    I am an expert at picking melons. I pick 3 a week. I tap them, look for yellow bellies, look at the stem, and then most importantly pray it is sweet because I have no idea what I’m doing. The praying does help.

      The truth is that all the typical signs can be there, but if the farm watered too much or it rained a lot near harvest, it all goes out the window.

    Good advice! Please remind folks to thoroughly wash their melons; a knife will put that outside junk right onto your slices.

    Suggestion: How about a more scientific comparison: Assess 3 watermelons of same variety and roughly same size, but different "belly spot" and/or weight. Show the 3 recorded sounds (using some kind of standard thumping method), so we can hear the difference. Then, after deciding which we think will taste best, have someone extract 3 "blind" samples (you/we can't see which melon they came from), show how the flesh looks, and have 2 or three taste-testers rank them _without_ knowing which melon they came from. All love and gratitude to your cute 4-year-old tester, but most kids will love a watermelon almost regardless, particularly with nothing at hand to compare it to. Thanks!

      Thank you for the suggestion! It is coming. We have been filming footage for the 2.0 version of this video. Just waiting for 2 things -- out melons here on the farm to go into blossom, and our local farmer's market to start having watermelons. Keep checking back for the new one. Thanks for commenting!

      The thump comparison is exactly what I was wishing had been done when I watched this. I never know what a bad thump sounds like to understand what a good thump would be. Before ever researching online I had used my common sense about the yellow spot meaning it had been sitting out in the field a while. Before that when I was just choosing randomly I got a lot of bad watermelons. Also, when it is Spring/early Summer I try and get the ones that are from South America because I know the ones up here are likely not ripe enough yet at that time of year.

    Good video, worthy of the upvote. It could get even better by giving more emphasis to the sound, which is the hardest to judge, and compare it to that of an unripe and also an overripe melon.

    I've always looked to the sound as the main indicator of ripeness. I set it on my shoulder, with my ear against the melon and thump the melon. It should sound reminiscent to the sound I get thumping my head.

      "Pollination Points" is an urban myth. This is such a good question that you have given me inspiration for another video. There is a LOT I can say about that, but the best way would be to show you why with a physical melon. Keep an eye out for this in a couple weeks when my watermelons start flowering. 😉🍉

  • @TheManFromKansas
    @TheManFromKansas 11 місяців тому

    Good advice, but there is some mis-information in this video, the brown stem is a must have, the thumping on the melon has absolutely no bearing on the melon taste, it's one of the biggest watermelon myth's out. the yellow belly is 100 % correct. goood video though.

  • @davidwest2917
    @davidwest2917 Рік тому +4

    You are the first one I have seen on you tube that actually knows what you are talking about.....the grocery stores tend to cut the brown stems off because usually that says the Mellon has been picked for a while and is probably over ripe....not good...if the stem is very green it was not ripened on the vine ...was pulled early but will ripen in a little while but will not have the full sweet taste that a vine ripend melon should have...you want some green in the stem...you are right on !! Good job!🇺🇲🙂😉

    I'm more confused than ever! The last 10 watermelon's I have bought have had no flavor at all! I STILL can't pick one out, because everyone has a different opinion!

    • @MertieMae
      @MertieMae  11 місяців тому

      Sadly there is a lot of misinformation out there. I was just on Facebook last night, and saw a graphic similar to the one I have as the photo for this video. (It is reposted on my Mertie Mae's FB page if you are interested in seeing what I did to it.)
      While there are some that joke about everyone having a different opinion, most people that post don't know what they are talking about. "Look for webbing -- it is where the sugar is leaking out through the pollination points." Let's think about that for a moment... were that true, don't you think that would attract some bugs that like sweet things?
      I could say a lot more, but no one needs a novel here. I am so sorry that you have not found a good one! Have you been buying them at the grocery store? Due to unusual weather in the southern U.S., the watermelons that have come in so far here to my grocery stores in Wisconsin have been poor. Depending on where you live, opt for a farmer's market -- fresh picked instead of having a southern melon that is picked under ripe with the thought that it will ripen once it is shipped.
      We are in the process of filming a 2.0 version of this video to include some of the "keys" listed in other videos that are misnomer, detail with physical proof why what I suggest is accurate, and more. Keep your eyes peeled for it.
      Thanks for commenting and watching!

    • @MertieMae
      @MertieMae  11 місяців тому +3

      This seems to be quite common this summer. I was trying to film the "2.0" version of watermelon selection a few weeks ago at a local store, and we stopped filming because of rotting melons. Nothing like going along to knock on one with your finger to only knock your finger right through the rind into a pit of red, foul-smelling mush. 🤢🤮 Hopefully once the melons from the middle and northern states come in, the quality will be better. The weather in the south where watermelons are currently being harvested has been unusually cool, and it is contributing to the quality issues. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😁❤️
