Going down this rabbit hole risks getting the master and servant relationship upside down. Voters are not the servants of the political parties, it's the other way around, and if a political party comes to think it isn't they deserve everything coming to them.
He's as mad as a fish. The list of problems only picked Brexit up collaterally, Boris destroyed his way to the top in a series of political assassinations straight out of Jeffrey Archer, leaving the Tories without experience, let alone competence.
“The promise of Brexit to be delivered…”. But there’s your problem Andrew, what EXACTLY was “the promise..”? There were many factions and as many variations on that theme, so once they had “won” they didn’t know what to do. So they fought among themselves trying to define it for 3 years (instead of agreeing it in advance). Then Johnson (or rather, Cummings with Johnson as front man) came up with “Get Brexit Done!” - not a policy, not even a strategy, just a slogan - “we still don’t know what it is, but let’s get it over with for God’s sake”. And the only way they could “get it done” was to satisfy the hardest of the hard and either fire, ignore, or exhaust everyone else. And then they began to have to deal with the consequences of doing that, all of which had been dismissed or simply ignored in the panic to “Get Brexit Done”. And it was more difficult than they thought - and “the promise of Brexit” turned out to be a fantasy.
Looking back to 2016 one is reminded that while the Tories had a pro-EU leader [Cameron] and a party that was deeply divided on continued membership, the Labour Party had a party largely supportive of the EU, but a leader [Corbyn] who was at best lukewarm about it. Labour clearly now wishes for a closer liaison with the EU but, with regret, I fear that rejoining is not an option. Even if we managed to convince Brussels that we wished to rejoin, how could they trust us not to repeat the whole in-out argument all over again?
Tories ‘never really recovered from Brexit’ and left them ‘divided’. Yawn, no matter how often I point out that Labour were equally divided, as witnessed by red wall, this narrative persists.

I think you have to go further back than Johnson when considering how Brexit broke the Conservative Party. Brexit has always been contentious to any political party including ones within Europe. However, in the UK membership of the EU has been particularly difficult for both left and right-leaning politics. EU membership brought down Thatcher and nearly ended John Major's career. David Cameron was determined to not allow the same thing to happen to him so he held out the possibility of Brexit to the fractious right wing of his party by offering a wrongly titled referendum. In actual fact, it was a plebiscite but for reasons dating back to the 1930s and a conservative party policy of appeasement, he didn't want to use the plebiscite word. I believe David Cameron felt that forcing a plebiscite would bring the moderates of his party together and defeat his own right-wing (the so-called ERG) whilst throwing Labour into turmoil by off-siding them and splitting the Labour party. Unfortunately, he played the voting game by the rules laid down by Ted Heath and Wilson in the previous EU vote. Those rules of truthfulness, good debate and fundamental honesty were the complete opposite of the vengeful and hate-filled campaign by the ERG and their associates who won the day. However, the damage to British public life caused by the fight has never been resolved and there followed a long and sorry history of poor decision-making and even worse Prime Ministers. Has Brexit been done? No, it has not but perhaps the British public has been. We are now witnessing the result.

Johnson gained an eighty-seat majority off the back of 'getting Brexit done'. The Brexit vote didn't destroy the Conservative Party; what destroyed the Conservative Party was a reluctance to implement conservative policies and a suicidal proclivity to pander to the Left. Why vote Conservative when all that party stands for is a slightly different species of socialism to Labour?
Anti European Tories been splitting the Tories since John Major.
@@royw-g3120 And the Brexit referendum was an opportunity to move on, with the debate having been settled by the British people. The reason the Conservative Party is in such a mess now is that too many MPs seem to have forgotten what conservative policies look like - or else, they were never conservatives to begin with.
The conservatives failing to deliver brexit to its full and democratically envisaged potential has ended the Conservative party
Brexit will never work because isolationism in today's interconnected world is outdated. You cannot go back to the empire days. It died a long time ago. Nostalgia cannot pay your bills. The Brexiters got rid of EU immigrants and they replaced them with worse and more immigrants from Africa and India etc. When the Europeans came to work they did not necessarily stay in the UK for good. They either changed EU member states or went back to their country of origin. Whereas the rest of the world people once they enter the UK they will never go back. We too enjoyed freedom of movement in the EU. It was mutual benefits between us and EU member states. Countless businesses moved to the EU to be able to trade inside the single market and the local Brits lost their jobs and got replaced by EU workers in the EU. Exporters cannot trade because of tariffs, red tapes and higher costs. The Brexiters never knew what they were doing. They gambled with the economy, immigration system etc then a disaster strikes. It was a waste of trillions of pounds, time and energy for a big loss in return.

Putting aside what Brexit has done to the country and focusing on what it has done to the Tories is the essential mistake that has brought us here in the first place. What was largely an intra-Tory squabble, it was something they couldn't deal with internally amongst themselves. They decided to make this the rest of the country's problem. If it breaks them, permanently, by only regret is that it happened nearly a decade too late after they had grievously wounded us all for the sake of a failed attempt to preserve their party.
Exactly. Bill Cash and Redwood are good examples of what Major called ba…..ds, and all the rest who jumped on the Brexit bandwagon for personal gain, in total disregard of the National Interest.

Most remoaners fail to grasp this, no helping them.
If brexit is to blame then why is David Cameron still in th cabinet? It was him being so desperate to hang on to power he gave us a vote on the EU, convinced he would easily win. When we voted to leave he stood there and said he wasn't the man to take us forward.

The Tories will pay until they see the light and change tack.
It was always clear that Brexit would never work if America and Europe wouldn't go along with a complete free market model. Singapore model
Corruption did, not Brexit
Good.
Did the same to the country. A gaping national wound that will take generations to heal.
You mean the collective political class decided to ignore the referendum result?
Looking back to 2016 one is reminded that while the Tories had a pro-EU leader [Cameron] and a party that was deeply divided on continued membership, the Labour Party had a party largely supportive of the EU, but a leader [Corbyn] who was at best lukewarm about it. Labour clearly now wishes for a closer liaison with the EU but, with regret, I fear that rejoining is not an option. Even if we managed to convince Brussels that we wished to rejoin, how could they trust us not to repeat the whole in-out argument all over again?
And now betting on their own demise.

They’ve gone from ‘*taking back control*’ of our borders, to just ‘*taking back control*’ of our Party! 😆
