From Philippines here ..in the 90's only the finals we could see..we didn't have the chance to see these great battles in the playoffs..thanks to UA-cam now..
This was a very good playoff series during the Western Conference Championship Finals between the Utah Jazz of Karl Malone & John Stockton against the Seattle Supersonics in Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton back in the year of 1996. Two of the best basketball teams during that old generation.
NOPE MNY TIMES THEY BEEN USED WITH MODERN ERA TEAMS USUALLY RETRO NEW YEAR OR OTHER HOLLIDAY MATCHUPS IN CLASSIC UNIFORMS. I REMEMBER DERON WILLIAMS USED TO WEAR ONCE.
The western conference finals during the 90s were insanely good! Sonics vs Suns, Sonics vs Jazz, Rockets vs Suns, and Rockets vs Spurs were some best basketballs ever played.
Kemp was 26 and Payton was 27 at this time, both in their prime. Kemp and Payton were among the best NBA duos in the 90's. Them two and Shaq and Penny were probably the most explosive and exciting 90's duos to watch.
Intense battle between the GOAT pound for pound John Stockton vs. Gary Payton. Those 2 went 100% head-to-head the entire series, all 7 games. In Game 7 John Stockton was unstoppable. Normally you don't see 2 superstars actually guard each other the entire game head-to-head. Usually you have others guard the superstar to keep each of them out of foul trouble. Classic series. One of the best in basketball history.
What an incredible point guard battle between two all-time greats in Stockton and Payton! Both played absolutely phenomenal. Stock was killing Payton early, before GP got his own back. Amazing
@@hectorlopez1069 They didn't really. Best opposition Chicago ever faced, they just had some bad matchups and Chicago was deeper (small market versus big market). Brian Williams deciding to play for Chicago rather than for Utah meant a lot for the '97 matchup. Also take into account that some bad officiating happened. Add that Jordan was just too good in the clutch and as a scorer in general.
He sometimes changed pivot foot while standing still. Yeah, travelling but he knew they wouldn't call it. Nothing compared to what happens nowdays though.
Shortly after, an endless parade of horrible front office decisions began, resulting in the city of Seattle losing their beloved basketball team a dozen years later
I grew up a BIG Sonics fan. Even though I'm from Miami, Florida, for some reason they replayed their games here on a local network channel. 🤷♂️ Anyway, the Jazz were a pesky annoyance. All Sonics fans loathed Utah. Many great battles. Part of the reason to me, Stockton is the greatest to ever do it at the PG position.
1996 WCF g7 (this game): Karl Malone missed two (2) critical FTs (that would narrow the gap to one). 1997 NBA Finals (g1): likewise (led to tie-breaking and game-winning GOAT shot) In an "Open Court" episode, Charles Barkley once asked Malone what he was saying before making a FT. Barkley either didn't reveal or didn't know the answer because it is personal for "the Mailman."
You know folks, I love the cast and crew (roster players of these 2 teams with great superstars of Malone, Kemp, Stockton and Payton...) and the rest of the best of the 90s NBA basketball 🏀. U can't compare these NBA eras style of basketball to current NBA now with full of shit 3 pointers. But sadly, these two great teams of Utah Jazz and Sonics are both losers to my great Chicago Bulls of His Airness, Michael Jordan, and its formidable line-up and great coach Phil Jackson. But 1 thing is, Utah Jazz keeps on coming back! Lastly, remember, this 96-season is the start of the 2nd 3peat championship of the Bulls.
I just remember how the refs called kemp for fouls against the bulls. Everything was a foul for kemp always in foul trouble while Rodman well you know... no wonder why the bulls got a 3-0 lead. MJ was too valuable of a brand
probably because they were better. They were by no means an EASIER matchup considering how good their defense was and the fact the Bulls would go on to beat the Jazz two times with weaker lineups.

Utah made the finals the next two years, and Seattle never returned.
The final time Utah wore those classic purple and yellow uniforms

They actually wore them in the next preseason still
Then, they began to wore the black and purple uniforms.

The Rockets and Suns never played each other in the wcf it was the semi-finals.
Those were the days
The narratives at the start is such a good way to start off an NBA playoff game! It makes us fans more excited and anticipating for upcoming games.

i used to have this game recorded on VHS and i probably watched it 15-20 times!
Marvelous NBA time …
Brings back sad memories. But Sonics were classy and good.
Kemp man...What a beast.
Payton is in the hall of fame and kemp is not, that hurts.
@@hectorlopez1069 Jeesh, what the…. I wasn’t even aware. Thats messed up.
This is a very nice match-up of the two of the greatest PGs and PFs!
Stockton and Malone only made the finals after Shawn Kemp left Seattle. Kemp deserves to be in the hall of fame with GP, stockton and malone
Wrong Shawn Kemp was on Seattle in 1997. They lost to Houston in the semi-finals
Kemp and the Sonics choked against the Rockets in 97
Karl Malone was one game away from losing three NBA finals 😂😂

It was a different game, certainly more physical like a street fight that had a ball in it somewhere.
The foul at 4:02 is hilarious given all the hooking, scratching and everything else stock got away with for two decades

Shawn Kemp won his matchup against Karl Malone, and John Stockton won his matchup against Gary Payton.
Stockton usually did. @10:00 typical Stockton shenanigans. His hands were so quick. Hated his sneaky ass around the rim 😂
Payton easily outplayed Stockton in this series though, in my opinion, GP was the best player in this western playoffs.

Did Seattle win bc they were better or bc the league decided they were an easier match for the bulls in Jordan's very valuable quest for mythology?
probably because they were better. They were by no means an EASIER matchup considering how good their defense was and the fact the Bulls would go on to beat the Jazz two times with weaker lineups.
