Sorry my review for the movie will be late. I really wanted to get this video out first. Here I explain how Mattel rewrote toy history to put Barbie on top. Barbie was not only not the first fashion doll, she was pretty late to market and a pretty blatant copy of another doll. So here I go over the unsung women of doll history, some of the dolls that predated Barbie and what Bild Lilli actually was.

Just wanted to clarify at the end when I'm talking about Bild Lilli I misspoke about the toy company name. Bild is the newspaper that published the Lilli comics but they contracted a toy company called Hauser to make the dolls themselves. The dolls all had Bild on the stands so I misunderstood that Bild wasn't actually the one manufacturing them. Hauser is the company that was crushed by Mattel and gave the quote at 20:14 but Bild themselves were able to continue on without Lilli. Sorry for the oversight. Hope this helps clear things up. Sorry again for the confusion.

Age 10, back in 1960, I had one of the first Barbie dolls. She had black hair, bobbed and a distant, rather cold calculating look to her face. I turned her into 'French Resistance Barbie' who took down Nazis! She would blow up my brother's military game sites, for example. She was lots of fun. Then they made barbie a blonde with a goofy smile. YUCK. She is still goofy.

As a vintage doll collector, this is nothing new to me, but thanks for sharing all the same. I too get tired of the myth that Lilli represented a literal sex worker which silly click-bait articles love to repeat. Doll history is very nuanced, way more complex than "all baby dolls before 1959". To be fair to Mattel, as beautiful and popular as Little Miss Revlon and Cissy were, they still looked more childlike than Lilli and Barbie. Baby dolls were by no means the only dolls available, but they were very popular, so if you asked the average person in the 1950s what they pictured when they heard the word "doll", they probably would say baby or toddler doll.

Smearing Lilli and everything about her really wasn't necessary for everything after they already made Barbie a knockoff version of her and made big cash with her...

A few of their lines were: Wizard of Oz inspired, Disney inspired, and fairytale inspired with dolls like Rapunzel. You get the gist. These were my favorite dolls to have aside from Barbie.

That’s what I usually think, plus it’s also probably basic biology.
Kids are of course way too young to fully understand the “birds and the bees” of life, but they do have certain ideas and behaviors encoded in them.
Boys naturally are more rambunctious, prefer rough and tussle play, and have a tendency to look up and admire their icons. That’s why they don’t tend to care much about “seeing” themselves in their heroes or characters, as it’s ultimately the journey of discovery and end goal they care about.
Girls are naturally more subdue, don’t rough house as much, and like to put themselves in situations and think through the events. They are alright with following along the journey, but they latch on a lot to characters or scenarios that speak to them and thus want to “be” the hero or character they see.
Nothing bad one way or the other and of course there are exceptions, but people really meed to stop acting like boys and girls don’t have natural tendencies even when they’re young. Baby dolls appeal to a girl’s nurturing nature and action figures appeal to a boy’s rough housing nature. It’s also why boy’s toys are usually more durable than girl’s toys, the little buggers are way more likely to smash, crash, and break their stuff than girls.

    Great video. Thanks a lot.
The story behind Lilli resp. Bild-Lilli is really interesting. As said it was based on a comic strip from the popular german Bild-tabloid newspaper, depicting a young, sassy office employee that had the occasional relationship with different older men. Initially the dolls were made as some kind of early form of merchandise for the comic strip and they were aimed at the newspapers target audience (mostly german adult males). So they were intially only sold at newspaper stands and tobacco stores. However, the doll became popular among girls quite fast, so the range was unsurprisingly expanded with additional clothes and larger accessories (a dollhouse for example) from third party companies. Apparently, there were even some cheap copies form China floating around at the time.
Enter Ruth Handler and Mattel. The former found the Lilli-doll on a trip to Europe in 1956 and more or less copied her to make the Barbie doll (Lillis success in Germany might have had an influence, i think). Barbie was released in 1959 in the US and was an immediate succes. The rest is more or less history. Mattel finally bought the rights to Lilli in 1964 and basically discontinued the range immediatly.
Framing the Lilli doll as being based on a comic strip about an escort girl is a blatant lie, however and dosent do the "mother of Barbie" justice imo.
a small side note: Bild never acually produced the doll, this was done by the mentioned german toy company named Hauser via a contract, which was oviously revoked when Bild sold the rights to Mattel. Bild was actually not a small company in germany in 1964, but i would thnik that they simply were not that interested in fighting this out and took the money from Matell instead. The toy company apparantly did not recover from this though.
