“It’s riding a bit lower than usual, I think there might be a hole”
Top notch intro 😂
It's a low rider it's supposed to do that
It really was an awesome intro 😂
Came here to say the same thing. 😂😂😂
Those mosquitoes are straight from hell! I could see and hear them in the video. Keeping calm and collected while an army of mosquitoes and flies are attacking you is probably the biggest challenge. They are the most relentless creatures on earth. Great video! 👍
Not really if you cover yourself with mud. Jump in water in morning
Seriously…F the Canadian mosquitoes. They’re the absolute worst!
There are fish that swim along the shore in search of food. It is possible to construct a “fence” perpendicular to the shore that leads into the mouth of the M-trap. The fence directs swimming fish into the trap and makes bait more effective.
Great addition!!!
@@TheBearEssentialsman can you build a permanent bushcraft camp❤.. appreciate it😊
Do you mean parallel?
@@steamer2k319 Ive seen fish cruising the shoreline at night, right up against the shore ambushing. I think Doug means the fence comes straight out from the entrance, pointing toward the deeper water. So any fish cruising deeper gets led into that entrance! 100% going to try this in a future video!
I love how you kept your good spirit and humour throughout the video ! You give such good vibes, love it !
You really think its real. He made it sink himself for the video.
"riding a bit lower than usual" 😂😂😂
You are sorounded with alive and deed trees Any dummies can survive there

I would love to see more videos like this from you, i also never seen the bowdrill technique that actually worked!
Hey sure!! The feedback seems to be pretty good on this video, so maybe I will make another where I go to a spot which actually has some good fish haha.
Can do some catch and cook’s and a different friction fire technique too!
Wow, I loved watching you use the bow drill fire! Can't wait to try it on the next camping trip! I also loved how you patched the canoe - ingenius : ) Thanks DJ
You Are 🎉❤ Amazing . I'm spiritual the earth is a massive healer ❤
Wish this video dropped on Tuesday before I headed out lol I haven't decided what I like more .. learning from your videos or your one-liners! Brother, you crack me up 🤣Great video, thank you for all you do! You are greatly appreciated.
Hahah!! Can’t wait to see your vid brother, and hey, I always throw one or two in there just to keep it from getting tooooo serious 😅
I love frog legs especially cooked over a camp fire lol. So I probably would of made a gig/spear when it started getting dark. And then made a little fire torch and commenced to stalking the bull frogs. You can also get worms and use a stick and your fishing line and hook and dangled it in front of them to catch them
I’ve got to try the fishing for frogs trick!!
Any good ways to cook em?
@@TheBearEssentials zatarans Louisiana Cajun fish fry, that is the best breading to fry them in that I've found in stores. Some people online have some really good recipes to mix up for breading them in but if you want minimal effort and good taste the Louisiana Cajun fish fry breading is the best to me
Love your videos, you totally remind me of myself and things I did 40 years ago. Here’s a freebie for you. In that situation sleeping… take your socks off and wear them as mitts. Put your boots back on. Take your underwear off and use it as a headnet and pray to God nobody runs into your campsite in the early morning. Great stuff. Keep at it.
Thanks DJ! Awesome challenge brother!👊🏻👍🏻 Appreciate you ! God Bless 🙏🏻
Wouldn't even think of that scenario without my Bear Essentials Buck Saw & Diamond sharpening wallet !!! Lol...!!!!
Eyyyyyyyy!! If I could like this comment twice I would !!
@@TheBearEssentials Thanks again DJ!!! Oh...I received a $10 e-gift card...will have to do some more shopping @ Bear Essentials !!!
Great watch, it could have been 40 mins longer.. lol very best 🍻
Thank you!!! Will do some more for a few more days and can make them even longer for ya!
Modern day Survivor man.
wow an actual survival vhallenge without the politics. Nice!
Great job showing us how to make it overnight on an island, without a Fire steel, and make repairs to a canoe leak. Thanks for cutting the video down to a reasonable time! I need the Fire steel crutch, so I make sure it’s in the bag.
Make you a makeshift gig for bull frogs. Food in the wilderness is plentiful if you know where to look.
Fantastic survival video my brother 😊 It's always so easy & joyful learning from you the skills that are needed to make it through an extreme situation. You're a great teacher 🥰 Thanks DJ 😁 Take care 💪🏻
People smarter than me would have made a "wick" instead of spending all those calories making fire the next day. How long did that take you anyway? Me, about 45 minutes! And props for not fake-catching a fish you brought with you like some other channels do, ha!
Good vid. ...It isn't necessary to touch everything what will u find. 😉✌
Great video! I should probably add a small tin box to my kit.
Ya! You can use it to make Charcoth too. I sell them with a few items on my site too
A wonderful adventure and that explains the damage to the canoe. Lots of good skills shown and explained.
Awesome as always. Where did you get that awesome hooded wool sweater?
Nate
Glad you enjoyed it Nate! That sweater was actually from Peru, I got it back in 2014 lol, still serves me well. Best $15 ever spent!
@@TheBearEssentials Nice!
A good video. Loved the part about building the fire drill and using the canoe for a shelter. BTW: food was at hand. All you needed to do is tie your knife to a limb and use it to spear some of the bigger bull frogs (not the little guys you filmed). Frog legs are delicious roasted over a camp fire. And you could have chummed the remains of the frogs out around your bait. It might have helped bring in a fish. Any way, thanks for the video.
Cool video mate, thanks for the upload. Like how you repaired you canoe.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm glad - and lucky - it worked out!
Evergreen tree sap. If you cook it down, You can make about the same sealer that the Indians used on their Birch bark canoes! Problem solved, happy paddling... uh, did you say BULLFROG neighbors?🤔🍽
Awesome video with real-life scenarios.
Healthy lifestyle outdoor activities is the best
What a great feeling to get that fire going .
The best!!
Great vid DJ! It turned out wicked! Hard up on the fish, but that’s the real survival experience! Great job buddy! 👍🏻🎣
Oooo I LOVE white pine tea! First had it at Genesee Country Village and Museum. I live in the country, surrounded by woods, but haven't found a white pine yet to get more needles, but i haven't tried very hard looking either.
And every time there was a frog, I'm shouting at my phone to you: "FROG LEGS!! FROG LEGS!" When i was a kid, my sisters and i captured several nice bullfrogs and cooked up the legs on a camping trip. Tasted like chicken 😁
Hahahaha!! Frog legs!! Great idea!!!
I think I’ll be doing a longer trip soon and will dive into eating those! I’ve only ever done it once - do you have any good recipe for me?? 😁
@@TheBearEssentials As a matter of fact, YES, yes I do! As a historian, I LOVE old cookbooks. I have a 1909 edition of the Washburn-Crosby Gold Medal Cookbook, acquired thru my hubby's grandmother. On page 29, I have THREE recipes for Frog Legs! Here's the most simple one:
"Frog Legs: The green marsh frogs furnish the best hams, as they are more tender and have less of the strong muddy flavor. They are generally liked fried. Pare off the feet and truss them by inserting the stump along the shin of the other leg. Put them with salt, pepper and lemon juice to steep for an hour, then drain and roll in flour, then in beaten egg and in fine bread crumbs. Fry to a light brown in hot fat. Serve with fried parsley."
Now, here's some other fun stuff: I want you to do a Google search for this: "Henriette Davidis' practical cook book internet archive" (the quotation marks aren't necessary, and yes, that's the way it is spelled, and the last two words are the site the book is located on-the Internet Archive). It should be the first thing that pops up. When you get to this free online historical cookbook (The subtitle should be: "German national cookery for American kitchens : a practical book of the art of cooking as performed in Germany"), go to page 228. And BOOM, you'll have a whole chapter with recipes for Turtle Soup, Snail Soup, Snails in Sauce, Snail Salad, Ragout of Frog Legs, Frog Leg Pie, Roast Badger, Bear's Paws, and even Roast Beaver Tails!!
And may I add, I think your subscribers would love a collab with perhaps a UA-cam channel that does wilderness survival and/or wilderness foraging. I remember seeing a PBS series one time of a chef who teamed up with a foraging specialist, and they foraged wild stuff, then the chef made a gourmet meal from it all. It was REALLY unique and interesting. I see there's a channel called The Wooded Beardsman, and it looks like he has killed and cooked some pretty interesting things! I'm sure there are other channels that you might already know of that would be a great fit for that kind of collab, if you were so inclined. In any case, I can't wait to see if you end up cooking something 'interesting' on your next trip, lol!
Always learning new things from you. Shame you didn't catch a fish but great tip on the old can of pebbles. Look forward to the next one 🙂
from Malaysia.. awesome video
Cool video! Learned some new stuff.
Just my own 2 cents: I'd focus completely on that fire before ever expending energy on fish. If you don't get that fire, you can't cook the fish and you can't rehydrate without the risk of getting sick. That sun moves mighty fast in the sky when daylight is essential to getting something done.
Excellent point! I was (fairly) confident in the bowdrill fire starting! But waaaay more excited for the fishing 😅
The intro be reminding me of pirates of the Caribbean
I appreciate the dedication and enthusiasm you bring to sharing this experience with us. I’ve always enjoyed your knot-tying videos, and survival gear and tips, and this video just put you to the top of my list. Kudos brother, keep up the awesome work
Wow thank you so so much. Going to try to do a longer one soon!
Really enjoyed this! Great job!
Nice tip on the white pine needles and identification 👍 i learned something new.
Frog guts and torn tiny fish would be perfect bait. Try more than one line.
Mama,mama,,cuuuaap🤭
This was an awesome video. Great job making the most out of a tough situation, and handling it with a positive attitude. It’s also cool to see how much better you are with the bow drill!
Survival man vibes and I like it. I’m not going to drop some hate like I see the couch potatoes did. You went out there did this and brought humor along for the ride. Good for you bro. Keep them coming. Camera work will get better along the way. Next video let’s go!
Unreal, this comment is fantastic. No worries will improve in many aspects as always. You’re awesome, and thanks for watching!
You're a great teacher. You should open a survival school. Love your style bro.
I appreciate that! Thanks so much.
On here I can affect many more people I think, one day maybe I’ll do a trip with peeps tho!
I always like to use a small amount of dried rabbit, deer, elk or even moose droppings in my pitch glue. I call it “poo glue” and find that the fibers in the droppings help the the “glue” to bond stronger due to the additional strength of the processed fibers 👍🏼
This is a really great way of making the glue! Apparently animal fat is another good addition. I suppose it all depends on what you have and how brittle vs flexible you need it. Thx for the comment
Nice ❤❤❤
You rock, dude! Can’t wait to buy a bucksaw
I love chewing on wintergreen leaves.
I love camping and bushcraft its awesome what we can do with a little bit of stuff and a will to get it done
You got a fish 🐟 Oh, yeah too big. 🥴
This really smart guy on TikTok told me that you can use melter resin and charcoal to patch up leaking canoes
So would that tiny fish actually be edible? Say you had to stay more time, how would you prepare it? Or is something that small better used as just bait?
Mm not really worth it to eat that tiny guy. If you had a whole bunch, maybe. And yes it’s edible but truly not really worth it.
If you had a bunch, maybe, but I would have opted to use it as bait and try to get crayfish or brook trout!
@@TheBearEssentials awesome, thanks for the info!
Pine sap is frequently used by bushwackers to patch holes in a boat, cano ...
Note to self: Never put yourself into a position where you could end up stranded on an island with nothing, no supplies
my way is to just always have suplies
Find pine sap and make some pitch. You'd be out by nightfall.
Did you watch the video? Haha
Surviving alone on an island with only three items following a canoe accident is a profound test of human ingenuity and endurance. This experience underscores the importance of preparation, resourcefulness, and the will to survive.
You are awesome and absolutely right! Thx for the comment!
9:48 Should we show him doctor ear excavation videospulling outallsorts of critters hidding inside the ears? OOF
You've got a whole lake full of water!
You have to purify it, there are parasites and bacteria - especially giardia, which will make you very very sick.
Use pitch on both sides of the hole for a better seal
Awesome stuff man. The pitch patch is definitely something I never thought of and I am glad I can now add it to the memory bank
Good channel. I enjoyed.
Thanks for watching!
Nice techniques! I remember using the pine pitch patch myself, but instead of mixing in black char, I spread the pitch first then hit it with a coating of white ash powder. It creates a pretty smooth hard surface. But it might not have worked in this case because you needed it to be hardened on both sides. I also would have "smoke bathed" before sleeping, hoping that might help keep the bugs away. And why, oh why, didn't you bank your fire instead of going through the bow drill hassle again the next day? Also would have fashioned a makeshift bobber to keep the worm and hook from simply sinking to the bottom. Don't know if that would have made a difference, but there was lots of wood available. I really enjoyed the video and agree it could have been longer and still interesting.
I'm here just for knots, but will be interesting to see Bear Grylls vs Bear Essentials 😂
I'm waiting for next.
Entertaining with some good info thereinl
🤔 However, why would one want to end up on an island with only three items? 😏.
Again a very cool video buddy ! very cool to see you on a better weather ! ahah keep safe bro, cheers, see ya !
Eyy thanks a bunch Matt!!!! Hope to get out there with you one time brother!
@@TheBearEssentials Hope too buddy, if bushcraft is still allowed in our countries ? lol
I mean...in my country,this would have several issues/problems.
Everything are soaking wet. Really wet .
And its COLD .
And you can fish for days, with no fish.
Eat able plants , not really ...its to cold .
But ! We will not be to thirsty ,its a lot of water, very clean.
And we dont have many dangerous bugs and critters. (But then again, we wont get a lot of protein from critters either).
Sigh...
Imma bit jealous , about your temperatures, the sources for food , and the easy access .
When you took the worm, the salamander lost the dinner it had stashed for later 😢
A couple of those bull frogs would have made a fine meal. Maybe even enough to give you strength to swim the short distance to the other bank and walk to the truck. LOL
Fishing line and hooks but no lighter or ferro rod? Interesting.
It was a planned challenge :) and I wanted to get my canoe back instead of ditching it ofcourse. 😁
@@TheBearEssentials I still would have eaten the bull frogs. LOL
@@user-mx5dr5gj1egood call!! Any favourite recipe’s for em?? Next time I will.

Try out for Alone.. longest survivor with 10 items wins .... It's the no contact that gets people by about 80 days
I was an alternate on season 9, and hired as a survival consultant on season 10 :)
Awesome video dood! Love the content!!! Keep it up!
Cool video especially because you started a fire with basically nothing, major props! Though I would have more activity fished that worm if I wanted food. Also, I think the patch would work better from the outside for a long term hold. Maybe add a portion of your shirt with the sap to both sides to secure it in the long term.
Great call!! I think inside and outside would have been the ticket. I only did inside bc I truly had a hard time finding enough of the pitch, and didn’t know if the underwater patch would come off sooner than the above…
If there were paper birch on the island I would have made some birch tar, and used a bit of bark as a patch too.
Good idea with the shirt, never thought of that!
You did pretty well
- someone who did the same thing on minecraft
Love your videos. Always learning something useful. Thank you!
Thx for watching Victoria!!!
Thank for video
it might be a better idea to patch the hole from the outside, that way the force of the water is pushing the patch into the hull instead of trying to push it away from the hull, if that makes sense
Woah
I have always been womdering if there is a video where someone can show how to survive in the wild if you have food allergies. I have quite a few such as seafood and lactose intolerance and GERD. @The Bear Essentials Can you make a video about that?
It would be tough, you would have to hunt big game pretty much.
Plants, like cattail, and starchy roots etc yield such low calories. About 7 per ounce, so you’d have to be eating like 20lbs of this a day to sustain, inner bark, berries etc, it’s just not a huge inflow bc of the effort to gather as well.
Fishing can usually be a difference maker- or ofcourse, big game hunting.
Lactose wouldn’t be an issue out there, but all of this would entirely depend on your environment.
The best survival strategy in my opinion is to focus on water and actually not eat any carbs. Or minimal - so your body goods into ketosis and burns your fat stores. You can last a long time on that- you’ll lose 0.5-1lbs a day, but generally you can expect to survive 3 weeks like this and you’ll hopefully get reacted in that time. Shelter + water most important!
You actually put your boat back in the water to film it swamping......lol.
Yes. It’s an intro :)
And a survival scenario.
Use your knife cut a wood wedge n plug the hole 😂
brilliant
Facebook fact checkers.... say that's a reasonable amount of water in your canoe
Unless you plan on moving a lot, don't let the fire go out
Throw some mint leaves in your water for tea.
I did!! You didn’t watch it all, did you? 🤣
@@TheBearEssentials I m8ssed the mint!? Crap, I'm sorry.
sick
I learned some stuff that may come in handy one day! Thanks.😊
Where are you? In Northern Quebec and Ontario, water in lakes is pure, you don't need to boil it. Just stay far enough from the land, in the middle of the lake or river, and you're OK.
For sure, but I never want to take the chance - especially with beavers there and giardia
Nicely done! I'm now hungry... :)
Food is a major need. Hopefully next time you get enough to sustain you (remember, foraging can sometimes provide some food surprises!)
Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work!
Absolutely, in Labrador I went 9 straight days, covering 80km with a 60lbs pack before getting any food at all! You can last a long time without. About a month, even more if your idle.
Thx for the watch!
Frog leggs taste like chicken!
In my next vid I take your advice and hunt em!
Come on man, you're not stranded on some desert island and there's no water, you'll be fine, 😂lucky you.
Sounds crazy, I’ve never heard of a desert island before.
you should do more Survival
yeah he should
I will!! More coming up in a few weeks :)
If it's not stage you will need to build a shelter before anything else if you are stranded.
Generally no, the canoe would be fine to protect from elements. Water is the most important in this scenario. Summer rain or wind wouldn’t have done much to kill me - dehydration would. And building a shelter takes a lot of energy and water.
item #4 always with me....Duct tape
Honestly that’s a great call. I bet it would have done well to patch that canoe too tbh

Is there tree sap you can burn to create a seal for the hole in your boat? Or is that only with special tree sap?
Pretty much, the sap is sort of the viscous part - it’s the pitch that is more solidified that makes better “glue” when combined with charcoal or best case scenario- animal fat
