I can understand why you feel like everyone and their dog is reacting to Tool...but that's simply because it's true...but there is a reason for it. Tool sets many precedents and benchmarks. They are worth the analysis. I hope you don't stop listening to Tool songs you haven't heard yet....We are here for you and your experience and thoughts. And there is much more to hear my friend. Don't let the seemingly over-saturated community dictate your song choice, listen to what moves you, and Tool most certainly seems to do that for you. Much love to you my friend. At the very least, New Tool album drops in 2019!!

And on that note you come at your tool listens from a very different angle. You're not new to the genre, and you analyse the songs as a listener and a fan, rather than an "expert". Keep it up, every time I see a tool video of yours I end up listening to that album for a week. Oh, I'll chuck a song recommendation in here too; I not long ago stumbled across a band called Traverser. I'd say checkout the song Redshift, but honestly both albums are really strong. Definitely a prog influence but with some really nice hooks and really talented musicians.

I was about to write something supportive, but Bricktowne said it better than I would have. I echo those sentiments. We can all listen and discuss Tool songs on our own, but we come here to share this with YOU. Sharing in your experiences deepen our appreciation, for what that's worth. Thank you for all you do.

We know the difference between someone who is genuinely reacting to, and appreciating the music, and those who have jumped on the bandwagon. I've peeked at a couple, and I'll never go back to watch more. So you'd better not stop. Especially since you haven't reacted to Right In Two!

Jim, I sincerely understand your consternation about doing TOOL reacts videos on a platform "awash" with like content. As a TOOL fanatic of 25 + YEARS - I truly look forward to your reaction/reviews of TOOL's music....primarily because it is clearly obvious that you understand musical theory and have a musicians ear. I don't know why the vicarious validation of one's own musical passion is so appealing, but please don't stop. I love how much you space them out. It feels like an actual treat when you release a new TOOL vid. I watch all your other stuff as well, but as an OLD SCHOOL TOOL HEAD, love yr TOOL reacts. The others are garbage

I think the reason why tool is becoming so popular in the reaction videos area, is because the band has quite a unique sound, but more importantly the band has sort of a Cult Following, and the fans ( like me ) really like seeing other people discover tool, and actively search for people reacting to tool and watch a lot of those videos :D

It's because you reacted to a video on tool, that a lot of us came to subscribe to you from, and the UA-cam algorithm works in both directions. Because so much of your traffic came via tool reactions, you are seeing it through your feed. I subscribe to many tool reactors, and always have to look, never get it recommended.

  • @KdogTN
    @KdogTN 5 років тому

People do reactions to TOOL mostly due to their popularity. Tool fans are rabid by nature and will follow a channel simply because of the videos. There is a reason behind this. Being a TOOL fan since the late 80’s, I’ve grown through their music. I stood in line at midnight in the freezing cold snow to buy Lateralus. We take great pleasure it watching someone experience them for the first time. It brings us back to when we first experienced a song. Tool was always downplayed by the radio industry because of their long songs. They never broke from the format of a song being a movement and not a 3 minute promo. They have a new album coming out soon. I plan on being that old fart in line at midnight waiting for the drop. Keep enjoying their music my friend. No matter how many times you listen to it, you always pick up on something new.

The masses have spoken. Even myself who caught them supporting RATM in 93 then back again in 94 in Newcastle, they were one of a number of bands i was into. Roll forward and I enjoyed more than ever rediscovering TOOL through reaction videos. You and a handful of others give a good take. Other channels are doing a lot of everything. Do your own thing and thats being you. Tool videos are popular for many reason, lets just all celebrate a once in a life time band. 4 members all master at their craft.

Nothing wrong with taking a deep dive into Tool if you enjoy them. As long as your reactions are genuine. People watch to see your reaction because they respect your opinion.

  • @MrRubyscube

Of course you are going to listen to more Tool, Jim.
We should all recognize that what is happening now is really special. This is a band that have not released anything in 12 years, and are having an enormous resurgence in interest.
I have been a fan since the 90's and it is amazing and heartwarming to experience this. They were completely unique back then and more people seem to really "get it" this time around.
This is as you say, spiritual healing music. Not in a cheesy way, but a real existentialist one that hits people in both the head and the heart.
All this interest will probably result in Tool going to #1 all over the world once again when the new album drops and open up progressive psychedelic rock to new generations. Maybe even "correcting" the musical landscape a bit, just to be a conplete music snob arse.
Love your reactions man, you really have your own corner of the reaction market and resonate with adult musicians like myself. :)

I think, probably, by the time you are a quarter of the way through Tool's discography, most other reactors will have exhausted their own interest in Tool's most well known tracks. Immediately after having seen your reaction to The Grudge, I suspected you would deeply appreciate the entire discography. Having watched a number of reactions by other UA-camrs, I can scantily say anything of the sort about them.

    Per Genius: About “Parabola”
A “parabola” is a U-shaped curve in a quadratic function. “Parabola” is a play on the title of the introduction section, titled “Parabol,” which is a play on the word “parable,” or a story with an intended moral lesson. Parables form the foundation for all modern major religions.
“Parabola” is a celebration of life, the “holy experience” of birth, and the unlikely opportunity that we all share to be temporarily conscious of each other and the world around us. This song focuses on the realization through our bodily experience that others share the same limitations and desires as we do, and we will all eventually fade back into nothingness, as we were before our births. This realization “of our own mortality” urges us to treasure the life we have, use it to the best of our ability, and ignore base, unnecessary, unfulfuillable desires that detract from the richness of our experience of life.

Don't stop! The reason I love when your reactions come up is because 1.) You're actually musically intelligent, you understand meters, rhythms, polyrhythms, crossrhythms, etc. and 2.) You pay attention to the lyrics and music, and you have the critical thinking ability to interpret them to a deeper level, something these "HipHop heads" completely fail. They are liking the music to join a trend, it is VERY apparent you are not jumping on a train, but appreciating the actual beauty that is there. The reason so many youtubers are jumping on the Tool react train is because the fan base wants other people to enjoy the real beauty in the songs, nobody wants people to like the band because it's a lot of views. You are an example of someone who we want to be reacting to, if you stopped it would be really really negative for those who are likeminded to me.

Also regarding your "Trick", they did something very similar. The guitar descends and ascends the same scale, and the ending of Parabola, the very last 5 seconds, are how the very first 5 seconds of Parabol start. The last minute of Parabola is the same guitar notes and riffs as the beginning of Parabol, except with a lot of distortion and more punch, signifying an elevated and more forceful ending to the parabola.

The reason Tool is so engaging and cerebral and thus popular is that they are able to blend emotion and spirituality with a touch of humor in a way that leaves the interpretation open-ended and requires the listener to form their own concepts of where the music takes them. It's a brilliant formula and these four guys have been one of the few groups to really master it.

Don't let other people influence your actions. If you want to live react to Tool, do it. Your fans will enjoy it regardless. If you don't want to, then don't. You know you'll absolutely enjoy it, so don't let other's mess with your own experience. /endrant

I am pretty sure the lyrics are written after the bulk of the music is figured out, so it might have been hard to go back and actually fit the parabola concept into the actual structure of the song. For songs like Lateralus it was just the lyrical phrasing that followed the pattern so easier to do post music. Dont stop making Tool videos. Spiral out, keep going.

You aren't just another Tool reactor. I generally only watch the ones that dissect the song, and it generally takes someone who at least has a passing knowledge of music theory.
I don't want to watch someone just listening to Tool. It almost makes me jealous that you get to experience this stuff for the first time, and are interested in what's going on.
Long story short: please keep doing Tool. Your input is genuine and not full of hyperbole with clickbait thumbnails. You're interested in the music theory. That's hard to find.

The amazement, the joy, the look on your face that you have just been blown away... again. You're so genuine. Please don't let other people dictate what to listen and react to. Just enjoy and be mesmorized by some of the greatest musicians ever!

Perhaps there is a glut of Tool reactors, or maybe it's simply UA-cam algorithms at work, but many are rather lack luster. Quality over quantity. Many reactors appear to go for the clicks and views rather than having the journey take them there; many also appear to be way out of their wheelhouse as well. Imagine predominately listening to one genre of music your entire life (say, Hip-Hop), barely being exposed to another, then listening to something constructed completely different (say, Heavy Metal)... how would you respond if thrown into the deep end of a genre before acclimating to the shallow end? Tool's complexity can be overwhelming to the point one may not even realize what they are hearing (I know from experiencing this myself). I hope you choose to continue reacting to Tool.

    • @andrewlockett4569
      @andrewlockett4569 5 років тому

Yeah, don't overdo it. Tool contain complexity, sure, but compared to a lot of metal bands they also employ a surprising amount of restraint, so it only takes a good listener one or two times to really get into the tracks. Anyone can appreciate them if they're reasonably patient with the lengthier songs. Tool really could throw the kitchen sink in with their recordings if they wanted to, but thankfully they don't!!

Please don't stop the Tool reactions! You're one of the fee that actually try to dissect the lyrics and understand the musical aspect of them too. But if you do stop I hope you take the time to listen to them on your own time. They're my favorite band and I just want as many people as possible to love them the way I do.

    Jim,
Sure, the internet is awash with people “reacting” to tool videos, but I would like to submit that your videos on Tool, and other bands fill a different part of the spectrum.
Your videos come from a place of command and knowledge of music and musicianship that other videos don’t capture. Every other “reaction” video is like watching a personality react, in character, to thing they don’t quite get, but know is cool and a hot topic and worth a ton of views.
Watching your videos is like introducing a fellow musician to something you love, knowing that they will appreciate the little things, and then getting them to show you why they love other music that you may not have heard.
Keep going, and keep doing videos about whatever music comes across your desk. It’s enjoyable, and unique, and while you may not be the most promoted UA-cam music reviewer, remember that your point of view is appreciated.

Definitely give it another listen by yourself, it's an uplifting message.
TOOL have always been perceptive. Their music and lyrics have a unique take.
Their first EP cover was a spanner in the shape of a dick and early songs like Bottom, Stinkfist, Prison Sex, Sober through to Ænema drew attention to very human emotions. 10,000 days had psychedelic artwork by Alex Grey with 3D glasses and songs like Reflection, Parabola, Lateralus and Wings for Marie made up later albums. That highlights their transformative shift in focus to the spiritual quite well! They produce a mix with Vicarious and the like now.
The instrumentals got longer to be more contemplative (I think?) but they've always nailed the overall character for each song. I don't know if it's because Mallard writes lyrics on top of completed instrumentals to get a feel but it works.
