- The writer and director of ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT shares why SANS SOLEIL and ARABIAN NIGHTS are gifts that keep on giving, talks about Aki Kaurismäki’s “funny and audacious” Leningrad Cowboys films, and praises Louis Malle’s PHANTOM INDIA as a must-watch for everyone.

This queen is just snatching up the box sets. Great strategy.
So she can sell them to her smelly relatives!
Are you gay or simp?
@@anchalkumar8224 If I was either of those I would be praising this loser, not making fun of her!
lets goo. payal kapadia !!!! absolutely mistreated by her own govt but the talent and hardwork always shines through. her film should have been india's oscar nom
All we imagine as light would have won i have zero doubts.
the govt of india itself co produced the film.
@@MaddyB10 no it was french producers that ensured it got made. Why do you think it doesn't even have an all india release yet, even though it won at cannes. If the Indian government had even 5% in this they would have claimed it to be theirs and lauded and paraded the movie. Instead you can't even see it in india. The best irony is that the very ftii that gave her hell now had to screen it under special accolades. So good karma
How much will you lie @@atannsjmamdnnfn
@@KurtC2000 it never got it's promised rebate from the govt by the way.
Discovered Payal's work during COVID lockdown, and she has been my favourite ever since. Im so proud of her and glad that shes getting the recognition she deserves. Loved AWIAL, one lf my favourite films this year ❤️

I adore Kaurismaki films and Payal is the first I've heard recommend one of his films. Ariel, Match Factory Girl...wow!
Her pick is a great film, too. Those Leningrad Cowboy films are hilarious! Unique sense of humor.
Wes Anderson made a career by ripping him off!
Finally someone picks Phantom India! underrated masterpiece by Louis Malle
I love the guests who pick (and talk about) films that no one else does, especially the ones I haven't seen. Like the story about her studying Mysterious Object At Noon down to "every minor frame", as she put it. Love that.
I love Apichatpong Weerasethakul but I haven't seen that film yet.
excellent selection. That smile! and then the giggle and the end won my heart.
Thanks to Torrents and P K Nair(NFAI).
In india we watched world cinema through them otherwise no option.
Criterion collection still not accessible in india ;)
Nfai just has old movies
@@shrishri8898Your comment is old now
SO, a female filmmaker from India NOT Bollywood connected! I love Bollywood, but I wish more grounded films were more accepted there. Aren't the Leningrad Cowboys the traditional Russian music group that toured the States for awhile? As I recall, that was a fun film! I would never guess the "Paris is Burning" pick, but it shows how a specific story can be universal.
Shoojit Sircar, Anurag Kashyap, Vetrimaaran, Vikramaditya Motwane, you can check out these guys' filmographies.
Also, we have to add songs because of the commercial factors, because cinema is a business in this country, not art. Makes our cinema unique though.
Bollywood movie sucks, Hindi movies are good, malayalam and old Bengali movies are the best.
Bollywood isn’t the only film industry in India. There’s so many amazing films being made in the other states. I’ve been getting into films from the state of Kerala recently. They’re shot beautifully and have great grounded storylines. Ee ma yau and kumbalangi nights are ones I really liked. 😊
@eleveli2437 👆👍🫶👏✊️
@@achunaryan3418.. Bengali? Maybe the old ones but the new ones are crap except one good director or two that still make magic out of their passion for cinema... But yeah, definitely won't recommend the new bengali cinema
I watch these closet videos religiously and in thousand lives I wouldn't have imagined an Indian standing there. Our country despite its rich history and tradition of storytelling has found it so hard to penetrate itself into the global audience. Now with films like RRR and All we imagine as light things seem to be changing as the western media seems more than evere open to us. Our country should bank on this opportunity and introduce policy , collaboration , and put efforts to promote India's soft power in this day and age through young filmmakers like her.
She's such a great director! I had the chance to see a preview of "All we imagine as light" last May and I fell in love with it! Bravissima!!💜💜💜
I'm not familiar with Payal but I'm one minute into the video and I like her already. She seems chill.
All these are going into my watchlist, she seems great.
Great seeing the Eclipse collections getting love.
A Night of Knowing Nothing is a great GREAT film.
The second there's a Criterion Collection version on Blu Ray, I will get it. I watched it last month on Criterion Channel and it's one of the few films that I felt I couldn't pause it for any reason.
Where to watch?
Payal Kapadia selection is all new to me. I 'll definitely look for her picks.
Fantastic choices! And I am glad she picked the Forman. I have a copy and it is still a favourite!
Anyone who picks Sans Soleil is a winner in my heart.
Shut up, nerd.
I knew she would achieve something big when I watched ‘A Night Of Knowing Nothing‘. I knew she was unique.
Go Payal ❤ Finding you on Criterion Closet picks is amazing
she directed the best film of the year
Love Payal Kapadia and selection of films. Only recently I saw All We Imagine as Light, loved the film, can't wait for more people to see it. Criterion please invite more Indian film makers to select their favourite films. 😍😍
She is cute yess , but why is the cuteness kept adding up as she was talking about movies , that chuckle after speaking about passolini thou ♥️
Loved this one! Very different picks from the norm; I found that rather refreshing. I have never seen any of her films but now I’m prioritizing her! Thanks!
Hope you do! 😊 She just won the Grand Prix prize at Cannes this year for her film. She deserves the accolades she won't get from the place she's from.
Great to see someone finally picking a Satyajit Ray film. Probably the most underrated of all the pantheon directors, and everything I've seen from him has been great. Would love if Criterion would get Ashani Sanket as there's still no official English-language release.
Really love when the Eclipse-collections gets some love! And the other pics is great too!
Finally probably the first Indian Filmmaker to make it to the closet. Really looking forward to All That We Imagine As Light....
Respect for the Eclipse sets ✊ Also now I need to watch my Sans Soleil, I’ve only ever bothered with La Jetee.
Really amazing picks! Lots of movies that typically don’t get much attention but are so worth watching!
So happy you guys got Payal to come!
Good description. Inspiring and informative video that inovates.

Great collection
Sans Soleil is amazing!
a pretty awesome selection all round
This did more for her than any marketing surrounding her new film ❤❤
Beautiful vlog
I love Sean Baker. I love his wonderful marvelous flim, Anora. But after seeing Babygirl From Halina Reijn. I just felt amazingly in this heartfelt film in depth. Nicole Kidman is the altimate babygirl. However, with my fully imagination which I may be fault. I just make it for Babygirl with your full version. OMG ... The art of new vibe just bursts through the dark. That's it. Please don't tell anyone for this wild imagination of mine. Just only one film of yours All we imagine as light I watched. Your Masterpiece just can form a vivid & solid signature right there in my mind.
