    Awsome cabin, but dude, do a 12x12 or 15x15. Ted Kaczynski built a bigger cabin than this.

      It’s a tax and code thing in New York. Any larger and I need permit’s. Inspections. Town approval. And my taxes that are already high would more than triple. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take care and God Bless.

    What size is the cabin

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  2 роки тому +1

      It’s 8’x12’ with a half loft upstairs. For tax purposes it only counts as 96sf.

      Thank You. I get a lot of criticism from people who don’t understand it’s a cabin in the middle of the woods. I really appreciate your positive comment. Sincerely Thank You. Take Care and God Bless.

    I noticed you are not using any insulation - does the foil eliminate the need

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  Рік тому

      It’s such a small place that the r-foil insulation does a pretty good job of reflecting heat. The cabin stays comfortable down to about 10degrees Fahrenheit. After that it does get a little chilly and more insulation would help that, but then it would also make for a nesting spot for rodents, chipmunks and such. They are a real nuisance in the woods. So for now the I’m staying with just the bubble foil. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.

    That's a very fine Job.!! Approximately how many days did u work on th build of this cabin? My sister has seen it, & asked me. I said I thought it took about 1 month to build. I'm not certain, but is th dimensions 8X12? Thank friend GOOD JOB.!!! 👍👍👍

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  2 роки тому

      It took about 60 days, but that’s because it took me hours each day to get the material back to the build site. No road so everything was carried or brought by atv. If i could drive up and unload lumber at the build site it probably would have been done in 30days. It is 8x12 so only 96 sf plus the loft. It falls just under what we are taxed on in upstate NY. If over 100sf you need a permit and has to be built to NYS code. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.

    Nice looking, Your foundation should be more then just a few corner stone, They will sink in the ground with time. Un treated base lumber will rot that close to the ground. No cross braising on the corners. If you get heavy winds the walls will start to sway. No real insulation, that shiny R-board will not keep out the cold very good. But it's your place you can cut corners all you want. I had to learn the hard way self a few times on things. Good luck.

    • @theweekendoutsider

      A big part of how the place is built is because I couldn’t get materials in to it. I’ve spent time in the cabin at -5 and been nice and warm, to the point of opening the windows to cool it down. Been in the little cabin with gust’s of 60mph and so far so good. Also the whole cabin was built for under $3000. I did treat the wood near the ground as explained in the video. Sure I would have liked to do some things differently but cost(cabin was built during the lumber shortage) and accessibility (I cross 2 streams and a bog with no road just a small trail) made that not possible. Anyway thanks for watching. Take Care and God Bless.

    I loved watching your cabin build. How far of a hike in was it from where you parked your vehicle? I see you managed to use an ATV, which is great. I have an off-grid trailer with annex - which is my cabin portion butted up against the trailer. The wood burning stove is inside the cabin, along with a couple of rocking chairs, and shelving. And the trailer is the rest of our accommodation - kitchen, couch, dining area, and bed. In the winter, we're a 12.4km ride from base camp where we park - access is only by ATV or snowmobile, and in the spring to fall we are able to drive in on the maintained logging roads. It's a wonderful place to be - right on a mid-size lake in the Algonquin region of Ontario, Canada.

      Thanks, It’s only about 1/2 a mile in but you have to cross 2 creeks and a bog along with the hills. Tried to carry in all the lumber but quickly realized after the first couple weekends I’m not in my 20s anymore lol. Your cabin setup sounds beautiful. I’d of liked to build a little bigger cabin but in the Adirondacks of NY the taxes would have been to much for me. I love Canada my grand parents were French Canadian. your wilderness is some of the most beautiful in the world. I have a friend who has a camp on Parent lake 9hrs north of Montreal, just gorgeous country. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.

    Why did you not put insulation in the walls? Still a great build.

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  2 роки тому +4

      I’ve had trouble with insulation in the wilderness. It quickly becomes a home for rodents. This time the silver roll is bubble foil. It has a low R valve but good at reflecting heat. Even with just the little heater the cabin heats up quick. Once the wood stove is in it should be great. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.

    Nice to see your son involved. When he gets older he'll appreciate how hard Dad worked and it'll be something the family can be proud of and enjoy together. You mentioned insulation and rodents, use the blue closed cell Styrofoam sheets, they don't like that

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much. I’m lucky he likes helping and has my love for the outdoors. When I move the walls down I’ll definitely consider the styrofoam sheets. Getting them trough the trail might be tough, but I could always precut them. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.

    What no insulation that place must be pretty cold during the winter

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  2 роки тому

      The bubble foil offers some insulation, but the walls have to be moved down as they shrink and dry. At that point I can decide to put in more insulation or not. I’ve slept In The cabin at 5 degrees and been warm. It’s a very small cabin. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.

    What a great little house, Very well built it will be still be standing in 100 years time The only thing I would’ve added was insolation inside of the walls looks like you’re in a pretty cold climate

    • @theweekendoutsider
      @theweekendoutsider  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much. It’s was -5 last visit to the cabin. The bubble foil insulation allows for the cabin to heat up quickly. I still have to move all the walls down as they dry and shrink. This will allow me to add additional insulation if I choose to at that point. Still undecided about adding more insulation as rodents become a problem in the forest with insulation. Thanks for Watching and Commenting. Take Care and God Bless.
