The 1911 45acp is great. The only negative thing to say is that it's heavy. Heavy gun. Heavy ammo.

.45acp ball ammo will never be LESS than 45/100ths of an inch, whereas 9mm (35/100ths of an inch) hollow-point MAY expand. I own, carry, and have used both 9mm and .45acp extensively and hand-load for both. Both rounds have undergone considerable development in my lifetime, graduating from ball ammo to a plethora of hollow-points. Either will "do the job" in self-defense if called upon. Whichever you choose is your personal decision. Practice and practice some more with your choices and become proficient under stress. Pray that you will never need to call upon your chosen tool and your skill!

For the folks who have a problem with the 1911 being cocked and locked. You may not realize that if you are walking around with your striker fired tool with a round chambered your gun is cocked and probably not locked unless you have a safety.

    • @hughgray4199
      @hughgray4199 4 місяці тому +17

Precisely...! The 1911 has the safeties that are visible and for those properly trained is perfect. For the dummies not aware, the striker fired weapons are already internally cocked without any safety except proper handling.... and the most untrained will in time of crises draw a piece with their finger inside the trigger guard. Self inflicted wounds are waiting to happen. That's also why the military when adopting the striker fired systems insisted on adding an external (manual) safety.
P.S. Most people are unaware the 1911 was designed to be carried cocked and locked.

I've never heard this about American tooling in the Filipines. RIA is a name chosen to appeal to the USA market. I have a Philippino "1911", on close inspection it is kind of like a 1911 but "drop-in" upgrade parts require quite a bit of fitting which makes me question how close or far it is from the M1911 spec.
I put that gun in to my box of mistakes and try not to think about it.
You might think I have a problem with imports but that's not true. I have a Norinco and they nailed the M1911 spec with one exception, the steel alloy for the frame and slide don't match the spec, it uses a better alloy. That's a nice gun.
My favorite is a pre-war commercial Colt that was customized by a well known old school gunsmith. It's not as fancy as all the new CNC machined race guns but it's got all of old school gunsmith fit accuracy parts and tweaks done close to perfection. It looks awesome too.

I'm 74 years old retired Army NCO I carried an M16 and a 1911A1. I now have 18 1911s in my collection from a 3" Colts Officers ACP to a 7" AMT Hardballer and just about everything in between. But my EDC is either a S&W 442 or a polymer 9mm. Love my 1911s but that's a lot of weight to lug around. If I was in combat and had to shoot someone every day, I might feel differently. But if I was in combat and had to shoot someone every day, I would probably use an M4 and keep something like a polymer 9mm handy for those times when a rifle was inconvenient, like on the latrine or when stuffing my face or to keep by my rack when I slept. I might love my 1911s but other options have come and gone over the last100+ years. But if a 1911 in 45 was all I could get my hands on, I'd get over it.

Used a 1911 in the Army a lifetime ago. Used 9mm as well. Love em both. I bought a SA 1911 a couple of years ago just because of the nostalgia and the fact it is pretty bad ass and I am comfortable with it. Love my 9mm, proficient, holds lots of rounds, easy to maintain. It's my go to for anything I need for...well anything. But my 1911, love the "process" of maintaining it. Never in a rush when I am taking it apart, oiling it, cleaning it. It's the process and history of the gun. It's different. Not for everyone no doubt but for this becoming OG, I love it. Thanks for the video.

I used to be an open carry guy. Long story, but I don't anymore. That being said, I was a wheel gun carrier. Alongside that in my collection was a Rock Island Armory 1911 A1. I found that it was easy to transition between the two and enjoyed shooting both. If I also feel that I needed to conceal, the 1911 is easier than people think, but that's if you take your time on that subject. Now .45 versus 9mm... Folks, a .45 round is nearly half of an inch in diameter. Even if you hit them in the arm or leg they will bleed out in about 5 minutes if they don't receive medical attention. The 1911 works just fine in the hands of a good shooter.

I know not everyone is a Colt fan, but I am . They are expensive weapons and in the New Agent frame they allow you to carry concealed comfortably.

Reminds me of a movie, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro man, where they're sitting on the billboard and Harky pulls out that Ruger super Blackhawk in 454 casual. Saying that's what he learned to shoot with, and all Marlboro could say , was that explains it. Start small and work your way up to bigger calibers. I almost got a desert eagle in 50AE at the range one weekend. A young guy about 6'5" talk but only probably around 120 maybe 130 Pounds was shooting and he was the only one louder than my S&W 629 44mag, so I had to go see what he was shooting. He'd gone thru almost a whole box of ammo and hadn't hit shit. So I offered to buy the last mag if ammo from him if I could shoot it. He agreed, and after I put 7 rounds in the T box of his silloette target, he grabbed the gun and box and headed for his sports car. He was parked by the range officers booth, and threw gun, box and all in the trash barrel and left. Let me tell ya, I sprinted to trash barrel and the range officer beat me to the punch by about half a step. I sure was pissed that I hadn't followed a little closer behind the youngster, but that's life.

I had (had) a genuine Colt's Combat Commander that could not get through a magazine without two or three malfunctions. The guy at the LGS said that I should have known that it would need to have a gunsmith work it over, polish the feed ramps, and run 500 to 1000 rounds of ammo through it before I could expect it to be reliable, and even with all that, it might never run hollow points reliably. I've had three Glock 19s, and one Glock 17, and after many hundreds of rounds, not one has ever failed to go bang and they have never jammed up.
That being said, I'd LOVE to have a reliable 1911, and Glocks are UGLY, but if it comes down to it, I have more confidence that I can pick up any Glock at random and trust that it's going to work right out of the box, and will continue to do so as long as I have ammo to feed it. I'm old enough to remember when they first started selling plastic guns, and I thought they were cheaply made plastic ugliness, and I still do, but all of them I have used (not just Glocks) have always run 100%. Function has a beauty all it's own. But I still have to say, that John Moses Browning made a great handgun in the 1911, but he designed it for the military, and it was meant to run with sloppy tolerances and be about as accurate as a well thrown baseball and with a similar trajectory. It wasn't made to be a tight safe queen. If you want one to WORK, get a Rock Island or a Tisas.

On 9mms, the fact of its' prevalence on the battlefield, both by US Forces and most enemies, means if YOU run dry on 9mm ammo, you can forage for it from either permanently incapacitated comrades and/or from neutralized enemy troops. Yes, you may have to transfer it from their mags to yours, if from incompatible weapons, but it is still possible to do. (If you have the time and cover to do it.)
    But i still like my 1911. 😎😎😎

    Good info.
I would add one thing to think about before someone chooses a pistol though.
How does the pistol naturally point?
Sure we can train and overcome some of the natural poor point of aim.
But training can fail under stress. It fails every day in our local law enforcement engagements.
Personally, I respect the positives of a Glock in battle. But I have to think to shoot it well. A 1911 just fits me better. I can just pick it up and it's on target. But that's how it works in MY hand. I wish Glocks fit me better.
Also...trigger pull has much to do with accuracy. Few will argue that the trigger on a 1911 considerably better than the Glock.
My recommendation for 1st pistol? Find one that will point naturally for you whether that's a 1911, a Glock, a S&W, a revolver or whatever, you'll be better armed than 90% of gun owners simply because you'll naturally be on target.
    IMHO
    😊😊😊

I’ve always had an admiration for 1911s ever since I was a kid when I first saw one in Saving Private Ryan and then in Face Off with the custom twin engraved golden Springfield 1911s made me fall in love lol. Picked up a Tisas A1 1911 Government 5” as my first piece after watching a Ton of videos gaining more knowledge about them. Took it to the range and only fired off 50 rnds so far but I’m not disappointed one bit. Very accurate, very powerful (not much kickback when gripped properly), beautiful looking and when you grip one in your hand it feels like you’re shaking hands with an old friend but that could just be me lol

Fun Facts: John Moses Browning's personal 1910 prototype and original patent didn't include a manual thumb safety, which was only added later by government stipulation. And in military guard duty use, it was carried empty chamber. So when people say they carry their 1911 loaded-chamber and cocked and locked the way John Moses Browning intended, they are wrong.

Thanks for doing a follow up on your new 1911. Great to see Yak Motley gun reviews and videos again on UA-cam. You made key points on both the Glock 19 and 1911. Very practical advice on the use of the Glock 19 9mm and the 1911 45ACP. Application is practice and more practice and muscle memory - you don't think, you do. Each has its place in one's tool box. Both are excellent tools - use the right tool for the job. Well done. Again, great to see you doing gun videos again!

As far as concealment goes, I’m all of 150 lbs. and I EDC a full-size Government 1911A1 with a 10-round extended mag in shorts and a T-shirt with zero printing. The secret is a good belt and a good holster. I recommend Hunter Constantine for the belt, and Tier 1 Concealed for the holster. I’ve tried many, and those eliminate printing and provide tons of comfort; they even feel like they reduce the weight of the pistol significantly.

The main thing you need to know about the 1911 is that you carry it cocked and locked, that's with the hammer back, safety on, and one in the chamber. You need to train for that and make sure you can thumb sweep you safety quickly. The fact the 1911 is single action, makes it a very pleasant gun to shoot, and it's a very accurate firearm. I love my 1911s but I would prefer to carry a double action of some kind, but that's just me. Carry the firearm you feel you're the most comfortable with.

See, I would disagree about which gun is really "entry level" for learning to shoot. I contend that plenty of Soldiers learned the proper 1911 grip and trigger control first, and as a result, in most cases, went on to shoot anything and everything else better than they would have otherwise. But yeah, these days, a lot of people come to the 1911 the other way, including myself, from clunky "combat triggers" which are just awful. Learning the 1911 well enabled me to go back and correct a lot of bad habits that improved my shooting of guns that I had owned for much longer. It's definitely my preference now. I own a few "wonder 9's", but 1911 .45ACP became my preference. I don't need to win the whole war with one magazine, and I'm no longer afraid of mag changes. One round will make somebody duck and cover long enough to create Tueller-drill distance. Most "suppressive fire" from a handgun is just wasted ammo.- that tactic is terribly far from the ideal employment of a pistol in an engagement.

Enjoyed the very real discussion about the 1911 in cocked-and-locked position looking to many like the equivalent of a lit stick of dynamite. It's not unusual that the carry practice takes some getting used to, even for those who've had 'history' being around guns. To the untrained, insufficiently informed eye it does have an aura of "Yeah, okay; but are you ABSOLUTELY certain it's okay? . . . What if . . . ?"
Yak's comments on no need to blow $1200 or more on a 1911 "with all the bells and whistles" when a basic, bare necessities $500 - $600 edition will do just fine "thank you, very much" eases the burden of a financial squeeze for those on the fence, to ahead and take the plunge with the confidence the lesser priced edition is quite alright.

Great Common Sense Video on the 1911!
I have always wanted a 1911 but never could afford the one I wanted which is in the 1K> bracket to do NRA slow fire three gun pistol shooting! (45ACP, Intermediate (.45 or .38) and the .22LR)
I have never been a Glock fanboy, In fact, I carried a S&W Model 15 for many years both openly and concealed, while everyone else was going on the Glock craze, and the Hornady 158GR SP .38 SPL ammo I use in it is just as effective as the 9MM on any given day!
Recently I saw an offer from PSA I could not pass up on their GLOCK clones and purchased their version of the G-17 and the G-19, never been happier I did!
But for EDC nowadays, I carry the venerable S&W 9MM SHIELD with LIBERTY AMMO 50gr HP Ultra Light (2000FPS)
I also love your comments on ammo, as I've had this argument so many times with people who act like and think like they know all about ballistics and firearms yet when they open their mouths, they prove they don't know squat! 🧐
P.S. I have been salivating over the recent Tisas 1911 offered by PSA for $400 as a starter platform for 1911 I'd like to have which is eerily similar to the one you showed here from Metro! 👏🏽 👍🏼☺

I'm with the Fat Electrician, .45ACP was designed with anti-cow technology. Good enough for me.
As far as which 1911, well, 3 of mine are Springfields, selected because of the forged frame. Yeah, a soft frame could enlarge the hole for the slide stop so forged for me. This was several decades ago. The current offerings have all the checkering and bells and whistles available off the shelf that I had to pay a gunsmith to do and then wait for months.
To paraphrase Massad Ayoob, "If I don't know what I'm getting into I'll take my Glock with a +2 shoe. If I'm going to a gunfight, I'll take my 1911". Sounds like sound advice to me.

I started off with a 1911A1 several years ago. After a period of time you get to the point that shooting/cleaning the old .45ACP 1911 becomes instinctively a habit. By the time I picked up a Glock I was more used to the function and feel of the old 1911, and the Glock triggers took me awhile to get used to on a daily basis. I like them both, but for different reasons. The only things I changed on my 1911s were the standard grips for thin grips and the magazines. Wilson is not the only definitive choice in magazines. Chip McCormick makes some very sturdy magazines. As for the 1911, it all boils down to what works for you. If you prefer the Glock, then so be it. The hardball 230 grain .45ACP is easy to reload, and end result will make an impression on your perpetrator. I’ve had several different 1911s in different calibers, and the platform has stood the test of time, but in today’s world 9MM is more easily accessible, so as for going to war the Glock fits that use.
One of my favorite 1911s is a Para Ordinance C7.45 LDA ( Light Double Action ). The trigger is a dream to work with and you’re not having to pull the hammer back for the first shot. Sadly the Para Ordinance Company was folded into Remington, and they didn’t have an interest in the LDA operation of Para Ordinance’s innovation to the 1911. Thanks for your perspective of the old girl, and the comparisons of Glock and the design of the 1911.

My Tisas has not had any issues feeding or extracting anything I shoot in it but like you, I stick to ball ammo in my Tisas 1911, but in my Glock 21 45 I shoot hollow points and ball ammo tho. 1911's like you said like to be run wet until they have some wear on them. Concealed carry is easy because I carry inside the waistband so it does not matter if I have a 3,4, or 5-inch pistol. A good belt is crucial for concealed carry.

Nice video. I would add that the 1911 has 120° grip angle meaning if you can point at your target with your index finger, you can fire your 1911 with no sights and still hit your target. You don't have to carry as ammo when you can score hits the first time. The commander is lighter. For reducing recoil, swap out the 16ld spring for a 21lb spring and use 180gr ammo, it'll kick like a 9mm.

Don't ask me to hold your beer, but I've never met a shooter that was better than his gun. My edc is a Beretta Nano with a red dot. It isn't the best shooter I own, but it's the gun I shoot best with after thousands of rounds. I also own a S&W 629, a SAA, CZ-75 clones, and whatever else tickles my fancy every time my wife yields the moral high ground to me (which is quite rare). I'll never understand the "What should I carry?" question... There's only one right answer, carry the one that you are best suited to defend your life with. If you want something smaller, bigger, quieter, louder, prettier, or shinier, go buy it and start practicing with it. When your practice with it makes it the gun you are best able to defend yourself with, start carrying it. Bottom line though, if you only have one, it's the best one you have. Guns are like golf clubs, the practice is worth more than the price.

Heavy is good for recoil management. The 1911 carries great in a shoulder holster Superman carry (under a one size up snap fastener shirt). Horizontal with the Commander length and vertical with the Government model.
