Gary Payton Guards Michael Jordan (26pts) ('96 Finals, Game 5)

  • Gary Payton and the Seattle Supersonics turn the series back to Chicago as they win game 5. Payton scores 23 points (some of them ON Michael Jordan in a beautiful fashion), grabs 9 rebounds and hands out 6 assists. There aren't as many defensive highlights, since Jordan was double-teamed a lot, which made him try including his team-mates who unfortunately had an off-day. June 14, 1996.

    Spin it all you want, he got locked up by Payton. Amazing how his numbers went all the way back up against Utah in '97 (32.3/7/6 on 45.6% FG), including scoring 38 with whatever the hell he had in Gm 5. Those are excuses. And he didn't score 26 ppg against Payton...he didn't PLAY against Payton until Gm 4 (which is George Karl's biggest coaching mistake). When he did, he scored 23 (on 6 of 19 shooting), 26 (on 11 of 22 shooting), and 22 (on 5 of 19 shooting). So in actuality, he averaged 23.7 ppg on 22 of 60 shooting (36.67% FG) while averaging 20 shots per game when defended by Payton. In the first three games, he scored 31 ppg on 29 of 63 shooting (46.0% FG) while averaging 21 shots. In other words, he was MJ. Then Karl FINALLY puts Payton on MJ and the numbers fall dramatically.

      True man.... George Karl really did make a bad decision not using Gary on him sooner... If that adjustment was made sooner this series would a been and absolute dog fight until the end...

    Gary Payton was the best Jordan defender and slowed him down in the finals. However Jordan was missing wide open shots that defenders never give Jordan because he usually drains those shots. Beautiful series. The Sonics were so tough that I have little doubt they'd run the Wade-James Miami Heat out of the building. This series was never a Payton vs Jordan matchup, because Payton was only on Michael single-coverage maybe 5 times the entire series lol. It was Payton and another defender (sometimes two, for the triple-team) that held Michael's numbers down somewhat. Their defensive rotations were executed brilliantly, and yet Jordan still got loose and found his teammates.

    • @royceg3375
      @royceg3375 9 років тому +6

      Whatchu talking about... I watched this series recently. Payton was hounding Jordan everywhere he went. He was doubled team often yes. But GP was man to man with Jordan many different times. And really gave Jordan a hard time.

    • @funkyflights
      @funkyflights 9 років тому +1

      RRoyce G .... Yep he did ... You can't stop Jordan, But Gary certainly slowed him down more than any player I've ever watched D him.... It's just a dam shame Karl waited so long to allow that match-up.... Not sure why you don't lock your best defender on Mike the entire series...

      In many cases it's the coaches issue of budgeting and balancing energy. Anybody who has to defend the athleticism and mobility of Jordan or the speed and cleverness of Payton will have to spend a hell of a lot of energy. That's fine for a defensive specialist but Payton was a valuable scoring option too.

    • @funkyflights
      @funkyflights 9 років тому +2

      crawlFace ... Payton was a ball of energy at this time... The guy could run a marathon and still ball ... You just gotta lock your best defensive player on Mike ...YOU just gotta... Payton would a made Mike's life difficult that entire series... You can't stop Mike but Payton certainly was frustrating him and doing something we've never seen... denying him the ball and making him work like hell to get it...

    Lamar is simply showing us one of the greatest attempts to guard MJ that we have ever seen on the biggest stage, and I believe he did a pretty good job. My one point would be that, if any player besides Payton was guarding MJ the help defense wouldn't matter because he'd be able to get around anyone else, like Schrempf in the first game, so easily and pick the defense apart that way. Payton didn't allow him that first step.
    And good point on Alvin and Sidney, great defenders I agree.

    I went to that game. Gary looks great in these highlights, but Kemp was elevating 2 feet above others, and dropping J's in a World Jordon couldn't imagine. That was the Sonic's at their highest. Game 5, 1996

Don't get me wrong, Gary Payton was one of the greatest perimeter defenders and trashtalkers the game has ever seen. It just shows how great of a player Michael Jordan really was. What made Jordan the greatest was his ability to bounce back from games like this even harder

    Payton was an awesome defender. But you can't stop Jordan. You can only hope to contain him.

    Jordan had to help out on defense Guard Payton Deadleft and help out on Shawn Kemp Pipp had a bad back so Jordan had to use more energy Kemp was a beast under the rim

    Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was the defensive coordinator for both the 90s knicks and the '08 Celtics and when asked which 1 was defensively better, here's what he said:
    "Right now I'd say the [New York] teams were [better] and much [more physical] because at that time, you were [allowed to play] much more [physical], and we had [greater] size."

    Those 90s Heat teams were also BETTER too!

    What a performance. You gotta wonder, would the Sonics win if Payton played the first 3 games? I wonder...

    I don't disrespect Payton, he's one of my favourite players ever, his defense was really amazing, I just said that MJ misses a lot of easy shots

    Gary was good...played hard...defended MJ well...never stopped him...he was as all the defenders who said " coach, I can stop him lemme at him"...Only guy who did a great job on MJ was Dumars, Dennis and BL...STARKS, HARDAWAY, PAYTON, STRICKLAND CHANEY, THUNDER DAN, ETC...THEY ALL COULD NOT DENY HIM

    The guy who played Jordan the toughest was Sidney Moncrief of the Milwaukee Bucks. Jordan later said the Moncrief played the toughest D on him of anyone. Also said he made him work hard on D too cuz Moncrief was also a scorer.

      jan279 But they would never win a ring. Pippen is necessary.Plus Grant would be traded since he wouldn't want to be a bench player

      BushMaster Savimbi If Payton and Kemp can make it out of a tough Western Conference, what more with Michael FREAKIN' Jordan and Kemp in the weaker Eastern Conference? Also, Phil would be stupid to not start Kemp and Grant even if none of them are natural centers.

      jan279 Payton and Pippen on the same team?? THE BEST DEFENSE EVER. These two would MURDER Jordan and Kemp.
