Great job you guys your cabin is taking shape nicely.
Thank you my friend.
in regards to trim around window... it seems the strips you framed the window with... are recessed when you install the horizontal live end boards, especially the bottoms strips. The angle of the boards look to appear it will allow a driven rain to seep in behind it... should there be an extended sill of some sort to divert rain from leaving the bottom of window and flowing behind board???
You are correct, the bottom sill will need to be pulled and replaced with a better sill. When we did it it was our first time doing anything like this so I wasn't sure how far things would stick out. Good catch and thanks for mentioning it.
Woot Woot I'm glad your dryed in. A Home of your on.
Ginger L USA ALABAMA ❤
It really looks wonderful! Congratulations! Whoot, Whoot! 😊
I can't say that I never seen live edge trim but I guess I never really paid any attention to it. I've been looking forward to getting to this point. I really like it. Looks great. I love that you milled it yourself. I think is why it got my attention so much and I was anxious to see how you did it.
LMAO. about the chicken!😂😂😂😂😂
Looks great. New sub
Thanks so much Jeanette, we are glad you are here and glad you like what you see, 😊. Hope you enjoy our whole cabin series. Best wishes
The cabin is looking great I love the live edge!!! sending love from Burton MI.
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words! Who hoo for a Michigan shout out!
Very Nice I like how it looks guys. Well tomorrow I will be making an off on property, hope I'm the highest offer. 🤞
Thanks Tommy. Good luck, hope it works out. Let us know
Thanks Tommy, hope it works out. Keep us updated.
Your siding looks great. I am planning on doing that on building I'm putting up. Some questions if you don't mind. Did you stack and sticker your siding and trim for while to let it air dry? Since it has been a while now was there any issues with warping or cupping and did you have to come back and nail the bottom sections? What about the bark did it eventually fall off? The wood I'm planning on using for both trim and siding is silver(soft) maple. Is that a good choice? What was your nail choice? Would deck screws work better?
We installed everything green, single nailed it along the top with 3 inch ring shank nails. The bark is slowly falling off, but some staying on hard as a rock. We do have a lot of warping and are in the process of going back and nailing the bottoms or maybe using screws so it can help suck in the warped board rather than punch it and crack it. Honestly stacking and seasoning the boards would work a million times better by helping with warping and such, but we wanted to try this and it is working just OK. I plan to make a video about it in the next month or two when we get to the point of finishing and sealing it.
hello, I saw the video timelapse. Now I’m watching one by one the videos of the construction. It feels like one is ahi. hehe . You also see the difficulties of the job, and the risks, thank God, the ladder was just that, it could have been a big hit. Well, I’ll keep watching. Greetings from Buenos Aires Argentina.
Very cool my friend, thanks for checking them out, glad you are enjoying them. Ya things could be way different if I had taken a serious fall on that ladder.
I’m starting this same process on a shell of a cabin I’m restoring. You’re about a year or 2 ahead of me, so I look forward to watching & learning so when my time comes I’m good to go 👍
You can do it!
buy yourself an electric timmer and sander.. that way even with fresh cut wood would you'd have more smoothness.
Thanks, Will do that for sure
Looking great....are you guys living up there full time and building this?
We are at the property most the time. We go down state to work and play catch up. I work a small business so I have to tend to customers every other week or so.
hey guys nice job on the siding that really looks nice but I got a question for you that nail gun you got is that a 21° can you tell me if you like it and do you have a model number that you can help me with I like to get me one please let me know thank you very much looks good
Thanks Joe.....yes that nail gun is a 21 degree.....and honestly it has worked very well....it is the cheapest 99 dollar model you can buy at Harbour freight. Think the name on it is banks
I think your going to find that the window trim not hanging out over the siding is going to rot and mold your wall below the window.
Thanks BS. I think I'm going to have to redo that in the spring. Put some type of sill there to shed the water. Thanks for looking out. Best wishes
I was think the same thing. Need some flashing in there.
Now that the weather has warmed up we will be back outside closing things up. The other 3 sides of the cabin too, lol
That is beautiful guys! The curves in that live edge just make it look SO cool!
Almost......alive, right? Lol thanks Sean
Looking good woop
What about insulation? Looks nice though. You made it look easy
Floor is just reflextic bubble foil rolls. It works great. The walls and ceiling just have regular fiberglass insulation
I’ll bet plumbing will be so impossible to do.
Nice cabin house
We have a bathhouse (check out our bathhouse video), we will figure out something basic for our kitchen and grey water, and bring water up to the cabin as we need it ( check out our water gathering video!)
Thanks for tuning in and the kind words.
The campsite is looking great, love the coffee intro. Lol keep backing up till it looks good, I do that too. The siding is looking incredible.
Thanks Mike, means a lot coming from you. Best wishes to you and Sarah.
Looks absolutely amazing!!! Solid work as always. Be Safe!!
Thank you! We love it also! Thanks for tuning in and have a great weekend!
That looks old school, just beautiful! I love it.
Thank you!
LOOKS AWSOME!!!
Thank you!
I like the live edge... looks awesome
Denis
Thanks Denis, I'm really happy how it turned out.
Actually stumbled apon another video of yours ...been watching the whole build....its amazing
Awesome. Glad you are enjoying it. We are feeling amazing about it, lol. Nice for you to say so. Best wishes
How did u make out on the siding, did it curl
The siding is holding up well. It is a little curled but I'm hoping now that it has been up for a year to go back and screw the bottom edges of it. I want to screw it so it doesn't put too much pressure on it too quickly and split. But it turned out pretty nice. 1 inch thick seems to curl less than 3/4 or less
What size cabin is this? Perfect size
16x24 foot
Nice we about to start on mine in a few months
Very cool.....send us some pics on Facebook or via email. Love to see it
Shouldn't the window trim be on top of the siding?
Never seen a house with trim on top of siding.....only vinyl siding has channels for everything
@@OffgridwithJayandJen I didn't realize that, thank you for replying as I am about to do the same kind of siding on my shop
I absolutely love that live edge look that is really cool!!! GREAT JOB you two munchkins LOL. Don't forget to make a sign that says: "Built 2020 by Jay and Jen" and be sure to use a piece of that siding with some live edge on it for your sign.
Brilliant idea
The siding looks awesome. Was that wood milled locally?
Jason bought a frontier sawmill this summer so he milled it himself!
Check out video 13 or 14 to see him making the siding! Thanks for tuning in! We appreciate it!
Off grid with Jay and Jen great job!
Looks really nice!
Thanks You so much....Best wishes
looks amazing. Im also in michigan about to start my cabin project. Did you mill your own siding?
Thanks Garret, yes we bought a sawmill for our property just to build this cabin and milled all the siding, Lots of beams, and everything for the whole deck. Tons of videos of all those projects if you check out our video list. Appreciate ya watching.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen what a great idea. I really should get 1 what mill do you use?
@@TRIPPMOFOSHO We have a frontier sawmill OS27. I actually have a 2 year review video coming out in the next couple weeks sharing my experience with it....so keep an eye out for that.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen will do
Looks great! Nice job.
Thanks Wayne
Looks so beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Your siding looks great! It must feel like an extreme accomplishment to know you cut and milled it yourself. The landscape is beautiful there. How many acres do you own?
Milling the siding from our own trees and my own mill is very satisfying. Looking forward to another milling season where I can produce a tons of useful things. We only own ten acres but have public land near by so it helps give us less neighbors and more space to explore. If I had a million dollars laying around I'd probably buy a million acres right away. Lol
My favourite siding. It's so beautiful. Better than a log cabin!
Woot woot
Woot! WOOT! 😊😊
Woot woot Melinda 😊 thanks for all the support
Did you mill your own timber from trees on your land?
A Lot of it yes. The siding and most of the posts and beams we milled ourselves. Most of the framing lumber and rafter boards were either re-used older boards, but some was purchased. We also milled every board, post, and beam for the wrap around deck you will see in newer videos.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen There is a special feeling in turning ones trees into lumber to build things, especially a house. What did you use to preserve the timber from rot and critters?
The live edging looks great
Thanks, glad you like it. Catching up on the vids I see. Thank you for that. Have a great day.
Awesome video
Hey, thanks Colleen.....glad you enjoyed it. Lots more videos on our channel if you're interested. Best wishes
Looks good!!!
Thanks Nat
That looks really nice.
It looks beautiful!
Thank you for the kind words. We think so also :D
Looks great, wonder what part of northern Michigan you guys are at? I’m in manistee National Forest area of Michigan. My place is off grid, all solar. Enjoy watching your place develop like my have👍
Thanks bob. We hunt the manistee national forest just south of Baldwin for deer every deer season. It's a beautiful area.
@Bbjones Jones thanks again. 😉
Cabin is looking really beautiful, that chicken looked good enough to eat! lol Blessings
Thanks Granni Anni. I may not be a great builder, but I can work magic when frying up some food. Lol. Best wishes.
When you mentioned live edge siding I wasn't sure how it would turn out...WOW. I love that! I almost can't wait to watch it age in.
Thanks Randy, it will.be fun watching how it turns out.
NICE VIDEO...
BEAUTIFUL CABIN...THUMBS UP!!!!
Yay, thanks for everything. Best wishes Alec
Looks great! Did you mill your own live edge or order it?
We made it all with our mill from poplar trees on our property. 😊
AWESOME!!! How are you liking it? Do you have a video showing how you milled it?
@@sixgunsue8 It is awesome siding.....It has warped and twisted a little so if you like perfect then it's not for you, but we love it.....rustic if our style. We have tons of videos on our channel on our video list. I can't really Point you directly to one, but lots of milling back then and we just did three video in the last month about making the rest of the siding and finishing it. Hope you enjoy the videos you find. thank you
Whoot whoot :D
=) woot woot
I just discovered we have a friend in common in Mike! Had no idea he has spawned another youtube channel too, lol. Can't wait to start checking out your videos. Your place is definitely much more impressive than what I'm trying to do. I love it man!
That's awesome man, glad you found us and hope you hang around. I'll check out your channel if you are making videos for sure. Our little cabin was suppose to be simple but once we started we didnt want to be disappointed so it got a little out of hand, lol. How you had a great holiday and have a happy new year.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen absolutely will do for sure, I've already lived through your terrifying ladder experience now, lol. It's really awesome though man you're doing great work. Keep it up and I'll be cheering you on for sure!
@@GemCityDudeistPriest thanks so much buddy. The kind words help give the boost we need once in a while, so thank you.
Love it!!!
Thank you sue!
New subscriber.....so you used maple for siding? And leaving the bark on it looks alot better , I can assure you in 1820 they wasn't worried about taking the bark off of the tree, they were worried about having a roof over their head. It's looks really excellent
We actually used maple for the trim and poplar for the live edge siding. We are hoping it holds up ok, putting some protectant on it in the spring. Thanks for watching and subbing
@@OffgridwithJayandJen well poplar does sound like unstable siding but I've seen log homes built out of solid poplar logs and built in 1870's and they are still standing today
From what I researched poplar is actually quite a bit harder than pine, which is commonly used, but just lacks the pine resins which help with rot, so I'm hoping stains can protect it once it is seasoned. Best wishes UB, and happy turkey day
Love live edge siding,my cabin will have this
Awesome....I think everyone has their style and some of us love the live edge and some love the board and batton look.......glad you are on team live edge, LOL
Beautiful Job ! Loved that it was Green Lumber Also, Gives me hope not Having To Wait A Year or So to Get Started On Our Al. Homestead !
Ya if you use green lumber in this fashion just single nail it until it dries.....so it doesn't shrink and crack. Then go back and nail it again later. If using for framing it has to air dry before closing your walls up so it doesn't mold
We did our whole deck in green lumber too....check out our video list and watch the deck videos. All raw and green lumber we milled from our trees. Best wishes
@@OffgridwithJayandJen , Thanks So Much For All The Helpful information, God bless 🙏 You & Yours ! , Penney C., Al.Homestead
Great job! I love the “live edge” look. Looks like a settlers cabin. 👍👍😊
Thanks so much. We love it too
Wow. Your live edge looks the best I've seen!
Wow back.....that is quite the compliment. Thanks so much
I would put some wood glue in the seams.
Thanks smiley. I think we will be adding some sealant once things hang for a while. I was afraid with the wood drying out it might be better to wait a bit.
Great job. Incredible attention to details. Woot woot!
A big woot woot back rich. Motivation, thanks
nice siding has the log cabin look
Thanks Ian. Log cabinish without years or peeling bark and building. Lol
Wow! Wow! Woowwww!!!! Love it!!!
So so so happy you like it.
Looks great!!
Thanks so much Joan, glad you like it, we do too. Best wishes
Phenomenal job 👍👌
Thanks so much. Nice name by the way, lol. Best wishes
