We will never get those days back again. i well remember sittintg in front of the telly with my family, watching shows like this, and 3.2.1 [with Ted Rodgers], The Golden Shot {with Bob Monkhouse}, The Generation Game [with Bruce Forsyth, and then Larry Grayson], New Faces [which was the Britain's Got Talent of the day - along with Opportunity Knocks]. Then we would watch Saturday Night at the London Palladium], and many more. Those days are gone now...forever. In reference to Nicholas Parsons [ who has sadly died now], he starred in an episode of Dr Who, alongside Sylvester McCoy.
The pace of that show by today's standards is mind blowing. Today ee would have 6 recaps, lots of pauses for suspense and a couple of long goodbyes to make the show into an hour long snoozefest.
The only place you could buy anything apart from at the corner shop or down the pub on a Sunday back in 1983 was to be a contestant in the Sale of The Century studio in Norwich.
Nicholas Parsons once trod rather hard on my foot while taking his seat near mine in a theatre in London. He was very tall. Just thought I'd share that little anecdote rather than.saving It for my autobiography.
Good proper t.v. short ad breaks as well, so remember the ready brek one! Those transit vans were so good! Worth a fortune now. Loved the show. R.I.P. Mr parsons.
Fab adverts, no stupid mixed race, mixed gender, mixed sexuality, mixed ability/disability actors that this generation say we must see BEFORE we get to the product itself. Where were the families who had one of everything like they do today? NP, you were from a better time and place.
I remember seeing the series here as of course it was shown on the ITV network I think on a Friday night at 7.00pm if I remember rightly so too. I live in the London area so it was just after Thames then became LWT at the time. The famous Anglia knight ident so then too. Also, if this was 1983, I think alas that this was the last series of it that they did then, it having started in 1971 so I read before so too. I guess that they decided to end it there so then too. Thank you!
For a couple of years, they tried using the format that had already been popular in Australia for some time. There was one contestant on that version who may be somewhat known these days, going by the name of Simon Cowell. I wonder what became of him?...... ;)
Sale of the Century aired as a daytime game show here on NBC from 1969 to 1973, used to air mid mornings. It seems the British version was a prime time show.
It was, partly due to the BBC on strike, as Commercial TV the only channel on air at the time, but it was the most watched show for one week in August 1978, about 22 million, 33% of the national population. I worked close to the studios, the cars came from the local Mann Edgerton Car dealership next door to Norwich Railway Station where I worked. Great days. Sadly just a local news studio to the ITV Network now.
oh Nicholas is so polite in this and everyone wore their Sunday best in the audience Yvonne's new Talbot Samba would have fizzled away by the time she drove it back to Lincoln :)
Talbot Samba..I was trying to remember ..the prizes were aweful..My dad use to say "how much ? are you jokin for that piece of junk" all the time..he was right the prizes were trash and the question too hard but still we watched..good times!
@@thesuncollective1475 Hi n good times they surely were and a Fab time to grow up then and luvly memories of my parents too.Your right about the questions been to hard but as u say we watched, in our house Saturday tea was a fry up including Black Pudding and Fried bread. This was after World of sport, think sale of century went out around 7pm .Very sad to hear Nicholas as passed away today..Did u like The Generation game at the time plus Mike Yarwood ..Kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝
The late Michael Balfour played the tramp in the Outspan advert - he was ubiquitous in 1950s British films. You often see him these days on Talking Pictures (Freeview 81)
Thank you for that video. When I was growing up in the seventies and eighties, I really did not understand this TV programme, and thought it was trash. Now I'm older, and enjoy listening to @Just a minute@, I went back to look for NP.... Bloody hell! What a pro! He should be in charge of the Brexit negotiations....
Jennifer Mullin might wanna consider reviving "Sale Of The Century" not only for the United States, but the United Kingdom and the country where it originated, Australia.
I wonder who holds the record for highest score in a single episode of British Sale of the Century. And I see they still had the rule where any contestant whose score was reduced to zero was out of the game. By this time, the Australian and American versions eliminated that rule (that is, contestants whose score was reduced to zero could still play).
@@thesuncollective1475 It was the rules of the then IBA (OFCOM) which limited the value of prizes per show, I think it was £3000, plus everything was more expensive in comparison to now.
I'm surprised, I'd of thought the star prize would have been a Mini Metro, on Bullseye it always seemed to be a Vauxhall Nova, that's when it wasn't a caravan or speed boat....
‘Sale of the Half Century’. My god I forgot how cruddy many of the prizes were. Looked as if companies were giving away stuff they couldn’t sell to the producers.
Had IBA established a more reasonable price limit (maybe around £10-15k instead of just around £6k) before 1993, they could've had better bargains & prices.

Love the syn drums in the theme tune, very trendy at the time.

Yes and those are the reasons I avoid modern day tv quizzes along with endless cookery shows with non-entity cooks and other mind numbing trivia.
it's this exact reason why I'm hoping that the proposed pilot for uk jeopardy bears fruit, that game is nothing but great, solid quizzing
@@MattTheSpratt are they bringing jeopardy back again?

Love the way they always displayed the car with the hazard lights on, as if it'd broken down. Which cars did, a lot, back then...
The car most probs in the shape of a coke can or dustbin now
lol
R.I.P. Nicholas. Truely a gentlemans gentleman.
For ever in my childhood. Forever in my thoughts 💭 REST WELL . Sir 💔👌🏽
RIP Nicholas Parsons, I wasn't keen on Sale of the Century growing up, but you were still a part of my life.
This may look outdated now but remember back in 1983 it looked outdated too.
Nicholas Parsons once trod rather hard on my foot while taking his seat near mine in a theatre in London. He was very tall. Just thought I'd share that little anecdote rather than.saving It for my autobiography.
Best thing to come out of Anglia TV since Survival!
don't forget knightmare!!!!
Sale of The Century was the best thing to come out of Anglia TV full stop.

They should bring this quiz back
susiehoult51 agreed. This was my favourite quiz.

That wasn't Anglia TV though.
Kevin Ashman from the Eggheads was also a contestant on the show.
@crazyclive
Not on ITV. The Challenge TV version with Keith Chegwin was very cheap.
R. I. P Mr Parsons! I always listen to your shows on BBC Radio. 📻📻👂👼👼😢
I'm from Norwich yay 🎊
RIP Nicholas Parsonss to a great iconic legend a fantastic man another part of my child hood gone
RIP, warm hearted Nicholas Parsons.
Happy memories watching this with the whole family
This has to be one of the best theme tunes ever.
And now from Norwich...it's the quiz of the week...
Stewart white is still presenting on 'look east'....live from Norwich
Loved the adverts.
yeh i just brought myself a ford transit
Peter Fenn on the organ. Nicholas Parsons eloquent but a bit feisty.
Just PERFECT.
Who'd have thought that three and a half decades later, Nicholas Parsons would not only still be with us, but still broadcasting?
Martyn Mellodew "Welcome to Just a Minute!"
and stewart white is too
Errr...
Sadly it came to an end today...
Absolute TV gold, I wish they could do that today
Yvonne's second-half performance is like a wild untamed quiz animal. Amazing.
God Bless you Nicholas....rest in peace.
It's Nicholas Bloody Parsons! Mr Jolly Lives Next Door was his finest hour.
Indeed one of the Comedies Of The Century
Wow a Talbot samba does it come with AA cover and a ten gallons of rust prevention treatment, 😂😂😂
Comes standard with a steering wheel and handbrake...!
Passed away today . A great entertainer
Stewart White as always fantastic!
I used to watch this on a Saturday night
Another Legend sadly leaves us. RIP Nicholas Parsons 10 October 1923 - 28 January 2020.
How did he die I am a huge fan great host
Gone too soon
RIP you will be missed
Yvonne is on FIRE
Nicholas Parsons - RIP, great entertainer. Another great gone.
I always wondered why the Anglia Knight endcap has no year credited for the series?
Gareth Stephen Lankshear grampian was a late starter in giving us dates too
Anglia was one of the last to drop “colour” from their slides
I think granada dropped the word.colour production on their end caps in 85
Nice to see the actual program. I was already familiar with Parsons from The Benny Hill Show and Benny's parodies of this program.
Oh yes Nicola Parsons and Nicholas Parcels.
@@securityrobot knickerless parson

That Brian looks real serious..and where did they get those prizes from..crikey...a Talbot Samba star prize please..Thanks for posting it was a gas.
ITV imposed a price cap for prizes, so the prizes were always going to be slightly rubbish.
Anglia still never had a copyright caption showing the year
Congratulations to Yvonne for winning the car. I was waiting for her to be denied it.
2:00 - wait, someone is charging *MONEY* for that???
Nice ad break.
Loved it too brought back memories
Best part
I've got 100 channels on my TV but there's me watching telly on UA-cam from years ago..
The actor having his slice of orange snatched at the end is Michael Cronin aka Mr Baxter
Well spotted. Would not have recognised him without the beard.

Ironically Stuart White left Nottingham for Norwich that same year, and has been senior anchor of BBC Look East every since.

I am a Norwich man, born and bred. And I just can't believe the prizes were so so shit!! 😁
Especially that cat sculpture 😄😄

Which Sale of the Century version came first, the U.S. or British?
US, in 1969.

Daylight robbery taking £6 off Gloria for saying John Philip Sousa specialised in brass band music! Of course he did!
I don't remember Sale of the Century being on a Sunday.

get Yvonne on the chase!!!!
Well never get those prices back! A Vauxhall Chevette for £150!
Who is the announcer
John Benson who was also an announcer on another Anglia game show Gambit & the last 2 series of 3-2-1.
Macaroni - Durham Wheat, is it not?! Parsons clearly doesn't know much about cooking!!!
Why was everything so ludicrously expensive in 1983
Because China hadn’t yet started making everything.
The show was a bit of a joke to be honest but we only had 3 channels back then
If I was there I would’ve pick 2 hot sexy birds instead crappy car and severely disable bike.
