    I think the Saturn is the kit that gives you the most value for your money. The quality is top-notch and you could easily compare it to DW, Tama, Pearl, Sonor etc. And the sound is effing AMAZING! These drums deserve so much more attention. I absolutely love my Saturn IV, and I will never sell it. There´s just something truly special about that kit. And I also own a Sonor SQ2. Just sayin.

      Depends what Pearl, Sonor, or Tama we are talking about. I have a Saturn IV and they are a great kit but nowhere near my DW Custom or Pearl Reference. If the Saturn was my only kit I would be happy all the same. A good value kit.

      I never owned a Mapex, till I found a used one in mint condition with its stock heads on it a few years ago. I will probably never sell it, but if I was in the market for one. I'd seriously be looking at one of these. Just love the Mapex sound

    in 1999 I spent over $3500 on a DW Collector's series kit. 15 years later I bought a used Mapex Saturn kit for under $700, and it's every bit as good if not better. And the shells are about half the weight as the same size of DW drum. More bang (sound wise) for your dollars than any other kit out there.

    I've been playing since 1984 mostly all maple shells. Bought a Saturn V kit and I have to say the way the drums really come out in the mix is incredible!! Even my bass player said something about how good the drums sound in the mix. They are clear and just seem to naturally EQ themselves.

    Really wish Mapex would bring back the bass drum and floor tom mounting system from the Saturn III ERA. Where they didn’t drill the mounts into the shells. Way more resonance!

      I’m also not a huge fan of the large “M” part of the logo. I wish they just used the part of the logo that is the small rectangular “Mapex” part of it. Other than that the Saturns look and sound great. I have almost pulled the trigger on a couple Saturn kits over the years, not sure why I haven’t.

  • @zb695
    @zb695 3 роки тому +34

    They sound fantastic, that's for sure, but my mild OCD has a hard time visually accepting that lowered tom mounting ring that offsets the logo badge. Just makes the shell look weirdly off-kilter to my mind, especially as it so drastically differs between shell depths :L Smaller racktom looks squished next to the larger one.

    • @sinabogado2278
      @sinabogado2278 3 роки тому

    Great kit! The "Halo" feature as a damper is very nice, studio work made easy, absolutely convenient.
    The "virgin" kick looks very nice in this finish. Would like to have seen the batter-head loop for kick pedal setup. Tuning lugs (minimal) and hardware look very nice. Missed the
    actual # of plys for the kit as a whole (5,6,7?) Sounds rich tonally,(sound like Remo Ambassadors) resonance is nice also, even with the coated heads, curious what brightness with Evans heads would sound like on this configuration. Really like the option to customize setup sizes. All in all, very impressed...Mapex has certainly come a long way since back in the day.

    My heart goes out to Shane and DCP crew. Great job as always. But, whenever they do a video on a specific item, a lot of viewers often end up commenting on other items in the video instead. For example, "Here is a new snare drum" Response... "We liked the microphone you used to record it" It has to be a little frustrating sometimes after all of the time put into making these videos. Just an observation.

    Shane gave an excellent description of what's going on here. Mapex never got the same attention other "classic" Drum brands did through out the yrs. or maybe like a friend said some time ago, "I think they make nice stuff ,i just can't get past the name ,sounds like an appliance." There has been more than one occasion me and my brother Scott walked out of a Drum shop saying ," man those Mapex were the best thing in that place." The maple/birch shells especially. So like you do, you call Tom from DCNH, torment him with questions and order a classic maple Ludwig kit or a Gretsch Kit. The End.

They sound great,the finishes are stunning and there priced fairly in the market place.The only thing I don't care for are the tom mounts.Mapex and there mounting system , I don't know maybe they should try just a simple mount mounted to the drums.Its like Nobel and Cooley I really dislike there mounting system as well. Hopefully the mounting systems will return with tom brackets on the shell and bass drum mounts.I can dream!!! Just not a fan of all these oversized suspension mounts.

I spent years dialing in the 10" to find the "perfect" tone, via head choices and where it likes to be tuned. This set sounds killer in the full mix with stock heads. Great sounding drums but who decided on the badge placement on the toms? So unsightly.

    Nice kit! I couldn't care less about badges and their location. These are really nice drums. Some of the best to come out of Asia. Only niggle I have is the deep bass drum. If they could shorten that up to even 16" that kit would be a total winner.

      They make these kits with 22”x16” kicks. I have one

    I may be not the only one but the only issue I have with the Saturn evolution and Saturn is that the toms aren't mounted to the bass drum.
    I'm tired of seeing toms stands and snare stand with the 12"medium tom in it.
    Ps: I'm a huge fan of Mapex.

      Is it the looks for you or a convenience thing? I don't like using bass drum mounts but I agree that it should at least be an option for those that want it. I got an amazing deal on a three-piece saturn evo kit recently and I love it.

      @@mogwix I Totally understand you dear Friend, for me it is Totally cause i Always played drums with the mount system on the bass drums and Always liked this way. And you are right they should include those two options : bass drum filed and Virgin bass drum.

      @@metothemoon1227 Got it. I remember back when shell packs all came in 12, 13, 16 with super deep toms and you had to play them really high at a steep angle. I figured out the Yamaha tom holder fit into the base of a cymbal stand and that let me get the rack toms lower and off to the side so I could have my ride cymbal over the kick drum to the right. Mapex was one of the first I remember to have shell packs in 10, 12, 16 with shallower depths, 2.3m hoops, and all-maple shells. The included hardware could do the same tom mount + cymbal stand trick. The bang for the buck you get with mapex is incredible.

      @@mogwix Very interesting. Oh yes it was a hell of a good time.
      These good 12-13 "tom. And you're right, because at the time I had an old pearl, which sounded pretty good but did not hold too much tuning.
      I also have a vintage tama, but I'm not a fan.
      I am a new Mapex fan, at my church before there was a mapex orion, which sounded like thunder.
      I saw a video of a live with Damien Schmitt (french so crazy versatile mapex drummer). Playing on a mapex saturn evolution. It's one of the most impressive live shows I've watched, the sound is just perfect, the trio of musicians play perfectly (damien Schmitt, Hadrien Feraud, Jorge) going from rock, to metal, jazz, pop and all styles mixed. I'll send you the link if you want. You won't regret, it's just eargasmic. The engineer did a great job for this live. So Amazing

    They sound great and look incredible but that first tom badge seems like it's out of place, just looks weird like the manufacturer put it in the wrong spot.

    Mapex is meant to be played for heavy stuff like metal and rock...noone can beat mapex in sound in these genres....for example Chris Adler Lamb of God...

    The drums sound good. The finish is very cool. Not a fan at all of the halo mount look. Also it looks like the badges are not on the centre of the drum. Just wondering about the bass drum spurs. I own a Saturn 3 kit and I have an issue with the spurs. Either the spikes are out all the way or the rubber is out all the way you can’t have a combination of both which I feel it should. Does this new series still have the same set up for the spurs?

      Yeah they should’ve prob come with a different idea for the badges.
