This cake is like my Mom used to make. We called it “Funeral Cake” because she always made it as the dessert to meals she would take to someone who had lost a loved one. When we kids would come home from school and see it cooling be on the stove, first thing we would ask was “who died.” Lol….there were times she made it just for us, though. It is one of my favorite cakes!

Thank you!!!! I sure remember that cake. We would have it some sunday mornings, I kid you not. I'm not sure the reasoning behind those special moments. But, I wish I could still have them. Since I can't still have them with my Mom... I'm going to make more memories with our children and our grandchildren. I'll tell them more about about her and the rest of their Great Grandparents. All while serving them this delicious cake. You always make me 😃 smile. Because you always trigger great memories. Thank you Tammi. You truly are a Godsend. I'm going to add this to the " Harvest weekend " menu, from here on out!

I wish I was your neighbor. I'd let you and chris have your piece and I'd buy the rest of it from you. This looks good. I have to say, I have tried a lot of your recipes and NEVER had anything other than GREAT. I tell everybody to watch you. You do a wonderful job of explaining what you're doing. If people can't learn to cook from you, there's probably not much hope for them.

That’s what we always called evaporated milk. What so many young people don’t know is that evaporated milk makes the best mashed potatoes, milk gravy and a bit on hot cereal is so good. Maybe I’m just old and those are taste from my Mothers kitchen and my kitchen.

My father was the baker in our family. Homemade desserts dwindled down after he died. My favorite thing he made was cream pie. I loved it when I was young but now I have to eliminate the excess sugar (the older I've gotten the less I tolerate sugar; overly sweet things make me gag so I have to reduce or eliminate sugar in dishes). The crust is graham cracker, the middle layer is cream cheese, whipped cream, and vanilla extract; my father added sugar as well but I omit it as the other ingredients taste good as is, and the topping was traditionally Maraschino cherries but Daniel doesn't like cherries so I tend to do strawberries or apples. My mother is Filipino so she made things like turon (plantain bananas cut in half, optionally top with jackfruit, place in a wrap, and fry), halo-halo (crushed or shaved ice and evaporated milk with various other ingredients like fruit, jelly, flan, ice cream, purple yam, red Asian beans, etc.; halo means mix so you mix everything together and eat it with a spoon) and I'm not sure what it's called but rice flour balls that were boiled and then dipped in sugar. We lived in the Philippines when I was three to five years old. Then we returned to the United States. Mom and my brother were born in the Philippines. My father, my sister, and I were born in the United States. Daniel only likes angel food cake. Every other kind of cake he just eats off the icing. My favorite flavor is sour. My most favorite food is sinigang (Filipino sour soup and Daniel loves it too; Lee doesn't like it). My favorite sweet is chocolate hot dogs (donuts shaped like hot dog buns with buttercream icing down the middle, dusted with powdered sugar, and three slashes of chocolate; they are a best seller at a local bakery). I also love cheesecakes and Panettone. Asian cheesecakes are fluffier than US ones.

I remember mother making it, and I also used to make it a lot. But seems like we put raisins it, too -- does that sound right? It’s been a long time since I’ve made it, and I can’t check because we live in Texas but are in Virginia for our great-niece’s wedding. Have to say I’ve been wanting to make it without the icing, putting the pecans in the cake, and have it for a quick breakfast! Need try it, keep individual pieces frozen for those days when you need to run out the door in a hurry! 💝
