It is because China is not a immigrant country. Most Chinese people meet foreigners rarely, especially old people or people in small cities. Chinese people are just curious about foreigners, but not in offensive way. Most people are kind and friendly. Enjoy your trip in China.

@David-ej1ps I did not state that at all, just the comparison of London compared to CCTV availability in Chinese cities and even rural areas is infeasible , especially when the CCTV that London has is mostly Private so MetPolice do not have access to live information at the department so tracking suspects is prolonged and harder.

China's jokes are the same as those of the whole world. Every country has people who laugh at other races, but the difference is that China has never enslaved blacks. China doesn't need to feel guilty about it, and you don't need to reflect on yourself. You have no right to reflect on yourself instead of all China people.

Sorry you had to deal with the ignorance of questioning you being a black person from the UK and I think this is mostly stemming from the fact that China is not an immigrant nation like many western countries and as such they don't understand the difference between ethnicity vs. nationality as readily. From my experience, I've often had to say "my ethnicity is X but I grew up in Y" in order for them to understand. Thanks for the videos!

I'm living in Asia Country outside China, and honestly as Asian in my country we also never see black tourist, it is very very rare, maybe only for people that live near international business district or international tourist site area have seen. So it is normal if Chinese people in China mostly amazed by ur presence, it more like they amaze by what they see, like seeing movie star 😊 and Chinese not apply pale beauty standard for foreigner, because they love black foreigner tourist, naturally they look you as preety black lady, for them black tone is natural tone for black foreigner, and they see it as beautiful (they apply black standard for black people, and apply white standard for white people, and apply local pale standard only for local pale people, actually they not affraid become black, actually they just avoid sun burn because they don't want like zebra cross tones ), and they also love others foreign tourist. And yes most of Chinese in China may not know much about foreign countries, it is common if they asking you for their curiosity 😊 they just really don't know.

First off, let me say how wonderful your spoken Chinese is - I am so jealous! Your observations are rather spot on. Since you love the transport be sure to take a bullet train ride somewhere. It is just a fantastic way to travel. Finally, I know exactly what you are referring to about The Stare. Back in the mid 2000’s I was traveling in a rural area and while disembarking from a small river ferry the passengers waiting to embark (well over 100) were all giving me that intense stare. I have done solo theatrical performances in my youth and felt less under the limelight than I did at that moment. 😊 Well I wish you an exciting and happy journey ahead in a wonderful country. I will be joining you in the future but in a different city.

  • @kukuandkookie
    @kukuandkookie 2 місяці тому +27

Based off videos I’ve seen, it’s definitely true Chinese people have a tendency to take a second look at black people…because yeah, they can get quite curious. 😅
But I’ve seen the stare be mentioned in other nations too.
And even in China, there’s a difference between if you’re in big cities like Shanghai or Beijing, where it’s more international, or smaller rural towns. You did compare Xiamen and Shanghai and how Xiamen has older people who may not be as culturally aware in this regard.
I myself used to return to a technically lower tier city every summer to see some family, and I would get stares too as someone who spoke English fluently (because I was born and raised in the west) despite being of Chinese descent myself.
The first time my cousin came to Canada, she was also really excited to take a picture with a foreigner. 😆
I think it’s gotten better as China gets more international, including my cousin being unlikely to make a similar awkward request now that she works in international business, but I mention it as an example of how more visibly homogenous countries may be excited by a very different-looking foreigner (as China is actually quite diverse with its 56 official ethnicities, but evidently a black person is even quite different from those minorities).
As for the pictures… There are two possibilities haha. One is that they keep it for themselves, sort of as a neat memento of the day they “met a foreigner today that I don’t usually see!” Or if they _do_ post it, they would probably post it to WeChat, which is one of China’s biggest social media apps (although you may already know that based on you mentioning WeChat haha). Weibo is a possibility though, but I don’t think private photos are _as_ common on Weibo, because Asians value their privacy lol.
Which I know sounds unbelievable for people who always hear about how evil and dystopian China is, like with the cameras that you mentioned. But yeah, the cameras help keep the area safer, and China will obviously be a little different considering it has a population of 1 billion people to keep safe.
If it helps for anyone worried, remember there are tons of CCTV everywhere in the world, and all governments and corporations will track you (as sad as it is).
I’m glad you’re enjoying your time in China though!
Full agree the food is always great and that it’s super convenient-and getting more convenient every year (I was pretty blown away how much China has changed since I was a kid haha). And yeah, no matter how the nation’s evolved, I’ve always found Chinese people to be quite friendly-China’s population gets criticized a lot as brainwashed, dirty, backwards, rude, evil, etc, but I’ve always personally found them to at least have a kind of sincerity and hospitality that I appreciate. ^^

and because Chinese people (mostly older generation) love pictures not just foreigners they take pictures every time they meet up with their friend etc they just have to take a picture of everyone. Sometimes it's for their WeChat feed but majority of time it's just kept for memories in the phone.

Awesome video Destinee. Thank you for sharing this video. Wishing you an awesome trip in China.
2:00 I myself have been asked this question many times before. It took me some time to understand the question's intent of "你来自哪里的 (Where are you from)?" was actually a two-part question: "where did you grow up?" or "what is your ethnic ancestry?" For instance an Aussie with Chinese ancestry, the expected response would be "I'm from (grew up in) Australia but my ancestral home ( 祖基) is in so-and-so province in China. For yourself, you could say that "you grew up or were born in England and your ancestral home is in so-and-so country in Africa."
In the west, we're used to just replying the answer with the country/place where you grew up in. Of course, those 奶奶 are totally tactless; like the way they'd point blank say, "OMG, you've grown fat" to my face.🤦‍♂
5:30 In WeChat, there's an area that works like Facebook or X (Twitter). For some people's feed looks like a photo journal of their life.
7:30 Take a look around you. You probably can't find a single person on your walkabout that vaguely looks like you. Local Chinese are extremely sociable people; they do not hesitate to walk up to a complete stranger(including foreigners) and start conversations. This is a good thing if you're lost or if you need help. The standard/polite way to dismiss them is to say 我干时候 and get the hell out of there.
12:45 OMG! Virtual Reality map navigation! Mind blown. Haven't been to China for years, so that's new to me! Why haven't my Chinese friends mention this to me?!?

I understand if you feel uncomfortable with the stares as I can understand how you might feel, and obviously I cannot speak for every Chinese person but I would say - yes, even though the beauty standard is pale skin, I don’t think they stare because of this. I think it’s mostly due to lack of understanding of “migration” and the “monoethnic society” where most people are Chinese, additionally it’s a different culture so it may not be considered rude to stare (although I’m not 100% sure). Obviously I cannot speak for all Chinese people, but this is from my perspective of having a few Chinese relatives! Hope you enjoy the rest of your day😊❤

I just paused at the part with the grandma thinking that only white people live in England, I’m sorry that you get such ignorant comments, I think some of the older people grew up closed off from the world and don’t know how to use the internet.
I think the younger generations who now have access to the internet are starting to be more educated and less ignorant about the rest of the world.
China is very heavily populated but not racially diverse, and there are very few tourists and foreign residents, so I think if you don’t look Chinese you would feel very uncomfortable. You would be the center of attention everywhere you go.
I’m American but of Chinese descent and sometimes I get stares when I speak in English when I visit China, but I can’t imagine being stared at all the time, that sounds really tiring!
Hopefully as time passes and China becomes a more international country, there will be greater understanding of foreign cultures and peoples.

@@Lovelylex32 Ah yeah, someone else has responded to you clarifying the translation, but I’ll add some context too:
姑娘 machine-translates to “girl,” which sounds quite rude in English, but the meaning here (and usually) is “Miss,” as the other commenter mentioned.
“加油” here translates as “come on,” which isn’t entirely wrong, but it sounds extra condescending when you add it with the “girl” in the machine-translation.
But 加油 (jiayou) is actually a cheer in Chinese, like “you can do it!” or “keep going!” or “keep it up!”
It’s a way to cheer someone up or encourage you. It translates literally to “add oil,” like if you imagine you’re a fire that has to keep burning or going.
And yeah their remark about it being more curiosity than maliciousness is also generally true. It’s kind of intended as a “they haven’t seen a lot of black people in their life, so they get pretty curious.”

This history is the most well remembered, and the most world taught on textbooks and the information just kind of stops here. If you want to know more about modern Europe, or Africa, the rest of the information can’t be found on textbooks.

Note on the hair part: I knew a European lady in China who commented that her blond haired daughter once cried that she wanted to shave her hair off because all the Chinese wanted to touch her hair. So it's not specifically targeted at black people. Also, black people have the most awesome hair and hairstyles, it's no wonder the Chinese would stare. :D

Chinese people enjoy many privileges in Singapore, Malaysia, and SE Asia specifically. So yes, pale skin and colorism are definitely a beauty standard for Chinese people.

Where you come from is just a cultural difference. In Chinese culture, there is a concept called "fallen leaves return to their roots," which means that where a person originally comes from is very important. Regardless of whether you migrate between different provinces in mainland China or move outside mainland China, you should not forget your ancestral home. Therefore, many friends from Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia return to the mainland to find their ancestral hometown. So when they ask where you are from, they want to know where your ancestors are from. However, many people in China do not know much about foreign history, so this can be a bit confusing

  • @auslei
    @auslei 2 місяці тому +3

Fair skin is not race based. Historically it id always the case, this is because wealthy families did not need to perform hard labour therefore fair skin, this also applies to intellectuals who are and were well respected. Also just like in Western countries there are ignorant people. The stares happens to Chinese too, admittedly more towards foreigners. They are more curious than meant to harm. You need to understand cultures are different, thing you feel impolite may not be seen the same and vice-versa. Keep an open mind and welcome to China. You will find that there is no racial hate like the west do, hate under the politeness.

Obsession over fair skin isn’t just a Chinese beauty standard it happens all over Asia and Southeast Asia. I’ve been told when I was young that pale skin symbolized wealth and status since manual laborers would get tan from the sun and the wealthy would be sheltered indoors from the sun. (Don’t know how true this is but as a tan American born Chinese I can say I would get plenty of comments and stares when I go back to China as well). I believe majority of stares and whispers are usually out of pure intrigue of seeing a foreigner.

    1. The majority of Chinese people are not used to people who are physically very different from them, and they don't know sometimes their curiosity looks offensive to others. Kids from western countries grow up in a diverse environment, so they are used to it. I live in each side of the world for about the same time, so I am aware of the difference.
    2. Your Chinese is pretty good, good pronunciation and good pick of words. When you start talking to Chinese in their language, they will suddenly appreciate you and welcome you.
    3. Chinese people have the stereotype that black people are good at sports and entertainment industry, and can learn a new language quickly. That may bother you or you can take advantage of it, depends on how you look at it.
Good luck to your China adventure. So much to explore in an affordable way.

A lot of Chinese are doing quite well now. First, China does not rely on tourism to proper like a lot of other countries. China now opens up to foreigners because of the international economic activities. They do not see a need to train tour guides and services people in English. In any tourist attraction places, the foreign tourist is just a very tiny fraction comparing to Chinese. Imagine that
just like North Korea, the tourist industry is not important right now.

My friend, don't feel offended nor disrespect in Asia because in the End we are one big Family here on Earth.
If you have looked on History during Ice Age alot of Asian prehistorical Ancestors came from Africa...
Example: Eastern Asians have Khoisan DNA that's rooted back to South Africa tribes...
Eskimo's were also migrated from Asia
Native Americans were also migrated from Asia...that explains Aztecs/Mayan tribes etc etc
Why do you think that Buddha has similar dreadlocks on paintings/statues etc etc?
Because we were originally from the same same Origin.
Some have stayed and some have moved on like Nomads in the past(History)....
So we have to Respect each other......Just accept who we are now....
Asians have Africans DNA/Native Americans DNA etc etc...We can't Deny that most people/races are from one big Family.
Lets make this world a better place shall we? :)

After watching a lot of videos of foreigners watching China, I suddenly realized that because China is a country dominated by yellow people, we are the "majority". People of other skin colors are inevitably stared at, and Chinese people don’t actually have the concept of so-called racism like the West, it’s more just curiosity or stereotypes. Most Chinese people have only seen foreigners on TV or on their phones, and rarely encounter them in real life (but I think they are becoming more and more). But I can understand that foreigners feel uncomfortable with these things in China, but if you want to travel to China, I’m afraid you must be prepared for this.

A few bad habits some Chinese have per my observation:
    1. Smoking
    2. Speak unnecessarily loudly in metro or public transportation
    3. Walking on the sidewalk always at the center of the road
    4. Don’t have the sense of privacy as the mainland Chinese long being in a collective society. On contrary, Chinese people from Hong Kong or Taiwan have a better sense of privacy and human rights.
