EP 064 - I bought a Yaesu Ft-891 from Facebook marketplace and was sold a faulty radio.
So i got scammed on Facebook marketplace , supposedly a good working radio, but it was not.
Glad it’s all sorted.
I’ve bought a few second hand radios from ebay in the past which turned out to be faulty including an FT847 from a very well known radio supplier which was also faulty. I repaired them myself (ex radio engineer). It’s the only way to be sure it’s fixed correctly.
yes sometimes its better to do the job yourself, at least you know its right.

The way I see it, when a company sells a product they are trying to make money. When an individual sells a product on an online web site, they're trying to get rid of it. There will be some people who honestly don't want something they own anymore and it may be easier to sell online. I bought a Cradlepoint router from an individual on Ebay and he advertised it as new in box. When I received it, I noticed that it was not shrink wrapped, but it had saran wrap around the box. The unit itself looked like someone cleaned it with Ajax or some other harsh cleaner. Now I buy only new products from reputable retailers.

This video just popped up to me as I've been research radios to get back on the air and reminded me of several years ago getting ripped off on a radio the was "working" but apparently my definition if much different. this has happened to me a few times now, sold one for parts on ebay, one I fixed and the other other I just lost out on with the seller threatening me with legal action because according to him I was l slandering him.. Now I'm thinking of not even going to the hamfest this weekend, maybe not even get back in to hamming. I can't really afford to buy new, but at least I shouldn't get scammed if I buy new. You're lucky to have fixed this. As for me I have a lot of thinking to do now. thanks
Not everyone is a scammer , there are many honest people , if you but second hand then maybe go and collect and see working .
I’ll never buy used, except in person. I see this same radio on Ebay all the time. Usually not even a ham selling it.
We can’t broadcast on 27.555 In the US. So odd seeing that frequency.

It certainly taught me a lesson , I buy tons of used cb radios and never had anything like this .
I've had same issue 4 years ago got a SSB radio from Facebook says all working 100% when I had it it wasn't transmitted properly 10 mill watts I did manage to fix it myself I would never buy Any HF radio of people who used it on FM on 27/81 as they all seem to use 100W on FM that's hell lots of wera and tear on the RF transistor. I know the feeling it gutted and it nice feeling you've fixed it.
Interesting so it’s better to stay under 50w on FM modes? I use my FT 891 at 20w across all modes mainly used for SSB
@@killerbites3963 yes it best keep it under 50 watts on FM and AM I've lots of radios came in my shank people been using full power on FM it just get to hot as FM are full continue carrier.

I got stung buying a yaesu ft100d that had all filters and txco taken out..... needless to say he never answered any my calls

IS 11 Meters an amateur band where you live? Great video on troubleshooting. I had some similar troubleshooting with an FT-891 I bought recently.

Nothing wrong with buying used, but stay away from eBay, Facebook, etc. Try to only buy locally or at a ham fest.
As low as the FT-891 is priced,one would be better off to buy it new.Unless I knew the seller,I’d never a used transceiver,unless it’s a low priced QRP transceiver.
Ebay is one of the best places to buy, if you want to have 30 days to test it fully and your leisure, ebay will have your back if the item is faulty, no issues with returns, seller pays for the return label.... I've spent multiple £10,000s, buying on ebay to resell it... Buy low sell high etc..

Hi i paid the going second hand price for this, so cheaper than new, but this could have turned out a lot worse.

The cap was fine im sure , just it shouldn't of been in there.

Are the HF transceivers that Yaesu and Icom manufacture like the Yaesu FT-891 are special export versions that transmit on the 27mhz CB band but not the ones shipped and sold in the USA? Or are hams and CBers in Europe know of a Ham Radio dealer in Europe such as in the U.K. who can do a special modification to these radios so G hat you can transmit on 27mhz?
Most modern digital radios have ways of "widebanding" , this usually means finding some components and removing/adding and a reset.Some retail sellers will do this if you ask upon purchace.

I have never understand the term "mint condition " what someones "mint condition " is not mine there never the same what people say are what they mean. All ways better if possible to test the gear in front of the seller then you and them are on the same line from the start.
Well we live and learn from these stupid mistakes.

If you are a ham operator Why are you on 27mhz band that definitely doesn't make any sense at all. Make up your mind man be a ham radio operator or be a cb radio operator.
