Gary Payton Guards Michael Jordan (26pts) ('96 Finals, Game 5)

- Gary Payton and the Seattle Supersonics turn the series back to Chicago as they win game 5. Payton scores 23 points (some of them ON Michael Jordan in a beautiful fashion), grabs 9 rebounds and hands out 6 assists. There aren't as many defensive highlights, since Jordan was double-teamed a lot, which made him try including his team-mates who unfortunately had an off-day. June 14, 1996.

don't let your love for jordan blind you about other player's greatness
That was back when winning a playoff game against Chicago was like winning the championship.
One of the few times u see Jordan flustered, hats off to the Glove
MJ still shot 50% against GP
@@dc4690It was the worst performance for Jordan out of the 6 Finals. He scored below his season average
Gary Payton NBA Legend!!
Best two-way PG of the 90's, the Glove. He was awesome.
this Seatle team was my favorite team in the 90s. Kemp was a beast
loved that sonics team, everyone in their prime.
Gary Payton always will be the best, Gary Payton always will be Seattle, thanks for all, from spain.
Spin it all you want, he got locked up by Payton. Amazing how his numbers went all the way back up against Utah in '97 (32.3/7/6 on 45.6% FG), including scoring 38 with whatever the hell he had in Gm 5. Those are excuses. And he didn't score 26 ppg against Payton...he didn't PLAY against Payton until Gm 4 (which is George Karl's biggest coaching mistake). When he did, he scored 23 (on 6 of 19 shooting), 26 (on 11 of 22 shooting), and 22 (on 5 of 19 shooting). So in actuality, he averaged 23.7 ppg on 22 of 60 shooting (36.67% FG) while averaging 20 shots per game when defended by Payton. In the first three games, he scored 31 ppg on 29 of 63 shooting (46.0% FG) while averaging 21 shots. In other words, he was MJ. Then Karl FINALLY puts Payton on MJ and the numbers fall dramatically.
True man.... George Karl really did make a bad decision not using Gary on him sooner... If that adjustment was made sooner this series would a been and absolute dog fight until the end...
Damn this game says so much about Paytons game
I'm impressed that they called fouls against Jordan
This game was the high point in franchise history besides the 1979 NBA Title
MAN I JUST REMEMBERED HOW BADASS GP WAS!
Gary was the greatest post up point guard of all-time, along with smack talker, and highest energy defensive player
gary payton was one of the best defensive point guard ever. People give me credits for his assist and offence known as the gloves, but his defense was superb
people forget the sonics won 64 games that season. I think they were a little intimidated against the bulls the first 3 games with all the hype around the bulls being the best team ever with the 72 win season. That sonics team matched up well with the bulls.
How could anyone not love the way Payton approached and played the game? GP all the way.
Gary played a monster of a game
not only did GP play excellent defense on offense he was great too that move on MJ at 2:23 is nice
Bronsexual
Damn how did the Sonics lose? Seattle needs a team again because they had some of the best supporting fans!
I watched nba 90s and GP was the best defender I ever saw in his prime. Ill never forget this series how Gary got under Jordan's skin and challenged him to the end
back when the fans were simply incredible
Jordan also shot 6/19 and 5/19 in games 4 & 6 respectively, and also shot around 41% from the field in the series- so yeah, what a defender GP is.
Wasn't Payton the defensive player of the year?
The only point guard ever to achieve DPOY
Impressive defense off the ball by GP
Gary Payton was my ALL TIME favorite Sonic. Wow. This brought back some memories.
Gary Payton was the best Jordan defender and slowed him down in the finals. However Jordan was missing wide open shots that defenders never give Jordan because he usually drains those shots. Also If I remember correctly didn't Jordan drop 45 on Payton the first game of the season the next year.
Exactly. I think Jordan adjusted his game after this series. He started taking what the defense gave him and was an even bigger monster in the midrange
MJ shot 50% against GP.
Now I know why they call him "the glove "
Damn u gotta have amazing endurance to keep up with Jordan defensively and still contribute on offense
Watching this gives me chills, how this city lost a NBA team is fucked up
Happy Birthday Gary!! Best perimeter defender of all time. Period.
Epic win, can't wait for game 6!
GP IS STILL MY FAVORITE
This was one of the best day's of my life.
Awesome video..as a kid growing up in Seattle this brings back many memories!
2 Hall of Famers going at it. Granted, one of them was the greatest to ever play, but this is great to watch regardless. Which we could have seen the shots the Jordan made, but this really showed how good of a player Gary Payton was.
Imagine a modern fastbreak team against these guys.
GP was great...glad he got a ring with the Heat in '06 he deserved it
4:57 look how fast he rotates back to MJ. Legendary
Gary Payton is so real
great game!... GREAT game!
R.I.P. Seattle Supersonics
GP BABY!! THATS WHY HE'S THE GLOVE!
One of my favorite games. Go Sonincs. you will be back someday.
Payton and Sonics defended the Bulls and MJ well!
sadly took 3 games for them to finally guard jordan properly and it was too late, 1 win and the bulls win the title.
Beautiful series. The Sonics were so tough that I have little doubt they'd run the Wade-James Miami Heat out of the building. This series was never a Payton vs Jordan matchup, because Payton was only on Michael single-coverage maybe 5 times the entire series lol. It was Payton and another defender (sometimes two, for the triple-team) that held Michael's numbers down somewhat. Their defensive rotations were executed brilliantly, and yet Jordan still got loose and found his teammates.
Whatchu talking about... I watched this series recently. Payton was hounding Jordan everywhere he went. He was doubled team often yes. But GP was man to man with Jordan many different times. And really gave Jordan a hard time.
RRoyce G .... Yep he did ... You can't stop Jordan, But Gary certainly slowed him down more than any player I've ever watched D him.... It's just a dam shame Karl waited so long to allow that match-up.... Not sure why you don't lock your best defender on Mike the entire series...
Yeah for real man!
funkyflights
In many cases it's the coaches issue of budgeting and balancing energy. Anybody who has to defend the athleticism and mobility of Jordan or the speed and cleverness of Payton will have to spend a hell of a lot of energy. That's fine for a defensive specialist but Payton was a valuable scoring option too.
crawlFace ... Payton was a ball of energy at this time... The guy could run a marathon and still ball ... You just gotta lock your best defensive player on Mike ...YOU just gotta... Payton would a made Mike's life difficult that entire series... You can't stop Mike but Payton certainly was frustrating him and doing something we've never seen... denying him the ball and making him work like hell to get it...
Both! They were like Stockton/Malone but a little more raw.
Lamar is simply showing us one of the greatest attempts to guard MJ that we have ever seen on the biggest stage, and I believe he did a pretty good job. My one point would be that, if any player besides Payton was guarding MJ the help defense wouldn't matter because he'd be able to get around anyone else, like Schrempf in the first game, so easily and pick the defense apart that way. Payton didn't allow him that first step.
And good point on Alvin and Sidney, great defenders I agree.
I went to that game. Gary looks great in these highlights, but Kemp was elevating 2 feet above others, and dropping J's in a World Jordon couldn't imagine. That was the Sonic's at their highest. Game 5, 1996
Kemp will always be my favorite player of all time. I still wear Kamikaze I's to this day. Still have 4 of my old Kemp jerseys. Still go back and watch highlights. Payton was phenomenal as well. Those two should have never split up. Money talks, though. Jordan will always be the greatest and he deserves it, but that Seattle team was no joke.
I this series I'd never seen Kemp play so well. Out of every player on the court, including MJ, Kemp was the best player on the court for this series.
"The Glove."
Jordan wasn't the finals MVP. Rodman was.
I agree, but the Stans won't admit it.
Cuz they're brainwashed stans.
+chitownkidd33 They stay on his dick. Can't think for themselves.
I love this series. 1. They tell us payton was injured so Karl only put him on Jordan from games 3-6? WTF???
2. Apparently it was the Sonics "zone" or hard doubles that stop Jordan. More bull, he just played like trash.
3. They make up excuses either way.
+chitownkidd33 I agree. Their wasn't no damn zone. Lots of single coverage on MJ with Payton, and he kept missing. The media and Stan's make up so many excuses for him. Imagine this series being played in the social media era. The fans would've ridiculed MJ for his poor shooting.
Is that Marv Albert commentating? If so, he sounds so young! Anyway, much respect to the GOAT. And I know that LamarMatic has the utmost respect for him too. Great video of some great players playing a great game.
People forget that Sidney Moncrief and Alvin Robertson were also guards that won the award
Damnit, I wish SO BADLY that I could find an upload of this full game (with the English broadcast)
This was a great finals, my favourite of all-time I think.
I remember watching this on t.v.....wow I have goosebumps.
The Glove, the greatest of all time!
6:46 didn't know Eric Snow was on that team
Best defensive player on Jordan was Vernon Maxwell. Jordan said this a few times. Also there was a rumor that Maxwell wanted to fight him after a game.... Mad Max was insane.
Mad Max was a nice player but I think two toughest defenders that used to guard Jordan pretty good was Gary Payton and Ron Harper when he was on Cleveland back in the late 80's /early 90's...Gerald Wilkins was solid as well
There is no greater revenge than success.
2:29 damn that was a nice spin/fake. this was one heck of a game by gary payton.
I. outplayed everyone on the opposing team without question
II. defended and frustrated the opposing team's star very well
III: hit the 3 and grabbed the rebound+made the assist to hawkins to seal the game.
Tell 'em G. You speak the truth. The world needs more people like you to stick it up to The Man.
PAYTON AND KEMP WERE BEASTY 2GETHER THAT YEAR... THE G L O V E
Amazing how you don't see a single FLOP even with that hard nose, physical, in your face kind of defense being played. NBA today is a fucking Joke.
Guess you never watched Utah play...? U would see Karl Malone do it all game back then
thisisdjrunna Bullshit, NBA today is a joke with all the fucking flopping. It's not even worth comparing the two eras.
+Kanguesso Kang how old are u again? I watched Karl Malone flop his whole career!! People don't have to play like old days. Skill sets change. Just like in football were not discrediting Tim Brady/Payton manning right now becuz of the rule changes are we?
thisisdjrunna LMFAO, you watched Malone flop his whole career? Now EVERYONE flops after every single fucking play. And do you see a single fucking flop on this video or do you just want to argue like the LOSER you are? LMAO
guys still flop during these years, not as rampant though, payton is hard nosed defender, he doesnt need to flop. karl malone though flops, he had wrestling matches with rodman in wcw and decided to use it in basketball.
Jordan and Payton both love chewing gum.
Emmanuel Stalling ROFFFL!! Word
both love trash talking too
They're both bald too
Wow! 26 points is consider bad for jordan ahhha...
It wasn't his points it was more of his field goal percentage dropped. I think he shot 40% from the field when guarded by Gary and a great deal of his pts came from the free throw line i think.
***** I'll still take the 26 points...no matter how he got them...40% FG% is still REALLY good...definitely lower than hi 50% FG% average though
Franco Fernando
40% is actually below average.
Franco Fernando If you shoot 40% with 26 points thats alot of missed shots. Which is alot of defensive rebounds that can be turned into points for the other team.
+The Dream Merchant That first guy was wrong Jordan shot 11 for 22 this game www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/199606140SEA.html
Still watching in 2019. Payton > Jordan in game 4 & 5. Impressive.
23 and 26.
Hahaha! Bob Costas REALLY talked Jordan up pre-game. He FULL EXPECTED Jordan to score 60 points this game and win the series. Instead, the Bulls got their asses handed to them.
This was when defense was still allowed in the NBA.
Michael Jordan will still be the best defensive player in nba history for me..
If Payton was guarding Jordan the entire finals there is no doubt in my mind that the Sonics would've won the finals.
With Payton guarding Jordan the Sonics were 2-1 in the finals. Payton is regarded as the best Jordan defender ever.
i agree. also sucks that Payton got injured, or else they would've won in my opinion.
Jordan still had 26 pts and we say he had a bad game. Payton has 23 points and we say he had a great game. Jordan is the G.O.A.T ALL TIME
Daniel Parker
look up his shooting % that game.
the bulls won in 6 correct . Jordan was the MVP
This was MJ's worse finals appearance. Gary Payton really got into his head with his trash talking and great defense. NBA players today would cry like a baby if this were done to them lol
Ty Wright Um no
Nooo... take this L
97 against miami game 4
Gary Payton and his team lost to a team whose city is on Lake Michigan. 8 years later, his team would again lose in the Finals to a team who plays in a state by the same name. 😆
So you think Payton is going to lockdown much bigger LeBron and Durant. Common man, stop disrespecting modern players. LeBron and Durant showed multiple times that they can go through physicality. LeBron and Durant is probably more physically advantageous than 90% of the 90s player why they will not survive?
Jordan had 26 pts on 11 for 22 shooting. 4 rebounds 1 assist. Pippen went 5 for 20 in that game. 14pts 8 reb 5 asst
이때가 진짜 농구지-Those were the days when I could see real basketball.
these were the times 90s nba
i wish i was old enough to watch this.... :(
I love it how someone can be so great that him scoring "only" 26 points in a game is considered a bad game from his part or great defence from the defender. Don't get me wrong, Gary Payton was one of the greatest perimeter defenders and trashtalkers the game has ever seen. It just shows how great of a player Michael Jordan really was. Gary did do an awesome job on him nevertheless. Thanks for the video.
fg%
give me 50 attempts and i couldve scored 20+ .
defense so tight its like a glove
5:20 that closeup though
look up some kemp games dude...he's my fav player ever and im from RI...but seriously he used to avg 18-20 and 10 boards..youre missing out if you don't look for some more highlights of him
wow underrated players everywhere. I guess MJ. sometimes did get overreated. But Gary Payton should have guarded him whole series
No debate, he did as good a job as anyone could. I can't name 2 guys at the guard position better defenders than Payton.
Prime Jordan yeah, I can't find anyone else.
Though I loved Mugsy picking up people full court
1996 Chicago won the series 4 games to 2, a fitting conclusion after a record breaking 72W-10L standing during the regular season. Michael Jordan was named Finals MVP. plus he average 25 pt in the finals this was game 5, 3-1 bulls, sonic's won game 5 for 3-2, MJ had 26 pts and GP had 23pts games in game 5..... game 6 bulls win 4-2 MJ champ
defense is not just statistical (steals, blocks). its how well they can contain the person theyre guarding
payton was putting jordan at that work
What made Jordan the greatest was his ability to bounce back from games like this even harder
Payton was an awesome defender. But you can't stop Jordan. You can only hope to contain him.
Gotta miss those days.
Jordan had to help out on defense Guard Payton Deadleft and help out on Shawn Kemp Pipp had a bad back so Jordan had to use more energy Kemp was a beast under the rim
@halfpup
Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was the defensive coordinator for both the 90s knicks and the '08 Celtics and when asked which 1 was defensively better, here's what he said:
"Right now I'd say the [New York] teams were [better] and much [more physical] because at that time, you were [allowed to play] much more [physical], and we had [greater] size."
-- Tom Thibodeau: "Tom Thibodeau Q & A", by Kevin Pelton; basketballpspectus . com, Mar 25, 2008
Those 90s Heat teams were also BETTER too!
What a performance. You gotta wonder, would the Sonics win if Payton played the first 3 games? I wonder...
yes.
I don't disrespect Payton, he's one of my favourite players ever, his defense was really amazing, I just said that MJ misses a lot of easy shots
damn gp had so much swag tho
he got one on his way out in miami...
If Payton had guarded Jordan the whole series it could have been a different outcome
Gary was good...played hard...defended MJ well...never stopped him...he was as all the defenders who said " coach, I can stop him lemme at him"...Only guy who did a great job on MJ was Dumars, Dennis and BL...STARKS, HARDAWAY, PAYTON, STRICKLAND CHANEY, THUNDER DAN, ETC...THEY ALL COULD NOT DENY HIM
this man showed jordan scorin one bucket, one....
The guy who played Jordan the toughest was Sidney Moncrief of the Milwaukee Bucks. Jordan later said the Moncrief played the toughest D on him of anyone. Also said he made him work hard on D too cuz Moncrief was also a scorer.
If the Pippen-Kemp trade went through,MJ would be ringless.
You look homeless
I doubt that, MJ with Grant/Rodman and Kemp on the frontline? Would've been insane!
jan279 But they would never win a ring. Pippen is necessary.Plus Grant would be traded since he wouldn't want to be a bench player
BushMaster Savimbi If Payton and Kemp can make it out of a tough Western Conference, what more with Michael FREAKIN' Jordan and Kemp in the weaker Eastern Conference? Also, Phil would be stupid to not start Kemp and Grant even if none of them are natural centers.
jan279 Payton and Pippen on the same team?? THE BEST DEFENSE EVER. These two would MURDER Jordan and Kemp.
Shawn Kemp king of brutality dunk.
