Bro, I'm South African and I have recreated your adventures in South Africa. Sadly I don't post but you inspired me to go out even more than I already did and just live of the land.
The yellow mushrooms are chanterelles and they are very tasty. The red one which you said you are not even touching is an edible russula mushroom. You are very unlikely to get poisoned on the mushrooms with "foam" instead of gills underneath but there are some with incredibly bitter or sharp taste that doesn't go away with cooking.
There are a few dangerous ones worth avoiding. I'm assuming he's in Czech Republic. People there get poisoned every year from wild mushrooms and some are experienced mushroom foragers, they just make a mistake. Best to be careful when new too foraging.
Not all russula mushrooms are edible. At least in the states they aren't. How do you know that one is? In the US, some of them can't he distinguished from each other without a microscope.
@@playerslayer91 In Europe they are much commonly eaten. I actually ate some exactly like the one in the video today. There are varieties that can cause GI tract distress if eaten raw, but I always boil them. Some people dislike the taste but I think they make excellent pastry stuffing.
Finally video from Europe. Field day finally matched his outfit with Czech tourists😂. High socks, shorts and sweatshirt. The only thing missing is sandals 😂.
I'm from Poland and we have long family tradition of mushroom picking. Basically, if you don't know them and you're in the survival situation, the rule of thumb is: pick only those with sponge underneath and avoid the ones colored red, but my honest advice is: better do not pick them at all. There are mushrooms which can destroy your liver after consuming only few grams and those are often mistaken with edible ones.
I have a question: can't worms cross-contaminate edible mushrooms since they also can eat ones that are poisonous to humans? I was kinda worried about cross-contamination when field days pointed out the "worm lines" in the mushroom stem.
@@anonymousacid9160 That's super interesting question, honestly. I don't think it is a problem, as those can't probably travel very far, but who knows :D In the "normal" situation it doesn't really matter. If mushroom has worms inside, you basically do not take it. First of all, it's disguisting 😃 second, they can infect other mushrooms in the bucket
That rule of thumb is horrible 😂. Spongy usually means boletes, which all aren't edible. There are toxic look alikes for most edibles. My rule of thumb is not to eat anything in the wild unless you can positively identify it 100%. That goes for mushrooms, plants & animals.
@@wamlartmuse17 yeah, but poisonous boletes (at least those existing in my country also have red colour of sponge or stem so my rule isn't that stupid :p). There's also Tylopilus felleus which looks like edible one but it's bitter. But basically, you're right, you should avoid mushrooms or plants you don't know :)
The yellow ones that you said you think were edible, are delicious chanterelles! Probably much better than that birch bolete you cooked up 😅😅 that was a bit too worm filled. The stalk is actually one of the better eating parts when it’s not full of worms! The first couple of ones seem like some type of Russula sp, some people in Europe eat them if they don’t taste spicy.
as long as you spit it out you can taste pretty much any mushroom even the poisonous ones, the only one in the world I'm aware of that you shouldn't even touch is one in china that looks like fire coral. Mushrooms aren't as dangerous as most people think.

@hiphop935 buddy has NEVER been outside. Mushrooms can grow in single or multiple. Half the time a mushroom could grow so far away from any other clumps
Pike have eyes on top of their head and are generally always hanging out on the bottom water level and are looking up towards the surface. They cant see very well if something is directly in front of them or below them. That might be what fish were right in front of you ignoring your lures (which you put near the bottom right in front of them). Pike go after big topwater lures. You want a lure that resembles a frog or a snake or a rat or a duckling or some small land creature. Freshwater is around the forest (or at least surrounded by land), so the easiest prey item for freshwater predatory fish are not small fish, it is actually small land creatures that have to swim into the water. Thats a huge difference from salt water. Pike, pickerel, musky and that whole family of fish also eat things that seem way too big for them to possibly swallow. A 40 cm pike would go after a 20+ cm lure if the lure is on the surface and splashes around enough. The bigger the better. You can also use live bait, but about 60 cm up the line put a bobber so the live bait has to stay near the surface in the strike zone for pike. Edit: freshwater fish are also more accustomed to murky water so they rely on sensory organs more than their eyes compared to most saltwater fish. There are lures that have a shaker or marble in them that the freshwater fish will be more interested in, but splashing on the surface with a big topwater lure will definitely do it, too. Spoons and shiny things can still catch fish, but they are much more effective in salt water compared to fresh water. You probably attracted all those fish to you with the fly rod and the action of your swim bait then the fish couldn’t see your lure or they didnt think it was big enough to be worth going after.

Mushrooming is a big part of my culture. In Czechia, it's almost a tradition. If you have never been out, hunting for mushrooms, as a kid, you didn't have a good childhood. I'm going tomorrow, it's right after a storm, temperatures will dropped down yesterday, and tonight will also be colder, whilst humid. Perfect time to go give it a shot. Also, gather more of them, cut into them. If wormy - dry, and use later (can make mushroom powder - great for stews). The nice ones you can eat. I think you could try and make a traditional Czech Bramboračka (potato stew). One of its main component are mushrooms, just like the one you found. Mushrooms with gills are tricky, and edible ones are not so abundant. The ones with pores are easy to identify. If they don't taste good when raw (small bite, check for bitterness/other unpleasant things), toss them. If pass, take them to a camp, and identify them. Or ask someone with more experience. Experience, and being cautious is the key, not to get poisoned.
@@zurtacoin5624 I didn't eat them, but I did find a lot of them. And people will pay just to know of such a location. They also grow just in our garden. No cow manure as Eminem says.
@hiphop935you are indeed tripping dude… mushrooming is completely normal in some parts of the world, mainly in Europe. I am doing it my whole life since I am like 5, so do many others…

The little orangey yellow ones looked like Chanterelle mushies. They're pretty yummy when you cook them up. Best way to tell if they're actually Chanterelles is to break them open. If the inside looks stringy like string cheese, it's a Chanterelle. :D

People always assume colorful mushrooms are the dangerous ones, and alot are, and infact red one you found is called a sickener. But because colorful mushrooms are generally easier to identify than your average brown parasol, it wouldn't hurt to learn to ID a few of the more distinct edible ones. As for the one you decided to eat, is some type of bolete (I belive a bronze bolete), and happens to be edible. But there are many pored mushrooms many of which are also poisonous, though pores are a good distinction to help ID them.
Big Matt, thanks for another great video, get over that illness you've got you don't want to spread it to your beautiful family!! Be Safe and enjoy your adventure, peace ✌ out for now!!
Usually you should fish for zander on the bottom.Jigging mostly but you can find some special deep minnow, shad, jerk.Rapala makes some good lures for Zander, have a look
Welcom to Europe!! Wonder which country you are in right now. You probably can't fish without a permit or wildcamp. Depending on the country, never eat mushrooms if don't know anything about them. Even experienced guides are very carefull with what they eat. This time of the year there are alote of black raspberries as you ate at 6:25. You can probably fish crowfish with little pieces of fish and rope. Just choose almost still water, small rivers. And most of all, ENJOY AND HAVE FUN!! grtz from Belgium
Its not a decent roe, more like a below average one. But its true, they are a relatively small species of deer with big males rarely getting up to 50-60 pounds. @2:15 from what little I’ve learned about forging in the past you can’t eat mushrooms that have gills. Mushrooms with gills = poisonous. I could be wrong tho 🤷♂️
Love to see you in Europe bud.. mushrooms! Field look out for the ‘Laetiporus sulphureus’ typically known as the ‘chicken of the woods’ it can grow larger then your head and resembles the taste of chicken. A great addition to an epic wild meal. Peace bro, mad respect
Matty I think that mushroom is called a bay bolete which are edible. There are actually quite a few edible mushrooms in Europe. That yellow one was also edible if I’m not mistaken it’s called a chanterelles and they have a mild nutty flavor that’s almost apricot like. But don’t quote me, I’d still double check just to be on the safe side. Here’s to more European videos 🎉❤
Yellow mushrooms you found at 30:22 are called Chanterelle, those and Porcinis are probably one of the best tasting mushrooms. We usually saute them on garlic/onions etc., and then either add egg or two for quick mushroom and eggs dish ^^ But you can also eat them raw, where you can't eat that bad boy you found at 31:38 Leccinellum griseum is not edible raw, but cooked is perfectly fine, considered as 2nd tier mushroom here due to it's discoloring on touch/being on air, but it's quite good tasting mushroom imho...
You should come to UK do a collab with atomic shrimp. He know like every edible plant and mushroom in the UK and loves exploring and foraging! Also a collab with geowizard would be awesome!
Great vid as always. Epic adventure, stunning views, Funny FDYs lol ♥️ Short story of the Coughing lady made me beyond angry 😅 Glad your well enough to be out in nature fam 💪🏻
At 30:14 you found chanterelles which are edible and before that im pretty sure they were a mushroom called the charcoal burner (aslo edible) The large mushroom is a tybe of boletus or cepe ( there are some toxic ones)
At around 31 minutes in....that mushroom is called a King Bolete. The identifier is the sponge like bottom of the cap. Good eating and very meaty . Good find.
I was so excited when I saw that youre in Europe! Some thoughts on that fishing stuff: With cristal clear water you could fish with a float and a worm as bait. Most fish will eat the worm. You will most definitely catch zero pike on a fly. Try finding spots with grass or a fallen tree in the water. That’s where they usually hide. Zander hunt mostly in the evening and night and are very picky eaters. But they taste great. Their cousins are easier to catch. The big school of fish hunting were probably perch. They taste great too. If you want to catch a fish that puts up a big fight go for carp.
gotta be 100% sure with mushrooms, theres so many out there and poisonous lookalikes that will kill you or make you very sick, ive made this mistake myself, so warning to everyone, stay safe out there doggies 🤙
field days its so nice seeing you in europe experiencing what has been a normal nature experience for me for my whole life! i hope you have tons of fun. the orange mushrooms were chanterelles and they are the best the most tasty mushrooms, i hope you try them another time! cant wait for the next video.
For the record, Mulberries are trees, that was a Blackberry. Possibly a invasive Himalayan Blackberry, as they're absolutely EVERYWHERE, at least here in the Pacific Northwest. I imagine they have them all over in Europe too.
Hey man, you should prep and research on your area a bit more. Also it's very important to stay cleanly when prepping food in the wild. You should get rid of stuff like your rag, carry sanitizer, avoid eating shrooms with worms and avoid eating on upturned rocks. 😅Be more cautious when your body is sick especially when exploring uncharted wilderness when you just had a newborn kid bro. Take care love the adventures
I'm from Central Europe aswell, close to where you hunted. I'm an expert for wild mushrooms. Just not for their english names. The one you ate was a bit old and I would have let it stay in the forest. But yea, it was edible. The ones with the spongy under-part are not all edible. Most types are and none of them are a great danger to your health but there are a few exceptions that are rather rare to come by, causing stomach issues or simply tasting as bitter as childhood medicine and therefor are not recommended to be eaten. The yellow ones you showed were in a better condition and are edible. They taste great. Most other stuff you showed were so called "Täublinge" in German. Specifically Schwarz-Täublinge you found a couple of times. Those would not have been poisonous but are generally not advised for consumptions because of how bad they taste. You also came across a young Perpilz on your journey. It was, chronologically the 3rd mushroom the video showed. Those are actually pretty good! We enjoy them a lot. For beginners those are a bit tricky since they can be misidentified for a pretty dangerous poison shroom called the Pantherpilz. But if you get more experienced with those two types and don't accidently mix them up, I'd recommend trying those. Your mindset was correct. If you can only identify with 99% certainty then you shouldn't eat a wild mushroom. There are really dangerous ones out there that can kill you even when you only eat small amounts. Enjoy your stay in Europe! :)

I seriously love your videos. Always waiting for them to come out!!! Thanks for what you do! NH United States!
Let’s go field days in Europe 🇪🇺
Matty I think that mushroom is called a bay bolete which are edible. There are actually quite a few edible mushrooms in Europe. That yellow one was also edible if I’m not mistaken it’s called a chanterelles and they have a mild nutty flavor that’s almost apricot like. But don’t quote me, I’d still double check just to be on the safe side. Here’s to more European videos 🎉❤
Sunday funday!!! Love waking up in the Midwest to some field day action!!
Yellow mushrooms you found at 30:22 are called Chanterelle, those and Porcinis are probably one of the best tasting mushrooms. We usually saute them on garlic/onions etc., and then either add egg or two for quick mushroom and eggs dish ^^
But you can also eat them raw, where you can't eat that bad boy you found at 31:38 Leccinellum griseum is not edible raw, but cooked is perfectly fine, considered as 2nd tier mushroom here due to it's discoloring on touch/being on air, but it's quite good tasting mushroom imho...
You should come to UK do a collab with atomic shrimp. He know like every edible plant and mushroom in the UK and loves exploring and foraging! Also a collab with geowizard would be awesome!
Great vid as always. Epic adventure, stunning views, Funny FDYs lol ♥️
Short story of the Coughing lady made me beyond angry 😅
Glad your well enough to be out in nature fam 💪🏻
WELCOME TO THE FOREST!! 🎉
Those aren't mulberries, but any of the berries that have that shape are great to eat 😊
I'm pretty sure they're a wild black berries
@@RobertMorrow-pi7wq or black raspberries. Either way, they're all delicious!
much love all the way from South Africa been watching you for four years keep going !!
Don't know about mushroom worms but always considered peach worms as peach too.
LETS GOOO
I MISSED THIS VIDEOS MAN!!!!
Good find.
Did u start trippn on the walk back after that mushy 😂🤙🏽
Looks awesome dawgie have a great time all the best to your family.
Another great adventure doggie..when castings your fly rod. Only use the elbow.. pretend your holding a rag under your armpit..
Czech Republic is a beautiful country 😍 nice vid daddy dog 🐕 👍
You should come back to South Africa
Been watching you since the first episode in Indo an now seeing you fishing on a trip in Europe (I'm from Germany) is just epic dude!!!♥️
Finally in my terrain haha. Welcome back to Europe mate 🎉
The river you're fishing in is well known for good fish 😉
Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
gotta be 100% sure with mushrooms, theres so many out there and poisonous lookalikes that will kill you or make you very sick, ive made this mistake myself, so warning to everyone, stay safe out there doggies 🤙
Loving the new scenery, my favourite videos of yours were defo the Bali ones, would love to see you back there making videos there again one day
Dude, eating mushrooms you aren’t 110% certain of can make this your last video!
Or it could be one of the best times of your life 🤣🤣🤣
When I saw him coughing at the end I initially thought it was from eating a dodgy bolete
Love the forest content!!

5:00 FEILD DAYS IS THE BEST
field days its so nice seeing you in europe experiencing what has been a normal nature experience for me for my whole life! i hope you have tons of fun. the orange mushrooms were chanterelles and they are the best the most tasty mushrooms, i hope you try them another time! cant wait for the next video.
He cooked the fish without cooking the fish 😂😂
Me: 😮😲😱
1:46 "is that a mushroom dude?" so good😂
Yes ❤️🇬🇧
For the record, Mulberries are trees, that was a Blackberry. Possibly a invasive Himalayan Blackberry, as they're absolutely EVERYWHERE, at least here in the Pacific Northwest. I imagine they have them all over in Europe too.
Saved me from looking at the same Netflix movies bro 🤙
The berries at 6:12 / 41:23 are blackberries which are invasive in many parts of europe, mulberries are longer in shape but look very similar.
🤓
😂😂😂
lol wtf shutup
Loving the bloopers at the end of each episode
Field days in Europe. Never thought I’d see that. Love the content bro!
