Avian Birds DNA Testing Operation

Sex identification plays an important role in bird production. To date, it has been difficult to distinguish the sexes of monomorphic birds based on appearance characteristics. The chromosomal helicase DNA-binding genes include the CHD-W gene and the CHD-Z gene, which are located on the W and Z chromosomes, respectively. Since the CHD-W gene is female-specific, polymerase chain reaction can be used for sex determination. However, the procedure to extract DNA for gender verification is tedious and expensive. To address these shortcomings, the aim of this study was to develop a simple DNA extraction method for efficient processing of blood, liver and feather samples. Taken together, our results suggest that feather samples are more suitable than blood or liver for identifying the sex of pigeons. Compared with traditional DNA extraction, the method shortens the detection time and reduces the cost.
