Back in the 70’s I made one and used it as a diaper bag.
I did lots of hand embroidery on it , but I like to see your interpretation.
I bought a very large of mend jeans years ago with the plan to make a denim purse .
I think I’d like to have fringe along the sides but my inspiration stops there.

Just to add to your embellishment list, you can trap threads, yarns between two layers of Water Soluble paper, you can stitch lines, curves etc, then rinse and you have the most beautiful net, this work including metallic threads looks fab. Just an idea for you if you are not familiar with it. 💖💖💖

Adding a temporary paper/fiber layer between your presser foot and the lace will prevent it from being sucked into your feed dogs. It’s sold as stabilizers and a common brand is Pellon. There are knit, woven and non-woven kinds, plus tear away, dissolvable and glue on kinds, in all different thicknesses! Other sewing/ quilting videos on UA-cam will have suggestions for what kind to use with doilies. Have fun and enjoy!

Wow! Those old doilies look beautiful on you. We called doilies dust collectors; because, when you picked them up dust was left on the objects in the same patterns of the doilies that had been laying on them. Doilies made dusting extra hard work (plus, the doilies had to be washed, starched, and blocked to use again). Mom had me making them when I was a young teen. I never used any doilies in my homes, after I left my parents home. However, I do have some small doilies that I have been saving to applique on to a free style quilt.
Yes paper piecing, like it says in another comment works fine but there is also something where you do not need to fiddle with stitches, using Water Soluble Paper. It has many uses, and give that kind of support when you are stitching not only lace, but threads and loose materials (I do mixed media, use it a lot) that could "fall" and get trapped in the sewing machine. You can draw patterns on it. Beauty of that material is that it dissolves in contact with water. After finishing your piece, rinse by hand until all the paper is dissolved and you can wear it immediately, leaves no residue. Thanks fot the tutorial to work on summer dresses! 💖💖💖

I made a vest made from a tee shirt decorated with crochet doilies several years ago. I still have it and love it. I actually crocheted the motifs myself. I used a different process but for the life of me can't remember what I did.

It’s called paper piecing. You need to use the smallest straight stitch so the paper is more perforated to remove the paper easier. Some paper will stay in but after it’s washed the paper will be gone.

You are absolutely amazing Tracy!! At 63 I am on a new journey and full of ideas! Since losing 56 pounds over the last year, I have been watching all your videos on how to upcycle clothing. I gave up trying to use patterns (yuck!!) and you simplify everything. Using a piece of clothing as a shell makes sewing life sew 😉 much easier. Even bag making is enjoyable again! I told my husband, you can never have enough doilies 😅Also, I wanted to share the tool kit I have for helping get the presser foot over shifting bits and bobs as you are sewing... Position & Press Silicone Tools by The Gypsy Quilter. These are life saving & I keep the one at my machine at all times. Hope this helps 🥰

A person could do something similar, taking inspiration from your vest, by using lace fabric and or fabric scraps that work harmoniously together. Best wishes on your marriage. 💕Your vest and all of your creations are lovely. Like you, I enjoy repurposing items, chopping up garments, over-dyeing textiles including prints.

I love the way you arrange everything you touch so artistically, Traci. For example, the butterfly is not centered on the plainer doily, and you have added the braided tassels with uneven lengths. There is some magic in that and other non symmetric elements. I'm going to need more Traci therapy, because I want to use non symmetric arrangements, but I find that I can almost not make myself do that, even though it looks beautiful. May I have some strange form of OCD. 😊
