Function of connective tissue (most abundant tissue in the body)
1. Binding and supporting
2. Protecting
3. Insulating
4. Storing reserve fluid and energy
5. Transporting substances within the body
6. Movement
Types of Connective tissue
• Proper connective
◦ Fat - provide insulation and fuel storage
• Cartilage connective
◦ Most - avascular (no blood vessels)
• Bone connective
• Blood connective
◦ Transportation
Characteristic of Connective tissue
• They are all develop in the same origin - Mesenchyme - loose and fluid embryonic tissue
• Different degree of vascularity and blood flow
• All connective tissues are mostly composed of nonliving material - extracellular matrix
Extracellular matrix components
1. Ground substance -
- A watery, rubbery unstructured material that fills in the spaces between cells and protect cell from their surrounding
- Flexible, made of starch and protein molecules mixed with water
- Proteoglycans (protein) from each sprouts lots and lots of long, starchy strands called Glycosminoglygans (GAGs) radiating out from those protein.
- It clumps together to trap water
2. Fibers
- Provides support and structure to the shapeless ground substances
Types of fibres
• Collagen fibers (protein)
◦ Strongest and most abundant type of fibre
• Elastic fibers
◦ Long thin, a branding framework within the matrix
◦ made out of protein elastic
‣ Allow to stretch and coil
◦ Find in skin, lungs and vessel wall
• Reticular fibers
◦ Short, finer collagen fibres
◦ With glycoprotein
◦ Form sponge like-networks that cradle and support
Immature cell are called blast
• Means forming
• Stem cells still dividing and replicate themselves
• Function: to secrete the ground substance and fibres that form its unique matrix
Types of immature cells (blast --> cytes)
• Chondroblasts - the blast cell of cartilage
• Osteoblast - the blast cells of bone tissue
• After blast they develop into cytes, but cytes can go back to blast, if they need to repair or generate a new matrix
PS: Thank you for all the thank you sss ~ btw I find it hard to watch the whole video RIGHT before an exam, that's why I "copy and paste" it. I hope it helps :)
Thankyou for writing this. Doesnt seem like a brain explosion now
Me Myself & I you are the hero we needed but don't deserved omg.
GOD BLESS YOU
You’re the best

Fun strategy I've been using to maximize retention from these videos: Try watching it with the sound off and explaining the concepts out loud yourself. You'll quickly figure out what you need to revisit!
Genius
It's gonna help you in the concept and boosts your presentation skills
I'm learning more from this guy than from my actual A&P prof
SAME
i guess it is why we are here....................
Same here
STORY OF MY LIFE
You know this educational method is revolutionary when you see yourself watching these videos and learning just for fun.
Acting immature is a total blast!
This is exactly how I prepared for my exam.
Blasting such a joke, how immature..
... XD
Are you sure? why not met mature and cyte your sources
🤣🤣🤣
The most amazing thing about Flo Hyman is that the fact that her name was "Flo Hyman" wasn't the weirdest thing about her.
But does Flo Hyman wear size 13 in Nike's....MENS?
Didn't think so.
So I suffer from EDS - which is a mutation of collagen in connective tissue - AND I SWEAR I HAVE NEVER KNOWN MORE ABOUT WHY MY BODY SUCKS AT BEING A BODY THAN I DO NOW, THANK YOU
I also have EDS, my body regularly fails at being a body :p
me too!
Really, what type do you have?
type 3
I have mild marfans syndrome, just enough to be recognisable, but thankfully i don't have the heart degredation that is the lethal part of the condition. And thankfully that since Flo Hyman, being able to detect issues in the heart has come a long way and when i got tested for marfans i got the news that i had NO heart mumour, which is an indication that the heart isn't acting properly, such as when marfans causes a degredation of the supporting tissues. So i am lucky, and also lucky that i am not a very active person to begin with and can't endure long periods of activity that would inflame existing heart problems.
As someone who suffers from Ehlers danlos syndrome (a mutation in the collagen in the body) with Marfanic tendencies, as well as an aspiring medical physicist, I was waiting for you to do a connective tissue crash course. This video will make it a lot easier to explain to people who do not know the extensive functions of connective tissue. Thankyou very much Hank, very helpful.

All that I can think of while watching this is...
I want that Angler Fish Plushie.
Wish granted! store.dftba.com/products/hanklerfish-plushie
Matthew Prorok HOLY SHIT YESS
Hopefully I have not sent you down the rabbit hole of dftba.com. Because you can also buy Crash Course DVDs, and a Crash Course Chemistry periodic table, and much more.
It's a Hanklerfish! (You can find one on DFTBA.com )
after reading this comment I thought that fking commenter
I've never heard someone talking about Marfan Syndrome on UA-cam, or even outside of my fraternity. So excited that you've helped others learn about it!
I'm a med student in italy, and in febraury i'm taking histology exam... your videos really helps me through my study, so, once again, thanks Hank for your awesome job! :)
Thank you for talking about Marfans! I have EDS but it's so exciting to see either getting awareness, especially with so much other helpful info :)
When you said Flo Hymen, I thought you were trolling me... turns out she actually IS a real person...
I dread to think what kind of teasing she had to endure as a little girl. But then... Olympic Silver Medal, BOOYAH! She wins.
"Hymen" is something very different from "Hyman"....
KouhaiSempai Only when you write it.
Robert Éiva True...true...
Lincoln Maurice I would seriously contest you on that "most people" remark. Maybe most people in your circle, but not most people.
you should make online college course that award credits
I am so happy Marfan syndrome is getting some recognition. My mom was not diagnosed with it until she was 18 and my grandpa was not diagnosed till 45. It's crazy.
I can't help but notice that every time he gestures wildly the plush toy wobbles
Leela D. I want to get one :)
+Jack santilli Thanks! I just ordered one:)

"9 years later she made it to the 1984 Olympics"
Me: yay I feel confident in myself!
"she collapsed and died during the game"
Me: Well... Shit
Well, she did get another 2 years out of life before she died.
Idk why I find anatomy so fascinating love this series
I am in A&P I, taking my first test tomorrow. These videos are great study guides to go along with my textbook, notes, homework and quizzes. You guys are great!
I'm a first year nursing student and this is a brilliant way to get started on some of the concepts i'll be learning about. Very tasteful balance between light hearted and informative. great stuff.
My uncle had an aortic rupture. Surprisingly, and thanks to his wife giving the ambulance driver accurate directions to the hospital so as not to be stuck in traffic and the skill of a top-notch surgeon, he survived. It was touch and go throughout the night. I felt that I had Schroedinger's uncle, existing in two states, alive and dead at the same time. I didn't want to check my phone for fear that the news would be bad. Thankfully, he is still with us. When the doctor said that he could start swallowing clear liquids, he was hear to murmur, "Vodka is a clear liquid."
Tessa T I’m gonna stop you 4 years later and say his wife giving directions to the ambulance driver had nothing to do with his outcome
Actually it did. If they were to have been caught in traffic, the uncle could have bled out right then and there. But since they got there quickly, they were able to repair the tear so that he wouldn’t die.
you forgot the other way that it's like jello: jello is made from gelatin which is basically just collagen extracted from skin and bone tissues.
I met a girl whose grandfather invented Jell-O. He used horses' hooves to make it.
Wooo connective tissue disorders! I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which basically means my collagen is screwed. Chronic pain and exceedingly loose joints, oh my! (and a whole host of other problems because, as Hank said... Connective tissue is EVERYWHERE)
EDS type three here!
There are literally dozens of us! ;)
EDS BUDDIES!!!!!!!!!!
I have EDS too! Do you also have autonomic dysfunction?
hello !!!!!
hey, I just wanted to say I really love your videos. Whether it be something I need to know for a class, or just sheer curiosity, I can count on your videos. I want to become a personal trainer with a little more knowledge of the human body than the average trainer, and it's great to watch your anatomy videos in my spare time to grasp the concepts before I even take a class on them. Thank you so much for what you do!
I love Hank!! You got me through A&P I and II with all A's on my tests!
P S are these videos all the material that was covered on tissues in your anatomy and philosophy 1 class?
I'm hoping these videos will do the same for me!!
Please provide the measurements in the metric system as well, about 96.5% of the world uses this, undoubtably better measuring system. I would argue that's enough people for it to make sense.
Google does conversions. If you don't understand a unit, google it. That's what I do.
2.5 centimeters = roughly 1 inch
Meg Ashley Even if you understand a units conversion having to consistantly recalculate every measurement given is rather tiresome and distracts from the point being made
BeinDraug But it isn't exactly hard to do. He's an American, he uses the same units as most Americans, it's just how it is and you deal.
It's like complaining about a server setting down your drink just far enough that you have to reach to get it. Yes it is inconvenient, but you'd have to be a real jerk to make a big deal about it when you can fix it more easily than complain.
Normally I would agree with you because what you said is accurate, but there is something to be said for the purpose of CrashCourse videos. The videos are made by Americans, the target audience is very clearly American high school students, probably in Advanced Placement classes, and they do have a focus on keeping videos relatively short (as compared to a typical lesson in school at least). So while it does make sense to use metric units, especially in a more scientific field, there is something of a reason as to why they're not.
To the creators of Crash Course A&P, thank you so much for making the very challenging subjects such as the "Tissues" alive and fun. I'm studying for the certification exams to be a medical interpreter and we have to know an incredible amount of medical specialties. Continue on please with your inspiring videos:)
That macrophage animation was horrifying. Did you have to make little Hank scream so much?!
There are no accidents
-Master Oogway
That Macrophage vs. Hank animation was like the cutest thing I've seen all day,,
So glad i came across this channel because I'm loving these crash courses!!
I'm currently taking an anatomy and physiology class and it's by far my favorite this year. I hope you continue this series! It could help out a lot with future lab practicals.
This is awesome, so far I have only really focused on organ systems and cell biology. Learning about connective tissue is awesome :D.
info for 95% of world population:
6' = 182 cm
6'5'' = 195 cm
This is my favourite Crash Course series so far! Keep up the good work Hank and the team :D
I am so super grateful for this guy he gives me a much better understanding :)
So people with Marfan Syndrome can have a glitch in the Matrix
If CrashCourse made infographics for every episode, it would make studying easier because I am a visual learner and I wouldn't have to read my poorly handwritten notes. I know it would take a lot of time but I know a lot of people would appreciate it.
These crash course videos are awesome...keep up the good work!!!
Thank you so much! Connective tissue finally makes sense
Love it how there are still awesome educational videos out there! Thanks CrashCourse! :D
you have no idea how amazing this is you guys are helping my pass my classes so much
I have a biology test coming up on thursday and I only started studying now because I am a procrastinatory idiot and I just want to thank you so much for this series of videos! I am now partially saved :)
Have you ever been told that you talk like you're hyped up on caffeine :P That being said you're my favorite "CrashCourser" , never slow down
My grandmother tore her aorta walking down the street about 10 years ago. She had a very low rate to survive but thankfully she made it. Was interesting to hear you talk about it.
I love your lessons. Share them with all my students. Thank you :)
"Hwaaaaaaat" @ 2:42
Hank Green, you're awesome.
I like that I learn a lot from these videos but still get a good laugh in too!
Easily one of the scariest and awesomeist Crash Course seasons!
Could you do a crash course Ethics and Philosophy? Every time I think of my exams coming up I cry a little inside. :P
You know you could always study by yourself. You can do that. Just saying.
Geekminer Oh yeah, because I never thought of that -_-
These videos are impossible to revise of on there own, but with the way they're presented and structured its a nice way to reinforce what you know, That's especially useful when it comes to revision; I can watch I video to jog my memory, then if I'm struggling or just not as good I would like, I'll read up on it/practice exam questions etc.
*****
But relying on these videos for revision isn't really the best way to revise right? I mean what if they never make these videos? What are you going to do then? I know these videos are made for revision but you shouldn't rely on them too heavily.
Geekminer I wasn't relying too much on these. "What if they never make these videos", well they haven't on my any subject other than History, what do you think I do? Go home, and sit waiting for a revision video to be uploaded? No. These, like I've said are just additional bits, they by no means make up even a fraction of my actual revision. It's just nice for a little bit on the side to help it set in.
You're taking this very seriously, the original comment was half joking, half serous btw.
*****
Well good luck on your test/exam.
why is the guy in these videos so handsome?! videos are very informative and easy to follow!!!
thank you for including toc
These videos are the best videos about biology I've ever seen! It's much more better than boring lessons at my school.
Exam on tissues tomorrow!! Perfect timing thank you thank you thank you
These videos are so good for visual learners like me.. thank you so much
It is so clear, make me feel I want to learn more. Thank you!!!
thank u Hank green for teaching me more than my anatomy teacher ever did
You guys have the cutest animations.
"Aguwaa" Hank Green, January 26, 2015
😂😂😂
At first sight studying human anatomy seems to bo extremely complicated. It is tru?e that it's complex and your studies will not change that. As for it being overwhelming, this can be solved if you take it one step at a time. I discovered an article on Sebs Study Crammer very useful for this.
I thought I was going to fail Biology II and then I found this channel! Thanks so much for these videos!
sø I guess yøu cøuld say the girl at the beginning had a tear in her heart
This is by far the best comment I have ever read

MY TASTE IN MUSIC IS YOUR FACE!
Love your explanation and how fast it is💖
So much fun, and informative.
very clear, and easy to understand! thank you!
this episode is so chaotic i love it omg
Its too funny when Hank says WHAAA! like that cracks me up every time, lol,,,
ahaha! i loved the scene in which Hank is eaten!
this was a really fun video, and easy to understand. thank you
I have a related disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Its a lot like Marfans. I know a lot about how my body is affected by my connective tissue disorder, but this was very helpful in explaining more about which of my systems are affected. Thanks Crash Course. There arent many physicians on my medical team that understand my condition that well, so this was helpful in learning about myself.
When seeing a new doctor about my eds I often feel like I end up explaining things to them instead of the other way around. Often I am their first patient with it.
Yeah, Of all the doctors I have seen in recent years, maybe three knew of it, and only one PT knew how to help me. like, okay.
I love the sense of humor that is brought to CrashCourse videos; y'all are killing me here! XD
I love and appreciate this show. Thank You
You are a wonderful person in the full sense of the word. I think I did not understand this topic for the rest of my life. I sat for
several months trying to understand the topic, but I finally understood it.

these vids are SAVING ME thank u so so so sosoosososososoo much
i have my first anatomy exam tomorrow!! these videos are great study material
Thankyousomuch for this wonderful and powerful video!
"you have four types of connective tissue"
holds up 3 fingers
holds up 1 on the other hand
*saved*
Crash Course is the best thing that ever happened to me.
I'd love to see a Crash Course series on sociology.
I love this! Thanks hank! ^.^ so helpful
This man is helping me through Nursing school
"You've got 4 *holds up 3 fingers* *adds another on other hand* major classes of connective tissue" same buddy
These videos are great! Keep 'em up! Thank you :)
I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW AWESOME THESE VIDEOS ARE - SUFFICE IT TO SAY THAT THEY'RE SO INTERESTING AND AMAZING THAT I NOW WANT TO BE A DOCTOR 😍
Can't wait till you guys make a Pathologic topic! ^_^ these physiology playlist is LIFE!! so great!! thanks!!!!!!!!
keep up the good work i watch all your episodes at work, I play it in the background
Thank you soo much sir.. lots of love from india 🇮🇳
Come on Hank, I need more video's of this serie a week. You're behind on my professor and I need your handy little summarization before my exams start! i_i
this sooooo helpful hank
I learned something from this which I wasn't expecting since my A&P teacher was pretty exhaustive on tissues I thought. But no. I learned stuff!!
2:33 i need a 10 hour video of this
Thank goodness for these videos!!!!!!! XO!!!!!!
So I lost concentration when he said "Elastic" and "like rubber band" I started singing sia immediately 😂
I replayed the "Whaaa?" part and he sounded like an ambulance. XD
Thanks for the entertaining breakdown. Our lab teach suggested we check out your page and it's helping me wrap my brain around the tissues so much better than just looking at slides in lab.
I was wondering if you guys could also cover some of the other connective tissue disorders. I have joint hypermobility syndrome, which is thought by some experts to be the same as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Both disorders seem to result from a mutation to one or more of the many types of collagens. I love this series and keep up the great work!!
This whole UA-cam page is great
I love u guys for uploading this new section of crash course AS i am taking the class
Your videos are so helpful
