This may go down as one of the greatest fighting withdrawals in history.
Perhaps it is worth looking at Bakhmut now and asking what was the significant changes to Ukraines position before and after the loss of the city. It seems that Russia has not taken advantages from this success and othrt cities should be viewed in a similar way, try and save lives , equipment and ammunition for a more maneuver based war.
Putin is in a very weak position. There is unrest growing in ruzzia as the economy crumbles along with their demographics. Their energy sector (main source of income) is becoming less profitable and their liquid assets are depleted. Even the high payments to recruit are not enough tho entice people into the army and they are running out of personnel.
Ukraine holds on to Kursk and that is a huge pressure point for civilians who have been displaced on top of that ruzzians have lost many military personnel there.

Toretsk, an important Ukrainian mining city has just fallen to the Russians, Pokrovsk will follow as its already getting flanked into a cauldron and encircled like other settlements that have already fallen to the Russians.
Fell after how many years? After how many Russian military casualties? After how many educated Russian civilians fled?

Torretsk fell yesterday, much of Chasiv Yar taken, when Pokrovsk falls, you will say it was a strategically irrelevant city and you will harp on about Russian casualties because that is your only solace after defeat. But after these fall, the Russians will reach the Dnieper. They might as well go for Odessa.
Its not surprising Russia's advance slowed in the winter months, December / January. Spring / Summer very likely there advance will pick up again, sadly for Ukraine.
