weeks notice if your boss hasn't written you up or any of that stuff and the relationship is decent enough. Better to have a 1% chance of them being useful in the future than 0%. If they want to be douches about it and fire you then, so be it.

      I worked for a company in the early 1990’s that was pretty ruthless (firing’s, veiled threats and trying to get you to work OT for nothing). However, even they were careful when it came to references for future employers to read. One employee was caught stealing from them (he really was) and they sacked (fired) him. I asked them what the were going to say if asked for a reference by a potential future employer of this person. To my surprise, given their usually MO with employees, the local manager said “we have to be very careful what we say in a reference. Unless we can absolutely prove something we can’t say anything bad about a former employee, they can sue us.” So I asked what they would write in the reference. They said a bad reference usually states “ X worked for ABC Ltd (Incorporated): from August 1st 1990 to April 4th 1993.” And that is what they said they wrote for him. Most employers know that this very short statement is a coded ‘bad reference’. UK practice I know, however I can’t imagine that any Anglo-sphere jurisdiction would be much different. Or am I mistaken, would like to hear from those with experience of this.🧐🙂

He applied and used his current at the time manager as a reference. Well he found out his manager sabotaged him by telling them he was unreliable, right after telling him he might get a crap raise for doing such a great job. So instead of putting in a notice he talked to the people looking at his application and they said they knew the manager was doing shady stuff like that for all his employees. So he secured the position then waited until end of day when the manager gave out there checks and said, “ok just wanted to let everyone know todays my last day, my toolbox is open take what you want” the manager laughed thinking he was joking. That, and if you hated your old boss, do you really want to rely on their interpretation of your work as the deciding factor of getting a new job? If they ask about my last job I tell them in a cordial and professional manner that I felt disrespected despite my hard work and tell them I dont feel my last employer is a rilable, professional or unbias enough to give an accurate reference.
    2 week notices arent for the manager, theyre for the coworkers I like. I recently gave notice that I'd be quitting a job that I took on about a year ago to supplement my income and to build up my savings. Told my manager that I'd be quitting after the following week. At first, he took it well. He asked if I found another job and I explained to him that I'd saved up enough money to go without work for a year and use that time to work on my coding skills to become a software engineer. What I didn't tell him was that I already had the right amount of money saved up since 3 months ago, but chose to stick around until the end of the year because I knew the holiday season was going to be rough (I got myself a pricey new gaming PC out of it, so it wasn't all for nothing).
    The next day, right after I clocked out to head home, he says he wants to talk to me and says that he "doesn't want to hold me back from my dream" but would really appreciate it if I stuck around for a few more weeks. The company is cutting hours next month in response to a decrease in demand (now that the Covid surge has worn off), yet he claimed that the next few weeks are going to be terrible without me and that a high performer like myself would make the transition more bearable. He said that he knows I probably have my mind made up already, but he just wanted me to think about it. I went home and decided to come visit this channel for some inspiration since I haven't been here in a while, and I thought about it. I thought about it so much that I struggled to fall asleep.
    I thought about a volunteer position I had a few years ago and how I stayed at that organization longer than I should have before realizing that they were just going to depend on me for everything and never grow into their own. I thought about the job in question and all the moments I had in the past year that made me want to rage quit. That time the restrooms had no water and I had to make do with the cheap, sticky hand sanitizer that they had instead. That time I got a paycheck and saw that I wasn't getting the overtime pay that I was supposed to get paid because of some esoteric rule that I couldn't find the official source of. Those times I had to perform the duties of a team lead without a team lead's pay because nobody else knew what they were doing. All the times I saw colleagues slacking off and taking frequent "restroom breaks", combined with the knowledge that they got paid the same as me (or more, if they had simply been there longer). Getting a raise only to see that it wasn't even close to an inflation adjustment. The certificate and a hat that I was given during the holiday season for my high performance... The certificate was printed on A4 paper! They couldn't even use something a bit more durable or get it laminated or something to prevent it from getting bent out of shape! He even followed up a few weeks later by showing me some performance data demonstrating that I, working alone, was performing so well that he couldn't keep up with my numbers even when working together with one of the team leads. I didn't really care for the certificate, but I'd hoped that at the very least I would be rewarded with a regular, predictable last two weeks free of any hassle or passive-aggressiveness. A simple "Thanks! Go pursue your dreams; you've earned it!" is too much to ask for?!
    After checking the time and realizing that I'd only be getting 4 hours of sleep at best, my anger boiled over and I made up my mind. Not only was I going to reject my manager's request from the previous day, I was going to teach him the lesson that my time is not free and that NO ONE is entitled to it! I got my 4 hours of sleep, drove over there before the shift started, turned in my badge to the security person at the front, and went back home to get some more sleep. So much for ending things on a good note! I never performed for the company, for my manager, for my team leads, for my colleagues, or even for the hope of more pay. Others may say that I should've just held back, but I'm the kind of guy that likes to challenge himself; I like to see how far I can go. I worked harder than I needed to for what I was being paid, and I did it all for me!
    Many factors contributed to my decision, and this channel was one of them. Thanks!

    Employers want "right to work" and they can terminate you without notice for any (or no) reason, but they always forget that the employee actually has that same option.

    Sometimes you gotta feel bad for the boss, because they are more stuck than you are.

    An indignant supervisor at walmart went as far to mark me as "job abandonment". I gave a few days notice.

    In india we have to give a 3 months notice. That's basically corporate slavery at its finest.

    I know this is satire and it’s supposed to be ridiculous but it’s actually painful to watch because it’s spot on.

    BTW if you give ANY notice and they decline to let you quit, that's illegal. Call a lawyer. Immediately. State Bar Association can help you find one.
