You guys are the best. A wealth of info for all LR3 owners and Land Rover enthusiasts, what a God-send!! Thank you Christian and Vera we appreciate you!
Well done Vera for working out that the feed pipes to the bottles hold 10ml on fuel, therefore the bottle reading was 10ml too high. A word of advice Christian: My wife Valerie is also very clever when it comes to these observations. I have now learned to reply to her “I know that and I was just waiting for you to have noticed it too!” Unfortunately, I have used this excuse so many times now that Valerie doesn’t believe me any more. Unfortunately for me also, she is also correct on this observation!
Vera! You swore twice in one UA-cam video- I didn't know you swore!!! Good pick up re the additional fuel level because of the pre-primed test hoses. This was a very interesting video. Thank you for showing us the test procedure. You guys are the best, and have the best Land Rover Discovery channel.
😅👍 Usually, Christian cuts out all the swearing because of UA-cam regulations. We don't swear a lot by any means, but this time he said that UA-cam relaxed their regulations. So far the video is still online. 😂🙋♀️ Vera
Well observed Vera of the extra fuel already in the hoses when starting the test; you’re both legends and thanks for the Australian mode, much appreciated here down under👍🇦🇺

Love the videos, great to see and hear a German perspective on a Land Rover. ! First, the Discovery 3 poor start, in my humble experience, most of Disco 3 cold start issues are down to two things. 1, the fuel heater and 2, the heater plugs!! Mine a 2005 Disco 3 TDV6 with just over 200,000 miles has NEVER missed a beat, but it only has 3 working heater plugs or glow plugs🙁 I have found that using the heater plugs at least 3 times in really cold, we were down to -12 degrees this year, the Disco has never failed to start! When the car was still under warranty we were told that the heater plugs had failed. Strangely enough I could not book the vehicle in before the warranty expired so we would have to pay for the repair! Go figure! But here we are several years later and still running fine. Have Faith, our British engineering built the modern world. We might moan but we still carry on working and we won’t let you down! Plus with regards to the end of the video, the steering wheel fitted was not a L/R product, but an aftermarket one, as we say in English garages, with vehicles, the biggest problem is the nut that holds the steering wheel !!!
Another great video with Vera saving the day lol. Very interesting to watch and I love listening to the bickering. I recently cleaned the MAP sensor on mine ( they get clogged up with oil and carbon very quickley) and gained 3 MPG and slightly smoother tickover. I would suggest this is done every 6 months or 6000 miles.thinking about trying to import a catch can from Australia to help reduce the oil/carbon build up in the induction/egr system. These videos on this car are so useful for tracking down fuel issues. I’m doing the same thing after getting low fuel rail pressure fault but I suspect the HPFP like the final outcome on this one too.
@BenVallack They do not replace the volume control valve and the pressure control valve when they refurb the pump. Most shops also do not test the pump and provide no test protocol.
Reminds me of an old BBC TV program back in the day - titled “your life in there hands” - watching you “operate” on the engine - “Vera, Scalpel!” - “lm going in with the clamp” - you are a LR3 surgeon for sure Christian- again, another great video making the mundane an entertainment and Vera the eye candy
Great video again. Great to see a defender at yours. Recently did replace my steering linkage because of excessive play in the universal joints. The part was €60 and easy enough to do. Enjoy your venison
Also I forgot to say, I found that my Jag is quite fussy about fuel filters. If the fuel filter gets old then it won't idle properly. I always carry a spare one.
Hi Christian, just a quick thought about poor starting and initial rough running. I haven't done much work on an LR3 but have done lots on Disco 1 & 2 diesels and their Defender equivalents. On all engine starts (hot or cold) the glow plug circuitry is activated, the glow plugs heat up the cylinders and the engine fires up; a lesser known aspect is that even after engine starts turning and ticking over, the glow plugs will continue to work for up to 30 seconds AFTER the engine has started, to help with initial tick-over. So MAYBE there is an issue with the glow plug circuitry/relay/glow plugs ?
👍We will check the glow plugs first thing when the Disco acts up again. A lot more has been done, which will be explained in an upcoming video. Right now the car runs fine thankfully. 👌🙋♀️ Vera
We always try to avoid cursing due to UA-cam regulations , or covered it with a honking noise😅👍. But Christian said that UA-cam loosened thos restrictions, so I hope he is right about that and we don't get our video removed.😂🙋♀️ Vera
The working glow plug is extremely important for this engine to run smoothly in the cold, it doesn't matter what the temperature is outside I know, i owning a D3 in 2005, 391,000 km. This car has been with me for 11 years.

Hi i would definitely check glow plugs for bad start and rough running at cold very common have lots off them on costumers discos not a bad job but get engine warm before starting job they come out without snapping them just a tip keep up the good videos 😁
I had one of those leak off pipes fail on the highway. There was a cloud of diesel behind me. No fire or deaths fortunately! Those tiny clips are a nightmare. Definitely order spares before disconnecting the injectors
I don't have experience with diesel Disco as I own a petrol one, but my diesel Nissan with Denso common rail fuel system had similar issues around 200k that were caused by the fuel pressure regulating valve located on a high-pressure pump. The part was ~$70, but a bit tricky to replace, no issues since then.
Excellent video again. Great to see investigational work going on rather than just replacement of parts in the hope that it fixes stuff. At least you now know that the injectors are ok so I assume it could be a fuel pump or delivery issue? On my D2 it was the injector seals as well as a faulty pump. Good luck with all the future videos 😁👍
I’d be checking the intank fuel pump. The car will run with a faulty one but when the tank gets low it’s too hard for the high pressure pump to suck the diesel up to itself. Had a similar problem with the Ford territory diesel v6 which is essentially the same engine
We have checked the intank fuel pump, and it was working fine. But, we found a lot of debris inside the tank. We believe that this car has been driven in areas with poor diesel quality. 🙋♀️ Vera
Hi Guys, very nice and funny video ( i loved the Aussy mode). I'm pretty sure that cylinder balancing could be tested via digital diagnostic tool (iidTool does it). Yours has been the "analogical diagnose" :-)) For rougher cold starts you could investigate glow plugs first (amps clamp should be fine to check glow plugs current drain just before a cold start), in warm conditions you can fool the intake temperature sensor using some resistors in order to force the car to "feel" a cold climate and set on the glow plugs (Robbie's guide to glow plug diagnostic explain that very well). Hope you solve the problem quickly! Now have to wait until next sunday to know more about it :-))) Cheers
Hiya , brilliant and very informative as always , funny enough done the offset values using the gap iid on my D3 , what were they on this disco please , , have read u can also do them with an oscilloscope, some years ago on my 2002 freelander TD4 done a leak back test , hope it was ok to also share this video on the discovery 3 forum, think I’ve shared 3 or 4 of them on there so hopefully your get some more subscribers and likes as there so well made full of great technical information , but of course Vera brings it all together with her fantastic filming/ editing , lol, thanks again and as always look forward to the next one , enjoy the summer and stay safe ,
There will be a separate video about the root cause. Right now there are no faults but Fabian needs to drive it a bit longer. It’s also no longer cold right now. Christian
Super video. I did this job twice on my Disco last year. I did not close the engine's return lines like you did. I would say it is not necessary. I only put some kleenex paper underneath. But nothing comes out from the lines while running the engine. Do you plan a video about glow plug change in the future?
Thanks for yet another interesting and educational D3 video! Fabians rig will well prepared for the Mongolian trip with your quality services. We were talking about if you had more plans to upgrade your own D3 in the coming videos, like for example a split charger system or some travel/vacation related mod? We are still building on ours, but is very inspired by our previous mods and would like to see what else you can come up with. Take care you guys, and btw Vera, umi appreciated your clarification of the six cylinders return fuel hoses😆👌🏻
We definitely want to upgrade our D3, we even have the parts already. Unfortunately, we did not have time for that yet. We promised Fabian that we were going to help him with his car, which took a lot of time. Christian also works a lot right now and we only have the Saturday to work on cars. 🙋♀️ Vera
I'm so glad I didn't buy a D3. Every new vid you make reminds me I made the correct choice. Anyway I don't know anything about D3 fuel systems but on my TD6 RR it gets bad starting when the secondary fuel pump starts to fail. I've had to replace it twice in five years. Looking forward to the next episode of LR Time. Cheers.... 👍
I’m so glad I have a V8 petrol Cayenne that is 17 year old now and has low range transfer case. She gets used off-road and has been very extremely reliable. I live LR disco abs RR but seeing all this I’d never drive it.
Great video. British/Australian mode had me chuckling. I don't suppose you would know if the Discovery 3 or 4 front seats would fit into Freelander 1? I'm thinking of changing mine and the ones in your Discovery look very comfortable.
The like 👍 button isn’t enough. Another fantastic video along with another thing I won’t be trying myself 😂. My D3 doesn’t like starting in the colder weather. Battery is suffering from the vehicle not being run enough.
Greetings from Down Under, Christian and Vera! I don't know why I am enjoying your videos so much - I drive a 200 Series Land Cruiser. I guess maybe being a Land Rover DIscovery II owner for a decade, and working on my own vehicle (though not to the same level as you guys!) I am curious about what it would take to maintain a Disco 3 diesel. I have to admit, I am a little concerned about just how much work is required, compared to a Toyota, which is just routine oil and filter changes. Nonetheless your videos would help me if I were to buy a Discovery 3 as a weekend hobby vehicle. :) By the way, I think fixing a Defender is *significantly* easier to work on compared to a Discovery. There is a lot of old school stuff in it similar to a Discovery II.
We think that one view from a Toyota guy counts as 10 regular views on UA-cam. Going from a Land Cruiser to a Discovery may increase your blood pressure and suicide thoughts. Christian
We get most of our parts here in Germany from online stores. But when we need to get OEM parts only available in the UK, we shop here www.advancedfactors.co.uk/ 🙋♀️ Vera
what was the solution in the end? I have a range tdv8 with the same problem, p2290... I have changed the high pressure pump and checked that the tank pump gives 0.5 bar and the injector return is fine tanks you!!
@@Vera_and_Christian Well, I changed the original vdo high pressure pump and it still has the same failure... It only fails when the engine is at working temperature and if I cool the high pressure pump with water it doesn't fail... It only fails in the speed range from 2000 to 3000 rpm and fails both on the road and with the vehicle parked Thanks you!
@@carlosbarroso8070 If you still have the fault, you may want to plot the behavior of the Fuel Pressure, pressure control command value, volume control command value and RPM in the moment of the fault. You may see if there is a demand for pressure but the pump is not responding or responding with a long delay. This could be a problem with the pressure regulator valve or with the volume control valve. In addition to the P2290 I also saw P0087-00 and P0191-23. All pointed towards a pressure problem. You wrote you replaced the OEM pump. You need to install a OEM pump. Most aftermarked or rebuild pumps don´t work because the volume control valve and the pressure control valve did not get replaced. And yes, the problem occurs only with a hot pump. I did not heard about it happening at idle. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian a new siemens vdo brand high pressure pump was assembled the fault p0087-00 appeared before now it no longer appears in the diagnosis machine the pressure at 2500rpm is more or less 50000kpa when cold when it starts to fail hot it goes halfway and as I said, you cool the high pressure pump with a water hose and the pressure is maintained and the car does not fail I'm waiting for the fuel rail pressure sensor to see if it reads wrong in that rpm range and that's why the car fails... Thank you very much Christian!!
Good day, I'm having issues with a 2016 land rover discovery LR 4. It's rough idling and won't rev when pressing the gas pedal. The reason for this was some bad fuel was bought and there was some water in the fuel. The tank was dropped and drained and fresh fuel was put in, the fuel filter was changed and the injectors were cleaned and it's still behaving the same way. I'm not getting any codes in the computer and all injectors were put back in there exact removal location. It's dumping a lot of fuel and smoking white. I only can rev it up only if I remove the connectors for the mass air flow sensors . I have been at this issue for couple weeks now and still can't find the problem, can you help?
Now would the dealer have come clean about the steering wheel if when they started work the discovered it was only a loose nut, or would they have continued to replace the rack. 🤔
Does anyone know do you need to code injectors after engine swap, ecu is not swapped. Original ECU of the car. After swapping the engine doesn’t work as smooth in mine as in the donor car.
I don´t know. I think the 2.7L is coded and the 3.0L or the other way around. Check on Diso3.co.uk if you find something there or on one of the Facebook groups. I neever had to swoap or change a injector. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Thanks a lot mate. You guys are amazing and really helpful with your content. Keep it going 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻. Another question, planing to switch to 5w40 based on your recommendation and research. I would like to hear about experiences so far of those who tried. Planing on using Motul or Liqui Moly
Christian, I have a Toyota but recently bought a discovery 3 It has a diesel leak coming from somewhere on the right hand side of the engine. I am sort of blaming you for this due to watching all of your videos and now owning one. Is there a common fault or wear issue before I start my journey to you and Vera for Christmas repairs.
It is best to search for that leak, soon. Hopefully you already have found it by now. Did you buy that leak? We never had a diesel leak on any Discovery. But at least you know what you do over Christmas break. Hope you find your leak and can fix it. I always recomend Advanced Factors for searching for part numbers. And anyone in the UK can also buy there directly. I assume you don't have a Land Cruiser as a Toyota, but a smaller one. I hope you can fix it and enjoy your Disco. 👍🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian Yes I found it, the return hose connection at the injector has fractured, new set ordered and will be installed next week when they arrive. I have a Toyota Hilux Invincible x for work. Thanks for your time replying. Have a great Christmas.
@@AndyK.1 I only mention it because a relative was having difficult starting issues from cold, and only after the glow plugs were replaced did the issue resolve. She used BERU glow plugs £25-£30 for a set of 4.( not LR vehicle obviously ) Your *"don't make much of a difference"* statement confuses me; if some of the current glow plugs are faulty, then how could replacing with a new set not make much difference? As I understand it, a diesel engine is first started from cold by pre-heating the cylinder combustion area to encourage/promote first initial combustion from the mechanical compression of fuel/air in the cylinder head, after which the heat from the previous combustion is retained allowing the next successive combustion upon compression to ocurr. I do not know of any other diesel engine that does not require glow plugs in order to start above 0*c; so they must be required and are important. I would be interested in hearing your reasoning why they *"don't make much of a difference above 0degC"*
The low fuel pressure fault and hard to start on these engines is usually caused by a weak intank fuel pump. The intank pump is used to provide pressure to the HPFP and if the pressure or flow is not enough the HPFP cannot provide enough fuel or pressure to the high pressure rail. Replaced quite a few and its easy to diagnose. www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic130062.html Robbies guide will tell you all you need to know. If you do replace the pump please only change it for a OEM full unit and not just a pump. I know it sounds daft however i have never known a aftermarket pump replacement work for more than a couple of months.
We have followed Robbies guide for a while now 👍 (we already gave credit to him in another video). We already took the tank out a couple of weeks ago and checked the pump, which was just fine. But found something else in the tank that might have contributed to the problem. A video covering the entire process is coming out soon. 🙋♀️ Vera
@chris But what if you change the lpfp to an oem-pump from Island4x4 because the old one pulled only 3A and gave 3psi at the schrader, and the new pump deliveres the same amount also?
😀👍We are just fine. Sometimes a video cannot be produced in one take, as we found out the last two weeks. We basically have only one day to film if we want to post a video every week. So if that doesn't work out, or parts are missing, then there is no content. Christian has a stressful job as it is, and our UA-cam Channel should not add to that stress level. But we just did a major repair on our Discovery finally and that video will be up very soon.🙋♀️ Vera
Oh my, I hope you can get it sorted out, soon. We have a video about one cause for the water leak here ua-cam.com/video/TLmG8xjA0q0/v-deo.htmlsi=DmsaOTpe_t949oZd🙋♀️
All you need to fix a defender is a channel lock, some tooth picks a big hammer, and a tube of grease. And you don’t even need a manual, unless you want to rebuild the injector pump. 😂 also you can get away with only one opposable thumb on your non dominant hand, but two makes it easier.
My brother in law is on his 3rd LR3. I really want to show him your channel. BUT....I think it would give him a heart attack if he found out how many things might be wrong with his Disco.

Thanks. I will check Robbie’s guide for glow plugs. Good hint. Christian

Wow this is serious Discovery time
Glad you used Australian mode to finally get the heat shield in 🇦🇺 did you ever get to the source of the problem in the first place?
There will be a separate video about the root cause. Right now there are no faults but Fabian needs to drive it a bit longer. It’s also no longer cold right now. Christian
Super video. I did this job twice on my Disco last year. I did not close the engine's return lines like you did. I would say it is not necessary. I only put some kleenex paper underneath. But nothing comes out from the lines while running the engine.
Do you plan a video about glow plug change in the future?
We will check the glow plugs on Fabians LR3 for sure and make a video about it. 👍🙋♀️ Vera
Do you know if you can reset the 4WD special programs with a diagnostic tool on a D3 Landrover
Thank you Chris Australian
Thaks for yours videos , un saludo desde España
By the way, I think fixing a Defender is *significantly* easier to work on compared to a Discovery. There is a lot of old school stuff in it similar to a Discovery II.
We think that one view from a Toyota guy counts as 10 regular views on UA-cam. Going from a Land Cruiser to a Discovery may increase your blood pressure and suicide thoughts. Christian
does the air intake pipe and fan need to come out to do this?
Sorry, I don’t remember if it was absolutely required or not. I think not. Christian
Thank you!
Hi Christian where can i buy all disco3 parts specially online shops?
We get most of our parts here in Germany from online stores. But when we need to get OEM parts only available in the UK, we shop here www.advancedfactors.co.uk/ 🙋♀️ Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian THANKS A LOT
what was the solution in the end?
I have a range tdv8 with the same problem, p2290...
I have changed the high pressure pump and checked that the tank pump gives 0.5 bar and the injector return is fine
tanks you!!
The problem was the high pressure fuel pump. A new original VDO pump resolved the 2290. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Well, I changed the original vdo high pressure pump and it still has the same failure... It only fails when the engine is at working temperature and if I cool the high pressure pump with water it doesn't fail... It only fails in the speed range from 2000 to 3000 rpm and fails both on the road and with the vehicle parked
Thanks you!
Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian a new siemens vdo brand high pressure pump was assembled
the fault p0087-00 appeared before now it no longer appears
in the diagnosis machine the pressure at 2500rpm is more or less 50000kpa when cold
when it starts to fail hot it goes halfway
and as I said, you cool the high pressure pump with a water hose and the pressure is maintained and the car does not fail
I'm waiting for the fuel rail pressure sensor to see if it reads wrong in that rpm range and that's why the car fails...
Thank you very much Christian!!
I solved the problem!!
was the engine ecu (PCM)
I imagine that when the alternator died it broke some component of the ecu
thank you!!
We don't really know, but we think the dealer would have probably changed the steering column anyway. 🙋♀️ Vera

supper video wieder !

👍🙋♀️ Vera
Did you ever find out what the starting issue was? My discovery is experiencing a similar fault
Send Christian an email. 👍🙋♀️Vera
great video guys from UK what icarsoft scan reader are you using please? thank you
We use the OBDii 930 🙋♀️ Vera
nice video
New glow plugs and a wurth diesel injecter cleaner added to the fuel tank.. This will clean the injector spray pattern to specs
Excelente video.....👌👌👌👌🤙🤙🤙🤙💯💯💯💯
Do you have a recommandation for a Injektoren testing Kit of maybe an affiliate Link?
No, ours is a cheap Chinese Amazon kit. They change constantly. Christian
At 10:22 my V6 always run like it…😢😢
Replace glow/heater plugs?
@@AndyK.1
I only mention it because a relative was having difficult starting issues from cold, and only after the glow plugs were replaced did the issue resolve.
She used BERU glow plugs £25-£30 for a set of 4.( not LR vehicle obviously )
Your *"don't make much of a difference"* statement confuses me; if some of the current glow plugs are faulty, then how could replacing with a new set not make much difference?
As I understand it, a diesel engine is first started from cold by pre-heating the cylinder combustion area to encourage/promote first initial combustion from the mechanical compression of fuel/air in the cylinder head, after which the heat from the previous combustion is retained allowing the next successive combustion upon compression to ocurr.
I do not know of any other diesel engine that does not require glow plugs in order to start above 0*c; so they must be required and are important.
I would be interested in hearing your reasoning why they *"don't make much of a difference above 0degC"*
was hat er denn da hinten am Ersatzrad verbaut?
Das ist sein Fahrradträger von Yakima. Die Räder werden damit am Oberrohr aufgehängt. 🙋♀️ Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian Danke Vera
Would you like a holiday in North wales I have nice caravan for you to stay in. An hour or 2 assessing my discovery 3 is all i ask. 😅
😅👍🙋♀️
Clever Vera lol
two weeks without a vid...😰. i hope everything is okay
I have a LR3 and it is leaking diesel and the driver site is wet of water
Oh my, I hope you can get it sorted out, soon. We have a video about one cause for the water leak here ua-cam.com/video/TLmG8xjA0q0/v-deo.htmlsi=DmsaOTpe_t949oZd🙋♀️

are you affraid when vera is driving, it looks like you are close to rip the handle from the roof ...
He won't admit it, but he is a terrible passenger. 😅👍🙋♀️ Vera
All you need to fix a defender is a channel lock, some tooth picks a big hammer, and a tube of grease. And you don’t even need a manual, unless you want to rebuild the injector pump. 😂 also you can get away with only one opposable thumb on your non dominant hand, but two makes it easier.
👍😂😂😂🏆
