I just shot a feature film on this camera. Absolutely blown away by the image, pure poetry. You will need to spend 70k on an Arri to get a better image. I shot into the Ninja 5 at 5.9k RAW. 422, 10 bit 5.9k RAW out of a camera body you can get for 1,300 bucks!!!!!!! (I think it is actually 12 bit going into the Ninja) I was shooting GH5 before I came across this camera, but I will never go back to micro4/3rds after shooting full frame on this machine. My DP said exactly the same thing and is now selling his GH5's. You do get slightly more rolling shutter, because of the full frame, so you would have to design your shots differently for an action film, but I cannot say enough great things about the S5. I was shooting GH$ and GH% before this and have to tell every filmmaker out there, FULL FRAME is 10 levels above M4/3. Obviously, if you shoot sports, or want a faster burst rate for stills or higher frame rates for slow mo you choose a different camera, but for narrative filmmaking this camera is stellar. I could be tempted by the Red Komodo because if the global shutter, but I prefer the image and color science out of the S5. Highly recommended. Thanks for the review, but you might even have under sold this fantastic machine.
After seeing this video, and several others, I am glad I ordered the S5. I shot a feature with the GH5. So, I think I will be quite happy with the S5. Great video.
@@kostanew2806 The S1 is better for Stills because higher burst rate, the EVF, if you want it has that extra LCD on top and then there is that Fuji styled flip screen also the S1 just straight up feels like a Photo camera though these things shouldn't make much difference in buying decision
As an s1 owner the only thing that would bother me is seeing the focus of panasonic and the firmware updated to be focus on the s5, and the feeling that the s1 is neglected. Panasonic should make a full frame range finder style camera like their GX Micro 4/3 series or like the Sony A7c
4 роки тому+1
I had the GX7 and the GX8, since those years where Panasonic only had the M4/3 format I have dreamed of a fullframe with the design of the GX line, Sony was ahead of them, although it seems a camera with many debts, Panasonic should surprise and offer a product as it always does: balanced and more cerebral.
So tempting, especially since the A7 IV is still hard to get… but that autofocus… and the good lenses are fewer and more expensive than Sony’s so that money id save initially might be lost anyway 🤔
Brilliant video, it flowed really well :) I'm a long-term G9 user and this seems like a good upgrade while keeping the G9 as a B-cam. The ending made me smile btw lol Does it have the 6k photo mode?
Is there any noticeable difference in sharpness between the two cameras with the same lens and f-stop? Imaging-resource and dpreview studio samples show S1 significantly sharper than S5 at all ISOs for the same f-stop.
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.
Nice review! I really would like to get into full frame for my portrait photography business. I wish Panasonic had simply put a full frame sensor into a G9 body! It's still the best mirrorless camera body I've used. The S5 looks great but I would so miss the top LCD status panel. The S1 layout is more to my liking but it's such a brick!!! Like someone took a G9 and recast it from lead. Native L mount lenses are pretty hefty too -- Nikon's Z glass seems noticeably smaller. Nikon's Z6ii seems like my next best option but then I lose all the familiarity I have with the Lumix system. Woe is me 😂
I upgraded from the GH5 to the S5 and although the S5 its a great camera, I'm not comfortable shooting with it. The viewfinder is awful and impossible to nail focus with it. Visually there is no that much differences between the S5 and the GH5 but the Gh5 feels so much nicer and better ergonomically when working. With the S5 I found myself changing the shooter speed all the time by mistake and the grip doesn't feel as good as the gh5. Probably the S1 is a better camera, but I was concerned about the weight. I'm still considering changing it for the S1
and what did u do? My S1 just arrived today, Yeaap it feels heavier than my a7III before. I've got 14 days to test it out, do u enjoy using s5? I'll see whether I'll get used to that weight after sundays's weeding xD Anyway, I feel like having a solid camera, not a toy like a7III haha, but I'll check a comfort of use... :)

The S1/S1H is definitely noticeably better with stabilization. I think if S1 gets the same firmware updates as the S5, it will be so much more worth it... right in the footsteps of S1H but not needing the 2x price tag
Seems like a great camera. All the early reviews I saw on it were trashing it based on the AF which I guess that’s all that anyone cares about on UA-cam...
I dont understand why the S5 has better features for a cheaper price compared to the S1... wish the S1 had the better 4K codecs and v-log integrated, as well as anamorphic recording modes.
I can explain. Basically Panasonic was full of themselves when they released S1 and S1H, thinking people would buy them based on GH5 fame. But S1H was way overpriced and lacking some critical features they were probably going to add in an update while the S1 feature set was purposefully gimped to not sabotage S1H. The products thus flopped and Panasonic panicked, decided to forget about S1 and S1H and put all resources into developing a camera as cheap as they can called S5 but with features of S1H/GH5 and more, trying their hardest to get the GH5 owners to convert after their failed attempt with S1 and S1H. It may actually work, but unfortunately leaves owners of the S1 series with a bad taste in their mouth. If Panasonic have any integrity they will update the S1 with these features, but they won't, they already made S1 owners pay $200 for a v-log firmware update, while the S5 just comes with these features plus more and at a lower price point. Basically Panasonic have their heads up their arses, but the S5 is undoubtedly a nice feature rich camera.
I'm looking to buy the S1R but only after the firmware update for the S5 autofocus comes out. I don't shoot video too much and the autofocus on the S5 should work for me.
S1, S1H, S1R, S5, the Panny cameras don't display actual image on neither EVF nor LCD, landscape photographers will find it difficult using CPL filters, because when they turn the circular polarizer, the image in the EVF or LCD stays unchanged, it's rather difficult to find the best angel for the polarizer. Very frustrating .... Maybe by taking several images or by pressing the preview button several times......
