Hermann Szobel. WOW. thank you for discussing this album. It’s absolutely one of the most mind blowing records I’ve ever heard in my life. I know Mike Visceglia well. A good buddy. I sat next to him in a Broadway pit for 7 years; we discussed great music every day and he never mentioned this record. He tells me now it’s like another person or another life. He can’t believe he is even on it. Herman’s story, the whole thing is just baffling and jaw dropping. This album is one of the coolest records I’ve ever heard in my life. Wow.

"Joyous Lake" is definitely one of the greatest jazz rock albums ever! It's been one of my favorites since I first heard it in the seventies. There is nothing else that sounds like it. It kicks butt!

Thank you Andy! "Urban Ensemble" worked quite a bit around LA in the late 70's. This disc was recorded in '77 (also listen to "Best of the LA Jazz Ensemble" - tracks from those sessions I could release when we were under contract to GRP ... about 5 mins ...lol) Actually Urban Ensemble got pretty heavy national airplay according to Arista (distributor) - Clive came out to hear us at the Baked Potato ... I moved to NYC in '81 and had to start from scratch. If you dig shredding, "Tides of Time" 1988 CD has some killing solos (Carlos Santana called me after hearing this) ... Hope all is well is great there for you!! Hope to get back over the pond again some day!! Peace

His only album is definitely a lost gem. I never had the balls to really give it a listen, but now that you're going to talk about it, I've found it here on YT and immediately understood why this is such a treasure. Seems like his life story is very mysterious. I once knew a guy from the US who was found walking around Jerusalem, and along the Jordan river, thinking he was Jesus. They called it the "Jerusalem Syndrome".

Late to this video, but I think at least an honorable mention is needed for Larry Coryell's Spaces. As per Wikipedia..."Spaces is an album by jazz guitarist Larry Coryell that was released in 1970. Coryell is accompanied by John McLaughlin on guitar, Chick Corea on electric piano, Miroslav Vitouš on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums. The album is sometimes considered to have started the jazz fusion genre".

Great selection. I'm glad that you mentioned library music. There are a ton of great library music albums that are in the jazz-funk style. Many compilations were released in the '90s/'00s that collect the best tracks from hard-to-find Brit, French, German and Italian library albums.

If you like Joyous Lake by Pat Martino I highly recommend finding the recording on youtube of Pat and the Joyous Lake band live at the Keystone Korner (it's great! - it came from an FM radio broadcast during the tour supporting the record). The recording shows they worked up additional material in the style of the Joyous Lake record but owing to his health issues that happened after the tour Pat did not continue in that vein. I waited many years to see if there were any bootlegs from that time and luckily this is an excellent one.

I had the great fortune to see John Stevens Away at the Plough in Stockwell in about 1979. The line up was John Stevens (drums), Jeff Clyne bass, Allan Holdsworth guitar, Gordon Beck piano and (I think) John McCrae (from Isotope) on electric piano. They just improvised from the get-go, no charts, no pre-arranged, two 45 minute sets of pure spontaneous combustion. Utterly brilliant.

By the way DARK released two albums on the German CMP label: „Dark“ and „Tamna Voda“
There were other great albums on that label from Ed Mann, Chad Wackerman, Eyeball (Van’t Hof, Lockwood, Stief, Malach, Romano) and especially „Hip Address“ from David Earle Johnson with Jan Hammer. Besides this great duo released their first album „Time is free“ on the Vanguard label. Another interesting album on CMP: “ Let's Be Generous“ Joachim Kühn / Mark Nauseef / Tony Newton / Miroslav Tadic. By the way, Joachim Kühn released some great jazz-rock albums „Cinemascope“ and „Hip Elegy“ on MPS, „Springfever“ (Wea), INFORMATION (George Kochbeck, Joachim Kühn, Mark Nauseef) as well as his collaborations with Jan Akkermann and Toto Blanke („Spider“)
Concerning Roland Vazquez check out „Feel Your Dream“ with Stu Goldberg and „The Tide of Time“ with Mike Stern
There were lots of interesing rare groove and library music albums on the French label Vadim Music. Aside from Janko Nilovic there are Jean-Claude Pelletier, Georges Arvanitas Quintet, Stringtronics, Pop Instrumental De France, CCPP, Synthesis…

There is another fusion album of Pat Martino „Starbright“ from 1976.
Mark Visceglia the bassist of HermannSzobel recently released an album „Middle of Somewhere“. He had once separated from Hermann Szobel in a dispute. Now apparently he makes himself the executor of his estate, brings out the material that has been forgotten in the archives and searches for other lost Szobel recordings.

Dark's "Tamna Voda" is a unique and extraordinary album. I bought it as a blind buy when it was released in 1989. Mark Nauseef found his niche when he moved into fusion and avant garde music in the early 1980's. When I hear those music passages by Herman Svobel I think of Zappa. The vibraphone/xylophone might be the reason.

Thanks for the intros to some Fusion albums that sort of fell through the cracks. Another group that fits in with these was the German group 'Passport', led by Klaus Doldinger on sax. They started in the early '70s, and their '75 album Cross-Collateral got a reasonably wide distribution in the US. On that album the main influence is clearly middle period Weather Report, but you can also tell that the drummer had listened to a lot of Billy Cobham. Apparently they have managed to keep putting albums out, in spite of many personnel changes.

    • @narosgmbh5916
      @narosgmbh5916 Рік тому

Klaus Doldinger is a living legend. 2021 he released "The First 50 Years of Passport". His 1975 drummer is Curt Cress. Cress is Germany's Leland Sklar of the drums. 14 000 releases with near half billion sales and Cress on the drums. Both, Doldinger and Cress are very successfull music producers for TV and movies. (I check every year Curt Cress's published yearly company balances. He is in his own league)

ONE SHOT is a great band. I saw the live some years ago with the late guitar player James Mac Gaw. After James' death, which was unfortunately far too early, they released two CDs "A James" and "111" with the following line-up:
Philippe Bussonnet basse - Daniel Jeand'Heur batterie - Emmanuel Borghi clavier - Bruno Ruder clavier

I met Mike Visceglia the bass player on that recording here in NY about15 yrs ago, He was probably living near the area where I worked in midtown Manhattan. I would see him very often and we would talk about music and bass..He gave me a copy of his book "A View From The Side" which I still have and enjoy; Its mainly interviews with other session bass players like Will Lee,Tony Levin, Lee Sklar etc. At that time he had also been the bass player for Suzanne Vega and is probably on all her main recordings. The book is great and also very autobiographical, full of stories from his NY session days. Great guy that I always remember...He even sold me one of his basses. Comes as a surprise that he is the bassist on this recording which I knew nothing about until watching this video.

Andy, I'm so glad you dove deep into the Hermann Szobel album. I first got into it about 2 years ago while on one of my Spotify "Fans Also Like" rabbit hole journeys, where I start with one artist's Spotify page, and then go to their "Fans Also Like" section, pick a band I had never heard before, and keep going from one band to the next. I don't remember who I started with on that particular day (about 2 years ago), although if I had to guess it was probably Zappa, or perhaps maybe Cameron Graves (who knows), but somewhere along the way I ended up at Hermann Szobel and LOVED it! I listened to that album about 7 times in a row, thus ending my rabbit hole journey for the weekend, and I got back to it regularly.
I really appreciated your deep dive into Szobel's background as I had no idea of anything about his history (which is totally wild and intrigueingly-eccentric), but this just makes me love the album even more. I've got to find a CD or vinyl copy of it.
I'm certain that I am one of those 24 monthly Spotify listeners you mentioned...I absolutely love this album.
    Cheers!

Roger Powell is known as the keyboardist of "Utopia", but he is an important figure in the technical and artistic development electronic instruments,.
He literally wrote the book on programming the Arp Odyssey. A master synthesizer sound designer.

Zappa would have hired Szobel had he heard Herman. Then eventually Herman and Steve Vai would have left Zappa's band to collaborate more tightly. Had this happened the duet would have been big. Steve Vai would eventually tell David Lee Roth, "Yeah sure, but Szobel's coming with me. We're a package!" That in turn would have been such a tour de force to heavily influence Roth in his re-creating himself once again as not just non-Halen rock star but Jazz/Rock star. David Lee Roth would have been the new generation's Mel Tormé! :D

Fab, never heard of any of those. That last story is so intriguing. It reminds me of Australian artist, Mandu, who released an acclaimed self titled album in the late 1970's which tanked, and who soon later disappeared despite being a singer for the legendary Lobby Loyde bands prior to his solo effort.
    A few Australian albums:
Out of the Blue (1973) by MacKenzie Theory. Recored live in the studio before a small audience. Lots of viola. Rob MacKenzie later became the guitarist for Sha Na Na in the USA.
Inner Space (1973) by Sven Liabek. He originally came from Norway as a Julliard graduate. He had fantastic careers in both Australia and America and i think is still active in Australia. Inner Space gets an intro from William Shatner! Its a soundtrack to a shark film by the famous Taylor's. $750 for the original vinyl.
The Exciting Daly Wilson Big Band featuring Kerrie Biddell (1972). Fantastic jazz funk popular with beat artists. Some of the players cut their teeth in USA big bands in the 60's.

are so many more of your suggestions well worth to be checked out! I just managed to grab a copy of Szobel, what a crazy story.
Concerning the Album Rahmann you mentioned here: as far as I know this is the band of Mahamad (or Muhamad) Hadi, also known as "Mad Sheer Khan", whose background is arabian, persian and french. He's the exciting guitarist on Nico's "Drama of Exile" from 1981; that's where I noticed him. (Not sure if you care for Nico, but she might be worth

Lots of new albums added to the wantlist! I had a strange sense of deja vu when you got to the last artist - this year after finding a strange CD rom from the 90's, I ended up learning about The Great Kat - an incredibly accomplished violin virtuoso, who was then not able to break into the classical world, and ended up in heavy metal, but spiraling out of control - she is still around today with a youtube channel that makes little to no sense. Maybe there is something to be explored in what happens to young, narcissistic virtuosos for whom the big break doesn't happen.

Nice surprise to see you mention Roland Vazquez. He's a great composer, drummer and teacher. He's teaching at Bard college in upstate New York.
My wife, a saxophonist, and I get together with Roland fairly regularly and play/record free form improvised music. We put out a recording a few years back under our band name Triospeak. TrioSpeak vol 1. We've been working on new material for the last four months.
Roland is still composing. I think he's working on music for a nonet.
I just sent him a link to your video. Cheers.

The Szobel album is so Zappaesque it's painful. Sorry, but I don't hear anything special about this album. My recommendations for lesser-known jazz rock albums are:
    John Stevens' Away - s/t (1975)
John Stevens' Away - Somewhere In Between (1976)
John Stevens' Away - Mazin Ennit (1977)
Frank Strazzeri - After The Rain (1976)
    Gilgamesh - s/t (1975)
Gilgamesh - Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into (1978)
Jasper Van't Hof's Pork Pie - Balver Hohle Jazzfestival, Germany July 27, 1974
    Jasper Van't Hof's Pork Pie - Transitory (1974)
Jasper Van't Hof's Pork Pie - The Door Is Open (1976)

Unfortunately while growing up I was beaten over the head with US & UK Jazz Rock/Prog/Fusion groups and promised myself to delve a little more into groups from around the world who put out some incredible music in the 70's and 80's. A lot of them had to come to America for some recognition.
Another artist I like very much is Karim Ziad. A fantastic (ex- Zawinul) drummer who kept all of his culture in his compositions.

    Hey Andy,
Well you knew I couldn’t resist a challenge like this!
I already posted on another of your videos about one of my all-time favourite bands, Area, and hopefully you will be able to check them out, especially as they feature North African influences in their music, which I know you love!
But here are some other suggestions of less well known fusion albums you may enjoy if you don’t already know them.
Tales of the Exonerated Flee by Horacee Arnold - Jan Hammer and John Abercrombie are tearing it all over this album, it is a mix of what I call hard early 70s fusion and more jazz stylings.
On the Mountain by Elvin Jones - what can I say, a trio with Jan Hammer just tearing it up again, classic!
Flight Never ending by Mingo Lewis - OMG strap yourself in, this is full on percussion led fusion, and Al Di Meola borrowed a number of Mingo’s compositions for his first two solo albums, which Mingo also appeared on!
Open your Eyes You Can Fly by Flora Purim - I am a massive Flora Purim fan and many of her 70s albums deserve massive praise, not least because of the presence of greats like George Duke, Leon Chancellor and Alphonso Johnson. I could name any number of other great albums by her.
Vimana by Nova - I mentioned this band in my previous message to you. The incomparable Corrado Rustici channels Jonny Mac in a mash up of styles, and as a bonus Narada is on drums and Percy Jones on bass!
Caldera - I love this band, which was basically a Latin version of RTF, featuring world class musicians including the Latin Ald Di Meola, Gorge Strunz in guitar. Honestly I can’t pick my favourite album out of the 4 they did, Caldera, Sky Islands, Time and Chance and Dreamer. Incendiary stuff!
Roller by Goblin - this band came to fame doing the soundtrack music for some of Dario Argento’s most famous Italian horror flicks, particularly Proffondo Rosso, but Roller was a non-soundtrack album that had a great proggy, fusion Pink Floyd feel.
You beat me to it on Joyous Lake, but in case you don’t know, Pat did an interesting follow up in 1998 called Stone Blue.
Lets’ Be Generous by Joachim Kuhn - oh boy this is a screamer, Miroslav Tadich does a punk Holdsworth and Tony Newton fittingly is on bass, this you will enjoy!
The Genie by Booby Lyle - Wayne Henderson late of the Crusaders set up his own production house and had an amazing core of musicians, many taken fomt the killer funk fusion group Pleasure. Bobby Lyles was the main keyboard guy and an absolute virtuoso. The Genie is his most full on album and a pristine example of funky fusion.
Jeff Lorber - people think of Jeff as a funky smooth jazz artist, but in his early days he was really tearing it up with heavy doses of fusion, and the albums I would point you to are The Jeff Lorber Fusion, Water Sign and Galaxian.
Exhibition and Jazziz by John Serry - I have a sneaking recollection you may have talked about John? These 2 albums are insane in the same way your Szobel album is. John was a child prodigy, tore it up at Eastman College with his band Auracle, and then went on to release these two fusion masterpieces. I got to know John personally and he actually stayed with me when he was in the UK, but let’s just say geniuses can be difficult! I think I posted the story about the 2 top session guitarists who turned up high as a kite thinking they could do the session for Exhibition standing on their head, and then crapped themselves when they saw the charts. In the end the great Barry Finnerty stepped in and did a great job; John said Barry could read anything. Of course the great Mike sembello did an amazing job on the follow up Jazziz (btw check out Mike’s fantastic funk and fusion playing on Geore Duke’s From Me to You).
Some honourable mentions, a lot of the Charlie Mariano stuff which often featured Phillipe Catherine, lots of stuff put out by the German MPS label, and the incredible output of Germany’s most famous fusion band, Passport (I particularly like the album Ataraxia).
Finally, on Roland Vasquez, I was a big proponent of his back in the day telling all my mates about him, even making compilation tapes can you believe! I am pretty sure I have all the albums he has released. His band featured fantastic musicians such Patrice Rushen, Mike Stern and the late great Jeff Andrews. My favourite album of his is Tides of Time which features one of the greatest covers of Palladium I have ever heard, it is absolutely incendiary!
Anyway enough blather from me, Andy I hope you enjoy any of these you don’t already know, and no doubt I will back on another video to chat fusion!

      @@AndyEdwardsDrummer Great Minds Andy!
Overnight another interesting one occurred to me, do you know the great Finnish guitarist Jukka Tolonen? He became famous as guitarist for the progressive rock band Tasavallan Presidentti. If not, check out A Passenger to Paramaribo and my favorite, Montreux Boogie Live, which also features another incredible guitarist Coste Apetrea. The best way I can describe it is Al Di Meola meets Larry Carlton.
Also I don't know if you are familiar with a band from Bristol called Present Tense? My mate Beni Williams was keyboards and it also featured the remarkable Phil Gibbs on guitar (who I said previously you might enjoy as he has shades of Roy about him), Marco Anderson on drums and sometimes Paul Dunmall on sax. They have collaborated with a number of musicians like Tony Hymas, and John Seryy recorded an album with them too when he was over. Its all free improvisation but great stuff. They did a couple of albums with an insane South American bassist Antonio Quijano, a tapping genius who Eddie Gomez was impressed by amongst others. I can probably arrange to get you some of their stuff it interested.
      Cheers

This could perhaps be well known now but Hammer's work on John Abercrombie's "Timeless" on ECM is really wild - "Lungs" in particular with wild trading of solos leading to a deep synth bass groove about 7 minutes in spurred on by the great drumming of Jack DeJohnette. Another more obscure record with Jan is "The Midweek Blues" also performed with John Abercrombie and the late David Earle Johnson, kind of a power trio which is not something I ever expected to hear out of Jan.

Mark Nauseef, on Dark -- played with Elf (i.e., with Ronnie James Dio) -- and I believe grew up with RJD... There are some records with him and Miroslav Tadic outsde of Dark (and one of them at least with Jack Bruce, iirc)... I met Miroslav in the audience at a Janet Feder/Mike Keneally show some years back, mentioned the Dark record to him. He told me his favorite David Torn record was "What Means Solid, Traveler?" and soon I concurred.

The bassist was in French fusion group Zao. Both Didier Lockwood and Liza Deluxe from Magma guest on the LP.

I purchased a copy of *Touching On* by *John Stevens* a few years after release.
My main interest was certainly *Allan Holdsworth's* inclusion on the LP.
I didn't know about the *furore* about the release and that Allan wasn't happy about it btw.
In addition, I don't remember *Gordon Beck* on it, although I don't doubt that *Andy* is correct there. I always liked Gordon Beck as he'd been a welcome addition on Ian Carr's album *Labyrinth* in the early seventies along with a host of acclaimed British jazzers *(Norma Winstone, Tony Coe, Roy Babbington etc).*
But I digress, Touching On does feature some great playing from Allan. 👌

INCORRECT; The "Touching On" record was drummer JOHN STEVENS'S album NOT Gordon Beck's.. Actually there were two records that came from those sessions in 1977 both credited to John Stevens; Touching On and Retouch. They are NOT Gordon's records. As a matter of fact Gordon Beck doesn't even play on Touching On or Retouch! Holdsworth and Beck did three records that were officially credited to either Gordon Beck himself or Holdsworth/Beck; The Things You See in 1980 was Beck's record, also "Sunbird" in 1979 like you mentioned, and "With A Heart In My Song" 1988 which is Gordon Beck AND Allan Holdsworth jointly. Finally, there are other records that exist which include Beck and Holdsworth together in more free improvising situations and are credited collectively to all the musicians involved on those recordings. "None Too Soon," although Gordon Beck plays on the album, it is not a joint record of both Holdsworth and Beck, it is an Allan Holdsworth release.
