Finally a boardgame I can play in the bath!
At last
This video had a really good level of moisture. I feel like a lot of videos are unwilling to moisten to the extent that this video did. Thank you.
No, it’s moist because of the liquid thrown on the board
Well, the "Best Use of Knives in a Boardgame Review" award for 2019 is all sown up.
Are we just gonna ignore the No Pun Included murderfest?
A sterling comeback from their last win with String Railway.
ur right, everbody knows it always goes to knifey-knife reviews.
Publisher: "Well ... we tried to make the player board out of cardboard - but in playtesting we discovered that our testers just punched out the holes and threw the mats away - wondering what to do with all the square player tokens that the manual doesn't even mention ..."
Roll Player all over again...
A thin sheet of paper that says STOP in big red letters that is placed at the top of the box and provides instructions seems cheaper.
thank you for the laughs
Lmao
@@NoPunIncluded Some someplace had a wharehouse stuffed full of plastic and what if we use the plastic instead? And oversupply solveds.
Seeing chips dunked in milk and cereal gives me extreme anxiety.
Codeacious Why would you do that! It rustled my jimmies.
Explative off. Quintin can do anything he wants. At least he's not smoking crack. On second thought.... oh dear, I've been crying over Amy so much these days.
Me too.
That is, in fact, specifically WHY they do things like that in their reviews. Because they know it bothers people.
It's okay, it's not real milk. Its some milk substitute stuff- completely different scenario. Its sultanas which give me anxiety, I hate the little backstards.
I’ve never seen a Dolly-Zoom quite like that
Don't you mean a Dol-Leigh zoom?
Spike Lee does that a lot...but you don't normally see the person pushing it. LOL
I was only watching with half an eye while shaving, and I was giving them props for the ambition to dolly zoom. Then I looked again and decided this way was better.
That scene prompted a thumb up to the video and 5 minutes of laughter.
Dolly's the name of the woman pushing and pulling the chair.
why did quinns figure out the manual was stab proof?
I think it was do or die
Because the rules are horrid.
He's a review completionist. He probably tested the chips ability to easy tensions in the middle east, but the rules video was getting bloated.
He used it as a belt buckle and then ran for president.
(Do I win the obscure reference joke of the day award now?)
@@bennelson270 Asking for a friend, can you explain that?
But it's no Crokinole!!!
The Standard Reference Pear has been a great running gag for years, but I think this video is the first time it actually gave me a perspective on the scale of a game's components.
Picked up this game specifically from this review, never heard of it until then. Now, 1 month in and I can't get enough of it, I have almost all the expansion pieces, and am super bummed that the health chips and dice tray are out of stock! Awesome game for solo or co-op, a must buy that doesn't get enough coverage. It's pricey but worth every penny if you like RPG and skill tree games.
Why are you Stephen Merchant?
“Things get DICEY”
“ CHIPPING away at your health”
This is what I came for.
Funny but wow it's expensive for a boardgame...Well, I guess I've got two kidneys for a reason.
I sold my soul to afford most of the TMB series.
Worth it.
Too many bones: “I’m expensive”
Kingdom Death: Walks in and flops dick on floor...
I believe it's called Too Many Bones because that's how much I've spent on it and also how many my wife is going to break when she finds out.
The game is addicting and you want every expansion and every character.
Its Mer 😂😂😂
Which is a perfect example of the "Three prices you pay" rule. The first price is what you actually paid for something. The second is the price you tell your S.O. what you paid for said item. The third is the price you pay when your S.O. finds out what you actually paid for said item.
@@harmweber9848 I haven't literally laughed out loud at a UA-cam comment in a while, friend. Thanks.
I know this this is a joke but why it is called too many bones is because bones are a nickname for dice
😂😂😂😂😂
Fantastic Leigh cameo as "Lo-Fi Dolly Zoom"
She's not being paid enough!
I just decided not to buy this after a LOT of deliberation the other day and I SWEAR TO GOD MAN IF THIS MAKES ME CHANGE MY MIND I WILL BE IRATE.
Please not another "root", where I don't get it, see the review, want it and then can't get it for months.
Edit: ah crap.
mafiacat88 GET ITTTTTTTTT
You guys are the absolutely best writers on UA-cam, let alone board game reviewers. Thank you so much for the content. I rewatch videos just for the laughs
I came across this video randomly and decided to watch because I had played a friend's copy before. Your comment on Tantrum was spot on. I loved playing that character... because I am an accountant.
21:21 Respect for the bone metabolism joke, but I'm gonna have to knock one point off as it's Bisphosphonates
SO CLOSE
the delivery on the splitscreen was so perfect! and pouring milk onto the components really hurt my soul...
Too Many Bones. Brought to you by the new board game designer, Roland Phyte.
I understood that reference!
That was a wonderful and fair review, but it's going to be a while before I can forgive you for the milk.
No use crying over spilled milk...
It's okay, not real milk. Phew!
I am so happy that I got here. By accident. And I saw You, hear your irony, smart thoughts, watch you eat corn flakes with dices. I have never seen review like this before. I will stay, click subscribe and wait for more. Love your sense of humor. Thank you very much for your work. :)
Too Many Bones... So much better than Gloomhaven.
Nice one ;) glad you liked it!
(19/7/19)This is the first board game that can be played when a hurricane and a tsunami occur at the same time.
(24/6/22) Can't believe I wrote this nearly 3 years ago, the world was such a calm place back then. How innocent and unaware we were of what was to come.
haha
Oh man, I'm just getting over a cold, don't make me laugh like that. :)
Made you a cool 100
That review was exactly on point! Quinn's nailed how you feel about buying it, playing it, and moving on from it. I "treated" myself to it a while back, and eventually the load of rules and lack of replay kind of ended the journey for me. I don't regret the experience. But good Lord, instead of fancy components, give me a lower price point and a better rule book. If undertow was around when I purchased the core game, that truly would've been the best decision.
I'm glad Quinns mentioned the initial price problem over the time per dollar problem, because it is worth remembering.
Also, I hope Leigh was compensated for that ridiculously professional dolly shot. Hazard pay at least.
The quality of this game puts it in the category of “finer things”. You got it right when you said that the game is something you’d get to treat yourself or someone else.
Best SU&SD video I've seen in a long time. So much heart. And I would have thought this game was full of gimmicks...but boy do I want this one more than any thematic game I've seen in ages! Hope to bump into you bois in October! :)
This is perfect for your local boardgame cafe.
9:43 Is that a MALAZAN BOI I SPY in that fat stack of goodness? Gr8 decision
Spied that myself. Good shout indeed
I want to pile on here to be excited by Malazan AND Goblin Emperor AND Grace of Kings AND just generally I had to pause and check. Goooooooood boooooooks.
AND Gormenghast AND Assassin's Apprentice AND Fifth Season! Quinns has taste! Shout out to these comments I knew I would find by other fantasy afficianados who paused to read the whole stack. XD
@@Danopian how did I miss those???
Malazan what?
Now this is a review I didn't expect to see! I wonder if Quinns solved the hidden puzzle in the back of the rulebook...
2012 Quinns: "Paper money and cardboard chits feel terrible! Board Games need nicer components!"
2019 Quinns: "Why did the publisher have to make the game bits so nice? It's drives up the cost so much!"
I'm sure there's a balance somewhere. Are there certain components that should be improved on more than others?
There's definitely a balance there - and not a strict binary. I mean, heck, games could come life size, with their own inflatable game rooms, delivered to your door with a cadre of butlers trained to set up the game and teach you how to play, if cost were no object.
I feel (at least on kickstarter) designers are losing ground to marketers when it comes to crafting game components. Different components types are better for different things than others. Wood is not better than cardboard in every circumstance, plastic is not always better than wood, etc. etc.. Each has their function. Optics, tactility, feasibility, all of these things should be considered before you simply 3D model the next wave of components. Good graphical design and a solid sense of practicality goes a long way in making high quality components.
For e.g. Brass Birmingham: non-deluxe game cost me 55 CAD. The game is starkly beautiful, mechanically near-perfect, and graphical/practical design? So, so good. The cardboard coins (while I'm sure some enjoy the deluxified poker chips more) are high quality, visually distinct, and come in different sizes to make stacking and counting them effortless and so satisfying. I have no qualms about saying that Brass Birmingham is one of the most beautiful games I own. And it came at the price of the nations dice game. That's quality component design!
I think its not just that the pieces are higher quality but that they are expensive in ways that don't make sense.
Why plastic cards instead of high quality linen textured cards like other premium games have?
Why poker chips instead of cards, which would be cheaper and more readable, or figures which would make the cost more justifiable?
Exactly who is asking for neoprene player boards and plastic reference sheets?
The middle ground is Gloomhaven. The price is so high because of the sheer amount of stuff you get in the box. The components are exactly as sturdy as they need to be.
Even Kingdom Dork has no plastic cards, no specially printed card boxes for cards, or plastic boxes for individual tokens. And that games's 400 a pop!
There definitely is a balance, and this level of indestructibleness isn't it, in my opinion.
yungdresscode but then you get the problem that it is impossible to organize without throwing money at Broken Token. Too Many Bones also has one of the best inserts and sets of dice trays around.
You guys sponsored by Waitrose now? Excellent product placement.
The fast that Quinns shops at Waitrose is the least surprising news ever. The second least surprising thing is that he doesn’t sully himself with cows milk.
The sultanas and fake milk has tarnished the magic of "shut up and sit down" for me. The 4th wall has been breached, the curtain has been lifted, the lustre has been de-lustre'ed
Well, I guess I can give Too Many Bones a miss, but you've convinced me that I need some Waitrose Essentials Wholegrain Sultana Bran!
The enthusiasm for the character sheet makes me very interested in seeing him review the Crusader Kings game one day
Leigh! Omg, that made me spit my coffee twice. So flipping good!
Patches, huh? Does he also kick his allies near holes and cliffs?
I see that copy of Gardens of the Moon. Truly a man of taste.
When he mentioned fantasy, I started looking for it. Wasn't disappointed :)
Ooh, I hadn't heard of this before, thank you! Just added it to my library wishlist. :D
Never thought I'd say this, but is seems like this would have been better as a collectable game; buy the gearlocks you want, collect individual encounters, perhaps even (gasp) random loot, skills and bad guys-containing boosters. All in sensibly-priced high quality cardboard of course.
I--surely like many, many others--just about died at the Brief Aside zoom.
Worst review of all time. Never have I watched a review and had to instantly purchase the item being reviewed, even before the end of the review. This is going to be great, but cost me a Benjamin and then some. Thanks for nothing. (comments are meant in jest and are not to be taken seriously)
That zoom just killed me. I laughed hard enough my partner decided to see whether I'm alright.
Yeehaw
The algorithm sent me here at 12:54 AM after Halloween and I watched the whole thing.
New pad AND shopping at Waitrose? Someone's doing alright for himself.
Waitrose essential? Yeah making it rain.
This review was hilarious and probably my favorite one so far. And I just want to say that I appreciate how you guys always leave the negative comments for the end, because I get so excited and I'm about to jump on the internet and order it and I already have excuses sprinting through my head to tell my wife about why I needed another $130 dollar game even though I play warhammer and video games and why she doesn't need to kick me out cuz I can just sell our car or a kid and then you guys tell me why I should hold off.... And I can take a deep breath. I really should stop watching these videos...
"it's like Lord of the rings, except instead of protecting the ringbearer, you're protecting somebody who spends the whole adventure planning a controlled demolition of the enemy"
I see what you did there 👀
This game is one of the most fantastic board game I've ever played, and I will never be able to buy it. Such a shame.
One thing that I can’t help but feel is that Chip Theory should keep the quality of the game as is, but simply cut back on some of the unnecessary packaging. They could really make the expansion boxes much smaller without changing the actual components
David Giusti The boxes are that size as they come with reference sheets as well.
You guys are always so hilarious and talented, keep up the good work!!!
Thumbs up for the Leigh cameo.
Frankly, it's been too long.
I like high quality games and I like many things about Too Many Bones. I like the neoprene mats, I like the dice, I like the idea of customizing your character with dice rolls and dice placement, and so on...
But there are two things i absolutley don't like:
- the whole poker chips thing. I mean, a stack of poker chips is no enemy or character in my eyes.
- the "gameboard". A 4x4 tic tac toe field? Really? This is the best idea they came up with.
I mean it is such a innovative game. But these two choices seem so bad to me. If they would have given the game a nice looking fantasy themed gameboard and some nice miniatures as characters and enemies I would instantly go All-In.
But for me, this two points are enough to not even think about paying this much for Too Many Bones.
this game is sold for €244,-, i am still not convinced why i should pay that much for a game worth 5x great normal games or 2x Gloomhaven
Just buy a clank, a fast playing dirt cheap dungeon crawler
I really really like that they characters are not just rinse and repeat trope-types. Really cool.
Why did ‘A Brief Aside” never become a regular feature?
That was so hilarious!
Heh. This looks cool, maybe ill grab it. *£250 on ebay* awwwww man.

Nice to see that you went with the premium health chips!
This game is so much fun! Playing a character again and again is an exploration. And then, trying a new character is also wonderful new discovery. The price is steep, but I really enjoy it!
So, if you want to play too many bones you should instead find someone who owns too many bones and befriend them?
The cereal part made me really uncomfortable... How could you let your branflakes get soggy like that??
Sounded like a great game until i saw the price (12/2019) at $249.99. NooOOOOooOOO poop ($129.95 at Chip Theory Games) Ugh
Just too say - Undertow can be played (and should be played) with four gearlocs - just only has two in the box...
Good to know!
Which two extra characters would you buy for Undertow, if you were to recommend some?
The core rules is easy to learn. But remembering what all 200 dices do and all other keywords? Naaah. Sold it!
Absolutely fantastic game, I play it 2 player. You think the neoprene and the chips and the plastic cards were overproduced?...oh boy, wait till you see Cloudspire.
Funniest review I've ever seen! I click 10 times like button, or 11? Can't remember.
Still think the best production for price is Mechs vs Minions. ridiculous quality for $75
While that's absolutely true, Riot games is like a billion dollar company who admits to taking a colossal loss on MvM. Chip Theory is a very small publishing house who will never be able to do something like that and stay in business.
I bought Too Many Bones to play solo.
And what a massive disappointment it was. I'm still looking to unload it. The encounter cards for the solo game number (from memory) 10, so replayability isn't really there.
But the biggest trouble is that all the rules, dice, gadgets, etc are just to set up a fight on a 6 by 4, totally featureless, board. I did not like this at all. Imagine playing noughts and crosses (tic tac toe?) with 200 rules and you've got it.
This game is actually not complicated at all once you get the hang of it. But the game is much more balanced with 4 Gearlocs, if you only attempted to play with one then I feel sorry for you.
"Every new day, means new rules.
"Did you unlock some treasure? More like unlockin' some ruuules.
"Are ya fightin' a Boss? More like, you're fightin' some ruules."
The price point is a valid argument but I’m personally glad that CTG choose high quality components. I’m quite the maniac when it comes to game components spending extra money pimping boxes with foam core or wood inserts, sleeving my cards, etc... With a CTG game, I don’t need to do/buy anything more. Plastic cards don’t need sleeve. The box layout is optimized to bring everything on the table ASAP. As for chips and neoprene mat, tactile experience is an important aspect of a board game to me.
Glad you're safer with water nowadays, no more walking into a canal
Just got a 200 bucks gift card for my 40th birthday, instantly bought this game.
I used Boomer to one shot the tirent in my first play through.
My mom got this for me, and I can confirm it does indeed make a lovely birthday present!
I find myself lately drawn to premium game components. Recently spent $100 on custom components for Eldritch Horror on Etsy. At the same time, maybe the publisher might want to consider this a "deluxe" version and maybe offer something with a lower price point?
"If we can get Boomer knocked unconscious, we can send her bursting back to life! With drugs! Allowing her to detonate an owlbear before it took flight."
That may be my favorite description of a turn in a board game of all time. HOW AM I ONLY KNOW FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS DELICIOUSLY INSANE GAME?!
Australia question, is it all waterproof? Can it be played in a pool?
It is. It's all chips, neoprene mats, and PVC cards/player aids. The only exception would be the box.
@@DanielLicata oh my god. Our pool/gaming problems are solved!
Literally just ordered this game today. I think the review was very fair and I don't regret the purchase at all. Definitely something my wife and I are treating ourselves to, where we got the Core game and Undertow expansion which should give quite a bit of content especially with 6 characters to play. Very expensive yes, but I think we are going to get a lot of mileage out of it since we both love RPGs but when only two of us are playing, hard to do GM + Single player, this way we can work together and go on an adventure.
wife and I have spent hours upon hour playing this. such an excellent co-op! no regrets at all :)
22:42 - Lol, I just can't stop laughing
That Double Quinns was completely out of the blue and unexpected. If I had been drinking milk, it would have shot out my nose.
Really nice and fun review. Helpful for my buying decision. Much appreciated. I just hope you pay the stage hand well.
I’m not sure I would like this game but I sure do love this review, I come here every few months to watch Quinn’s excitement and frustration with this plastic extravaganza.
1. The way you handle your board games drives me nuts but I love it for these reviews lol
2. The con section at the end I find extremely helpful. After the excellent praise, it’s refreshing to hear legitimate criticism.
3. Very happy to have stumbled on your channel. Good show!
Honestly the Mouse Pads look super luxury but should probably be an optional addon like plastic tokens and 3D doors for Zombicide to replace the cardboard pieces.
Something to bling out your game if you love it that much. Same with the rest of the wildly overproduced components in this game.
It just raises the cost to a game that I'm sure is fun, but not worth the price of entry for most people on a budget. You would basically have to know you love it and want to go balls deep on addons right out of the gate.
Perfect comparison: Spirit Island is super fantastic amazing (please review it) and has the quality components where it counts and finds more economical solutions elsewhere. You can buy a Mousepad style gameboard if you want. Its pricey, BUT its optional.
I bought myself this game after working overtime on the weekend... So perfect conclusion haha
Sounds a lot like a dice version of Mage Knight.
I actually have a bit of a bone to pick with this review... I bought too many bones and dropped a chip in a glass full of water to impress my friend. It was indeed waterproof! However I used a spoon to scoop it out and in doing so I actually put a dent in the chip with a spoon. Why didn't you mention that Too Many Bones isn't spoon proof? I see you have the game in a cereal bowl but cleverly avoided having the spoon interact with the game. This seems deceptive. I guess the real question is... how much did Chip Theory have to pay you to not mention this massive flaw?
So are you saying TMB is the Waitrose of board games?
I own TMB and have the same number of plays (6) in and agree almost 100% with SU&SD (Quinns).
Wow, you convinced me buying this epic game.
Hey! I too have unusual levels of moisture! This is clearly the game review channel for me.
Superb review with a few touches of humor!!! I like this game and this video has all the details untouched. You just got a new subscriber! 🤩
Bar none the best tactical adventure/rpg board game out there. Spot on about the combat. It can be hard as balls.
Most fun adventure board game I have! Worth every penny! And my savings... And my house... But honestly so good!
A bit of Scorcese (well Hitchcock should be mentioned I guess, but come on, that Scorcese's Dolly Zoom was wonderful, and better than Spielberg's one, oh Lord, a shark!), a few drops of milk and water, and some tea leaves in a beautifully too expensive piece of plastic later, I think that's probably one of your best reviews so far!
finally a board game that i really,,, REALLY like! I watch all of your videos. some i watch multiple times to decide if i wanna buy the game or not. in fact, because of you guys, i bought Xia legends of a drift system for THREE HUNDRED BUCKS but it's totally worth it and it will get here in 2 days :)... i'm ordering this one too... 100% as soon as this video is over i'm buying it. also, please do us all a solid favor. no matter how good the game is, don't review discontinued or out of print games so we don't have to sell half our house just to buy it lol. Thanks Quinn and the rest of the SUSD team!~!~!~!~!
I can't imagine being a board game publisher and selling anything at the price point where you can just buy twilight imperium instead
I thought this was that game where you have a set of tweezers and proceed to extract bones from inside a red nozed fellar.
Great review, I love the way you spend a lot of your time to make it entertaining (i.e., not just a monologue commentary).
anyone else cringe when he folder the rulebook at 00:35?
