Did you have any issues with the sti rack and the sensor kicking in the ABS and traction control because the STI is a much quicker turning rate then the forester? I heard this is a common issue with sti racks and I’d love full Oem function.
Hey I have had this video bookmarked for probably two years now and am finally ready to swap racks!!! What year sti racks work for the sg9 forester? Mines a 2006
If you're in the US, you have an SG5 or SG6 since the SG9 is the STI Forester that was only sold in Japan. Any STI rack up to 2007 would fit easily. Also, any 2015 and newer would fit but I have been told they are wider and would need to have the outer tie rods shortened by about an inch. Disclaimer: Whatever choice you make, you do so at your own risk.
This is the first of your series i have followed - love your presentation, well photographed and your commentry is excellent. One question, what is the advantage of changing the rack to an STI
The STI rack has a close-ratio pinion gear. Basically, that means that the Forester steering is 3 full revolutions from Full left to full right, or lock-to-lock; while the STI rack is only 2 and 1/2 turns of the wheel. It may not mean a lot for daily driving but makes a huge difference on the track. Plus, I like the tighter feel in the steering.
@@DIYEVERYTHING That makes sense - many years ago I used to drive Formula Vee and we increased the lentgth of the pitman arm to give more direct steering. Must catch up with your thread to see what you have done. Love my Forrester 2006 luxury pack, just did the complete motor, mainly to replace those horendous head gaskets with MLS. Have had the car from new and still runs like a dream.
@@gabenavarro186 The original fitted head gaskets to all Subarus until about 2012 were single layer cheap composite gaskets, that seem to have a very predictable failure at about 200,000K, starting with an oil leak, and then total failure, and expensive fix. Better to catch them early. To change head gaskets is a motor out usually, but can be done, with difficulty, by tipping the motor to the side without fully removing it. The WRX came with Multi Layer gaskets that are more robust, and do not usually fail. Subaru saved a few dollars by fitting the cheaper gaskets. As the name implies MLS have layers of very thin sheets of stainless steel held together and coated with specialized surface coatings and embossments to help seal them. They are more expensive, but worth the cost. Any headwork on a Subaru is a nightmare as ypu have two heads to deal with.
@@gabenavarro186 Multi Layer Steel, pretty much every subaru mechanic I know says to swap to the turbo headgasket and you won't experience any HG problems, 300K miles later and I'm a believer.
The mount may be different, much like I encountered, but it should fit just fine. However, I think you would be better off finding a 2015+ STI rack because it's wider, only by about 1/2 an inch, just like the sh body.
Thanks for the video, I intend to do the same (but RHD) :) To confirm: * Steering linkage end, you just reused original SG Forester backet but with longer bolts. * Other end works fine with SG Forester bracket + bushing.
That's how it worked out for me. Being right-hand drive may be different, so be prepared to swap bolts, brackets, or anything else that may come up. Good luck.

Pretty cool and seems like a good mod. You ever think of transmission swapping to the 5mt or 6mt while you got the engine and such out? Keep it up! 👍🏻
I have considered it and I address this in an upcoming video.

I have not had any issues with the rack or the Forester bugging out. Keep in mind my Forester is a 2006, VDC didn't enter the Forester until 2007.

What year(s) Forester and what year(s) STi are you comparing here?
2006 Forester XT and the rack is from a 2006 STI.
im in need of a steering rack for my 05 forester xt. would you know what sti racks are compatible for my car?
2004 to 2007 would give you the best match. I've heard a lot of people have gone with a 2015+ but I'm not sure how the fitment is for the newer ones.

I heard some other people mentioning having to cut the ends of the rack to be able to get proper adjustment range. Did you end up having to do that?
Didn't have to cut anything. I belive that's on the 2015 plus models because the racks are longer for the new wider body style.
Will this work for a 2010 sh Forester XT?

Which year STI rack did you install on your SG Forester?
It's been a while so I'm not 100% positive, but in previous comments on this video, I said it was a 2006 or 2007.
Good informative video.
Can you help me with the p/n of steering pump rebuild kit for Forester 2.5x 2004.
Try subaruparts.com for the part number. If they don't have it, then they probably don't make a rebuild kit for it.
@@DIYEVERYTHING thank you 🙏 Sir
It sucks big time connecting those last two lines with the motor in place.
It can be pretty tough but it's doable.
Will this 2007 steering rack work with my 2001 forester?
It will fit any sg series forester but I'm not sure on the sf.
What's the benefit of using the STI rack?
Faster response when turning. Most noticeable if you do rally cross.

Great video! Just one question, is the sti steering rack you used from a 2015+ model?
It's from a 2006 STI. The 2015+ is wider than previous years. While it will fit, the inner tie rods may need to be trimmed down to fit.
what year sti is the rack from
2006
what year is this sti steering rack???
It came from a 2007 sti.
Sweet shirt!
