- Human reproduction is complicated and important, and it's going to take a four-part series for us to cover it. Today, we're kicking that off with the female reproductive system, starting with how sex hormones affect oogenesis and ovulation, continuing through how the ovarian and menstrual cycles mature and release oocytes, and creating a comfy uterine environment for a fertilized egg.

You know, there are these things called "books", that people have used in former times to beg for wisdom by the gods, it's not that long ago that this was done, so some people knowing of this ritual technique may still be alive .. you could also have used this method

+Frank Schneider you make a valid point, but when you're a twelve y/o girl your mom already makes awkward conversations about puberty. Could you imagine asking her to buy you books on it? Or go to the library? Most of the books aimed at teens for pms are titled things like "EXPLORING YOUR CHANGING BODY," which is mortifying to read.

You can get pretty much all of the basics from every introductory textbook on physiology. I mean I get your point, but if someone wants to know about a topic and doesn't look it up, that's highly irrational. Staying unknowledgeable just because of fuzzy emotions is imho a behavior that can not and should not be justified.
+Frank Schneider Chances are she attempted to do her own research on the matter and then turned to doctors for more in depth answers because she didn't fully understand. Nothing about that seems irrational when you consider that while yes, books are there for our own personal development, there are people who are deemed professionals and experts in their respective fields and it would be illogical to not seek them out because you've found a couple of books related to the topic in your local library and think that means you've now got all you need to solve the problem.
Could you do a video on disorders of the female reproductive system, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and premature ovarian failure?

I love this guy and the videos! they are so concrete, fun to watch, entertaining and so educational! it's so much better than spend a whole semester learning about anatomy. Also, some people are a little inmature when it comes to sex or genitalia (including me, OMG that eggplant LOL); the way these topics are presented here are completely accurate, scientific with the actual terms and professional, BRAVO!

This is perfect timing. My current biology unit is on the female reproductive system and such and this video elucidated a few things!
Hope Hank briefly talks about what happens when the system doesn't function as it should. A significant number of people born with a female reproductive system don't have regular ovulation or menstrual cycles and it would be helpful for people to have a basic understanding of why this can happen.

Also something cool I learned is that the egg does not necessarily come out the opposite ovary every month (like alternating). Sometimes it may be the left ovary for 3 months in a row, etc.

As a woman I find that I am not ashamed to talk about ovulating and periods. Women should not have to be ashamed to talk about our reproductive organ. Uteruses are amazing! Well done.

Love these videos. My only wish is that you all would release a slower speaking version. I understand people want everything as fast as possible, but the videos are so well put together I’d enjoy it more if it were 20 mins vs. having to replay over and over because it’s so fast .

Also: During the period the uterus is contracting. The uterus also contracts during birth. So during the period you experience small and mild labour.
It's interesting to me how variable of an experience women have in regards to our periods. Some women I know have the worst periods ever, and complain of awful cramps every month. And there are women, like myself, who got extremely lucky in the period department. My periods are not the most enjoyable experience, as feminine products are annoying to deal with, but I don't get cramps at all. I really lucked out there.
I would also add that if it were biologically possible, evolution would just make you one big reproductive system. But it needs to get nutrients, and so it needs another system, and then both of those need oxygen, so you need one for that, but at this point it's too big so you need a circulatory system, and them all of this is too stupid to survive, so it needs to react with it's environment, and we get killed by viruses and bacteria, and it needs to move and have structure, and it needs a protective layer... Point is your body is there to provide for your reproduction. It is what drove evolution, and all of this amazing stuff we call life was produced in the process of becoming efficient at it.

Cramping of those muscles can be really painful. My husband described one of my really bad cramp attacks as "That looks as painful as being kicked in the nuts".
Can't know if it'll be mentioned in the next episode, but not all fertilized eggs succeed in drilling into the uterine wall. I believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that only about 1 in 4 is actually completely successful.
